Hello everybody!

My name is Stephen, I live in Texas and I am 31 years old. Silent Hunter 1 was my first subsim game. Just found out about this site while trying to get some mods for SH5 looks like I will get some for SH4 as well.

I like war sims and strategy games. One of my all time favorite war games was Pacific Theater of Operations 2.

I've been using this site for quite a long while and would like to send a general shout out to those who have helped foster my interest in the underwater world.
I started with SH3 and came across it randomly over Direct2Drive. Since then I've eagerly awaited SH4 and SH5 (in spite of some let downs).
Key members like TDW, Sober, TheBeast, Stoianm, SteelViking etc have helped to make SH5 my game of choice.

Looking forward to SH Online. Hopefully all the lessons of what worked (and what didn't) will result in an incredible game, or if not then I hope they make modding easy for the experts here.

Hey, my name is Carl, I don't do pics either. I know this thread is old, but thought eh....what the hell. I've played the SH games since SH2, quit for a while & played Call Of Duty type games, got angry with that, threw my controller in the woods, & just started with SH5. In the process of getting some patches & mods, there are so many, but going by Sober's posts. Would appreciate any advice. I'm 32, I work as a fabricator for a NASCAR Nationwide team in NC. I have a huge interest in WWII history, started with the U-505 in Chicago, been there many times, absolutely love it. I'm not a fan, though, they're fanatical.
I'm very impressed with the amount of information & help everyone here offers.

Yorgos which is Greek for George, though I'm not a George, just Yorgos.
27 y/o, Thessaloniki, Greece though I'll be moving to Stockholm, Sweden by November.
Freelance cg designer.

My grandpops served aboard a Greek sub in WW2, the "famous" RHS Papanikolis, which was the most successful of the war for the RHN. Still I am certain most of you won't even know of her since her accomplishments are dwarved by those of the U-boats, American subs and those of other submarine forces.

Naval sims are the only ones I really like. Fleet command and SH3/SH4 are among my favourite, but I won't deny I pretty much like SH5 when patched and modded, as well.

Hello, my name is Max.

I'm 31 software developper. I play a vast amount of games but simulators (especially flight) always had a special place for me. I like games that need time and dedication to master. If I'm good at it in 5mins flat, chances are I won't play for long!

I've been playing SH3 pretty much since it came out and only just noticed SH5 has been released (duh...how long ago?) but that's just the measure of how good SH3 +GWX Gold is of course. SH3 would be SH1-T without those GWX guys. So, on the grounds that there are some pretty talented and dedicated people (who incidentally deserve all the support we can give them) who will probably drag the bug-ridden rip-off that Ubi generally pass of as a market-ready game in this genre, I've got my copy of SH5 and, once I find out how to access the tutorial mission, will no doubt spend the next few days modding the thing and trying to love it. The fact is though, if SH5 ends up being anywhere near as good as SH3+GWX, it will be worth the effort. Meantime, do this: http://www.subsim.com/sh2fleet_forms/donation.htm

Hello my name is salamanderrake, age 32, and this is the first sub sim that I own or played. I bought sh5 from steam cause I seen a video of sh3 but I wanted to start out with something a little newer so I looked around and found sh5 and so i got it. The only problem is I'm on Linux and would have to run it through wine. Well it didn't work for a about 20 days for reasons that make no sense until I just happened to install a new wineprefix and it just happened to work. Started watching lets play videos and found out about a long list of mods to make the game a little better so did a search and this place popped up a lot, as a matter of fact I might be wrong but this might be the only place to get not only mods but also unofficial support for the sub sim games. Its just nice to see a community that isn't divided which cause's a lot of sims to go down hill because users have to go all over the place to get what they need. It's also nice to see a community supporting a site like this and reflects on how well your doing your jobs. I believe I will enjoy my time here and also enjoy the sim more because of a community like this. And yes i know i go all over the place.

Hello forum -

on the one I am one of the old gang playing SHIIIGWXgold at 100 or 90% reality - so as I read the devastiational critics at Amazon I turnd my mind away from buying SH5 - and awaited the modders to reanimate this ß-Version. And they have done fine work!

:up:Thaaaaanks a lot...

On the other hand I like luft46.com and I am dealing with the 1947 Type of a Type XXIII D² with features from the constructionboard and extra special features further developed Alberich III, the 750mm diameter H-torpedos mith a length of 8.000 mm designed for the H-Class battleships or newly invented by me :ping:: a asdic-orientated floating to its source... called Loge II

I have already NOT started with the SH5/OHII installation - I followed the tip from here to by the DVD version.

But because due to the system requirements and the real facts of my PC engine my machine seemes to be "undermotorisized" (like the KingTiger was)
I only use a INTEL CORE 2QUAD 6600 2,40 GHz Engine
with
6GB RAM

but only a NVIDEA 8600 GTS GraphicCard

everything is working under Win7Prof
...will the ole machine be fit enought for SH5 OHII? :hmmm::hmmm::hmmm:

This is the very begining of my story here...

Welcome aboard, Knight!

I have the same CPU running under WinXP with 2Gb RAM..
This is quite enough for the game + NewUI + OHII + many small mods..
and not enough for MTNS-mod and some other hard mods..

EDIT: my mod list you can see here - http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=76782

My name is Job, I am from the Netherlands and I play computer games/simulations or make music with my band (I play the piano, guitar and synthesizer) when I don't have to work for school. Right now my favorite game/simulation is Silent Hunter V with all the mods from Sobers list. So if Sobers is reading this, thanks a lot for putting this list together and of course a huge thank you to everyone who has put all that effort in making the mods.

Have a nice day and sink'em ;)

German Knight, when you install SH5 an app will pop up and check your computer to see if it can handle SH5. At least it does with XP. Tho I'm not sure about Win 7 as I'm running XP. But if SH5 is running ok for you now, OHII should be fine also.

The only drawback you might have is your 8600 GTS grafhics card. I'm not sure but I believe the 8800 GT is the oldest NVIDEA card that will run SH5. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. It will tell you on the back of the packaging. Other than that you should be good to go.

And welcome to SubSim. Life as you know it will now change drastically. SubSim and the Silent Hunter series are very addictive. ;)

If there are no mods installed at all, it is possible that something happened to the files and the installation got corrupted.

As far as I understand from what you are saying, you started getting CTDs on a vanilla game out of the blue? In that case it is either problem with UBI - I would suggest trying to a) see if when you are offline mode on UPLAY it works b) launch the game in safe mode?

If all the doesn't work - try re-installing the game.

Figured I'd give this a shot. Back when I was a kid, Silent Service was one of my favorite games, so I've kept with it through Silent Hunter 4. I'm a bit worried about what's been said about this, though, but hopefully modding will fix most of the issues.

My name is Gerry, I am from Larne County Antrim N. Ireland. I already own sh3 and sh4 and I enjoy them both. I would sit and play them for hrs.

I have just bought sh5 although reading the sh5 forums alot of people disliked the game. I have only played it for around 5 hrs over a couple of days. I see there is alot of mods for sh5, can anyone tell me which ones to go for to make sh5 a better game to play?

Hi all, I have beenplaying sub sims since way back in the apple 2gs days. first game was sub battle simulator by epyx I believe. Then on to silent service, aces of the deep, the first silent hunter and the rest of the series.
Also love strategy games, not to skilled with the mod scene but trying to figure it out. Live in the Tahoe area of northern Ca. When I'm not on the computer I'm usually on skis

Hi,

Not a long-time subsimmer, and I think I was spoiled as my first game was Silent Hunter 3 (and then GWX on top - what an awesome combo).

Never liked the look of SH 4, but I've got the itch again and just ordered a copy of SH 5. Now I'm browsing around the patches and fixes and mod options to work out how and what to fix and change.

Lots of reading to do. The stuff people create here is unbelievable.

Hello.

I am Magos; and I joined here to enhance my subsim experience. My first subsim game was Silent Hunter 4, but I abandoned it after a few days due to it being a bit too complex for my casual gamer mind. I've given these hardcore simulation games a chance and have just recently gotten Silent Hunter 5. So far, I am enjoying it.

I won't be posting much though, just downloading mods.

Hi there, newbie to subsims saying hello. I'm Del, from the UK, 47, been into hardcore driving sims for years, Grand Prix Legends etc, and flightsims ( First Eagles, IL2, Rise of Flight)
I came across a vid of SH5 on youtube, and became fascinated, watched a few more, found these forums, had a good old read, and then ordered SH5. Just waiting for it to turn up now.
Quite excited, its not every day I get into a whole new branch of simming.
And I have to say, this is a very impressive community, with a very active modding crew, which of course makes all the difference to one's long-term enjoyment of any serious sim. Thanks, guys!

Greets all, wanted to pop in and say hello! Picked-up a steam copy of SH5 and found your community whilst digging for a keyboard map. First subsim I ever played was on my Atari system – don’t remember the exact model but it was one of those keyboard + disk drive + monitor ‘systems’ XL or ST, something like that. Good ol’ Silent Service -- beyond that, only Janes 688i Hunter Killer and now Silent Hunter 5. The shallowness (get it) of my subsim gameplay is in no way indicative of my utter fascination with submarine simulation games though.

I’m 38, dwell on the east coast of Florida, and, realistically, will mostly lurk at the site, garnering from the knowledge of its contributors.

see y'all around.

It sure was, I miss all the TLAM and side type missions from that game. 688I hunter/killer was close but not that same level of fun. But it's hard to beat a WWII sub sim for relaxing.

G'day from Down Under

I'm James, 22 and I live in southern NSW, Australia. I've dabbled in sub sims since I first got a computer in ... 2002? First some old ones like Aces of the Deep. The first main one I remember is Silent Hunter 3, Apart from that I've got Dangerous Waters and SH4 and 5.

Hey guys, name's Darryl and I'm 20 (until the 11th :woot:) and live in South Africa. Studying mechanical engineering at Stellenbosch University and absolutely dig WWII historically accurate naval warfare games. So naturally been a huge fan of the SH series (3,4 & 5) since I recieved SH3 as a gift some years back. Been playing SH5 for almost 3 years now but only discovered the EPIC benefits of the mods offered here this week! :rotfl2:I must say, got me as excited as walking into the store and seeing SH5 on the shelf for the first time. So of course been playing like crazy since I installed my first mod. This is a great forum and all the laughs and smiles I've had reading through posts has made for a brilliant experience. Would just like to send a huge thanks to TheDarkWraith, NauticalWolf and KZS for the mods I've installed thus far - they are wonderful and it's seriously smiles all 'round this side :D

Hello people.
I've been lurking the SH fora for over a year now (I've actually read *every* thread in the SH3 forum that was on topic), so after joining and making a few posts (and truck-loads of downloads) I should introduce myself.
Name's Ed, and I'm a 45yo Aussie Instrument Engineer (so if anyone has questions about measurement and control systems on old subs I can probably come up with an answer (I'm no expert on subs, but their working bits look identical to many systems I've worked on in older refineries/oil-rigs - I even contracted out to Siemens for a while, whose name I see scattered around U-boat control-gear).
My interest in naval sims started with the original Harpoon, and I can still remember the excitement when feeding the 51/4" floppies into the drive. It was searching for links to the Harpoon games that lead me to this site. I remembered that i had a copy of SH2 somewhere, chased it up and found a copy of SH3 as well (if anyone in Oz would like the SH2 disk, pm me an addy and I'll post it off to you) and I've been hooked ever since
As a proviso I should mention that I have a chronic illness (not whingeing, just explaining) that often puts me out-of-action for a week or two, so if I don't reply to posts directed at me immediately, I'm not being an ignorant bastard and will answer asap.
And, finally, a great big GOODONYA to all the modders that have turned these games into simulations.
cheers,

ed

Hello everyone, I'm Jeff from Hong Kong. After a long hiatus, I finally picked up my copy of SH3 the other day and figured out how to install it on Vista. I remember playing it like crazy when it first came out but when I switched to Vista, I couldnt figure out how to work it so I just dropped it.

After seeing how fun it was again, I decided to try and upgrade to SH5 and, with the mods, it works like a beaut. Quite different from SH3 in gameplay (still rough with the torpedoes) but I'm enjoying it!

I'm usually a lurker on forums, sneaking around and stealing tips ( :arrgh!: ) but I'll try and post once in a while :D

SH5 has me stumped. Pretty buggy. Sure be nice to get must have list of Mods to run this good. PC specs not an issue, have power gaming system.

Danmack here, ex STS1SS, First boat was the Nautilus SSN571, up to decomission although not part of decom crew because of med status. Next I road the Andrew Jackson SSBN619 for 1 patrol and the Nathaniel Greene SSBN 636 for 6 more patrols before getting out in the mid 80's.

SH5 has me stumped. Pretty buggy. Sure be nice to get must have list of Mods to run this good. PC specs not an issue, have power gaming system.

Absolute Noob here when it comes to this game and downloading as we speak!
Im Bastiaan from Amsterdam, currently 22 years old.

Never really heard of submarine-sim games untill I found Silent hunter V on steam 2 days and had a look on the gameplay.

I've basically been raised on water and used to be a sailinginstructor myself plus i find the WW II very interesting...

So Im looking forward to play this game ( in 5 min ) :D

Hi everyone :Kaleun_Salute:

I saw SH5 going cheap in a local shop and thought I would give it a go after seeing that it was supposed to run on linux via wine. After about 2 days googling, experimenting and several reinstalls later I finally have it working and patched.:D No mods yet. I thought I may play a mission stock before I risk my install.

I did have SH3 some years ago but never played it much so sub sims are really new to me so I will probably be reading these forums a lot.

Just found sh5 thanks to my son on steam, more used to fsx so bit of a steep (or should that deep) learning curve.
Its nice to find a game that involves thinking rather than just running round shooting. Thanks to all the guys for a great site and fantastic mods, I am currently working through a long list of mods by sober, ive only done a few but the graphics have improved already. Better get back to reading more of the posts as there is so much to learn....

Hi all, my name is Henk, i'm from the Netherlands and i am 55years young.
The reason i landed here is that , a few days back i got myself SH5, and i was shocked in what state it was.
Was did the sucsesor of the SH3 that i played some years ago ?
The graphics are great but it is a bughouse.
No worry let patch this game....What? Now that didnt help much.
Ok, where are the hardcore sub-simmers......and i am glad i found this site.
A great help in getting this sim up and running, lot of advice a very needed downloads in the mod selection.
I started computing in '81, and have seen all the sims come by, mostly flightsims, but also remember the sillent service i played.
I always apreciate the power of the community, and the people wo are dedicated to make mods and run sites to help others.
Remember i'm from the dark days without the internet ;)
Anyway ive got SH5 up and running and i have a great time with it.
I installed JSGME and some mods i realy needed first, and now its time to polisch this sim.

ps,: were is the musicband that played when you left for a mission, one of the greatest moment in SH3

best regards
sorry for bad Englisch

btw are these in the right order or not correct ?? please say

You are young!

I'm glad to see you have SH5 working better than it was.

The band is one of many things they did away with when they made the game "better", which is why I still play SH3. SH5 is a great game, but it's still missing something, for me at least. Anyway, I hope you post more. There are a few of us old guys around, and more are always welcome.

Been playin for years, struggling to play through repeated crashes. Then along came "The Dark Wraith" along with several other great modders. Total respect to the mod devs for the time and work they've put into SH5, a game basically broken outa the box.
It's just fantastic to play with the mods enabled. Many fixes and visual upgrades but the User Interface mod by The Dark Wraith is the game saver as far as I can see..
I had to reinstall Windows and found the updated mods once reinstalling all the patches and updates for the games again. So it was kind of an accident that I'm now playing SH5, after stumbling upon the new mods. Pretty stoked.
Subsim rocks. Finally, can play this game the way it was meant to be played from the start. What an improvement.
Can't seem to get it to work with the Invidia 310.70 drivers though. Others have experienced the same and have reverted to the 306.97 drivers. And I'm talkin a fresh install too, patched to the 1.2 latest and last patch, just in case you were thinkin that it was because of the mods and you were off the hook on this one cause you're running it vanilla or patched without mods, lol.. Yeah just to be clear, allota people have experienced lock ups while playing since the 310.70 patch. Reverting solved it for me.
Have fun out there..
Happy Hunting all!

Hello!

I found subsim couple years ago and i kinda sneaked in... Maybe it's time to introduce my self. :|\\ I'm Joni, 29 years old lad from Finland. I live in an old (but modernized) log house with my wife and to cats. Work for living. In a powdercoating facility, which is nice. I have many hobbies and too little time, so I have these "seasons". At one week or month I might (or have to) spend all available freetime with repairing house, car or quadbike, or I might get an idea for a song and start to record it. Or start new electronics project or scalemodel. Or 3d model (just early learning). or play COD. Or command a virtual airplane or submarine. Or maybe spend some time with my better half...

I easily get inspired and get carried away...:88) But some hobbies are closer to my heart than others. Music and electronics, computers and reading. I've been a ww2 submarine buff more or less about three years, I've read many books both fact and fiction and have small, but slowly growing library. Next book I would like to find and read is Herbert A. Werner's Iron Coffins. Last ones I've finished were Edward L. Beach's Dust On the Sea and Lawrence Paterson's U-boat war patrol: the hidden diary of U-564.

Only subgame I play is sh5 and I NEVER played sh3! So maybe there is a reason why I like it so much, I don't know better! But i played sh4 quite a lot, unmodded though.

:stare: Must say I'm glad sh5 was so bad at the beginning. If it would have been playable, I would have never found Subsim! :salute:

Definitely true. An U-boat captain was even court martialed and sentenced to death for his anti-nazi feelings. His name was Oskar-Heinz Kusch (http://uboat.net/men/kusch.htm), may he rest in peace.

Since when I knwew about him, he became my Silent Hunter alter ego. :)

Hey, I know .I was feeling the love for a minute. All this excitement waiting for admin to enable my downloads is making me call everyone Nazi's.My poor cat is now a "Nazi Feline ". The noisy tenants upstairs "Nazi's" the landlord not doing anything about it "Nazi". The White Breasted Nuthatch chasing away the Chickadee, "Nazi".
How long usually for admin to press go? I sent an email with all pertinent info. Thank you for taking the time to respond?

Yes, I think quite many of them had no political passions in that direction. It can be seen also on the emblems: there were just a few with Nazi symbols. I read this story where one of the most famous and succesful U-boat aces, Reinhard "Teddy" Suhren was very uppset when he saw these (david's) stars weared by some and asked what it was for. Later in the bar (or where ever) two SS men came to ask if he could give them his autograph (he was famous already), but he told them to piss off.

He was difficult for his superiors (on many ways), but he was also very succesful and liked among hes crew. He had achieved knight's cross of the iron cross with oak leaves and swords by september 1942. :yep:

often if you where very successful they would let the little stuff pass even the occasional big item (as long as you weren't out right having an out right fatalist or anti-party attitude). the SS at the time could have beaten the S*&% out of him all because he told them to "piss off" but he was famous. the more unsuccessful you where the closer you where watched plain and simple. if you didn't follow orders but got alot of tonnage they would let it slide for the most part, the mission after all to sink as much tonnage as possible to strangle Brittan's supplies.

Hello everybody! I am now pretty old and retired, but have been playing subsims a lot. I am living in Sweden, but have been working a lot in Germany, so I do run the subsims in german if possible.

I did start during "the older stoneage" with a primitive DOS-game called Gato. Then came Silent Hunter I and Microsoft´s "Aces of the Deep". The Aces I did play a lot.

Then came SH2, but I was disappointed. You did get a mission, for example to catch a convoy at a certain position. If you made any detour on the way out, then you did miss the convoy and the whole Atlantic was empty. This was the single convoy in the game. I did not play it much.

Then came SH3! This is a wonderfull game, especially with the Grey Wolves Expansion. I did play many hours and did get many advices in this forum.

Next came SH4. For some reason I did never feel at home in the game, and did not play it very much.

In 2010 I did buy SH5 and started to play, but other occupations came in between, so it was very few hours spent on the game. Now I have just returned to the game again, and is starting up to learn all the functions in it. Of course I will also use the information on this forum.

I came back to SH5 after some time (several months) just to discover you can't download mods as you want.
It puts a daily limit now (I don't remember it was the case before or was it?).

but I understand. All the amazing work here needs to be supported.
And this is an amazing work. One of the best modding communities ever.

Anyway, it's good to be back.

Hi All

I discover a great community here since my last bought SH5 game who was priced 6,97 Euros at Get games web site.

First of all I wish thanks all the modders for their great work.

Why I'm becoming a Subsim member (donator) ? Simply because I was searching mods to improve SH5 gameplay and Subsim is the site don't to be ignored.

Sorry for my poor english but I'm trying to improve it.

Now about me : I'm retired now, 59 years old and love to play simulation games who relax me and who show me how to do something. FSX for flying, Railworks for the trains, ETS2 for the trucks, GTR and Race07 for race cars. No war game (only tested Medal of Honor a few times), no FP shooter, and no fictitious genre game... Only games with I can learn something wich I could'nt learn in real life cause the price asked for the lessons.

I like to go by bicycle, walk in forest, disposition quiet and polite and a few reserved.

I love my cat (also my wife :03:) who is a Russian-Blue type.

I never voyaged in US or UK or in any english language countries but that's the only stranger language I understand well enough (only to read).

But since I watched the Stoianm videos tutorials ( Thanks to him) now it seems I understand well the english speaking language

About musics the hard rock don't feel me; I prefer the pop, the danse, the classic, the old jazz like Glenn Miller and so on... and especially boogy woogy :smug:

I hope to find some help by your community if any
