Hi all,

I LOVED and still carry fond memories of playing Silent Service on my NES. After many years of unsuccessfully trying to fill a Silent Service "shaped" hole in my gaming life (most recently with Battlestations Midway & Pacific, which were fun but so, so "arcade-y" and shallow) I finally converted to pc gaming; discovering the Silent Hunter series only last year (due to stumbling upon of this very website looking for Sub games) is actually why I decided to save and get a gaming rig. I'm really enjoying SH4 & parts of 5-though I see now why mods for SH are so popular as 5 especially is just... dreadful at times.

P.S. I fully recognize the irony of a former grunt (i.e. Army) being more interested in Submarine (i.e. Navy) sims than say the latest modern military shooter!:arrgh!:

Ahoy,

After spending about 400 hours with SHIII and SHIV, I decided to try out SHV. I've heard many people say that it can't measure up to it's two prequels, but I've also heard it could be a nice experience with the addition of some mods. Eventually, the thought of me actually walking around in a u-boat got too persuasive.

So, here I am now so far enjoying the experience, mostly due to great graphics. I have added TDW UI, an interior mod and BARF, and they are all amazing work. Hats off to the authors. However, I could use a few tips on how to proceed, and which mods to add next and further increase the enjoyment. Any replies would be very welcome.

Sincerely

Hi!

I am Rubén from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I started sub-sim playing with "Aces of the Deep" (long, long time ago) and then, "Silent Hunter III" + GWX + SH3 Commander... http://www.silenthuntermods.com/forum/Smileys/extended/rockon.gif
Now, I want to start a new campaign with SH5 now, trying the latest mods.

Well I guess I am kinda new in that I have been away for quite awhile. Finally got a machine that could handle SH5 and then just waited for the Gods to sort out the mods.

Still love SH3 and still have it on my old machine that I fire up occasionally, but now that my SH 5 cd has arrived I guess that will be it for awhile.

Off now to go through all the Read Me posts before I start sorting out all the mods and asking questions.

Hmm, so re-entering the world of SH5 mean re-introducing i guess?

Never a hardcore sim-game lover myself, just love the idea of submarine hunting silently, which makes the SH series keep returning to my mind even after stop playing for over a year.
Let's hope this time I could at least finish the whole cam? But first need to redownload all those mod...due to the download limit it will takes some days i guess...

Ahoi,
I have had Silent Hunter versions, II and III in my pc collection for a few years now and also have just bought Silent Hunter V but rarely played them due to having problem playing them on my laptop. I am now please to say I have up graded my pc and am now ready to set sail. I planning to down load some mods to enhance my game play. I would appreciate any recommended mods advice on how to successfully down load them for use. Having watch a number of "Let's play" on you-tube am I envious.
I have successfully down loaded the commander mod, but I am having little success in downloading the GWX and running it.
Any pointers and guides in the right direction would be grateful.

Hello all , I am a silent hunter nut. I have played 3, 4, and 5.
And I would like to thank all the Modeler's and also all the informational
post that have helped my in my SH career.:salute:

I do not post as much as the forums may like maybe I feel my 2 cents
is just that and it is better for me to just keep it to myself.
I know this is my hang up. And we all have some things we would like to change if we had the will.

After an illness in Oct. 2010 that changed the way I though about gaming in general, I lost a lot of interest in playing games, when real life hits you in the face with a life or death illness gaming takes a back seat. For the ppl that want to know what happened Ill try my best to keep this short and none technical. A massive PE with lots of complications. And one open lung surgery to try and fix the problems but did not.

So now on to reason I am posting I think this is the best place for Sub gamers like us to hang out and get info and mods that make the silent hunter games better then when released. Yes Goggle is our friend, but I always end up back here. So with a sincere Thank You I have made a donation to say this with support for this wonderful web site and all who make it that way. :ping: I cant wait to down load the Bonus Mods and get my SH5 back in action, not sure how long it takes to get access?

Hope this is ok to post this here and if not I am sorry.

Well, I am not overly new, I joined in 2012 when I reinstalled my old SH3 game to grab some mods. Never posted anything in the forums. I just purchased SH5 gold edition for 6 bucks, now back looking for mods.

So far I do enjoy SH5 over SH3, but with the new, more realistic TDC, it is much harder to get the hit. I remember SH3 having a setting where you could just lock your target, pick your spot on the boat and fire.

Mind you this is not for me, I am going to be getting the mods for the realistic TDC system but my boy loves subs since our trip to the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI and he was able to board the USS Cobia. I want to Nerf the game a little and make it easier for him to play. Anyone have any suggests for Mods for my little bubblehead and for me?

Welcome to SUBSIM SPlantz : )

One thing I have always liked about the Silent Hunter Series is the amount of options available through mods or the user options in game. You can nerf it up with the latter, and the Game Fixes Only Mod is a great one as it fixes many of the issues with the stock game.

SPlantz
04-06-14, 09:13 PM
I tried the user options and took the realism almost down to zero, he can handle the first mission fine, the ships are not moving. But a moving target he can't seem to hit, and he is really frustrated. I'm still at work, collecting mods to try for him when I get home tonight. I don't want to make it too easy, no God mod, just something that will input all of the correct TDC data and let him place his shot with the periscope.

Decided to get this version of the SH series after who knows how long it being out. Waiting for it to finish download as I type.

I'm 48 years old and started out on the first SH and followed the series along the way. I live in Pennsylvania, part of the US of A and am waiting to see how this turns out. Bought it off the steam site and will see how well it works out for me.

SH3 was my favorite, especially after the Grey Wolves mod made it what it should have been on release. I dabbled with SH4 but the mod community didn't seem interested in working with that. So, I'm going to try my hand at SH5, even though I've heard some pretty bad stories about it.

Will look through the mods and see which ones are interesting to me. I play for fun and eye-candy. I salute those that want to plot their torps but that isn't my cup of tea, or Mt. Dew, depending on your beverage of choice. If anyone has a suggestion on mods for those that like great graphics and better immersion point them out, and thanks for your time.

Hey yall, I'm 26 years old from Georgia. Love a good sailing sim, which has lead me back to this web page once again.

I havn't played Silent hunter games in ages. Ive always been quite the newb at them, but i just love sailing around and looking at the virtual ocean, with the occasional engagement. As you might be able to tell i seem to run out of fuel a lot. I played SH3 GWX for a good 6 months, and own SH3 SH4, and SH5. I remember playing the first silent hunter as a child. I never did figure out how to get torpedos to hit their targets, but that doesnt really matter I still had fun.

That being said, though i have not had to click it yet, i am really hoping this "call for ressuply" order from my radioman works. Could save me alot of trouble!

Hi,

I'm 26 and live in Germany, I've been a fan of subsim since I was a little child when I watched my brother play Aces of the Deep and Sea Wolf. I come back to Silent Hunter every few years and I am just on another descend into the deep. After years of SH III I just bought SH IV and V in one package and try to find a mod package that's working for me.

Just acquired SH5 and a bit disappointed with it.Not at all like SH3 which is really good for moving around the map.One thing stands out at the moment is the persistent voice over "We are in shallow water Captain" can it be killed off anyways.I am struggling with the game play a little, but guess i will sort it...By the way I am a 76yo male ex merchant seaman and now living in New Zealand..

My name is Paul and after a couple years hiatus, I'm back to indulge some more cabin fever Sub Simming. SH3 was my first purchase in around 2007 and my clanmates and I played SH4 on Himachi for years. SH5 was luckily saved by the modding community. But, I still have had a hard time adjusting to what even now seems to be a buggy and clumsy set up.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the modders over the years and all they have developed. I truly enjoy SH with the most realistic settings possible in a Sim.

It occurred to me the other day that with all the mod developers in this community, it seems the knowledge and talent is there to actually create a completely original Sim, with all of their know how and appreciation in what players want, and most definitely dislike, combined to make the best PC Uboat sim ever.

Thanks again.

Ahoy,

I am Tim, 21 years old and from Germany and I study history.
I am all about history from the Greeks and Romans to the Napoleonic era and of course World War I and II.
Since my family comes from Kiel I always had an interested in naval things, I first got into the U-Boot theme
by books a read a bunch of books about Topp and Prien and later on about other general stuff data etc.,
but I also know a thing or two about land and air warfare.

I played SH3, 4 and 5 and while I enjoy them all I think that mod's are necessary to play 5,
If I just look at the normal map and see Deutche Bucht (Deutsche Bucht in German) I could cry
every time and that is of course only one minor bug, one of many many bugs.

Well, there we go, that's basically me.

I can't speak regarding Nexus and many other sites for that matter. All I can say is SUBSIM is much more than a place to collect mods, and get help with your game.

Spend a bit of time here and you should come to realize that. By the way, for what I have donated to SUBSIM over the years, I have gotten it back x 100.

Hello everyone!

My name is Thomas. Recently I've played semi-simulation online games like World of Tanks and War Thunder. They are great arcade games, but I feel I need more simulation aspects from these types of games. So I remembered there are awesome submarine simulation games!

I've decided to try the newest SH5 game, but after watching couple of streams I saw it desperately needs mods to be a decent game. So that's how I got here. :)

I have yet to navigate the waters of SubSim community as I'm totaly new here. :Kaleun_Binocular:

I'm Werner, 26 years old, from Johannesburg, South Africa.. I'm very interested in history, philosophy, and mechanics. I used to work as an aircraft mechanic, but my need for massive machines and the occasional industrial accident is now fully reliant on the Silent Hunter games. Heh. :smug:

I've been hooked on the Silent Hunter series since the first game, but SH3 is the all time favorite (come on SH5, you can beat it!).

Music wise I play the guitar, and like a lot of different music...from Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Nirvana, Silver Chair, Björk etc.

I've recently started getting into modding various games, so hopefully there will be something to try improving in SH5.

I just signed up as well. I recently bought SH III, IV and V on Steam and am really enjoying them! I haven't had this much fun playing a game in years. I've installed the GWX mod with SH3, and the RFB and RSRD mods on SHIV.

Still trying to wrap my head around which ones to do for SH V as I think the game (especially with its graphics and ability to walk around the sub) has a ton of potential.

I'm also still trying to figure out what kind of career I want to begin as a newbie -- and in which game of the three, even. I really enjoy the war in the Pacific and the ability to play a Fleet Boat, but at the same time, Das Boot is one of my favorite movies of all time. So many choices!

I love that there's an entire community built around these simulations and I can't wait to dive deeper and learn more. :D

Few words about me; I am 24 years old and I am doing my BBA at Turku University of Applied Sciences, in degree programme of business logistics. (phew.. that really was a few words.. :hmmm:)

Today was the time to launch my u-boot again, but this time with the newest and shiniest Silent Hunter game available. SH5. And after one hour of diving, I was able to sink my first merchant after all these years. Yay! :woot:

Hi, I'm Adel, from Cairo, Egypt, 28 years old. I am a dentist now studying for masters degree in orthodontics. I've been playing sub sims (SH3) since 2007 and in 2009-2010-2011 I switched over to SH4+UBM. I am an avid simulator enthusiast, as I believe simulators mimic reality as much (therefore a realist).

Hope I'm not too new for this thread, I've been on these forums since (ehem..) and really like the concept of enriching simulators (I've made my own whiz wheel back in 2011).. I'm also a huge fan of flight simulators (my first MSFS1998). From the back of my head the games I played include Mig-29, Syndicate wars, red alert 2, GTA/2/3/4/5, and recently I stumbled upon dangerous waters and really trying hard to nail a target with TMA..

I liked this forum as most people here are like minded and have passion for sub simulators. I've also joined briefly the enigma flotilla and actually that was so cool in the sense of coding and decoding, learning the enigma machine (I'm planning on getting one of those DIY enigma kits).

All in all, from the few I know here is Dowly the finnish ferret (who if I'm not mistaken is also on Eagle Dynamics forums).

I'm also a huge travel fan. I plan at some later date to visit SF and see hands on the famous SS Pampanito (which I'm a huge fan).

I love fleet boats and even got some nice books from O'Kane and others.

Hi, my name is Markus. I'm 34 years old and I'm from Germany. I was at least 12 years in the german navy. First I travelled patrol speed boats, then i was sent to the u-boat-squadron, going on U-33 the last days. So even I'm no more a member of german navy, my interest is still in naval simulations.

My name is Eric LaVigne...alias Pigboat 39. (got that moniker from an excellent book about the early S Boats in the Philippines). I am 55,a bit long in the tooth for a computer gamer, but love real time war games. This is a throwback to my early beginnings as a board gamer. I have a great interest in history, especially military history, so games such as SH5 offer me a way to explore for myself the experiences of the "U-Bootwaffe". All of the men in my family were navy men, although I sought service in the army. My Grandfather, David James LaVigne served in the old China Asiatic Fleet on a cruiser. My other Grandfather, Lucien LaCrouix, served on a Patrol Craft in the Atlantic, and later off the coast of France. Alas he was killed during the great Granville Raid in March of 1945.

I live in Tennessee, and love horseback riding, hiking, camping, and reading fine novels or interesting histories. I also enjoy the Silent Hunter series, and the Total War series games with SH5 taking a first place.

I hope I haven't been too long winded. Please accept my humble greetings to all. :)

Pigboat39, welcome aboard. Although, at 55, you're a little bit young compared to some of us around here! A board gamer, too! Tactics II?

I still have an original copy of the game too. And thanks THEBERBSTER for the links. I have already checked a few of them out....very helpful. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

I guessed because it was the first wargame I ever played. (1962) An original Tactics II? Kewl! Can't match that, though I do have D-Day and AK.

Welcome to the boats! Good luck and good hunting.

Hi there

I have always been interested in anything seaworthy and am currently studying for my ICC (International Certificate of Competence).
I stumbled upon SH5 while searching for sea-sims. Shortly after I found this modding community and all the work you have put together.
I am still downloading mods and haven't even come close to try them all out.
But to this point I have to say, great work everyone
