Started watching Breaking Bad today.
I never thought i'd like it THIS much just from two episodes. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul make a good pair of characters. :)
Let me rework that a bit so it fits for me :hmmm:

TV shows have already been mentioned several times.
Besides the second question asks what you are watching not what movie you are watching.

You should also read the book. The movie follows it closely, but is forced to leave a lot out. But the movie itself? It was filmed on a real corvette. You can't get much better than that.

Dawn of the planet of the apes about 5.30$

No, someone who thinks that there's any redeeming qualities to Bayformers makes me sad :nope:

The new Apes movies, on the other hand, are surprisingly sensible and well-made. I'd take them any day!

Honestly?
For me the surprise of the year.
I expected not much from the movie and ended up being very well entertained and laughing a lot.
Tom Cruise fans as well as anti-fans will love this movie - I don't want to spoil things though.
When it was over I had this "What, already?!" feeling you get after being sucked in for 90+minutes,
not realizing how fast time goes by, which for me is a sign the movie did its job.
Of course, not everyone will agree with this and I can't judge your movie taste.
I'd suggest to spend a bit of your life time for this movie though :03:
Great movie, and it gets extra points for using a lot of traditional stunt work and "live" effects/pyrotechnics as opposed to over-relying computer graphics - which I think gives it a lot of that entertainment value and "oomph" that the more CG-heavy action movies often lack.

Daniel Brühl - surely not my favorite Actor - was so phenomenal in this one, it was proof that the Academy is biased and money-driven instead of objective.

Agree, it was so much better than expected.
I went into watching it knowing two things
1) It's about F1
2) It's supposed to be a true story
After I finished it, I researched the true story and the movie seems to stick very well with what actually happened. The crash on the 'Ring is recreated so well.
The actors/actresses even looked EXACTLY like the real life people. I felt like that movie should've won some awards...but I had never even heard of it until a couple weeks ago. :hmmm:

I'm only part way through owing to an interruption, but will resume later. These guys know the importance of a good narrative; it's not just a bunch of re-enactors running about in the woods in Kentucky... this is a good story with real hardware on display. Once again, to their great credit, they include a Brit as a sympathetic character.

Finally saw Fury last night and my expectations have been met 100%.
My thoughts:
As usual, the Germans (or whoever is fighting the mighty, unstoppable, glorious freedom train of the US of A this time, be it Germans, Japanese, Vietnamese, ...) where dumb as bricks and obviously never received any sort of combat training, resulting in ridiculous scenes where 2 AT guns ambush a group of Shermans at some hundred meters... but only one AT gun opens fire (and misses of course) initially because... why exactly?
Oh right, cause the movie would have been over right there probably. :shifty:
Then the hilarious Tiger battle scene.
They used smoke on him - good call. Then they just backup and wait. And wait. And wait... why the hell use smoke if you wont take advantage of it? They could have closed in from 2 sides - keeping up the smoke screen - and then take it out with minimal or even 0 casualties but hey, war is so damn gritty and brutal, we gotta lose 2 tanks again to that "beast" before we kill it in a knife-fight scene that made me laugh and cry at the same time. And why would they fire on the move all the time, even on shorter ranges? Accuracy is 0 in WW2 tanks, while moving.
What about the Tiger? Why would he care to cut the distance and get closer!? What the...?
With an 8,8cm gun under 1km, he could conveniently wait and one-shot every Sherman tank frontally, why close in and basically help the Shermans? Too boring otherwise? I don't get it.
The smoke cleared as well, there was no reason he would close in... at all.
The cherry on top?
The final battle scene.
One immobilized Sherman tank against "200-300" SS soldiers.
WHAT?
While I see how their initial "playing dead" ambush worked, I feel insulted that the creators of this movie wants anyone, me included, to believe that a few hundred SS soldiers (able men, motivated, well equipped with many AT weapons as we could see while they where approaching) are totally unable to kill one single, already immobilized Sherman in less then a minute without any casualties - after the ambush.
They, one after the other or at least in small bunched up groups(:shifty:), try to approach the tank EVEN FROM THE FRONT(:stare:) and get mowed down (oh surprise!).
Why didn't they just attack from 2-3 sides at once?
The turret can only cover one direction at a time and traverses slowly, they could even out-run it, Jesus!
Why did they not IMMEDIATELY drop smoke grenades and took it out with 0 further casualties? What the tank can't see, it can't shoot.
Instead they wait to receive extreme casualties and then go like
"Oh Fritz, uhm...maybe we use smoke now after losing the squads of Wilhelm, Peter, Frank und Paul?!?"
"Ah yes Hans, gute idea, ja. Make it so!"
Gnaaahhhhh...!! :/\\!!
Besides the initial ambush scene, they should not have lost a single soldier. Heck, probably even some HJ kids with some weeks of training could have cracked that tank without too many casualties, considering the tank was initially surrounded and immobilized.
It made me cringe, nearly scream out loud!
So Nippel, the movie was so bad you say?
Yes and no, a movie is more than that, although they went way, way over-board this time when it comes to that and it spoils the dish for me, it might be OK for others.
Besides the terribad depiction of the always unable and retarded enemy, the movie delivered great images and tried to be very accurate when it comes to costumes, weapons, equipment etc.
It was a joy for the eyes (and ears by the way) for sure and the acting, was convincing and solid - at least in my books, even though I have a hard time listening to the mumbling of Wardaddy/Pitt.
Oh... I skipped the "Wardaddy is forcing his new guy to execute a POW cuz war is so gritty" scene because I would probably be unable to use a clean language and just break down, crying myself to sleep over it. Again.
All in all, I can recommend the movie to everyone who is interested in military movies. You won't get another chance of seeing so many beautiful tanks in action and the pictures are worth it, really.
If you, like me, care about authenticity and are not ok with an unfair, one-sided and inaccurate depiction of the forces participating, just stuff popcorn in your face each time you wanna scream or cry or curse... and bring a lot of popcorn for that!
Enjoy Fury...

Pacific Rim (I give it 3 out of 5 subs. this extra sub is given due to the action and the original idea of creature a.s.o)
Dark Energy ( I give it 2 out of 5 subs, reason this movie is made for the tv-screen)

No: I really enjoyed this film and don't know why you should think it was sarcasm. I hadn't known about the movie before I saw it in the racks, bought it, and was astonished by the aerial sequences. The lead actor seemed familiar and was ideal for the role, looking so much like Richthofen.

Don't forget the forced love-story between Richthofen and his nurse, or the "fantasy jew" pilot they wrote in to make the movie a tad more political correct and remember the audience that Jews were still cool during WW1 :D
There is a lot wrong with this movie, unfortunately.
That doesn't mean you can't like it, Eichhörnchen, enjoy your "guilty pleasure" (as long as we have Red October, you don't need to worry anyways. :har:

Thanks for that. Not knowing much about the Baron I wasn't aware of the inaccuracies but not surprised, since most "historically" based films play fast and loose with the truth. I just recall how impressed I was by the special effects when all we used to get in WW1 movies were ropey models and tiger moths dressed up as fighters.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from I guess.
I'm quite sure the historical inaccuracy of these movies is what makes them so bad for people like Sailor Steve, me and God knows who else here.
As soon as you know things about a topic and then watch a movie and see all the errors, it gets harder to enjoy, at least for me.
I feel kinda..."cheated" when that happens cause it also gives the impression that the creators didn't even try and care about history (something that one should treat with respect I think) but just the quick buck.
Was the Red Baron entertaining? Yeah it was, kinda.
It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen - but then again that is a record difficult to break after watching movies like Pearl Harbor and Bayformers...
The Red Baron is probably the U-571 of the fighter-pilot movies.
If you don't know jack about the topic, it sure can be entertaining.
If you do, you're gonna cringe. :haha:

Here's what happened with me. I thought the scenes with Manfred and his brother Lothar were well done, the acting was fine and I love Lena Headey, so I'm not regretting having seen it. The Albatros replicas were nice, but the only enemy they ever seem to fight are SE.5as, because that's all they had. The problem comes when they show the actual fight scenes. Lanoe Hawker died flying a DH2. Not only could they have used models, but there are replica DH2s available now. Their solution was to just not show the fight at all, just a crashed SE.5a, which didn't even exist yet, and Hawker's body. Also they made Hawker out to be this huge bugbear everybody was terrified of, and underdog Manfred managed to shoot him down. Since they didn't show the fight, we don't know how this miracle happened. The fact is that when their epic dogfight took place Hawker had 7 kills and von Richtofen 10, and there is no question the Albatros D.II was the superior aircraft. This is not to take away from the Baron's success - Hawker was a famous and respected pilot.
There there's the Baron's final fight. Wait, no there isn't. He says goodbye to his nurse and then we see his funeral.
Flyboys is the same - the Nieuports are fun to watch and the CGI bombers are cool, but the movie has about as much to do with reality as the airplane game I love so much. Maybe less, as the game's designer knew his aerodynamics.
If you want to see a truly great WW1 flying movie, check out Wings, which won the very first Best Picture Oscar back in 1927. In that movie they had an actual bomber drop actual bombs on a town they built just for that purpose, and the planes are actual WW1 leftovers plus some more contemporary biplanes, Curtiss P-1s to be specific, but still close enough to the war to look right. It's still the best of the genre, with Hell's Angels (1930) coming in a close second. After that has to be The Blue Max (1966). Though not as good as the book it is still one of the best flying movies ever.

You will like Aliens as well, most people even prefer it (though I think it is vastly inferior to the first part due to silly dialogs and acting in many situations, especially when the US Colonial Marines are involved... but you'll see).
After that, don't expect too much. Alien³ is weird. I would never say it is bad but I hesitate to say it is good. I like it, then I don't really...

I always put the first one in the category "Movies that need no sequels". Though it varied from the book quite a bit I thought that it, like The Terminator, was perfect the way it was. Trying to milk more money out of it just ruined the concept.

Watching the documentary on the series Steve, they said the apes were much more advance in the book but they did not have the budget for it and that's why they opted for a primitive look. And from that point on the budget was reduced for each film, even in the second one you could see the extra's had dodgy looking ape masks.
Behinds the scenes was funny while they were not filming, lots of apes smoking! :haha:
I agree Hollywood likes milking a good successful film with a follow up or ups.

Plot Summary
Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose long awaited reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his "particular set of skills," to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now - his daughter.

I just watched The Amazing Spider-Man. I was one of those who avoided it because the reboot came just a couple of years after the third in the original series, and because I thought the original was excellent.
I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only is the new version fantastic, but in some ways I thought it was better than the original. The backstory is more in line with the comics, and the script, direction and acting were all great. I highly recommend it.
I agree with Steve, can also put Rocky in that same category.
First Rocky was good, watched 20 minutes of Two and no more.
Forgot that one. I went to the theater with my wife, so had to sit through the entire second one. It wasn't bad, but of course the point of the first was "going the distance", and it was cool that he didn't win. In the second he won and it was all downhill from there.
Watching the documentary on the series Steve, they said the apes were much more advance in the book but they did not have the budget for it and that's why they opted for a primitive look.
I've read the book. While I said the movie "varied from the book", in fact I thought the movie was better.
I also put Die Hard in that category. The main character in the book just happened to be the US Government's formost anti-terrorist specialist. Making him an ordinary cop and a "fish out of water" made the movie for me. In each succeeding film he gets a little more "super" and I stopped after the second.

Last night I watched X-Men: Days of Future Past. I liked it. They made it so X-Men 3 never happened. While that might make some angry, the "ret-con" (Retroactive Continuity) is a fairly common device in the comics, and I liked that Jean Grey and Scott Summers are alive and well. "Nobody Stays Dead" is something else common to the comics. I also liked that they got the original actors back for most of the parts.

I remember how offended fans of the original were by the remake, and I have to agree with you. One thing a lot of people don't know is that the real original was a 1938 novella written by John W. Campbell, Jr. called 'Who Goes There?' The remake was a lot closer to the story and a far better film.

Born Yesterday, one of my personal favorites.
The "dumb blonde" was played by Judy Holliday, who reportedly had a genius level IQ in real life. :D She first played the role in the long-running Broadway play (from which the film was adapted) to rave reviews but the studio bosses initially refused to cast her in the movie version. Some of the creative folks at the studio decided to give her a prominent role in the film Adam's Rib alongside Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn in order to help "prove" that she was worthy of the lead in Born Yesterday. It worked.
She ended up winning both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for her work in Born Yesterday in a year chock full of great leading actress performances. (For starters, she won the Oscar over Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard as well as Bette Davis and Anne Baxter in All About Eve, and if you haven't seen those two movies you need to take care of that ASAP. :O:)
William Holden played the reporter/tutor/love interest and Broderick Crawford played the gangster dude. Great performances by both of them as well.
This is one of those movies that it seems like the general public is barely aware of these days, despite it being a total treasure and real hoot to watch. If you like classic movies or just good movies, it's a must-see film IMO. :yep:

Holliday wasn't in All About Eve, but she was in a few other films from the period - Adam's Rib might be the most well known. She was also in a film with Jack Lemmon altho the title escapes me... It Could Happen To You maybe? I think she may have been in Bells Are Ringing as well, with Dean Martin. Neither seem to be too well known today. I haven't seen the latter film as far as I remember and I've only seen the one with Jack Lemmon once.

Excellent. The characters are a lot more real than in past Bond films - fallible and imperfect. It's still got the action and the gadgets, but it's also got some humanity, something lacking in the last decade or two. It also gives a tip of the hat to some early Bond outings. If you liked Casino Royale you'll like Skyfall.
One thing I found interesting is that whereas Casino showed Bond's beginnings this one seems to jump ahead quite a few years, with comments about Bond getting old and some references to his past. As I said, mention of one particular early movie seems to be far in this Bond's past as well. I can say no more.

As I said, mention of one particular early movie seems to be far in this Bond's past as well. I can say no more.
With the way Skyfall went it leaves me excited for the next one. I don't want to accidentally spoil anything...so I'll shut up...but yes. I agree with everything you've said about this movie.

I think I promised somewhere that I'd report on this when I'd seen it. Never heard of it before: comedy, typical 60s look and approach but that's OK: I grew up with 60s war films. Paul Newman's character was unexpectedly likeable.

Could have been worse like waking up on a Prague sidewalk with a hangover. Not that a gentleman such as myself would ever do such a thing. But let's just say that it was similar to the scene at the beginning of Das Boot only no Kreigsmarine submariners where present or I mean to say I was told of such schinigans being a gentleman I abscond from such behavior.

Do you mean the one with Patrick Stewart or the one starring George C. Scott? I can never decide which I prefer. The original one (Alastair Sim) was called simply "Scrooge". Looks like maybe we're all wrong: the silent "short" version above was made in 1910, another silent ("Scrooge", known as "Old Scrooge" in the US) was produced in 1913, then a short starring Russell Thorndike in 1923, then the first talkie in 1935 (called "Scrooge" again), after which the one mentioned by Steve in 1938. There were of course a number of subsequent versions including the Muppet one (actually pretty entertaining, my son has it).

I wasn't judging. I like the originals, and I'm not saying I think one is better than the other. I'm just saying I like one more. The new ones are just more in line with the story I followed in the comics so many years ago.
Steve, I was not saying that you were doing that. In my opinion, the Raimi ones, were more in line to the story. The 1st of the new ones almost didn't had that "with great power, comes great responsibility" and the parents side story was almost batmanian (and a lot 90's).

That's what my wife calls Miss Marple. When she comes to town you better run for your life because people will soon be dropping like flies. :)
Similarly here with a tv series called Midsomer Murders...based in a tiny village where the murder rate has reached mega proportions :)

Tonight's movie: "Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia"

Watched it now: fairly OK, bit like a TV movie. Doesn't compare to the original BHL with Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman. I stayed awake for this one...

After months of waiting, I got to watch Better Call Saul.
If you're a fan of Breaking Bad, watch it. If not, watch it and then watch Breaking Bad.
BCS has a lot of potential, the first two episodes are great. :yeah:

Set in a village called "Badgers Drift" as I recall: would you maybe like to see your wife go there for a short visit then, August?

LOL. Yeah if not that one then the Father Brown Mysteries or Inspector Morse (that one I really hate because he's such a drama queen) or Poriot or DCI Banks or indeed any British murder mystery. Failing that she'll go for the US versions like Law and Order or the CSI series.

I saw The Purge twice over the summer. Hated it.
People say that Anarchy is so much better, but honestly, don't waste time on the first one. :dead:
