We have a thread in the GT forum where people introduce themselves, post a pic and a little bio. I'm starting one here, because nothing helps a community more than openess and friendship. So, come on into the room, take off your hat, and put your boots on the table.

Most of you know me by now, but in short, I'm a native Texan, 50, located in Houston, and I like long walks in the moonlight. Have to consider myself a fan of Theodore Dreiser, Bruce Springsteen, and Wolf Peterson. Motorcycle rider since forever! Been playing computer games off and on since 1979. Blue Max was my first simulation.

I don't do pictures. ;) But my name is Pelle, I study linguistics at Masters level after having completed a Slavonic languages BA in Lund, Sweden. I'm not really a "gamer" or whatever, but there is something about the ocean and games related to it that gets to me. At least since Wolpack on DOS...

Music? The Smiths, Field Mice, lots of stuff. Current favourite is the adagio from Beethoven's 5th piano concerto in E flat.

I'm getting SH5 from Amazon sometime next week hopefully. Looking forward to it!

I'm 38, from Scotland in the UK. Used to hang around these forums a lot when I played SH3, but drifted away. Logged in yesterday to see an unread message from Neal asking to use one of my posts in the "2007 Subsim Almanac book". Oopsie. Sorry for not replying!

My music tastes veer all over the place, so are difficult to pin down. One constant is Tanya Donelly, I adore her voice.

Have SH5 on order, and I'm playing SH4 until it arrives. Looking forward to it. :)

Friends call me Bill; San Francisco Bay Area.
Recovering journalist, currently employed in the political arena.

Been on the Subsim forums for a while, at least since SHIII or was it SHII?

Big fan of naval simulations; started with North Atlantic '86 and I think U-Boat by Deadly Games was my first submarine simulation. Also, spent many, many dark nights and lost weekends with Fleet Command.

Music? Well since I'm Chinese-American, I listen to country, of course! :D

Well let's see. I'm a major Civil War, WWI, and WWII History buff. 25, live in New York (No not the city lol) Play the flight sim's primarily with the FPS thrown in, console on them not the PC.

Silent Hunter III was by far my favorite of the series but when I upgraded my PC I couldn't get it to work on the new PC (I tried all the suggestions and fixes lol) Bought Silent Hunter 4 when it first came out and just found out about the U-boat missions a few days ago and downloaded them.

Found this web page by accident when reading a review on SimHQ so figured I'd register and offer what little knowledge I could offer. Plan on picking SHV up after work today.

Sub Sim's have always held a special place in my computer cabinet, only games that they get pushed aside for are WWI flight sims... But that section of shelving hasn't really changed since I bought Red Baron 3d lol

I'm Martin, 27 years old, from Copenhagen, Denmark, and study at the University of Copenhagen. I'm very interested in history, philosophy, and mechanics. I used to work as an aircraft mechanic, but my need for massive machines and the occasional industrial accident is now fully reliant on the Silent Hunter games. Heh. :smug:

I've been hooked on the Silent Hunter series since the first game, but SH3 is the all time favorite (come on SH5, you can beat it!).

Music wise I play the guitar, and like a lot of different music...from Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Nirvana, Silver Chair, Björk etc. (and some Danish bands of course)

I've recently started getting into modding various games, so hopefully there will be something to try improving in SH5 (I'm quite sure there is). :D

Guten tag!
My name is Christopher, 34, from suburban Philadelphia, USA. Out of work (damm recession!) accountant doing my best to stay "employable".

Although I'm a fairly new poster, I've been a longtime lurker. Love computer gaming and especially sims. Like most of you I'm sure, SHIII ranks up there as one of my most enjoyable gaming experiences. First sim I played was Chuck Yeager's Test Pilot (1988). Other all-time fave sims: Gunship!, Red Baron, Red Baron 3D, IL-2 and DCS: Black Shark.

On the fence about SHV but I enjoy reading everyone's opinions.

(sorry, no picture).
Cheers. :salute:

I'm Dean from Cornwall UK. 31 Years old and love almost all types of sim. Flight sim and Uboat are my two main favourites. Play a little guitar here and there too. Have been a member at Subsim for about 5 years but dont really post all that much, more of a lurker hehe. Might be time to surface the boat and start posting though :P

And last but not least one hell of a scary picture of me about a year ago lol

I guess most of you know me already, in good and in bad (mostly the latter, tho, I got reputation to keep. :smug:). The official unofficial official SubSim Twat and a keen vagitarian.

With pretty much skipping SH4, it's time to set out again in SH5 (when I said I wouldn't buy it, I was of course lying :O:). So, keep a close eye out for threads begging and screaming for Black Pearl to be included to SH5 (Since SH3 I've wanted it but noooo... community my ass :nope:).

And remember, the glass is half full, if in doubt, pour some more. :salute:

I like introductions. :woot:

Some of you already know me as well from the meet of from the 24th Flotilla, but for those who don't, I'm Miguel, 23, and live in Southern Spain as a Database and Business Applications Programmer, and as Webmaster and Game Programmer in my spare time.

Started as a flight simulation lover (though I tasted 688i from Jane's, and I loved the 3D view features), moved on to the RTS genre where I stayed for a long long time, and one time I saw a movie in our war collection: Das Boot. It was cool at the time, but it didn't sound too well in Spanish, so, after looking for original sound clips and all that (at the beggining just for the soundtrack, which I also liked), I found out about SH2, my dad had it in some shelf. Played it, got some subsim mods my dad had burned in a CD, and then I just wanted it to play like if I was watching Das Boot. And I loved it so much, that I even made subtitles for it. Looking for further info on the game, I found out about SH3 in December 2003. While eagerly waiting for it, I found an independent SH3 site in which I became a news poster/translator, the Ubi forums, SubSim, the WPL and the 24th Flotilla. After some more time, I became more objective on what Das Boot represented, but I still love the movie (please don't kill me :P). :D

Not getting sh5 yet, but I'm still going to hop in here, since I never did introduce myself, and I practically live on this site.

My name is Steve. I'm a (seasoned and nearly worn out) software engineer in Asheville, North Carolina. My first subsim was Silent Service on a commodore 64 (if my memory serves me) but I left the genre for 20+ years, until discovering the SH series in late December. Now I've become obsessed.

My first real computer was an IBM 8088. I purchased 4 mb of ram to upgrade my 486 circa 1994, for $212.00. I'm glad I did not purchase the 9 GB Micropolis hard drive for $4000.00. I suppose my point is I don't bother trying to keep up with the latest in hardware. Currently I'm on a 3 year old box that runs sh3 great, but my sh4 framerates are a little low (the main reason I'm not dashing out there to get sh5).

I'm a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tom Petty, Skynyrd, Bruce, and Alice in Chains. I'm waiting for the ice to give way to some nice weather so I can hop back on my 07 Road Glide and put on about another 15 K miles of back country roads again this summer. But in the mean time, subsim.com rules!

edit: I should mention too, I was an ASW sensor operator in the USN back in the 80's. P3C Orion flight crew. I play a 5 string Music Man Stingray bass and a Gretch Jet 6 string. Here's a shot of me with my sweetheart in the driveway:

Hello...

My name is Jeferson, Brazilian, living now in Canada, Toronto. I was a programer until my age of 24, now Im 26. I decided to leave my profession and hit the road backpacking, and writting books. I think life is too short to "work to pay bills and have children to perpetuate the specimen". I think life is way too precious to do just that, so I decided to walk all over the world and write my books until I find an answer to "what is life all about".

I started modding when I was 7, (yes, my dad told me a story about how I got a big truck for christmas gift, and instead of playing with it, I picked up a screwdriver, opened it up, and replaced the plastic-fake-useless springs with real stainless steel springs, so the suspension would actually work). I've been in love for games since pacman for windows 3.11, my first addiction was The Lost Vikings, back when I was 12.
http://www.armchairempire.com/images/Reviews/gameboy-advance-gba/lost-vikings/lost-vikings-1.jpg

My first simulator was Microprose's Grand Prix 2, and one of the games I played most till this day.
http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/ss/7135_1.jpg

In my youth, I really fell in love for flight simulators, and I've played them all exhaustively. Most of them, combat flight simulators, but the one single game I can say I played the most and the first one that really got me addicted to it, was TopGun. I was lucky, my dad has just bought me a joystick, the famous logitech wingman extreme, back in 1996.
http://web.tiscali.it/squake/screen/top_gun_faw.jpg

In 2003 I started playing Silent Hunter 2, and since then I didnt want any other game. When SH3 was released, I started playing from day 1, modded it as far as I could, and for many years I did nothing except play SH3, mod SH3 and stick around this forum. I didnt play SH4 at all (not even 15 minutes), and Im planning on jumping into SH5 as soon as the DRM problem is resolved.

I love some beer + b.b.q. + friends, like everybody, and I plan to attend to the next subsim meeting to finally meet in person these nice fellows I got to know here in the forum. Im sure is going to be a lot of fun!

I am Dane from Sweden, 37 years old male and I have been playing computer games since 1984 when me and my brother got our first computer, a Vic 20.

In 1986 we bought a C64 and played games like Gunship!, Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, Pirates!, Project Stealth Fighter and Airborne Ranger to name a few. Hmm see a pattern there? Microprose ;)

Also played some Squad Leader and pen & paper rpg, mostly the swedish ones like Mutant (2), Drakar och Demoner Expert, Chock (Chill) and some MERP. This probably was the first step to a later addiction of MMORPG's.

Been playing simulators since the good old C64 days and lately it's sadly to much Everquest 2 (Ratonga power *squeek*) and to little simulators.

In 1997 I heard of a game called Ultima Online and I played that from 1997 to 2003 (still got the account active though) and it's one of the best experiences I have had when it comes to gaming. The old days were best with its harsh world and unwritten laws. Still chasing that fix... :o

When I am not working or playing games I like to eh do I do anything else?? I need to get professional help... :D

Like music like The Sisters of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails, Fields of the Nephilim, Hocico, Feindflug, :wumpscut:, Tori Amos, Mötley Crüe and whatever else that sounds good imho.

Been a subsim member since 2005 and mostly been lurking here, didn't want to post because I didn't want to loose my Bilge Rat title. :O: Great community and lots of talent here, SH3 has been a better experience thanks to you all.

Looking forward to buy Silent Hunter 5 from Steam tomorrow.

Tim here, I'm 29, living in Manchester, UK, a physics postgrad. Kinda crazy that this is my first post here, really. I've been on the ubi forums for a long time too, long-time follower of the SH series as well as Il-2 and other flight sims. Don't have SH5 yet, but can't wait to get my hands on it. I like all kinds of games from simulations to shooters, my favourite ever game is probably Dwarf Fortress, however.

When I'm not gaming I like to play piano, walk up hills (and back down them), or listen to electro/industrial music and drinking copious amounts of tea and coffee.

Hi, I am from the middle of nowhere and I have been facinated by Submarines all my life, built models, read das boot, got the directors cut of Das Boot, and am always finding out interesting things about them. Playing SH from the get go, however I do bore myself with FPS and RTS games from time to time. I am looking froward to SH 5 with the same intensity as I did when I first played the series. Neve modded, always realism:salute:

Hey all! I'm Matt, I'm 47 and live in Ft Worth Tx.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y136/matzphotoz/Facebook1.jpg

I've learned tons over the last few years here on Subsim, just haven't posted much. I was a career Paramedic in a large metro area here in Texas for over 15 years. in 2007 I was diagnosed with MS, and turned my long time hobby of photography into a side line job. Being disabled, I have a lot of time to be active on the web and play my favorite video games. I'm into sims, flightsims, subsims etc. and I also like FPS and some war strategy games like COH.

I've played all of the Silent Hunter games, and just got SH5 about an hour ago. I've always been amazed at the talent of the modders here, and if I haven't said it before, Thank You Guys for all the excellent work you do!! I can't wait to see what happens when you modders get started with SHV, I'm sure it'll be awesome!

Well, for those who don't know me (I'd been away from subsim for a year) -
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/g24.jpg
Hey everyone, name's George, I'm 25 (going on 26) and live in Waterloo, Canada, though I'm originally from Russia. By occupation, I'm a PhD student in linguistics/communication design, part-time writing teacher and research consultant. My first simulation game was Silent Service 2 that I played on an old Atari PC with my dad back in the early 90s (he'd be the captain, I'd be the XO/navigator). My dad soon stopped playing games and I'd forgotten about subs for quite a while, but in the late 90s I got into simulation and strategy games with quite a passion - been a worshipper (ahem, hardcore player) of Falcon 4.0 for the past 11 years, as well as many other flight sim titles. But my childhood memories of SS2 persisted, and as soon as I saw preview shots of Silent Hunter III, I knew that was the game for me. I've been at Subsim since shortly after SHIIIs release, and got surprisingly wrapped up in the community. I was a minor (but hopefully useful) helper in creating many old mods for SHIII/IV, and some of my work can still be found in some of the current mods for both games (which I'm quite proud of).

I left subsim for about a year due to some rough times and a little too much stress in my life, but SH5 brought me back here. I need to be around.

Otherwise, I got a whole range of interests. I dabble in video editing, design and even music. On the latter, I'm an obsessive listener and am particularly bent on hoarding a collection of King Crimson and Robert Fripp soundscape records, which I listen to for a very large portion of my free time :88)

Happy to be back at subsim and hi to everyone that I haven't had a chance to talk to in the past year :DL

My dad got me into Silent Hunter back when Silent Hunter II came out, and ive been a fan ever since. I also played a little bit of Destroyer Command, and it was decent.. I'm a major hockey fan, (Go Calgary Flames! Yeah!) and im a pretty good goaltender. Seeing a tanker blow up clean in half always puts a smile on my face.. :D So I say lets get out there and sink! sink! sink!

My name's Brandt--born and raised in Indiana, but have lived in London, New York, and Miami. The first PC I bought was an "Aptiva" with a 2GB HDD. I bought one game, Mech Warrior 2, and have been hooked on pc games ever since. Mostly I'm interested in military simulations. Spend some time in the Jane's titles, my favorite being Longbow 2, then moved on to Falcon 4, and got in real deep. Actually flew a few hundred hours with a F16 pilot online, going through a rigorous training curriculum. Then to IL2, and the beginning of my now obssesive interest in World War II. After IL2 I went back to jets, with LOMAC--particularly Flaming Cliffs with its ground-breaking flight model for the Su-25. I wrote a few reviews and articles for the long gone (I think?) combatsim.com site.

Most recently I helped beta test, and proof-read the 500+ page manual for DCS: Blackshark--a KA-50 helo sim from Eagle Dynamics.

As far as the sub sims--I picked up SH3 and never looked back.

I'm Martijn, 33, single, and one son. I am a .NET developer (mostly, I do other languages too), and run two business, one which publishes it's own software to consumer and business market, and the other is which I do most of the work for as of late (bigger freelance webdevelopment projects). I also developed and host a CMS for websites, which is mostly used by freelance friends of mine (designers).

I got introduced to the SH-series at version 3, but I remember playing submarine sims for much longer (although I can't remember the titles). In the past I favored FPS games (played world leagues/tournaments), but the past 5-6 years I rather play RTS and sims because of the slower pace. When SH4 was released I started work on the freely available mod-tool S3D (signature), which has become very popular. It took almost 2 years to make, so I must admit I enjoy that SH5 comes with good modding tools, because I did not see me do it again for SH5 ;) I will not purchase SH5 for a while, because I have very little free time but I will at some point probably. In the little free time I have left I rather play in my 5-man band (I'm the guy on the right, chewing on the pick :O:):

Pleased to meet you All,

My name is Rob, 46, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic, Bachelor of Medical Science, nub rock drummer extraordinaire.

The book Run Silent Run Deep is to blame for all of this :yep:

I've been into video/PC games of all genres since the days of the first machines. Silent Service and SS2 got me into sub sims. First PC was a 386 and I played Red Baron and Wolfpack on that. 486 followed with Aces of the Pacific/ over Europe, and Aces of the Deep! Played that sucker for years

I've owned all of the Silent Hunter games, including as of today and despite my misgivings about the DRM, SH5. Have friends over every other Saturday for IL2 flight-night. Also do Falcon 4.

Girlfriend likes WoW so play that too.

Hehe, we compose dutch music though, so you won't understand the lyrics. I only have old recordings right now (over a year old) except for one song. Currently we are in the studio (since a few months) for higher quality and some rearrangements.

Here's some songs: http://www.vlucht13.nl/muziek/

In two weeks we play in a contest for the new 'National dutch song for Amsterdam harbor' (8 finalists from 200 applicants), it's the first song on that page. It's not really our style, but the free advertising is great...

Damn, now you can see other photo's too (and I was trying to hide) :D

Martyn, 28, living in middle England. Happily married, no kids (yet). Qualified aero engineer, but ended up working in IT. No, I don't understand either. :hmmm:

Long time gamer, starting out on a Spectrum then an Amiga. SH3 was my first proper subsim, and despite spending more hours on that game than possibly any other, I never managed to play a career beyond 1940. Consequently, I never received a real good depth charging, and also never died. Hurrah! I'm simply a victim of my own self-inflicted insistence to do things properly and avoid cutting corners, so it takes me forever to make one patrol. Then, with each incarnation of GWX I restarted my career, before 1941 ever came into view. I skipped SH4 completely - my old PC wouldn't have coped.

Primarily a flight simmer, I use FSX at the moment. Currently hauling freight around Australia with Air Hauler. Used to play IL-2 online in a squadron for many years before moving onto more relaxed flying duties, not involving gunfire (yes, I'm an old man now). Real planes have propellers, btw ;) Also play strategy games and action/adventure/RPG types. Recently got back into playing Oblivion and chanced across links to realism mods in another thread on this board yesterday - fancy that! :D Alas, soon it shall be abandoned once again when SH5 arrives...

I play guitar, although somewhat poorly (who can find time to practise with so many games to play???), so in an undignified effort to boost my ego I picked up a second-hand PS3 with Guitar Hero so now I can really rock  (or so I pretend!). Can't condone consoles otherwise - they're for girls:yeah: (just kidding). Like to listen to Dream Theater, Metallica, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, and loads more besides. Distorted guitar makes the world go round  That, and a good cup of tea, of course.

I tend to drift to and from communities such as this one. I get too involved in reading all the threads and end up spending no time playing the games I'm reading about. So I drift away and get playing ... but then the desire to learn about mods brings me back, and I end up modding & reading forums till the cows come home, and actually stop playing again. It's a difficult struggle we face in life, isn't it...? ;)

hey world, Im Brett 40, living in San Francisco area California. I studied film and history in college (university of Michigan, Ann Arbor), now im a 3d artist in the animation industry (occasionally, I work in games industry). I love playing simulators, (mostly Sh3 and Arma2 now). Hobbies include model making, hiking, playing bass, reading, traveling (backpacked around the world once) and Porsche's (only have one:wah:). Love ancient and medieval history and all things WW2- (My dad was in the Normandy invasion, Omaha beach, so I get it from him although he didn't love ww2:cool:) Love, Das Boot, and have a strange fixation for submarines (maybe after I watched Yellow Submarine as a kid?). Love subsim, find it to be the best online community so far, and think people into submarine sims are very interesting and pleasingly odd, like me.

Don't have Sh5 yet, but I will probably get it soon enough.

Im John, 32, living in Nottingham in the UK. Im originally from Sheffield, but moved down here for a job in IT Support and lived here ever since. Great City!. I have played all kinds of games since I got a VIC 20 from dad. I first got into simulator games when I started playing Birds of Prey on the Amiga. Still one of the best intros for a game!. My first Submarine game was Silent Service II for the PC. I had just EGA graphics and dreamed of having SVGA graphics that showed the Yamato on the front cover of the manual. Ever since then I have been a collector of all simulator games. I bought Command aces of the deep, then Silent hunter 1, 2, 3 and 4 when they first came out. 3 is definitely the best especially with the GWX upgrade. I might wait for abit to see what happens with Silent Hunter 5, but I am getting itchy fingers just to get it for my collection.

Aswell as playing games I am passionate about military history and have a large collection of books about this.

As you can see I joined subsim in 2003 when Silent hunter II came out and have been mostly a lurker but do post if I feel the need to. Its one of the main sites I go on just to read the posts and see if there are any new mods and information. Its a great community!. :DL

Hello everyone! :woot:
My name is Roger, 27, a swede who studies medicin in Denmark right now. Have always been into simulators and have a huge interest in history, especially military history. Did my military service as a mechanic in the Swedish Airforce, serving the new JAS 39 Multi-role jetfighter.
Im deeply thrilled with ww2, as the conflict was not that long ago and I recon we should learn from history.

My first experience with simulations was actually one of my first memories of computers; playing 'Das Boot' on my Amiga 500 as a 7 year old. From then on I've played most sublike things, Im also into flightsims and strategy. I want to be a amateur pilot at a later date, life is long enough for all kinds of dreams right?
You can see me slamming everything that I find too arcadish, I'll by the game at a later state (when DRM is gone so I can use it one my laptop).

Hi all,

My name is Dan from Sweden. I´m 29 year old and currently studing to be a teacher. First PC game I ever bought and played was Aces of The Deep on my dads 486 with 8 mb ram! Those were the days. Been mostly a FPS gamer but when I heard that Silent Hunter V would go back to roots and reading about it here I did pre-order the game. I´m been lurking here for time to time since I bought Silent Hunter IV. But now I have a account too!

Hello there,

although I don't have SH5, I'll take this chance to introduce myself, because I've never done that since my first visit at subsim in 2008. Sorry for that.

My name is Henning, 44 years old, from germany. Working as research assistant at a university in germany.

Interests/hobbies: of course sub simulations. started with CAOTD, then SH1, then bought SH3 in 2008. Found GWX and NYGM here at subsim. Great mods. Until now I've never played a career, because always when I started to play, I found things which could be changed. So I tested hundreds of mods and made some mods by my own. That took so much of my free time, so that until now there was no time left for playing.

Other interests: Triathlon, chess, electronics.

I enjoy this forum very much, because the people here are friendly and very helpful.

Greetings,
Henning

when I am not working, doing chores for my wife, son, two dogs (my real masters) or playing sims, I indulge my other hobbies, reading military histories, snowboarding, scuba diving or my newest hobby...

I've got an MA in English, my BA was in German and at the moment I'm considering whether or not I can really afford to go ahead with a Doctorate.

Spare time (what little there is of that) is spent reading, writing, visiting subsim and moaning to all who'll listen about the ills of OSP and the lack of good, tome-like manuals. :arrgh!:

Got SH5 today via Amazon (they shipped it on Monday), have just installed it and watched as it downloaded the patch. Typing this up on my Mac, I'm traipsing back-n-forth between the two computers (and my dinner) to see what's what.

In real life I sit around writing screenplays. Sorry, no submarine flicks of late as Hollywood could care less :wah: .

My name is Chris and I am from Chicago, Illinois. I'm 33 years old. I got into the Silent Hunter series of simulations due in large part to wartime documentaries. I became fascinated with Naval warfare via submersible, it is interesting to me. I like flight simulators as well. I started with Silent Hunter 3 a few years back and then I shelved it for awhile. Fast forward and I've rediscovered it again and it is every bit as fun as I remembered. Sorry, I couldn't run Silent Hunter 4 because of pixel shader 2.0 and instead of upgrading my PC, I grabbed an X-Box 360 instead. However, this occurred when the game was first released back in 2007 I believe. I have since played the game but I still tend to like Silent Hunter 3 a bit better. My copy of Silent Hunter 5 is on its way and I'm sure it will provide more years of fun. I'm sure of that.

I'll start to say that my real name is Lars, I live in Odense, Denmark, but it's not my native city, so I hang around in other places too... http://www.silenthuntermods.com/forum/Smileys/extended/cowbcool.gif
I think to have a computer game as the only mayor interest is unhealthy, for body, mind and life in general. That's why, I'm not totally focused on this subject alone. And it's a nerd thing, so... besides SH, my great interest is photography, where I have no real favorite subject to shoot photos of. However, I never say never to shoot some photos of pretty girls... http://www.silenthuntermods.com/forum/Smileys/extended/winky1.gif

However, I have been following the SH series since the beginning thus having played SH1 and owning SH2, SH3 (2 times), SH4 and SH4 Uboat add on. My purchase of SH5 is in waiting mode. I was looking forward to the game, I really was, but some rather unpleasant facts have made me able to wait for further development, whatever that may be... :-?

Hallo, I´m Adrian, 34 years old from Duderstadt, Germany.
I started playing submarine simultions with "Silent Service 1" on an Amstrad CPC 464, later "Silent Service 2" and "Das Boot (by threesixty) on Amiga and Aces of the deep on PC. Played all SH parts except SH IV, as I was not interested in the pacific theatre any more. By the way, I didn´t like these scripted campaigns in SH II, where I lost interest in this game in the very first mission... but didn´t care as it was a low budget edition...

One of my hobbies besides gaming is scale model building. I used to build plastic models like this (Tirpitz 1/400, Heller):

http://i89.servimg.com/u/f89/13/89/56/79/tp110.jpg

or my Type VII C/41 in 1/72:
http://i89.servimg.com/u/f89/13/89/56/79/ubo210.jpg

but now turned to papercard models like this (to a huge part self built) Minehunter Type 40 (1/250):

My name is Mike. I'm a Wyoming native marooned in Nebraska. 44 years old. I did the Marine Corps 84-88 then did odd jobs til I finally wised up and realized I could get paid for programming. Been doing that for 16 years or so, in credit card processing. Ubi's bugs are nothing compared to what I can do to you! ;) I've been computer gaming since Gary Grigsby's Carrier Force on the Atari 800. Old school hex and counters wargaming before that. My gaming claim to fame is some of the first interface mods for Take Command: Bull Run which led to my doing the Battle of Chantilly map for TC2: 2nd Manasas.
I live with my wife and daughter, their 10 rats, two dogs, two birds, and various strays. So I mainly hide out in my Dork Boy room.

Well it's been a while since I posted up anything about myself, so I figured that now is as good a time as any to introduce myself further.

My name is Andrew, I'm 18, and from a suburb of Chicago. I've been computer gaming since I can remember. I would give myself a start in the late 90s with early subsims like Fast Attack moving on to things like 688i and eventually SHII when it was released. I've been around here since 2001, so I was a major lurker for about 4 years. I kind of lost touch with subsimming after SHIV had been out for a while, moving into RTS's like M2TW and ETW and FPS's like TF2 and the like. I just bought SHV and am doing my best to enjoy the parts of it that are great while banking on the modders fixing up the parts that just aren't there yet.

When I'm away from computers I am a soccer fanatic and have played for as long as I've been computer gaming (if not longer) and I play the oboe for my high school and for local gigs. When I've got free time (which is hardly ever nowadays), I love building scale models, mostly 1/72 scale airplanes but I'll construct the occasional tank or submarine. I consider myself a massive math/science nerd and love music as well as anything that has to do with physics, aviation, space, or the history of mathematicians/physicists. I'm about to embark on my bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech (or MIT if I get lucky in about two weeks) to hopefully get myself closer to a dream job at NASA.

Some favorites of mine:
Movie: Hot Fuzz
TV Show: Top Gear
Music: Coldplay, The Temper Trap, Ratatat, Passion Pit, Fischerspooner
Games: Team Fortress 2, Empire: Total War, Silent Hunter IV
Teams: Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Liverpool

And a picture of me at a gig for good measure:

Dan, 42, Romanian living in Bucharest, journalist since 1994, and an IT journalist between 2005 and 2009. Married, kid (who isn't into subsimming, BTW).

I've been playing games since I got my first computer (an Atari) in 1988 and been lurking on Subsim since it was a BBS (back in the '90s), but only registered in 2005, when the SH3 modding forum got limited to registered members. BTW, thanks Neal for this move, otherwise I would have been too lazy to register ever, and would have missed all the fun.

(No picture for now, as I wouldn't know how to post it here).

Hi all, guess it's time to properly introduce myself..
My name is Paul, 42 years of age and still single after all these years. I work in the horseracing world as a stable lad, wouldn't change it for anything. There's nothing better than galloping at 30mph or so in the early morning light.

My passions are classic American cars (have owned about 10 over the years including 2 Corvettes and 2 Plymouth Roadrunners) and music of the Heavy Metal variety.
Picked up an electric guitar to learn about 24 years ago and still can't play it.

Played all the SH series so far and originally joined these forums when SH3 came out, didn't post much, so little in fact that I had to rejoin with a new ID because I couldn't remember my old one when SH5 caught my interest.
I have bitten the bullet and out of curiosity bought a copy now even though when I move to my new place there is little to no signal for my mobile broadband and maybe no chance to play.

First impressions I had were not so favourable but I have to say due to the hard work of the modders of this community in changing the dreadful UI, I pay much respect.

Well, ahoy mates. Chuck here, and hailing from Seattle Wa. USA.
Gosh it's been like 3yrs since I logged onto the forum, but actually have read a great deal still but no posting as I usually can find what I need without saying a word.

I have been a fan of the silent hunter series since SH2, I also have SH3 but passed up SH4 for some reason. But SH5 brought me back big time and am really enjoying it so far.
Im an Apartment maint. Supervisor on a small 82 unit property in Shoreline Wa. which is manged by a rather BIG mgmt company. I enjoy Kayaking, flightsimming, and am big into RC flying. These days I've gone all electric with RC planes and really am not missing the old days of "wet power". Too noisy, slimey and oily.:nope: The technology has come so far now with micro electronics and lithium batteries that electric flight has finally come into it's own.
So this is me, proudly standing behind my trophy winning PT-19 at the Boeing Museum of Flight's RC expo last november. :salute:

Cheers all,

Mariusz here, a Polish-Australian living now for 3 years in Romania! I'm 35 with a wife and 3 year old boy. Used to think I was some old 'freak' for still playing games(at least that's what my wife thinks), but seeing all the old timers(no disrespect as I'll be there eventually too:)) here has made feel a lot more comfortable and optimistic that I can get old 'disgracefully' and still enjoy myself:)

I've been a member of these forums in ancient times (2005) under some nick that I've forgotten as I didn't post that much. Been lurking since then to get news and mods on the SH series. Have been a PC subsimmer (and simmer in general) since the beginning of the 90's with Silent Service. Have all the SH's apart from 5 which seems to have quite the number of problems at the moment. Don't have all that much time to play these days so haven't yet experience all that even SH3 with GWX has to offer so I can wait for it to be in the bargain bin before trying it.

Hi. My name is Steve, I'm a Security Supervisor in Sydney Australia, and I just turned 53 today. I spent most of my life working as a Technical Officer for the Royal Australian Navy, and the last few of my postings were sub-related. I was an Inspector of Naval Ordnance working at the RAN Torpedo Maintenance Establishment at the submarine base HMAS Platypus. I was supervising the assembly, disassembly, and testing of lightweight torpedos (Mk 44 and Mk 46). Lightweight torpedos are ship-launched, helo-launched, or Fixed-wing aircraft-launched anti-submarine weapons. I was also supervising the same processes on heavyweight torpedos (Mk48), which are submarine-launched anti-shipping and anti-submarine weapons.

My next posting was a weapons assessor, assessing Anti-Submarine Warfare exercises for the RAN Trials and Assessing Unit. In this posting, I learned the intricacies of prosecuting targets with modern torpedos (using sonar and search patterns to seek their targets). Very interesting job indeed.

I've played a few sub simulators, but have only just got SH5 so I've yet to form a firm opinion, except to say I don't like the DRM requirement to be connected to the internet to play. I also am addicted to a WW1 flight simulator "Over Flanders Fields: Between Heaven and Hell". Completely immersive sim.

I'm Vice-President of the Australian Society of World War 1 Aero Historians, the longest running Society of its type in the world. You can see what we are all about if you visit our website at www.ww1aero.org.au (http://www.ww1aero.org.au)

Well, guess I will have to introduce myself here. Name's Phil, 32, located in Frankfurt, Germany. I've been interested in Sims for the nearly all my life, starting submarine and flight sims as soon they became available like "GATO" or "The battle of Britian, Their finest hour".

I am with the SH series since SH3, which impressed me so much I got hooked, with the GWX team having a special part in this fascination. Thanks again for that, guys!

Currently I am working at a motion capture studio in Frankfurt, which gives quite a bit of insight into the gaming industry. Done work for Crytek, Epic Games, Piranha Bytes and yes, even UBI.

SH5 brought me here after already lurking for a long time. And I sincerely hope this game has a futute, as bleak as it looks now.

My name is Esa, I'm 36 years of age and I'm located in Finland. I have been playing all the SH series since the very first one and have liked them a lot. Although I was initially disappointed with the SHV's quality and with DRM I find myself starting to like the game more and more every day.

Especially after applying some of the great mods already available on this site. Big thanks to all the modders and other people who have been posting a lot of useful info about the game:yeah:.

I think I will even give the SHV morale system another go tonight (...if I can pass the DRM check).

That's true. Do you remember old barracuda? I'm Still around and with a new user name. Reason for a change in user name - well the portuguese sub barracuda was decomissioned and we are waiting for the new flotilla, and the first is the Tridente.
Only yesterday i've received my copy (limited edition from UK) and i like the game. One thing that is annoying - where i can get a pdf from the keyboard layout? Now in the begining i need a print of that.

hi folks :)
my name is peter stuart.
i'm a full time journalist/cameraman/video editor for a local tv station in belgium.
i started playing sh3 about 4 years ago, and the game was appealing from the start. a steep learning curve, which you could compensate by gradually increasing the level of realism. the high level of moddability (ubisoft should hire the people at gwx for their fine work :) , and the strong community support, make this one of the best games ever in my book.
i've known subsim also for about 4 years, visiting as a guest.
i'm a sucker for the atlantic campaigns, so sh4 is not that high on my game shelf. of course last week i got me sh5.
clearly this game should, can and will improve in the hands of modders. and i hope to be able to help by joining on these here boards :)

my sub is Seeklar, ready for sea. just don't forget to bring along torpedoes.

Hi. I'm Jose Batista and 'm here since 1995.

Tridente.

had the same problem, keyboard layout in the booklet is unreadable, and the one in the pdf that came with the disk is just as bad. you'll find a decent layout at the ubisoft-site though. you could try to save that one on your hd and print it out.

Time to get on board again, and as Man of Iron so rightly says the Modders make it, with out them we would be scuppered.

Really enjoying the sim, trying the new mods and improvemnts out, was one of the ones stuck on the fence over DRM, but re-ordered and havent regreted a penny of it.

Top work Neal you legend.:yeah:

I am also a part-time rocker, singer in a locally acclaimed Heavy Metal band, a full time father and I am married to the girl of my dreams (shh don't tell her that I said that...)

I've been hanging around these forums for a while, but not so much when I'm not currently playing a Silent Hunter game. SHIII + GWX + SH3 commander and a few more mods is my all time sub-favorite game, but I currently feel that Silent Hunter V can become huge with a few official fixes and a few fan made mods. A diamond in the rough for me, something I felt completely absent in Silent Hunter IV apart from the great graphics.

A pic of me, small but big enough...

Ahoy,
my name is Steve, my physical age is 37, my mental depends - don't ask my girl! :O:
I live in Düsseldorf, Germany - within torpedo range of Ubisoft Germany. No assault request, please! :arrgh!:
I've been playing computer games since the age of the VIC 20, my first subsim was Silent Service on the C64 - the first sim which really got me.
I came back to subsimming (is this a word? - I guess here it is) through SH3 which was quite a difference to SilSer and it woke a deep interest for u-boats in me.
I've always been interested in history, especially WW2, however not particulary in U-boats. SH3 changed that, so in addition to the price of the game came a s-load of time and money on books and of course an immense amount of time playing it.
I work as a broadcast technician for TV. Besides I read anything I get my hands on, love loud music and "I don't like govenments very much" - thanks for the qoute, EgoApocalypse.
Oh, and I am eagerly aticipating SH5 -the second Ubi removes their ridicolous DRM -> bought!

Went on to Picific fighters, then To Il2. I also like strategy games, mainly play Hearts of Iron 2, and the Total war series Err... not much else I guess the ocationaly the FPS...

well, Since I got the game, I guess I'll chip in :D

I'm Owen, 19 years old and I come from a mill town in north-western Illinois, actually, the only reason we are anything bigger than a village, is because of the mill (Northwestern Steel and Wire) But since that closed down...everyone's just kinda living here now. I'm kind of the leader of the "sub club" around here, being the most knowledgeable in submarines among my friends, and somehow, I have owned every Silent Hunter ever made....I know. I play the occasional tanksim, but my tactical expertise barely goes past convoy attacks so in tank games it gets a little awkward. I am still an avid flightsimmer, and I wanna get my license, so I can buy a plane and start earning money flying people everywhere.
Of course, I have nothing better to do since my girlfriend is in Finland on foreign exchange, there's a long story there. (So, Dowly, if you ever come across a crazy american girl, run for your life, she might just be mine:D)

I stumbled across SUBSIM trying to find a fix to my complaints about something in stock SHIII, and I've been kinda stuck here ever since. I am honored to be a moderator here, and now, a relatively long-time member. :|\\

Hello all simmers , Iam art .. I am a insurance agent and a motorcycle rider , I have been around the world a few times .. I started playing sh3 and than moved into sh4 .. I have always been facinated with WW2 history , Also I have been in the fourm paying close attention to keltos modding of sh4 ,, Recently a travisty occured in my life I have lost my computer and home amoungest other things ,, however life has taken a turnaround and I am getting a few things back again , the very first thing I did before ordering a new computer. I ordered sh4 and sh5 and also il2 1946.I ordered those threw here on subsim,, subsim has been the most imformative data base for me on all the subjects of subsimming . I have been using the handle of kimura ijn ,, Kimura was also used in relation to cfs2 , sisnce I was a virtual pilot for the 68 sentai ....http://68sentai.tripod.com/.. we were a group of pilots that fought against virtual enemeies . we had a group of crazy guys from japan that were also apart of this group . I have also flew in il2 as the 244 sentai ..however many hours of virtual flying and my age makes the little dots in the distance seem way to small .. and thats when I started sailing in the u-boat of sh3 .. I seem to have alot of times drinking vodka and getting smashed while sitting at my computer desk while the ship was still sailing the next day . I used real time and sometimes slept at my computer .. while the morning was wnning and my head was still spinning from the last nites drink . I learned to speak japanese while flying .. this was a total imersion factor ,, so I am still wishing to fly once in awile and once a while sail in a long drawn out campaign in sh5 ,, I went down alot in sh3 and sh4 in the higher settings .. one campaign that I will never forget is I was tracking a convoy the weather was foggy I than surfaced and behold a frieghter was just left of my bow bearing down on me fast I crashed dived only to get hit . than a corvette kept slammimg me I sank

I am now 48 old I live in NC and but always have had fun playing sims I notice alot of simmers listen to metal .. well I do as well dimu borgir is one my favorites

Hi All,
My name is Paul, 45 y/o and I live in Adelaide South Australia ... and a one-eyed Adelaide Crows fan (the other Aussies will know what I’m talking about there).
I also enjoy downhill skiing, jet skiing, volleyball and a bit of military history on the side with a focus on armoured warfare (mostly WWII) and submarine warfare (of course). On the computing side I’ve being playing since I bought a C64 – mostly flight, sub and armoured sims – the more detailed the better (love Black Shark at the moment). I also like the more detailed war games – panzer/ modern campaigns, Hearts of Iron etc. The very occasional shooter too.
As this is my first post, I’d just like to acknowledge all the really helpful people in this community who give of their time, knowledge and experience to help others. In particular, those who sort out the technical problems and, of course, the modders – well done and thanks to you all.

Hi all,

I've been looking forward to getting SH5, even though I've heard alot of negative things. Been playing SH5 all day today and can say that its better than I was led to beleive. Still needs alot of work tho. Hopefully the Devs release some good patches that fix most of the bugs and missing content. :yep:
Hopefully SH5 can be turned into SH3 GWX, with that bautiful graphics engine. thats what im hoping for anyhow.

I've always been into simultion games. mostly Formula one and flight sims. Then in 1990 i discovered Silent Service II and was instantly hook on subsims.
I have been playing Silent Hunter 3 for the last 5 or so years. I've never managed to complete it. Usualy end up getting killed. Damn that GWX team. :O:

Good Hunting.

Hi, everybody.

Well, I'm Silent Hunter fan for a couple years now. I got SHIII by an accident, just stepped into it while searching for another game. I remembered that my grandfather used to play SHI or SHII when I was young, so I had to give it a try :)

As for now, of course bought SHV as soon as it was available in Poland. A little bit dissapointed I am, but still I am sure Ubisoft won't leave us crying, and modders will do the glorious job of making it a simulator again (I want to start modding it myself). And that would be it. :)

Cheers and good hunting!

I would also like to send a big Thank you to all the sharp brains out there, that dig deep and modify the gamefiles to improve our journey on and under the sea.

Yar.

Long time lurker, silent appreciator of the game-saving magicians that make my entertainment worth the money I spent on it. Without you guys, I would never have stood in my living room in front of my big screen TV (I play on an Alienware laptop with HDMI), in my boxers and a white captain's hat, a bottle of Jager in one hand, and binoculars in the other, humming Westerwald and yelling at Bernard, with the sounds of sea spray and diesel engines shaking the pictures off my wall through a 1000W surround sound home theater system.

I am also a technical/deep wreck diver who has a special place in his heart for shipwreck archeology. Not only have I stood watch on the bridge, walked between the diesels, manned the deck gun, and crammed myself into the torpedo tubes of a half a dozen U-boats, I've also seen "ship caustic effects" on a T3 tanker - up close and personal.

Think that Ubisoft should hire these guys and pay them for all their hard work

Gosh, will anyone bother to read this far? Hello y'all. You will guess ( I hope) from my screen name that I am a lady - not many of us on here, but don't get too interested young fellas - I am no calendar girl, and probably old enough to be a grannie for a good few of you. I live in a beautiful part of Hampshire England, looking over the Downs; very blessed in that respect. I have SH2,3, 4 and now 5. The two games I most played on Amigas were a sub-sim whose name I have forgotten, and the space game Elite (I still play Egosoft's X-series space games ) and that subsim got me hooked, because, although the graphics were basic, you still got that tension as you heard the ship passing overhead..

I am a computer geek. Been interested in them since Speccy days and have for many years built and fixed PC's first as a business, then as a hobby. There was great satisfaction in reclaiming a machine from the local tip, getting it up and working and giving it to a needy person who could not afford to buy. Nowadays folks mostly want laptops, so though I still fix 'em when folks have a problem, I no longer keep a stock of monitors, parts and computers in the bedroom. At one time we had so many it was like Houston Space Control Centre up there.

My Avatar is Maisie, our dog, sadly lost to cancer 18 months ago.

Although I have been on here for some time now, and have all these games, I think I will always be a beginner, a cabin boy - but I have fun, and that is what it is all about :):rotfl2:

Don't judge a book by its cover. Like my name my look here is only for show.

I am quite Boring actually. But I love Submarines, and Aircraft. I am a commercial pilot, instrument rated, working on the CFI. I am also an A&P.

Airplanes are my life, but I also love music, and find beauty in those things most do not (accept for violent images for the most part, no beauty in that to me).

I have been playing subsims since Silent Service on my Tandy 1000EX. I dropped out for a bit until Silent Hunter 2

One of my top ten favorite films is DAs Boot, followed closely by 20,000 leagues under the sea. Hunt for Red October is also up there.

I am a heavy metal fan that also likes Japanese visual kei, and Symphonic Metal is my fave style of music.

I am also a beginning musician and learning guitar, with ambitions to form a symphonic metal band with Visual Kei style.

Before anyone asks, NO I DO NOT WORSHIP THE DEVIL. Forget all the media has said about Goths after Columbine. That was a load of crap.

LOL.

Since I mentioned my guitar playing, a friend thought it would be cool to post a pic she photoshoped of me with my axe. I rather like it.

Ahoy shipmates. I'm an old Silent Hunter player and modder making a return to the Subsim forums after a long absence. My last log-in on this forum was back in 2007, so here I am again, happy to be back and thankyou Neal for helping me recover my account.

I started off Subsimming way back in the day with Silent Hunter 2. I quickly moved on to Silent Hunter 3 when that was released, and ever since have been playing that with the excellent GWX expansion, which used some of the aircraft skins I created for SH3. I gave Silent Hunter 4 a complete miss since my PC at the time wouldn't have been able to run the game anyway.

So now I'm back with a bigger, beefier PC and a copy of Silent Hunter 5, which I'm hopeful can become a great game with a bit of tweaking and modding. I will admit I've have been having a few initial difficulties with SH5 (Only acquired it two days ago and haven't yet got out of the Kiel Canal) but those worries belong in a different thread.

I've always been a fan of the tactical/strategy war game, particularly those with a naval setting. I've been a dedicated Combat Flight Simmer in the past and for a long time also been addicted to the 'Total War' series of games, especially Empire and Napoleon which I've been playing rather a lot of lately.

Great to be back and I look forward to seeing what the community can turn SH5 into. If anything like the amount of work and expertise goes into modding SH5 that went into GWX, then it definitely has the potential to be amazing.

Hello all,

I am new to this community and hope to make some contributions along with the fabulous modders here on subsim.com. I'm 25 and a commercial pilot living in the Chicago area. On the side I am a dub and reggae musician and producer (Dub Dragoon dub system - thought SUBdragoon would be a good name for this place :03:). I'm an active member in the IL2-1946 communities over at AllAircraftArcade and SAS1946 and do simartwork (skins, screenshots, and videos). I also do sountracks and scores to be used with sim films. I'm a WW2-fanatic and find a good way to see it is through a good sim like IL2 or SH, especially with the great modders that contribute to these games. Flying is my main cup-of-tea and my life, but I've always thought if I wasn't a pilot, I'd be a submarine commander.

I've played SH3 for about 5 years, took some time off, and with a recent visit to see the U-505 in Chicago (only Type IXc existing in world), I've regained interest in the series. I recently got a copy of SH5, and like everyone else, I'm a little disappointed, but know that communities like these can do a lot to fix the screwups of a bad release. So far, the mods are doing wonders to improve this one.

I hope to contribute what I can and am happy to be here.

Cheers,

Jason, the sub dragoon :arrgh!:

I think you might have my old Spitfire. Sure looks like it. I'm originally from the SF. I got mine when I was 18. It was a 67 BRG. But I had the 69 bumper put on it. Wish I had never sold it. That and my 64 Alpa Veloce.

This is my current pet and unlike Spite Fire always runs but lacks the smell ad luster of a Brit Sports car. Those were the days. Watching re-runs of the Prisoner and driving fast my Spite. You lucky dog.

BT spent 90 % of my time in your town in those days. My dad lived over there when he worked at Mare Island. He was an engineer and worked on the subs.

Damn nice car. Makes me drool!

Dad worked for electronics shop 67 servicing the radar, sonar and scopes as well I think, mainly for the polaris subs. In any case, I have family roots that go back nearly to Admiral Farragut's time as base commander. I watched the SSBN Vallejo and SSBN Kamehameha launches. I also had a ships plaque for the SSN Scorpion for awhile. Gave it back after the accident for a family member of the lost crew.

Anyway the Spitfire is a '65 that used to be white when new, however it was imported to SF when new.

Then our Dads might have known each other. My dad worked there up to 64 but was killed in a car accident on the way to work. His name was Tom Neill. He was vice president of Hornbine Engineering. He use to take me out there and I can still see in my mind the line up of Fleet boats in moth balls.

Small world. His house was in Teralinda.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. That must have been on Hwy 37 well before the median wall was put up. I'll ask Dad if he remembers, but he's pretty old these days and his memory isn't to good. And yes! The great big pile of about forty fleet boats was cool. Wish it was still there now.

Age: 46
Location: Whangarei, New Zealand. Born in Canada moved to NZ in 2001
Occupation: Department of Corrections, Community Probation and Psychological Services.

Was in at the ground floor of SH3, skipped sh4 (was lost in the lands of an MMO) and now back for SH5. Played some SH2 or 1 (not sure) on a buddies PC way back when. Carpenter by trade but gave it up to get into my new career. Still love building but needed a change.
Main hobby would of been travelling, but that got knocked on the head a bit when I got married then a few years later a son. Happily working and living the good life in New Zealand with my wife and son :)

Photo of me my wife took. My reaction is in regards to her pointing the camera at me, she decided to make a Xmas greeting from it ...
Was the only one I had of me on photobucket.

Seeing all those old boats is a great memory. Even then I wanted a big model I could radio control. Now I have a bunch including a Gato.

Hello Hello, I've been gaming since as long as I can remember.

My first sub game was sub hunt, on the intellivision.

I play all kinds of games, but particularly enjoy sims. WWII Combat Flight sims (IL-2 and the like), WWII Sub sims (SH3,4,and now 5), and a few racing sims/games (more game than sim).

I have my own website devoted to gaming. You can check it out here:

http://www.theblackfedora.com (http://www.theblackfedora.com/)

I'm always looking for contributing authors so if you would like to write and get published on the web, shoot me an email at webmaster@theblackfedora.com

If your interested in IL-2 you can join me over at II/JG-53 squad here:

Now if only I could figure out how to change my login name here. . . .

Magnus from Denmark here. I study history at Copenhagen University.

I'm 26 years old and live with my girlfriend in Copenhagen. Currently looking for a job to supplement my grant.

Got introduced to subsimming by SH3. Been playing computer games for as long as I can remember. My earliest gaming memory is of my father showing me an edutainment game he got me from one of his business trips to Germany called "Kinderkomp" on 5.25" floppy disks. This was on his old 8086 with 16 colours :D

Have had a computer ever since. My favourite games series is the Total War series. Played them all except for Medieval: Total War. Also play FPS'es to get my adrenaline fix.

I love hard rock classics, Stones, Motorhead, AC/DC and new and old punk rock and hardcore punk music. Even played in an (admittedly pretty bad) punk band which toured Europe several times.

I'm pretty active at the Total War community TW Center too (under the same name) but I've never experienced a community such as Subsim. The percentage of really nice, helpful and mature people here is higher than I've seen on any other forum. :salute:

Not so young former frequent IL2 on-line player (now from time to time), i loved SH3 as well, but not so much SH4 (less fascinating), with SH5 the thrill is back! I really appreciated the approach of the game, the possibility to move a see what's going on inside the sub. I's all very immersive and drammatic. It surely deserves joining a community. A great community like this.

You bet, we bothered to read this far. :salute: Thanks for the intro.

Great to be back and I look forward to seeing what the community can turn SH5 into. If anything like the amount of work and expertise goes into modding SH5 that went into GWX, then it definitely has the potential to be amazing.

Welcome aboard!

Hi all.
Little fun I had in China a few years back performing for a euroamerican arts fest.

Just a pose for the camera. It was hard to get the guy to stop smiling. :D

I work as a Clinical Engineer for a health system and am also a semi-serious musician in my spare time playing drums for a celtic-rock band called Avalon Rising mainly. www.flowinglass.com (http://www.flowinglass.com)

Here's my pet car.

Other interests are balsa models and subsims of course. Oh, and I reside in San Rafael, CA and have had close association with Mare Island all my life, ergo the love of the boats.

Cheers

Nice wheels!! :yeah:

Not so young former frequent IL2 on-line player (now from time to time), i loved SH3 as well, but not so much SH4 (less fascinating), with SH5 the thrill is back! I really appreciated the approach of the game, the possibility to move a see what's going on inside the sub. I's all very immersive and drammatic. It surely deserves joining a community. A great community like this.
Hi all!!

Thanks for joining our community, and helping make it better. :shucks:

I've been around for a while, but seein' as I haven't done a bio before, I may as well toss one out there...Silent Hunter 5 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=244)

Name's Noel.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=254&pictureid=1666

Been gaming since '84 (at the ripe ol' age of 4 with King's Quest). Simulators started with MSFS 2.0. I've bought too many to count through the years, but they've centered around flight simulators and sub simulators... MSFS, X-Plane, Il-2, Aces Over Europe, Aces of the Pacific, Falcon 3, Falcon 4, Falcon AF, DCS Blackshark, A10 TK 2, Aces of the Deep, SH3 through 5, etc. I dabble a bit in some RPG's, mostly the Elder Scrolls series and Fallout. Every now and then I'll pick up a FPS or RTS just for kicks, when I feel the need to make things go boom without a lot of thinking.

As for the rest of my interests: radio control model aircraft, general fix-it guy (cars & general woodworking, gadgets, etc). I'm a bit of a Subaru fanatic, so don't get me started on the topic if you don't have an hour to kill. I love my music, but my taste is eclectic... anything from old country/rock (Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc) to Pink Floyd... got a thing for Celtic Rock, too. Discovering Avalon Rising right now (thanks Buddahaid http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/smartdark/viewpost.gif! (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1327076#post1327076)). Big into Linux, an "alternative" operating system. For those less computer orientated, it ain't Windows :D.

Been working for the Geek Squad as a "Double Agent" (In Home Service) for the past five years. It's not horrible work, but it combines the best (and worst) of dealing with the general public and computer services. It pays the bills, and has some really nice perks.

Hi

I'm Scott.
http://standardcommunication.net/Scott01.jpg
I've been in the computer gaming world for as long as I can remember. This includes Asteroids on the Atari 2600 and Parsec on the TI-99/4A. I've also been building and fixing computers for as long as I can remember. I have a lot of things that keep me occupied. Work, Silent Hunter series games, Guild Wars, and various computer and car projects. SH3 was the first of the Silent Hunter series I've come across and been on and off, but lately I've been on more and more playing and becoming more involved with the SH Series games and the SubSim Community.
Glad to be here!

Hi,

I blame it on Toshiba back in 2005 I bought a Toshiba Satellite M40 laptop for photography in the first instance and to find out whether the computer would run graphical games I bought a few Sims (initially car related which did not hold my interest), then IL-2, Pacific Fighter and IL 1946 using NaturalPoint TrackIR. I still fly occasionally but when I saw a review at SimHQ about SH3 (2007) I had to buy it. I enjoy playing chess and U-Boot Sims are essentially Chess on the Water with a bit more action ;) - . I live in NZ but was born in Australia and I lived in Germany for a period of time. My great uncle was on the battleship Bismarck - he was a radio operator (died at age 23). I work in the IT services industry.

Currently I use SH5 on a Toshiba X500 (i7, 4GB RAM, GTS 250M graphics with 1GB of GDDR5) seems to be ok for the Sim. I have a lot of respect for the great work the Modders are doing and used GWX 3.0 on SH3 (purchased of Subsim). I am looking forward to more comprehensive patches and advanced mods for SH5.

Also, weiterhin gute Fahrt! Happy hunting, Mike :arrgh!:

Lomaric-

37 years of age and live in Connecticut. I am currently on my 19th year as a US Submariner. I am a Sonar Technician currently stationed onboard the USS Missouri (SSN780) which will be commissoned here in about 2 months. USS Missouri is a Virgina Class Submarine, the newest fast attack submarine in the US Fleet.

I have been playing submarine simulators since my C64 days with Silent Service, I was so amazed with that game. I picked up a copy of Silent Hunter on my second trip to Hawaii while onboard the USS Alaska (SSBN-732) and my buddy and myself spent the next 2 days playing the game onboard until we left port.

I don't get around to posting on Subsim much but I try and read the forums as much as possible. My schedule is very busy with the work-up for our initial run, but if you want talk subs I will try and reply. lomaric@hotmail.com

Hello one and all. My name is Aaron Tataryn. I'm 36 years old, and its good to be aboard. Ive been an avid subsim player since the release of SH3. I used to be a sonar operator in the Canadian Navy, aboard the Canadian Patrol Frigate H.M.C.S. Ottawa, during which time I was primarily involved in ASW activity. I was posted to Canada's Pacific Fleet and based at C.F.B. Esquimalt on Vancouver Island. My Navy days are over now, my sea legs are gone, but hunting with sonar and torpedoes is still near and dear to my heart and I still get massive thrills from it, even if it is done on my PC. My main interests are submarines (heh), history and strategy. I like to write and I play the guitar. I live in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, and life is fine here.

The truth is: SH5 has all the potential in the world to become the best subsim ever made, but currently it falls well short of this goal. Luckily though, the SH series has always enjoyed massive improvements by some of the best that the modding community has to offer, and its getting better all the time. I'm not a modder yet myself but I hope to learn the basics here and until then, help out in any way I can through testing, feedback and such. I'm really looking forward to the future of SH5. Good Hunting!

Greets,

I am completely new to sub sims. Flight simulation has always been my hobby, but when SH5 was released, I had to jump in (no pun intended).

Being an experienced flight simmer, and a noob at sub sims, I am very thankful to you all for providing the assistance you do. It is good to see that, like flight simming, there are tons of simmers who wish to do what they can to help we greenhorns.

Thanks!

Hi my name is Ross Clunie and I live in Waikato region (just south of Hamilton) of New Zealand. Been playing Silent hunter on and off since SH2, which I thought was great. SH3 was better but I didn't get into SH4 at all. Took me a while to get into SH5 but I am really starting to enjoy it, I think that one of the problems with SH5 was the completely different GUI which was hard to adjust to, seemed to step away from the simulator style, I suspect the developers are trying to attract a different audience / player. A big thanks to all the modders out there who have made this series as good as it is and already improved SH5.
I have been playing computer games since the old Atari 800 days back in the early 80's. My favorite style of game is the military sim and I was heart broken when the "Janes" titles ended, My two all time favs were Janes Longbow and Janes Navy Fighters.
Looking forward to the improvements and mods to come.
Happy hunting to all

Hi all. My name is Todd Neil, but my nickname is Buck. I've been around
for awhile, but don't post much. I've purchased and played every game
made concerning submarines. I purchased SH5 as soon as it was released.
Bugs or not, it's great. With the support of the brilliant modding comunity,
this will probably end up the best of the bunch. My biggest complant: I
would like the clocks, and all gauges to be functional on my boat. I'm not
to happy with having to have a full time internet connection, but I'm willing
to flex, to get the sim. Anyway, modders, keep it going. You guys
are what make this site what it is. A wonderful place to share information
and relax after a long day of paper pushing. I'm a purchasing manager and
live in Des Moines, Iowa. A long way from the ocean. I was in the Navy for
7 years, on a minesweeper no less.:haha:
Keep up the good work everyone.

Hi All,

Been posting for a while, but thought I'd finally introduce myself here!

My name is James, 23 from Nottingham, England.

I left school at the age of 18 to try and forge a career in the IT industry. Didn't quite work out to plan as I ended up working in telecommunications for 4 years!
I now enjoy working as an IT Manager in a small telecommunications firm (no matter how hard I try, I can never escape telecoms!)

I enjoy Horse riding, Gliding, and, obviously gaming. Been a long time gamer, first ever subsim was Silent Hunter 1, when I was probably not quite old enough to properly understand it, but a love for all things submarine was born at an early age! I now spend a great amount of my time researching 1st - 2nd world war submarine warfare, and 18th Centuary British Naval warfare and economics (just a couple of my somewhat odd history obcessions!)

A rather bad picture;

G'day,

Jack here, from Australia.

I've visited SUBSIM on and off for quite a few years now for tips, problem solving and links, etc, what a great site!! I should have done so a long time ago but now is the time to join the community here. :salute:

I have a keen and broad interest in history and the military of all eras.

I was working for a short while with the company that released "Das Boot" in Australia back in the early '80s...remember seeing the promotional material prior to release and thinking wow, this is fascinating. The movie became a lasting favourite of mine (more recently read the book too) and, along with other movies and books (Tom Clancy's work comes to mind), stirred up an ongoing interest in submarine warfare for me.

I have memories of a U-Boot game that I played a few times on a friends PC back in the early '90s...can't remember what it was called, but I think that's what first switched me on to sub simulators... then 688 on Sega...then SH2, Destroyer Command. SH3 became one of my all time favourite games, modded to a certain extent (SH Commander, war time tunes, and a few other things). Although it's a mess at the moment, I'm really hoping SH5 can rise to greater heights via much needed patches and the excellent work of the modders here. I'm already eyeing off a few mods to dl, although I may just wait and see what the next patch brings before I start adding mods. SH5 is on the shelf for me at the moment.

I used to kick around the Pirates Ahoy forum quite a bit and did a little bit of modding for the Pirates Of The Caribbean Build Mod community. :arrgh!:

Anyway, enough about me. :D Glad to be coming aboard.

Cheers,

Jack

p.s. severniae, yeah mate, naval warfare during the Age of Sail is a fav interest of mine too...:yeah:

Hi all, I played SH3, have SH4 but haven't ever installed it for some reason (too many games maybe - also have Battleground Europe waiting to be installed), so have ended up skipping to play SH5, which I bought about four weeks ago. Personally, on balance, I think SH5 is great. I live within half a mile of where big parts of the Mullberry Dock were built for the Normandy bridge-head. There's a pub here called The Mullberry. Also, in the local civic cemetary there is a grave of four or five German U-Boat crewmen whose bodies washed onto the beaches here during WW2. Long time since I have looked at it, but the headstone says something along the lines of, "Strangers, by strangers mourned..." A reminder perhaps that real war is a huge plague and tragedy, unspeakable cruelty, and best only carried out in a game. I don't have a console and tend to only play PC games at weekends, with a few cold beers, so have only got to the second mission in the Happy Times part of the campaign. I haven't tried the online yet and wonder if it is any good? Other games I play: Red Orchestra, Battlefield Bad Company 2, MS Flight Sim X(with North Wales scenery and where I discovered you can't indeed land a 747 at Caernarfon airport), IL2, Saboteur, and one of my favourites, Empires Total War. My all time favourite sim, however, was EF2000, which was launched from the command line in MS-DOS. Pity that one hasn't been properly updated to new systems.

My name is Chad, I'm 38 years old and hail from West Bend, Wisconsin, USA. I am totally new to submarine sims, but thought that SH5 would be a good place to start. I have always had a healthy interest in WW2 and the German armed forces in general. It all started when I built my first 1/35th scale German tank. I am currently working on several Revell type 7 U-Boats. I also play airsoft.

I am looking forward to downloading and applying mods (been lurking in the mods forum), and in general learning how to rule the waves. :)

My name is Kev, i'm 28 and live in Stoke on Trent in the UK. (this is sounding like an intro from blind date). I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2008 with a degree in Network Computing and have been working for Stoke on Trent City Council ever since as a network consultant. Unfortunately my contract recently came to an end and i am now unemployed.

I have been gaming for as long as i can remember, starting with the old side scrollers and eventually moving onto online games such as Duke Nukem 3D. I eventually moved onto games such as CounterStrike, Call of Duty etc, but as i aged i found a love for Sims, especially sub sims :D I spend my spare time when not on the pc playing Airsoft or reading.

Privet iz Moskvy!

Hi from Moscow!

I've been addicted to subsim since I first picked up a Russian pirated copy of SH2 off a street trader some years ago in Moscow. Much later I got my hands on the genuine article as well as copies of SH3 and SH4 in English/German whilst on a flying visit to the UK. Then I discovered this site together with all the wonderful mods that many people far more talented than I have worked hard to put together.

SH3 is by far my favourite subsim, but I have been absent from the forum for a long time now because of incompatibility problems after having invested in a new PC with Windows 7 OS last December. Hopefully, I have managed to crack the problems that have been bugging me for several months and my return to sanity has been mostly due to the great help that this community provides.

Yesterday I bought SH5. It's a Russian version, of course, which I don't really like: I always play Silent Hunter with maximum total immersion effect, and that means that Deutsche Seeleute must speak German. There is no change-language feature on SH5 and I should like to know if the English language version of this game has a German option as does SH3.

As regards downloading a German version of SH5, I believe that the game has been withdrawn because of the presence of swastikas in the graphics.

Whatever! So far, I cannot pass a considered judgement on SH5, but my first impressions are not too good: I much prefer my heavily modded SH3, which I play with GWX Gold or WAC or NYGM. I just hope that those gifted members of this community will soon provide mods that will bring the standard of SH5 up to the level to which I have become accustomed to playing with SH3.

As regards myself, I am English. I come from Lancashire in the Northwest of England and I am 61 years old. I worked in my home county as a coal miner before moving to Germany in search of work in 1985. After that I wandered around a while before finally dropping anchor in Russia. During my wandering years, I also found time to graduate in German and Russian in 1991, having studied both in Germany and the USSR.

In effect, I emigrated to Russia 15 years ago. I say "emigrated" because, although I still hold a British passsport, I very seldom go back to my homeland.

I am married to a Muscovite and have three children, all born in Moscow, the youngest seeing the first light of day just under two years ago.

Look forward to seeing how SH5 will develop in the not too distant future.

I should have liked to enclose a picture of myself but I cannot fathom out how.

I've been a diesel sub enthusiast since I was a kid (and that was a long, long time ago) and have eagerly played various sims and games on the Commodore 64 (Silent Service), Mac (Drumbeat), and, now, PC (SH2, SH3+GWX3, SH5). Thanks to all of you hardworking forum administrators and modders for making the Silent Hunter series the best U-boat simulators ever! Hello all. Just wanted to say hi. Ive played SH4 before but could not really figure it out. Just brought SH5 and in my opinion is it's much easyier to play and get into for the newbi's, a little too easy now. Thanks all for all the info thats posted here, would be lost without it.
