Hello all. Just wanted to say hi. Ive played SH4 before but could not really figure it out. Just brought SH5 and in my opinion is it's much easyier to play and get into for the newbi's, a little too easy now. Thanks all for all the info thats posted here, would be lost without it.

Welcome aboard Steve:salute:

Donald Hogan, I live in Dallas, TX, though when my lease is up in Aug. my wife and I will be relocating to Savannah, GA. I've been involved in living history since i was 15, mostly US Civil War and WWII. Returning to college with in the next year to finish my degree, and hopefully, start teaching US history or English Lit.

Played SH3, 4, and now 5. Somewhere in the transition to SH5 i actually learned to fire a torpedo manually, well... 90% of the time now. couldn't hit the broadside of a stationary battleship at a 1000m in previous titles.

Glad to have you aboard Donald. Make yourself at home. :salute:

For those that don't know me yet, I'm krashkart. I spend more time in GT than anywhere else on the boards, but I drop in from time to time to see what's new in the SHV world.

Happy hunting. :DL

Not really much to tell, i am 29 and from Leeds in the UK, i have mostly played FPS and most of the tycoon stuff, i stumbled onto the SH series when a few people i know where playing SH4, i went to buy Sh4 but they did not have it in stock so got SH5 instead and must say i love it.

just arrived here, I am 43 old german living in Scotland and always loved sims. Apart from sneaking under water I currently play a bit Arma2 and Rise of Flight.

My first contact with sub sims was silent service and it got me hooked big time and had a look at most sub sims thereafter.

I played SH3 quite intensive with GWX3 and absolutely love it still. At first I wasn't very enthusiastic about SH5 as I read quite a bit of bad reviews but couldn't resist and got it finally.

Then of course while researching for mods and tips for SH5 I came across this site and been reading it a lot and must say this is one wicked place with lots of knowledgeable and creative persons and everyone seems very polite so I thought I'd say hello and stick around.

Greetings everyone from the land of beer and cheese. Joined the forums a few months ago and thought I probably should finally say hello and participate. My name is Patrick, 28, from Wisconsin, and I've been sub-simming since the days of Wolfpack on floppy disks. Anyways, it's very cool to be a part of such a great forum.

I'm Dave from Ontario, Canada. I'm 61 Yrs (Geez how is that possible)
I've been messing around sub sims for a while I think I had one before SNN 688 or whatever it was. I love this series, am really liking SH5, when it is finished it will be spectaular. Haven't gotten into mods yet, but am certainly considering it after reading some posts and seeing some screen shots. A little leary though. Really appreciate all the knowledge and assistance given on here. You folks are AWESOME. I work midnight audit in a hotel.:salute: later...

WELCOME ABOARD, Dave!:sunny:

Don't worry about the age. I'm right behind you, and we have several here who call us 'kids'.

As for mods, pick up the too called JSGME.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=169092

It will make it simple to load up mods, it will warn you of a possible conflict (which usually only means that one mod might make another one stop working), and it will let you take them right back out again if anything does go wrong. No muss, no fuss, no hassles, no worries.

It's the gamer's dream come true.

I'm Uffe living in Oulu, Finland, born over 65 yrs ago in Germany, when my dad served in the Kriegsmarine. He served throughout the whole war, thankfully surviving it. At first, due to suitable body size, he was in training for U-Boats, but luckily got transferred to minelayers and later Schnellboote, one of which he commanded towards the end of war. I remember several of his war stories. I keep his original Kriegsmarine service book (Führungsbuch) as a dear artifact of him.
Myself, I'm retired by now from international sales -> plenty of time for SH3, SH4, and now SH5, besides flightsims (IL-2/FB, MS FSX) and ever-tweaking my PC. I guess I actually also spend more time modding & tweaking my games than actually playing them:hmmm:. Right when I got my game how I want it, there's a new mod(version) to try out, but I guess there are plenty of other like me, but mostly somewhat (a lot) younger.:sunny:

Well, over in the SH4 forum I remember reading several corresponding US Navy stories, so maybe here on the U-Boot side the equivalent for the Kriegsmarine might be in place.
Off hand, I remember my dad talking about the North Atlantic, Norway (visiting Tirpitz), North Sea, Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland (history's biggest naval mine operation ever, against the Red Fleet), rescuing civilians at Baltic ports from Red Army advance in end phase. Is this thread OK for stuff like this?
I'm lucky he moved off U-boats early enough, as chances to survive turned out slim and thus I might not exist.;)

Probably better to start your own thread. That way this one doesn't get too cluttered and you have the freedom to both go into as much detail as you want and answer plenty of questions.

I'll dig into his service book once more for some details, but will have difficulty deciphering some entries in old German handwriting ("Sütterlin"), those letters being quite different from what's used nowadays.

I'll try to compose my entry for a "Kriegsmarine stories" thread some time soon, but some summertime RL matters might take precedence. :sunny:

You are not alone. We have all had to go through a long process of learning how to play the game because the included manual is almost worthless. Check out some of the stickied threads. They have the basic info on how to get through the tutorial, such as it is, and how to enable a lot of the necessary commands and controls that were left out of the original game. Once you get to the point where you can actually play the game, dive into the mods and start to enhance the experience. It really is a terrific U-boot simulation, but, unfortunately, you'll need to put some work into it. Luckily, there is a vital and wonderful forum (this one) to help you, and the rest of us, enjoy this game!

Welcome aboard and good hunting!:salute:

Hello Everyone!

I've been lurking these forum for a few weeks now, and I just can't believe all the great work the moders have done. Seeing the mods actual convinced me to buy the game!!

I'm 37, and currently live in Vermont.
I'm a pilot for a fractional ownership airline, flying the CE-560 Ultra.
(affectionately called the U-Boat!!:DL)

The last subsim I played was Silent Service on the Commodore 64/128/Amiga!!:har:

Hi everyone,
My name is Mark, AKA Indy, I live in the USA, Florida. I'm 50ish (I know I know), and work in a O.B. ward as a Health Unit Coordinator, a glorified a clerk, I use to be a boiler maker, but age and a bad back have caught up with me, needed a set down job! I enjoy all kinds of music except Country.

Currently studying Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic and trying to stuff Latin in on top of that, as you can tell I love the study of languages and also love history, mainly WW I and WW II.
I currently play. IL2 1946, Silent Hunter 4 and 5, Rise of Flight, Call of Duty - United Offensive Multiplayer. Have a great Day, Guys. Indy:salute:

Hi to all,
Glad I`ve found the forum as the silent hunter series is one of my favourites, been playing SH since version 2 & remember silent service on my old 48K spectrum !
During the day I support adults with learning difficulties, during the night I try to rack up some tonnage with SH, though being a family man I try to restict that to weekends !
When I`m not on SH 5, I re-enact WW2 Axis forces. All the fun with panzers & guns during the battles, but also informing the public about what it was like back then !
Lastly I need to thank the modders that have taken a broken product & made it into a thing of beauty ! I had my reservations about SH5, but now ? I love it !!
MFG !

Elo guys,
, I live in the UK and I'm currently a student in Southampton. I've just joined the site, I've been playing sub sims ever since I picked up Aces of the Deep, in fact I played aces of the deep right up to when I bought SH3, and have taken things from there. At the moment I'm really trying to get into SH5 but the manual targeting systems is frankly doing my head in as well if I'm honest I miss all of the dials and knobs on the TDC but oh well I'l crack it eventually (or die trying)

You might want to try using this terrific mod from The Dark Wraith:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1582

You might feel more comfortable.

Although, I prefer to use the more interactive interior dials and crew as my UI. I turn off the too-modern-looking HUD as much as possible. :D

Hello,

I have been away for awhile. And have found the time to play some Silent Hunter and I am greeted with SHV.

But I see also that the reviews are not glowing for this game. So I have been reading that 2 patches have surfaced so far.

Is the game playable with the current patches?

Thank You for your time. :)

Short intro.
just bought SH5 special edition and have downloaded some mods already and must say it looks pretty awesome.
My nickname was coined when I was in the Australian Navy as a radioman aboard the O class Submarines, The sub I served on was first put to sea in 72 and in looks and design wasn't all that different from the u boats of the second world war.
So you can see why this game is of such interest to me. enjoying it immensely.

I'm already being here for a while, since the days of SHII / DC!:)

So my name is Frank, currently 45 years old and I live in a small village south of the German city of Hamburg. Until the early 90s, I served eight years as a Anti Submarine Warfare Petty Officer on these two destroyers.

After that I studied computer science and after three years as an employee for a software company, I change my status 1996 into a freelance software developer. Since then I've worked in various development projects mainly for defense, federal agencies and industry. Anyone who has purchased a new Porsche within the last six years can assume that alot of parts was welded by welding-robots controled by a software I developed.:D

My gaming career began in 1980 with the Atari VCS and went on various home computers and PCs until today.

That's me:

Hi I am 32, i am from czech rep. and played sims since good old Microprose times. (my favorite game studio)

I am more of a flight sim (falcon 4, FC 2, IL 2, Black shark, FSX) fan but always played other sims (SH II, Arma II)

Never had time to play SH III (played a bit) and SH IV (skipped), but i bought SH V to support subsim genre so I registered here and hope someone will help he with my rookie skills in sub simulators.

Kapitänleutnant Siegmann back from the grave!

Hello everyone. Glad to be back after a fairly length hiatus. I'm Brian, age 21, residing in Bloomington, Indiana. Favorite sports are golf and auto racing (specifically F1). I'm usually seen with a camera in hand or reading a book. I actually just got my hands on an English translated copy of the U-Boat Commander's Handbook, 1942, so I've been buried in that.

Just now beginning to study engineering with the end goal to be an F1 designer. We'll see, lol. Hope to get reacquainted with everyone here and hope to share many a wonderful tales from the Atlantic! Best wishes and regards!

Edit: I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough once I dig through the forums, but anyone care to briefly enlighten me as to what GWX is up to these days? :)

Hi everyone :salute:,

my name is Huey, born in Germany some 40 years ago. My father served in the Navy during WWII but not on an U-Boot, myself some eight years in the Armed Forces doing some logistics.

Since the Olympics 2000 I'm in Sydney, Australia. My first game I bought was Sim City 2, enjoyed playing Wings, Doom etc. Mostly sims now, Football Manager since 08, Sim City 4 plus a ton of mods, Anno 1404 etc.

Loved F1 racing games and Helicopter and other flight sims such as EF2000, Apache Helicopter.... so many games, so little time :DL

Ah, and I played Silent Hunter III with the great Grey Wolves plus some other mods, then Silent Hunter IV and now somewhat dissapointed new with number V... need to download and install some mods I guess.

Yes, mods are necessary to really enjoy this game. They shouldn't be, but they are. Luckily, there are a host of great mods available that make SH5 the best of the series (IMHO).

Welcome and happy hunting! :salute:

Hi, I'm John original from Chicago, moved to Alaska to go to Grad school. I have watch Das Boot a billion times and still love it today. I was hoping for SH5 to be more of an great experience, but was dissappointed in the new things that were add and the old stuff that was not kept.
I was hoping the the interior of the entire sub to be a bit more cozy if you get what I mean. The engine room to be dirty and the sub to be darker. The lighing is awesome but not spectaluar in the sub. :(. A more realistic approuch, but beside that the game is alright thank you for modding all the modders out there it help a lot.:damn:

Hi all, I'm Mike Collins been playing sub-sims since AOTD, there is just somthing about submarines...........I am 59 years young and have just moved back to the UK from Tenerife where I lived with my beautiful wife for 7 years. I have a BSc in computer science and true to form for this day and age, can't get a job! I honestly believe SH5 is going to be the best sub-sim ever, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank "all" of the modders that have made this hobby so enjoyable and also Neil for this website. I have several other interests including SCUBA, Archeology and Quantum Theory. In June of 2011 I am lucky enough to have been invited to join the dig on the Pyramid of Sun in Visoco Bosnia, I can't wait to get into the 20 plus kilometres of tunnels they have started to clear. I think there could be some Earth shaking discoveries to be made there. Also like to offer my services as a tester for anyone who needs new mods tried out, just email me at the address in my sig. Nice to meet you all.:arrgh!:

I guess, as I have popped my head above the parapet for the first time in ages. Its polite to say hello. I have been lurking on this board i guess around five years or so. I play SH3 GWX Gold mostly.. and a bit of SH4 however I am gradually finding myself sucked into SH5 since I upgraded my pc, and the mods made it playable. I live in Fremantle, Australia where I am an historic tour guide around the town. Plenty of submarine history here. I just want to thank you lot for the Mods over the years.. its been a great distraction on the rare moments when I find ME time. Nothing better than the sound of bulkheads collapsing on a peaceful day off.

Well, I'm now a reluctant owner of SH5. Unintentionally, I've gone against my stance of holding out until the DRM was removed. How you ask? Well my wife was away on a mini vacation with a couple of her girl friends and she wanted to buy me a little gift. She knows a little about the games I play and usually stays away from buying anything like that for me due to my finickiness.

Well, she just happened to see me playing SH4 before she left and showed an unusual amount of interest in it and what it was called, etc.... Guess what I got for a present? Needless to say she was a bit surprised by my lack of enthusiasm when I opened that bag she handed to me... I had to quickly explain why and then jokingly/sheepishly asked if she could return it. No, she was not going to drive 8 hours to return something! At least she got it for under $20US. :D

So now I'm sitting here with this copy trying to figure out what to do. I've already played it a few times on my brother-in-law's account when I got him set up with it so I have a basic feel of the game and I've started to download mods for it. I just haven't decided if I'm going to install it yet or wait until/if the DRM is removed... I'll probably cave but am currently too busy with the few games I do have time to play to do it now.

So I thought I'd jump in here to say that I am now an owner of SH5! My name is Doug, mid 50s, main gaming passion is for flight sims- WW2, Modern, WW1 in that order of preference. I've owned all SH games and usually right after release, except this one. I also bought Silent Service and AOD. Love the looks, the mods are great for it that I've seen, I just don't agree with the principle of the chosen DRM but at least I now have a complete collection. :)

(sorry for going on so much again about the DRM stuff, just felt a need to explain based on previous posted stance on it from me and now owning the game)

Back when it came out and a bunch of us were refusing to buy it, one player posted that he had bought it, but was refusing to play it. I asked him why; the point was to vote with our wallets and if they already had his money they didn't care if he played it or not.

So, while a sympathy refusal to play is nice for my ego, and anybody else who still hasn't bought it, if you have it in your hands it would be silly not to play it. Either that, or figure out a way to return it yourself; but that would probably be equally silly.

You have it, so play it. :sunny:

You're completely right SS, and that's why I said I'll probably cave as I was thinking the same general thing, kind of silly not to under these circumstances. So I'm sure once real life calms down a bit I'll install it and check it out more in-depth than I did before. Thanks for the validation! ;)

Hey everyone, thought I'd pop into this thread and introduce myself.

My names Andy Mackay, I'm 27 years old and live in Fife, Scotland (would name the town but it's embarrassing lol). The first game I remember playing was the Battleships for the ZX Spectrum and also battle chess on an old DOS system. Just finished a computing course at college no less than two months ago and due to start the next level course in September, no idea what area on computing I would like to enter into though :hmmm: ....anyway, been playing the SH series since SH/2 and have 3, 4 + 5 also. Currently enjoying SH3 again (after dual booting my win7 pc with XP so I could play it without hassle  ) with the GWX3.0 and various other mods....loving it btw (praise to the modders :yeah: )

I do have SH5 installed and playable, waiting to see if other fixes come out for it though...very tempted to install that SH3 UI mod for it though since I find the SH5 UI hard to get used to...

Hey, Nate here, been playing subsims since AOTD, unfortunately I don't own it anymore. Although I still have Grey Wolves, SH2, 3, 4, & 5.

24, Live in Nebraska, currently a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force. By the AF's definition I'm a Aerospace Maintenance Engineer, but I prefer the term crew chief which mean I fix & break jets for a living. :D

I finally bought SH5 after I found it 50% off on amazon, so I couldn't resist. Honestly, I never played the vanilla SH5, as soon as it was installed and the patch was installed I started downloading mods, and I must say looking at the progression on the mods already and what great mods are already out there, SH5 has the potential to be an amazing game.

New to the forum; from the Jensen Beach, FL. area. Have been CO of the 10th with ubootwaffe@googlegroups.com since forever (1990's) and probably the most interesting thing is that I am an honorary crewmember of U-664, with a certificate signed by Oblt. Graef. Got that a few years back with 3 others (including my, then, 7 year old son) for doing online history on that particular boat. Kommandant was still alive in Germany and in communication with one of the crewmwmbers who coordinated this for us. When someone mentions the 9th or the Laughing Sawfish, I feel that I have a special connection to it all.

Commercial pilot for 30+ years, lived aboard my boat with family for several years, newly re-married (hey, eat, drink and remarry!), sims began with C-AOD...remember that? I can still hear the synthesized music of the Emperor Waltz as I dived for battle on my windows 98-SE computer. Somehow, I feel like I am reliving a past life with these games.

Anyway, glad to meet you all. Sharkhunter for over 10 years, Life member.

Calling the role....

Hi peeps, no pic today, but words will do, im not that handsome anyways.

40 years old, Dutch but immigrated to Canada late 2007. Took a while to settle, now balancing out.

Playing since the days of AOD, on my then kickass 386DX2 (not sure, im actually confident it was the Pentium Pro 200 Mhz...), still regretting not having the FLOPPIES anymore :) wish i'd could reinstall that piece of software. I skipped SH2, moved to SH3 when it released and have been playing that for a long while with the GWX mod.

Skipped SH4 and actually refused to buy SH5 till a few days ago, yet, as I had a financial easteregg I just bought a new kickass machine and... could... not... help... myself... walking... to... the... gamesection... of... the... shop...

To be blunt..., in my personal opinion, SH5 vanilla is a 50 dollar joke, an insult and the ultimate sign of contempt from Ubisoft towards its paying clients.

So... here I am... trying to make the best out of the basic framework SH5 vanilla provides me... I wont be a grabber... Here to stay and hopefully being able to contribute...

See ya'll around

Take care.

Slowly working it out.

What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

What do you mean? An African or European Swallow?

And what is the capital of Assyria?

I knew someone would recognize these questions.

Time to introduce myself after a couple of years on SubSim:

Description
I live in Warsaw, Poland. I have no truly useful skills, thus in whatever publishing house or IT company I work I pretend to be a professional editor and copywriter - although I prefer to consider myself a proofreader, or just Dilbert.

Less useful skills include knives and razors sharpening (+7), game designing (+3), listening (maxed), finding excuses for not having sex (1 less than maxed), doing homework with my daughter (-9, explains the previous skill), winning WW2 on land and seas, and occasionally other armed conflicts too (+6.66, not +10 because I don't fly), reading (maxed), pretending to know foreign languages (+5), calling and performing artillery strikes (+8), speech (+2), smoking (+9).

Main interests/hobbys include: insomnia, boldness, belly growing, not moving too much.

Main identity traits include: a human, a secular-materialist, a European, a Slav, a Thornian, a Pole, a graduate of my University.

Documentation
This guy holds a statuette of me in an African warrior outfit. Screenshot taken about a year ago in my birth-city of Toruń (Thorn), the true capital of Kuiavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

I've always been fond of the quote attributed to Mark Twain:

well it seems like a good game, after playing SH3 and SH4 I have no idea how to do anything anymore but i'll learn. How do you start a new patrol when you are back in port (in the sub pen) and is there a tdc or something similar because I put manual targeting on but all it seemed to let me do was point and fire

Also what are some favorite mods that people use

I think ,here at subsim are many different sorts of subsim users, and everyone have his own way/preferences about how to play SH5, therefore I think only you and nobody else can tell you how you want to play your own SH5 simulator, I suggest you to see the SH5 Mod forum and choose your mods, of course the JSGME tool is a must to have to quick enable or disable the mods

Hi, Im Simon from London, UK. Im 29, a Satellite engineer and Ive been playing games since the C64 days in the mid 80's. SH5 is my first crack at a sub sim but i'm loving it apart from the bugs... Mostly been into FPS over the last few years but they seem to be getting a bit samey, so thought i'd give blowing ships up a go.

When Im not wasting my life playing games I like travel (doing lots of road trips in Europe recently) Drinking with mates and playing a bit of guitar and drums.

Hi there,

I'm Arnold, 41, from Julianadorp, the Netherlands.

My 1st subsim experience was Silent Service on the C64.
Since then I've been playing Wolfpack, 688, Sub Command, Dangerous Waters, Destroyer Command, SHIII, SHIV and now SHV.
I guess you might say that I love naval sims! But I also play RTSs and FPSs.

A request to you SHV modders:

Please don't release mods so fast! ;) I can't finish a single patrol, because every two days, or so, I have to restart the patrol with improved mods!! :har:

But seriously, you modders are truely enhancing gameplay and I'm really thankful for that!

In real life I am an airline pilot flying across europe (Boeing 737). I am married to my beautiful wife and have two great kids.

It's allways a pleasure to be in these forums. People are very helpful and there's tons of information on the games. Lately I'm spending more time here reading stuff than actually playing the game!

Happy hunting!

Hi all,

I was member on this site from back at the SHIII days and before that, but that account died since i havent logged here for 1 year or 3.. I got involved in the cod series, thus have played cod3,4,5 and mw2 later years, probably getting CODBO aswell..

Now i have purchased both sh4 will addons and sh5 and i am finding sh5 to be as good as any previous sumbsims if not even better, yet i havent seen the worst bugs yet, only have 3 patrols behind. sh4 feels old already in comparance..

I will mod up my game further, only using a few essential ones as of now.

Hope this community will last long with sh5!

Hello all,

Signed up to this excellent site back in 2004, should have said hello back then after I started playing SH3...was this site going during the days of SH1/2? Thoroughly enjoyed SH2, SH3 along with GWX3 gold. Dabbled with SH4 and then stuck on The Fall of the Rising Sun but never consistently played it as I'm interested in U boats and the Atlantic Campaign.

Anyway my names Steve, 46 years young, living in the UK up north up in the Pennines...well off the flood plain, with my second wife and her pan lid whose a know it all teenager. The wife just can't get her head round the Silent Hunter series though, but has no problem following football which I don't understand and vehemently despise.

I have a keen interest in PC's, anything optical - cameras, astronomical telescopes and periscopes of the simulation variety, global politics, philosophical thought, social injustice, unicorns, fairies and hobgoblins.

Currently working for a large UK charity (which was set up the day after the outbreak of WW2) and has offices based within our local hospital, all cheery stuff. In the main it helps people sort out their debt, death and welfare problems...business is currently booming!

Wasn't going to get involved with SH5 mainly due to DRM, final release problems and poor reviews on Amazon and the like. However after checking back in here, doing my own research and seeing the mods so slavishly produced; I recently took the plunge modded it up and have not regretted it...although despite her understanding the wife might.

Thanks to all you mod developers out there, if it wasn't for you guys I'd still be playing COD4.

Take care folks

Wow--as David Letterman says, "It's like I have a twin!" So I might as well join the roll call. Have played WWII sub sims since the MicroProse days. Never knew why they held such fascination for me until I read a line in a review of Aces of the Deep. The line read something like, "A successful WWII submarine commander requires the skill of a surgeon and the nerves of a riverboat gambler." Hmmm...have I learned something about my personality, or just the Caspar Milquetoast self-idealized version of my personality?

Anyway, it's back to wading through the mod swamp. But that's not a complaint--I'm finding the wading to be quite a pleasant experience. Thanks for all the modders' hard work! Now I'm feeling guilty for not paying you for your efforts.

I played SHIII a few years ago and recently bought SHIV which I also enjoy. I tend to play SHIV in the afternoon and SHV at night.

I should say hello here, I have been lurking here but more active on SH III, SH IV and some really old areas and sims here.... I bought V a while ago not knowing if it would work on my system and then I upgraded and now have a fairly decent card and system and it seems happy.

I now hope to learn the rope, gather in the essential mods...and launch ..fairly soon.

I am very interested in things naval, coming from naval stock on both sides...US, Brit and German...which gave me some very interesting insights into those times now moving in the the past. Two of my cousins were U boat commanders and both were lost with their boats....another cousin on my mom's side was skipper of USN BB 39 at Pearl and remains at his post. My grandfather was early into the US sub program and wrote some of the then early doctrine on sub nets and anti sub theory....tho he was mostly a surface commander..

From what i see so far of V, it is super. And the mod work is making it better. I am a white knuckle skipper myself still, no pro but very interested esp in the U boat side of things and hope to contribute in time as i can from what i know from what i learned from family history. Cheers and hello and thanks to all for the great mod work all around.

I am an oldie somewhat myself, age wise...just turned 58, older but not really wiser...just glad to be here.:salute:

Welcome mate - what an interesting story - thank you.

I played SH5 for many months and then bought SH4 which I am happily playing at the moment. Played SH3 many years ago. Yeah SH5 needs a good rig - I also bought a new one to play SH5 as well but even SH4 on full graphics gives the card a workout.

All the best!

PS I am older than you by about 3 years. :DL

Hi and thanks ....i have been shy partly as i am older and feel much less skilled than many here, my love of naval history and knowledge and experience have been with real men and ships....but certainly not in operational command as we are here in the sim.... and i have been shy at trying some of the things that many seem to be very good at.... but i will keep trying.

It is quite amazing what we can experience here in this sim...and the mods and improvments being made are equally amazing.

thanks for the reply...and i shall endevour to keep learning. Partly for me the chance to experience things that i have heard about and read in letters and journals and logs kept in the family really intrigues me..... and Op Monsun in SH IV even came to include the last engagment of my cousin's boat the U 223, the mod maker was kind enough to include it.... so there is a real personal aspect to this all for me. ... i hope to be able to get good enough to see so much more.

Hello, Subsim mates!

First off, I'll start by saying the community here impresses me in many different aspects. I have been to many different game community websites and this one by far seems the most mature, professional, and informative that I have come across.

I am new to the Silent Hunter series, having bought SH5 on sale from Steam. I am enjoying every minute of it and it is definately hard to pull away from the computer while playing it. I remember seeing silent hunter games on the shelves back in the day, and I had no idea what I was missing. I am only experimenting with a few mods right now, but I can tell I will dabble in many more.

For now, I must commence radio silence. I will renew contact in 2 hours. Out.

Right now I'm completely hooked on SH5, it is one of the most immersive games I've played in a while.

Happy hunting all :)

My name is Chris (actually Christoffer, but when speaking English i usually short it to Chris for simplicity), i live right outside Stockholm, Sweden. Been living on and off in short intervals in Miami (on the beach, actually) last 10 years.

I'm an excavator operator by profession, photographer by heart, but educated to be a flight mechanic. Nothing's right there...:hmmm: I also have electronics as a hobby, I like making things from scratch! I also like playing my guitar (or more like it; trying to play my guitar) and playing Snooker. Not simultaneously though..that'd be..weird.

I haven't been playing subsims all that long (not counting Hunt for Red October (or whatever it was named) back when I was a kid in the 80s), SH4 on and off a year or so. What I've missed is the "running around the boat" thing, so when I saw that SH5 was like that, I ordered it right away. Now, I won't say I'm disappointed, but it's like I have a hundred ideas on how it could be really cool, and I wonder if none of the developers had the same ideas...Gonna have to see what mods to get to address the worst issues.
Would it be legal to sell a car where the doors would fall off sometimes, or where the car wouldn't ever start again if you closed the door in the wrong sequence?

So well, ranting on...that's a little about me anyway.
About pictures, I'm not so often on that side of the camera ;) But I got one for ya. It's me with my precious (that'd be the mint condition -66 Hasselblad 500C with the -67 Carl Zeiss Sonnar 150mm I'm holding).

James, aged 51+, Gibsons, BC, Canada. I love boats, boating, being on or in the water. I like computers and playing sims, especially the SHs. I started with SHI when it first hit the shelves, I was hooked. Heard II was a waste of time so didn't bother. Loved III, I preordered the SE version of SHIV, am totally disappointed with V. I am a student of of the military and have a very large library of fact based histories in print and disk.
I have populated the UBI SH forums since 2005, but apart from downloading mods, this is my first posting on SUBSIM.

Ahoy mateys! (Clichéd enough for you all? ;))

I'm Nix (Rich), 22 and got into SH3 a while ago. Then the whole moving out bit of life took part and it appears i've lost all my skills for the seas upon installing SH5!!

I live just outside of London in Hertfordshire and looking forward to being a fellow subsimmer! But definitely have a lot to learn:yeah:

Hello, my name is Andreas from Germany. I live near Cologne and started with SH II, like to play III and I don't know what do do with V. IV is not opened, yet.
I'm very interested in submarines, the technical and historic aspects of them.

I'm member of the German submarin museum in Cuxhaven Altenbruch which is well known and a great source for diving into all submarine subjects: http://www.dubm.de

Hmm...registered here in 2005 and dont think I've ever introduced myself.

Started off with sub sims with Red Oktober back on the C64 a long time ago.

Graduated to Aces of the Deep and Silent Service, before upgrading to SHIII. I stopped playing SHIII a while back but with the release of SH5, I bought it (SH5) but it just didn't feel the same as SHIII.

I re-installed SHIII with GWX recently and have been enjoying it. Having said that, I have given SH5 another chance...

... with TDW's mega mod and a couple of other mods. Well, I have to say I love it. Now if the campaign is as good as SHIII I will stick with SH5.

Just wish there was a SH5 commander :)

I would post a picture but I have no digital images to share at this time.

My name is Mike and I have been playing PC games since I was about 14, I started with Mechwarrior 2 and other sci fi sims and moved to Jane's combat sims because I liked the idea of learning about the featured platforms.

For a long time I played 688(I) and got pretty good at it for a kid of that age, then I saw Das Boot...

I craved that kind of experience but at the time I was unaware of the Silent Hunter series so that interest kind of took a backseat to getting better at Counterstrike and the like.

For a long dark time I was really only able to play console games (xbox and xbox 360) because my computer just could not handle any new games, though I did find out about Silent Hunter and purchased SH3 from direct2drive.

I was blown away, the amount of immersion was so amazing and the ability to apply real tactics that the WWII aces used was something that I could not get enough of.

Now that I have a new computer up and running, I have been playing SH4 and SH5 and really enjoying both of them. (sugar boats FTW!!)

When I am not commanding a S-boat or a U-boat, I am working at home depot, reading various books, playing blues and jazz guitar and trying my hand at writing (expect some patrol reports!)

Born and raised in VT but living in Providence RI...I gotta get over to battleship cove sometime to see the Sub they have...anyone care to attend with me?

Hello :)

My name is John but most refer to me as Jack or Jax. After a famous quote from Al Pacino in Scent of a woman where he wanted the bar in his room covered with bottles of John Daniels and his counterpart answered "don't you mean Jack Daniels Sir?" Pacino said, He may be Jack to you son, but when you've known him as long as I have...

Hence...Jax

I am a nearly 50 year old kid and and being of that age immersed in what mayhem WWII brought to our parents and elders. Then school and books furthered and deepened the knowledge or stories from our elders. Our generation or much of them at least, got fascinated. Both fascinited and appauled by its horrors and the people whom suffered them or implied them, the technical novelties it brought, sometimes its beauty too or the heroism on either part, the sheer bestiality of it. On many issues as humans it brought us back centuries to what man really is, a beast, an animal. Kill or be killed, eat to not get eaten. And out of that mayhem, out of that horror a new world humanism rose. A better one, not yet perfect but surely a better one. That in part explains my fascination to SHIII and 5. The duality of it. The kid playing a U boat captain with all his chevalry and loyalty to his nation or ideology yet destroying vessels with people on board to win a war. The kid trying to win over an artificial intelligence and when done so upping a level in realism to win again. We, I, see this as playing but when I really start thinking about it, it amazes me what I actually am. How the hell can I be so exalted after sinking a vessel with 1500 people on board. Or with tons of food that would stop people from starving? The kid that wants to beat the AI I hope.
That said, I am not a lunatic or a depressed human wreck, I just enjoy beating the AI. And well, the enemy I beat is computer generated. No lives are taken or destroyed. The theater of war when the kid plays is virtual and luckely so. The 50 year old man is an IT manager from Belgium whom likes to travel, whom is happy with his wife. Even expecting a newborn! Reads, watches movies, loves football(soccer) a good glass of Champagne or a decent beer with his best friends. In short, the small things in life which makes it worth living. :DL

A man and a kid that is who I am....and I do so love them both. Duality.....
Btw...I am so envious of all in this forum that can play an instrument or have an artistic talent! I really suck at that:cry:

Hi, I'm a SH5 newbie from the Sonoran desert of Tucson, AZ. I've been doing ‘train simulations’ since I am a disabled former Locomotive Engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad and Amtrak, the American passenger railroad. I enjoy historic computer simulations and think Silent Hunter 4 and 5 are fantastic though I don't' know how to use them - yet. I hope I can learn lots tips to using them from you guys here at the Subsim forum. Besides sims with the PC, I work part time as an astronomy teacher at the National Observatories west of Tucson, AZ. Thanks for all the info posted which will help me get going with the subs of Silent Hunters.

Hi there. First post here. Born in Argentina, living in sunny Miami Beach FL. I used to play occasionally Silent Hunter III and Silent Hunter IV, mostly at around 85% realism (in case anyone cares).

I'm an old rusty gamer whose first naval sim was Strike Fleet for the Commodore 64/128. I think my first sub sim was Hunt for Red October or Red Storm Rising... Oh, the good old times.

I just got Silent Hunter V when I saw the price tag finally dropped to 18 bucks plus taxes at Best Buy and after reading about the awesome work the modders did to make it enjoyable. They deserve all the credit for SH5. Whoever designed SH5 deserves credit too. Whoever executed on the design, was most likely pushed too hard by the suits at Ubisoft to release it on schedule despite the unfinished state. In the end, we got an expensive Alpha version on the market with a DRM a little too strict for most people's taste. It ended up being neither a sim nor a game: just an unfinished piece of software. At least it's moddable and there's people with enough time and interest in their hands to patch it up and enhance it (thank you, guys).

So here I am, probably to start posting newbie questions soon.

Cheers.

So glad I found these boards! I'm Gary from Houston, TX. I'm 54 and have been playing the SH series since the days of SH to SH5. I really enjoy SH5. The thing I miss most is using the external view to focus on my boat (instead of having it just running off into the horizon) so I can take screenshots.

All in all, I think it's a great game.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of ya. Peace!

I am Kenn from Columbus, Ohio. I have always loved sub sim games since Silent Service for the Atari.

SH5 is growing on me, I seem to have trouble with some mods, if they don't use the JGSME, I have no clue how to install them. Like the real german flags for example. I am also trying to figure out how to set the Lut torpedos.

I admit I am really used to the controls of SH3 and I have yet to figure out how to set the pattern for these torpedos.
