Hello All.

Well I'm probably the grandfather of the team at 67 yrs. I am a retired Police Officer having spent 10 yrs in the AOS ( Armed Offenders Squad), most of my career however was in Sole charge stations, where I was the only policeman along with my family in the back blocks of the North Island. In a violent incident I was seriously injured and as a result I am now wheelchair bound, paralysed from the waist down, hence my introduction into Silent Service and of course SH3,4 and 5. I am also very active in Flight Simming. I 'love' sport and represented my country in Rugby (Junior All Black). My other interests are chess, which I play online and will always be keen on photography even though I cannot take part anymore. Last but not least I must pay my respects to Kylania who has helped me to upgrade to the new mods in SH5 as I am only at kindergarten level as far as computers are concerned and he has been enormous in keeping my computer up to date. It is a pleasure to be part of this great forum. And many thanks too, to the remarkable people who have saved this game, from an early grave, with their mods.
zl2bmh (Jim).

Welcome  ZL2BMH

Welcome to the forums red! There's a recent thread here in this forum called Essential Mods and there's quite a few threads in the SH5 ModWorkshop you should check out.

Hello everyone. Veteran SH3 here...

Last week i checked subsim sh5: no DRM
3,33 seconds later I checked my local store: Sh5: 4,90 euros (some 6,50 $)
Installed
Cryed
Dived subsim
Installed some 5 mods
Cryed
Installed some 10 mods
Cryed
Installed some 20 mods
.
.
.
2 days later I sunk my first tanker off the british coast, and loved it. I am still working to understand the mod install order, I continually mess up things, but I think SH5 is totally playable.

I still have SH3 installed, not playing it anymore (it will be difficult once i have stepped into SH5... still I check regularly for the latest innovagion regarding the .exe file).

Anyhow... I m just leaving the office to mess around with my SH5 mods (I have to reinstall now), can't wait!

Hi everyone, I have only recently got SH5 but I am a veteran of the series, still playing SH3 & 4. I love it! Subsims are the best. I have been using full difficulty now for a year or two having learned advanced targeting via these very forums and YouTube. Also got some great mods for all 3 SH sims, also from here. Modders rock!!

Hi. Having seen the post about DRM being disabled I've bought a copy of SH5 for £7 from my local supermarket. There's something to be said for waiting a bit for PC game prices to fall...

Well I guess I should say hello and introduce myself.

First off I'm 18 and haven't been playing sim games for too long my first serious foray into sim games started with ARMA 2, since then I've acquired the LOMAC series as well as several IL-2 games. I personally love a good challenge and have been loving the sim games more than anything.

I play all sorts of games but I feel that the PC gamers are a little more serious than console however even I enjoy messing around a little from time to time, to that end I look for mods that enhance realism but I also like finding the ones that just make the game easy and fun to play.

That's about it for me, after all stuff like this really isn't my thing I always find it difficult to sum yourself up in a few short sentences but then again I've never really tried all that hard. ;)

Just thought I'd stick my head in here, not new to these forums, I've been playing SHIII + GWX for a while now, but found this copy of SH5 in the local charity shop still sealed in it's cellophane, for the huge sum of £1 I couldn't really say no. :D

Have just installed it this morning, so off to have wander round the game before seeing what mods are now available. :salute:

Hi, after years of lurking around on the forum I decided to create a user :)
I'm a fan since the first Silent Hunter. I skipped SH2. SH3 is my favorite which I played a lot, including grey wolves mod. I bought SH4, but hardly played it, partly because I had a slow PC, partly because I was playing other games and had other projects.
Now I have a brand new PC and free time again, I'm going to buy SH5 on Steam (I like buying games there, even if a little more expensive). I hope there are no particular issues with the Steam version, especially mod related.
I'm a (hobby) game developer myself, so I might aid some modding here and there if I feel the urge to do so, if that's the case you might see me around, but let me first see what the game and current mods have to offer ;)

Loaded SH4 & found this community by surfing the net last year. I thought the MODs for SH4 were impressive & really added to the SIM, much more enjoyable than stock. Unfortunately, someone thought they needed my laptop more than I did.

Anyways, I've since replaced it & I am currently nursing a bad knee which has limited me to sitting on my behind for the most part. Loaded Sh5 (unfortunately from steam, from what i have read) and immediately started browsing the MODs. UNBELIEVABLE! :D My head is about to explode reviewing all of the MODs from the various contributors & deciding which to use. The thread on MODs and loadouts has been most valuable. Sad thing is, I have used up my download quota for today. Guess I'll just have to mull around in the SIM till I my soup is done.

Cudos to the MOD SQUAD, you guys rock! You make the SIM what it should have been, and more enjoyable to those of us that are lacking of your skills.

Hi. Ive been playing silent hunter 5 for a few weeks now. Only cost me 4.99 new from game. I found silent hunter 3 in a game shop for 49 pence unopened lol so i had to give it a go. I love it to bits. Loved it even more once i added the gwx mods. I keep going back to sh5 though due to its looks mostly come to think of it. Ui is so anoying. Wish you could mouse click to post on sub instead of the walking or in my case comming across a destroyer and trying to run down the ladder instead of sliding up and down the tower walls. lol

Got to give a big thankyou to all the guys here for putting the time and effort into making these games more realistic and enjoyable. :salute:

Ahoy, My name is DaveO. I've been playing Silent Hunter since I had my old IBM with a whopping 6Gig of disc memory (that includes system) and something like 75mb of ram and I got SH1 in a box of freebies from microsoft or something. I just remember that I lived the immersion but when I got my next computer it wouldn't play it...at all.
Jump to a couple years ago and I got SH4 in a bundle with SH3 AND 2. That's when Silent Hunter really became my favorite hobby. I play SH4 and 5 side by side and occasionally I'll pull up 3. With the Mods and the Pacific and Atlantic to play in, I think I'll be playing for some time to come. I've never gotten halfway through a Career yet on any of the games for any number of reasons.

I also play Gtr and record & Produce music here in CA where I've been an engineer for twenty odd years. I also do tech work and love building anything electro-mechanical.
I've always been glad I stumbled into the SubSim community here at Radio Room and hope to learn more about modding at some point as I've always got something I wish I could tweak.
Good Hunting Mates! :salute:

Hi guys, thought it was about time I stopped being a lurker and stepped up to the spotlight.

I'm Lewis, 24 years old from Manchester and I'm a geologist.
I'm an all-round Napoleonic and ww2 lover, in particular the naval sides and started on subs with SH3.
Also keep marine fish so I guess I'm just drawn to the sea!

Hello all, I'm from Tacoma Washington area. I am in my forties but play like im 20. I love all history, but ww2 has always stood out, I actualy lost my great grand parents from an allied bombing. I have only played the first silent hunter eons ago and loved it, not sure why I did not continue the series, probably those darn cod ww2 games took my attention away(I still play cod world at war 82nd server). I have 2 kids 11 and 3. I am just about to purchase sh5 and hope to learn how and what modswill enhance the game before i play it. The reviews were pretty tough on sh5, but after reading posts on here and watching some of your members youtube vids, i am convinced this game will be a diamond in the rough. I really hope some day that someone creates a decent ww2 atlantic theatre naval sim, I would love a chance to captain the Bismark or one those german juggernaughts. Tim

We have a thread in the GT forum where people introduce themselves, post a pic and a little bio. I'm starting one here, because nothing helps a community more than openess and friendship. So, come on into the room, take off your hat, and put your boots on the table.

Most of you know me by now, but in short, I'm a native Texan, 50, located in Houston, and I like long walks in the moonlight. Have to consider myself a fan of Theodore Dreiser, Bruce Springsteen, and Wolf Peterson. Motorcycle rider since forever! Been playing computer games off and on since 1979. Blue Max was my first simulation.

I have been visiting this sight for some time and really enjoy all the information that is available.Keep up the good work guys.:D:D:D

Been messing around with Silent Hunter for a little while, started with SHIII but jacked it in as it stopped loading correctly. Dived into SHV when Onlive allowed me to play it for a quid but Error 42 cheesed me off so much that I jacked that in too!
I bought SHV on a disc last week so I'm here now, some install/setup niggles but I'll get there, maybe I need a change to these:
Intel Celeron 2.40GHz
2Meg RAM
GeForce 6200
XP with svce pack 3

Yeah, not a strange face here for some of you (I certainly hope not!) but I only bought the game some days ago...first impressions aren't all that good I'm afraid, but I am perfectly willing to give the game a chance, since I loved III and IV :)

Hailing from County Durham in England, I've played a little on SH3 (GWX) but never really got into it . I got SH5 from my son for Christmas and have slowly but surely stated to master some things that I never did on SH3. Many more tutorials and videos out there for SH5 it seems so that is a big plus. For novices there is such a big learning curve but I have decided to take lots of little steps and not expct too much too soon. I am also staggered by the number of MODs available for SH5 and this was another reason to have another go at the Silent Hunter series. No doubt I will have a re-look at SH3 as well in due course. Good to see a thriving community

Hi, my name is Xavi and I am from Tarragona, Spain.

I've played SHIII a few years ago and loved the game. Unfortunately we changed our computers for macs and I was unable to play more.

A few days ago, my partner installed a windows 7 partition in one of the macs and I googled Silent Hunter and discovered SH5 and bought immediately.

Now I'm trying to learn to play again and to decide what the best mods are to be installed, so any advice would be highly appreciated, I'm a bit lost with all the information I've found here!

I love wargames and simulators.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I refused to buy SH5 when it came out because of the always-on DRM. Now that it's gone I bought the game and just started playing it.

At first I wasn't too sure about the interface. Not being able to jump between stations via hotkey seemed inefficient. Now I really like it. Having to move around within the u-boat adds a level of realism and claustrophobia to the game. You really get a sense of just how small your ship is and how vulnerable you really are.

The graphics are impressive despite some glitches. I had some trouble at first with mouse lag but found that a few tweaks solved that problem. My graphics card allows for specific settings per game so I set prerendered frames to zero and the mouse lag stopped. I would love to claim that my brilliant technical abilities saved the day but it was the SubSim forums. Others have had the same problem and posted their solution. Thanks!

Don't know if anybody even reads this thread anymore, but I just thought I'd throw in my two cents, mainly because I want to praise this forum that Uncle Neal made and to tell y'all how it changed me.

As you can tell from the box on the left, I joined in 2004, but what I really remember is what I found. It was back when SH3 was shoved out the door, unfinished and with the PC-killing StarForce "piracy protection" program on it.

It may sound familiar to those of you who joined when SH5 came out :)

The server database seems to have eaten all of my posts from back then and that might be a blessing, because I was not a nice guy. OK, let's cut the bull and admit it: I was a real pain in the you-know-what.

Venting, raging and raving, cursing Ubi and the dev team, yelling my head off. All of which I had a perfectly good reason for, we'd all been bent over the barrel on that release, but the problem was that that was all I seemed to be capable of: Ranting and raving against the dying of the light.

Now, a lot of forums would have finally either had enough of me and either banned me for not contributing anything or just ignored me, and they would have been perfectly justified in doing so. Who wants 200 threads about the same topic? But not this place. Yes, I got a rebuke, well-deserved, from time to time, but what really stood out for me was the determination with which the modders went to work to turn that shipwreck into what it ought to have been. With generous help from the dev team, by the way.

So it dawned on me: You're just whining your head off, justified though it may be, but those people are actually trying to do something about it. It took a while, but I finally got it and I joined the team. Only in minor ways, I'm not the best modder in the world, far from it, but I finally switched from being a screamer to being a contributor in whatever way I could.

And, in the end, SH3 became, no thanks to me but before my very eyes, not only what it should have been but so much better and it showed me what a strong community committed to fixing problems rather than just crying about them can do. And it gave me the best damn sub sim that I've ever played.

And NONE of this would have happened if it hadn't been for Uncle Neal and the outrageously talented modding community we have here.

And that is why I, when SH5, which I had been awaiting eagerly, turned out to be a disaster upon release, I didn't despair, because I knew that it would be fixed. And I also knew exactly where to go to find the fix.

My fellow sub simmers: I cannot emphasize enough how much the Subsim community has done for our favorite genre. None of this would have happened without the efforts of Uncle Neal and our modding community, not to mention the never-failing commitment to helping that every single member here shows every day.

Without Subsim.com, I am convinced that the Silent Hunter franchise would have died with SH3.

I love this place. It has done more than anybody to promote my favorite sim niche and it has made me a better person too.

Good evening (well, it is here).
I am not quite new to submarine simulators, but I still have much to learn about using torpedoes.
I have known about Subsim for a while. It is the best naval site that I know of, and a credit to all who contribute to it.
I am in England. Both my father and my grandfather were in the Royal Navy.
I have a friend who was an engineer on a modern conventional submarine in the Royal Navy.

I have only just acquired Silent Hunter 5. It was very cheap on Amazon. I do not understand how best to use it, just yet. So, in order to really understand it, I am using Silent Hunter 4, and am on patrol around the Solomon Islands.
I have started to follow instructions on how to set up a firing solution. At the moment I am doing my best to understand the A.O.B.
There is no shortage of help. The manual is actually useful, and there is plenty of help to be found on this website.
The graphics in version 5 are nice, but the simulation does not feel complete, compared to earlier versions. Perhaps I will find mods to help with this.

My health is poor, and so I find it a struggle.
The submarine simulation is interesting, but I am fully aware of the horror of warfare in WWII. I always have this in my mind. I feel sad for all who took part in the struggle. They all suffered. There is nothing nice about war. So I just try to learn something about it.

Thanks for all the wonderful mods.

Be peace, Cod (a noble fish) :salute:

Well this is a leap into the unknown...:DL
I've been playing computer games from Chucky Egg on the ZX Spectrum to Crysis 2 on the PC and all the consoles in between. Unfortunately, I'm now slowing down a tad, and have become bored with being whipped by 5 year olds online, so I thought I'd try something a little more taxing on the brain, but less reliant on mouse reactions...
I'm hoping that Silent Hunter will fill the void (I've just purchased 3 & 5) as I've always been drawn to the dark, menacing, yet graceful lethal weapon below the water line. There's something really sinister about submarines - a bit like swimming in shark infested waters; you know there's a threat somewhere, you just can't see it! The flip side is that being in the submarine itself must be just as terrifying as you know that if you're hit, you can pretty much guarantee an oxygen starved death :o
Any tips on getting the most of SH5 would be appreciated as it appears to get a universal pounding for being released without even basic testing.
Cheers - Villagegossip (from United States of Yorkshire)

Finding it nice but difficult to gey into SH4 it is not....but I suppose it will get better with experience.

I'll take this opportunity to thank all the modders out there (hope to join you someday), without you these games would be useless.

Hi,
I am new on this forum.
Thanks for all the help and the mods I will find here.

I play Silent Hunter from the first one (1996), and my favourite one is SH3.
I play SH5 now, but it's full of bugs (did someone see the gun crew shooting the gun from 20 meters deep in the water? I did! :har: I have some screenshots on my steam account :D)

I really love the SH series, but SH5 gave me a real disappointment, I bought it for 55€, and after a few times i played, I regret i spent such money.

A good hunt to everybody.

Try this link to the well done list of hints and MODs for new SH5 users. It should go a long way toward making the sim much more appealing and easy to use as well as greatly improving it's realism.

Welcome Aboard Tee Kay,

We've got a lot in common!

I, too, am a retired pilot. In my case, airline type. I was very involved in flight sim for several years, both online and off, until one day I stumbled across SH5 and from that day to the present I've never looked back. Since it's very different than Flight Sim in many respects the learning curve, at times, can sometimes be rather steep but fear not, the people here on this forum are some of the most helpful you could ask for.............and remember ther's no such thing as a stupid question!

Good luck and good hunting

Nice thread this one. Well I've been reading Subsim forum since the release of SH3. I used to be here nearly every day, reading, learning, searching for great mods to improve SH3. Then it was kind of simimilar with SH4, but then I got really busy at work so for me it wasn't the right time to play SH. Completed my career in SH4, have a savegame backup in SH3 and I hope I'll be able to make it till the end of the war one day. Now after some time and great mods released finally SH5 dragged me into it again.

Anyway my name is Jan, I'm from Czech Republic. I was born in 1979 and I live in the capital of Prague. I believe that even guys from overseas know where that is since you are looking at it on the navigation map since the days of SH3. I work as a local tourguide for english speaking tourists in coach industry. And that's the reason why most of my time spent with SH is during the winter time, because tourguiding is a typical season job so very busy in spring, summer and partly autumn and then deserved rest in winter. Well - I wouldn't call it a rest since I was depthcharged yesterday.

I think my profession changed me a lot, most of the tourguides I know are information hungry and that's why I'm interested in anything. History, architecture, events of current world, conflits, technology, inventions, personalities etc....I'm not that crazy about politics though.

I like reading, mainly factual and autobiographical books. I like films, autobiographical again, or some precise description of some historical event, war films of course, but recently even romantic ones. I think it comes with age and personal experiences, but for example 'The Bridges Of Madison County' is really something. Music - well it started with Queen and Pink Floyd, passed over to imstrumental music like Vangelis and Mike Oldfield and finally I ended up with classical music so now it's czech composer Antonin Dvorak, then Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. Love opera too - Verdi, Puccini, Bizet's Carmen is great. I like model assembling, my latest creation is U-997 VIIC/41, see here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=131182
I like any kind of models which are somehow interesting to me. So I built all the bombers like Avro Lancaster, B-24 Liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress etc. Assembling U-Boot was a must for me.

Regarding sport I was track and field guy untill my twenty two (javelin). Then I've dislocated my shoulder in a gym during weightlifting, quite a serious injury it was so I had to give up. Today I'm just a recreational sportsman, I like basketball, can play tennis, table tennis, badminton etc.

And that's about it, let me thank to all of you here setting up such a great and friendly community, I thank to all the modders - even those capable of creating minimods, which may feel as less important, but they can have a huge impact on the final atmosphere and immersion. Thank you for keeping SH series alive, making it even more educative and when it gets associated with the community such as Subsim one - than it is more than just a game.

Thank you and good hunting.

I like all kind of simulators (FSX, X-Plane, Rise of Flight, IL2, SH5...), my last adquisition is a great Trackir 5, than with Rise of Flight is the summun!!:yeah:

I have use a lot your web and is superb, its a pitty than Ubisoft do a very bad service with SH5, but the modders of subsim make the game can fly.

Congratulations to everybody in subsim.

I'm Iceden, US citizen living in DK. Have been gaming/siming since my buddy in Calif. got his PC Jr ( 1982? 83? ) ( 286x with addon graphic component..i think it was ). I think 'Gato' was what it was called, simple graphics, yet we spent countless hours living ourselves into this sub sim. From there the C64 with F-15 Strike Eagle, F-117 Stealth Fighter, Raid over Moscow and Red Storm Rising ( I so miss the Sea Lance missle/torpedo ).

Now, its PMDG 747-400 (FSX) , DCS A10/Ka50, World of Tanks and recently SH5. I think I did a little SH3 or 4, can't remember which, but lost interest...

Im an IT Admin / tech, love history, women and the fine danish beers.

Hats off to the knowledge sharer's, mod developers and website 'crews' for offering thier time and resources to make this sim playable and enjoyable.

Ive done some programming ( mostly LUA ), and after I get used to the workings of SH5, hopefully I will be able to contribute with some mods in the continous effort to fine polish this great sim...

I´m 45 years old and living in Denmark. I have always liked sims, but have never had the time to get really god at them. I mostly use sims for pleasure and relaxation.
I bought SH5 because I remember having some god times whit SH3. But I don´t think that SH5 is as complete as SH3 was, so I began searching for mods and ended up here.
I can see some fabulous mods here and just wont to thank those off you that have the skills and the generosity to share them whit people like me that don´t have the skill to do such things.

I love sub and flight sims, boating & R/C planes - all wonderful escapisms from real life (but I would be preaching to the converted)

As was done with SH3/4, SH5 is now becoming both very immersive and playable due in no small part to the incredible talents in this community, without whose efforts I would have totally given up on this franchise.

You can purchase Guns, You just need the licence for that class. Non-Restricted = Hunting Rifles, Shotguns, And Semi-Auto's. Restricted is Hand Guns, I find its a wacky law that Handguns need to be longer than 4.1 inches.. Means i cant own my dream pistol.. A 1911 Colt .45 Auto.:wah:
In short its more stricter and regulated than the U.S. Gun laws.

Sure can. The only real 'problems' are we (US citizens) can't legally own anything bigger than a .50 cal and you cannot own fully auto firearms without the proper license (Class III FFL IIRC). I have 4 handguns and 12 long guns (from .17 cal up to .50 cal including assault weapons). Laws differ from state to state as to what they 'ban'...but this is unconstitutional as their 'ban' infringes on your right to bear arms :shifty:

So even if it’s my first post here, be sure we will cross somewhere on posts, and I’m happy to feel a small part of this big family! :salute:

Thanks you all, and special thanks to the modders who make SH4 and now SH5 so complete and so enjoyable! :yep:Hi , have fun :yeah:
