Hello all, another newbie, my name is Derick and fairly new to SH. Have played SH 3 & 4 previously but not an expert and just purchased 5. Can't believe the work some people have put into this to make it the game it is. Much appreciated and have started adding mods already. Have lots of questions which need answering so bye for now while I find a place to get them answered.

So I live in the first state Delaware  I am also a reeactor for the 261st costal artillery in lewes been doing that for a yr now. First sub game I ever and still play is on nintendo called silent service. O yea I am 25 and have a lil girl who is my world and I hope you all can help me out on the bugs that come with games so I can fix them cuz I been reading somethings and it looks like there are bugs with the game before the mods came out.
Thanks,

Hi all,
My name is Soames. 45ish, from UK.
I've been lurking about these forums for such a long time now, but have until now, remained undetected.
Very long term Sub game fan, computer or otherwise.
From 70s board game, Up Periscope through to Silent Service on Spectrum, Red Storm Rising on Atari, 688 Attack Sub, and all iterations of Silent Hunter PC.
Why is being couped up inside a large metal cigar, with thousands of tons of pressure on all sides and the voilent jarring of depth charges exploding all around you whilst sneaking through convoys, computing geometric solutions to complex bearing, range and speed problems so interesting?

Hello everyone!
My name is Matthew, posting from New York City. I am a twenty year old Fordham University student, doubling in philosophy and history. Wargaming has always been a passion of mine (inherited from my father) and I proudly call myself a grognard. I only recently discovered the modern world of computer wargaming and have gotten into every one of the latest Paradox Interactive games and am eager to start up the Silent Hunter series. I dabbled a bit in SH4 but I found the Pacific theater dreadfully dull as I kept wishing that I was in the Atlantic, so here I am!

G'day all submariners, my name is Bob, from Australia. I'm mid 50's, an have been playing Sub sims for what seems a lifetime. I started with Sh1, 688, & Silent Steel, but really got interested when SH3 came out. SH4 followed, and finally SH5 which I prepurchased for $110 (Aussie Dollars, Collecters edition). Ouch!. Now avail for under $20. Within 2 weeks it would no longer work. So I went back to SH4. Currently I'm on my second runthrough of SH4, (strock) attempting manual targeting, and all options except map updates turned off. Once complete I want to try modding.

Hello gentlemen. My name is Zack, 22. I registered last year but my Windows died on me. Left with my Macbook I had no chance to touch Silent Hunter at all let alone learn anything for a LONG time until a couple of days ago I discovered Parallels. I'm currently running Silent Hunter IV on the Macbook.
I started off here, felt like I should do another introduction.
G'day to all you, gentlemen :)
P.S. I was wondering how can I get in touch with a forum administrator? There is a little matter which I seek help.

Hi there. I'm Ian, I'm 51 and I'm an alco - sorry, wrong thread :DL I live in England, close to Heathrow Airport, and I look after PCs for a living. My bruv and I have just got hold of SH5, having been playing SH3 and SH4 pretty well since they came out. Just getting the hang of SH5 by playing the intro scenario and heading out through the infamous (and veeeerrryyyyy looonnnnggg) Kiel Canal. Have to say SH5 looks good, even compared to SH4 which was a treat for the eyes, I reckon, but too early to tell how the gameplay goes. I hate the fact that they've redefined all the key commands - have to get used to them all over again - and the idea of having to walk (or run) to stations to man them is a real pain.

you need to dig into the workshop forum, there are already many many mods to make SH5 fit to your own taste, to modify the key commands I use this Mod .... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=168297
But there are another mod that need just to be enabled via JSGME to get the key commands similar to SH3

U-boat Story is a £5m attraction telling the story of World War II German submarine U-534. You will see into the cross-sectioned submarine and discover its amazing story through a highly interactive and exciting exhibition.

Hey everyone!
I'm from NC, 25 years old. I've heard a lot of good things about SH5 and decided to buy it yesterday. I got hooked watching J2JonJeremy's "Lets Play Silent Hunter 5" on youtube and just had to give the game a shot!
He talked so much about the community here at SubSim that I decided to become a member and give the mods a try! :yeah:
I look forward to becoming part of the community!

Ahoy everyone! (or should that be "Achtung!"?)
Thought I'd finally introduce myself instead of lurking.
I'm living in south Wales (the bit to the left of England), long time gamer of all sorts of games and started watching Let's Plays a few years back.
I first noticed the Silent Hunter series when JefMajor made a series on SH4 (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL51F4D1180295B304&feature=plcp) and really liked the idea of sub sim. Got the game and was hooked.
J2JonJeremy's SH5 series (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7ECFA8A658D96D8F&feature=plcp) (of which I noticed a thread, nice one J2!) rekindled my love of this series so finally bit the bullet (torpedo?) and got the game, despite the bad things I'd read, and here I am trawling through mods.
Turns out that the game (at least at 1.2, maybe with some modding) is not only playable but really really fun.
I'm off now to go make some posts.
See you around the boards!

I'm 16 and from Ireland. I picked up Silent Hunter 5 off Steam about a year ago, paddled in it for a bit, decided it still needed work and left it. I have a lot of time at the minute and discovered these forums and well, I hope to really get back into it as for a short time I did indeed love it.
Can't wait to see what the community has done with it!

Hello guys! Newbie here, I am in England and live near Thornaby where that pesky airbase is located.
I played SH3 years ago but for only a short time as I was busy with school. I really enjoyed it though, even though I am not really a sub fan (more fixed-wing modern-day fighters for me, like Falcon 4 BMS), the detail and accuracy of the simulation still hooked me.
I was vaguely aware of SH5's launch but initial reviews said it suxx so I passed on it. Unfortunately, I noticed it on sale for £5 so I thought to myself, "I'll give it a go, surely they've ironed out the bugs by now!" So now I have it, installed and patched to 1.2. Two missions later and I confirm I suck at this, so now I am doing some self study and watching stoianm's excellent tutorials.
Thanks for this great community and thanks for keeping SH alive!

Ahoy virtual submariners.
I am from Ontario, Canada near the US border. I have played SH3 in times past, but at the time I did not know of this great community and I probally would have played much more of it.
I recently SH5 after watching J2's LP, and wanted to check it out myself. I am having a blast now the game is all modded up. Thanks to those smarter than I who can make things I can not for free, for you made this game great. I feel Ubisoft needs to hire all the modders here, so they can actually come out with a playable game at launch....... now that I think about all game companies need to hire modders, as I do not think I own any games that havent been heavily modded. I digress though, just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks.

Good evening all.
I never knew subsim existed!
As a long time fan of Silent Hunter III I couldn't wait for SH4 to arrive.
It sucked. However I think a lot of this was down to the fact that my system was just on the parameters for running it. I gladly went back to SH3.
When I read that SH5 was coming out I was excited for the game and sad that I knew I wouldn't have a system good enough to run it.
It has only been this last week that I have finally got a computer powerful enough (way powerful infact) to run SH5 so I waded into eBay and bought myself a copy of my long awaited game.
Graphics? Blown away. Especially since my new computer can run evrything at max without issue.
Gameplay? Seems to take a little getting used to after SH III.
However I think I have a pretty raw game and I need a good few patches. For example, whin I dive after being up on deck I can still see my crew manning their stations on the deck if I look through the periscope while we are diving! Also my radio and sonar men seem unable to tell me anything at all. The frist I know of enemy ships is when they are in my binoculars.
I have looked at the glitches thread and I am a little disheartened to see it runs to over 80 pages. I haven't a clue where to look for patches and I am so late to this game I am sure I will need many of them.
To be honest I am wondering if it is all worth it and if I shouldn't just reload my beloved SH III onto my new computer and welcome back an old friend.
Or maybe I should just stick to World of Tanks...

Pozdrav, zemljace! :salute:
Greetings all,
I have never played SH before. Got interested after watching a 4 part series called Convoy. So picked up the game and thought I would give it a go. So far not so good. Mods? for Sub mostly? Watching some video on youtube. These must be mods there is so much more info on the HUD than I have or the original game. What are the favourites. Game material is so basic. How would you expect to go out to see after the first basic Tutorial. It teaches you nothing about targeting. And suggestions and or direction in training would be greatly appreciated. The game looks awesome and I would really like to enjoy it. Thanks in advance.

Greetings fellow submariners!
I just purchased SH5, and have spent alot of time trying to learn the game, here in the forums.
I took notice of this post, and thought I'd follow protocol and report for duty.
My name is Glenn, and I'm a 30 y/o guy from Oslo, Norway.
I make my living writing for television, with a pronounced goal of using that experience, and get into the gaming industry.
Gaming has been my passion all my life, and simulators and strategy games has always been the "drug of choice".
As far as Silent Hunter goes, I am just a cadet.
I have a little experience from playing Silent Hunter 2 back in the days. But this is too long ago to really benefit my crew to any extent.
The sub sim I spent the most time with, and indeed it was my 1st time commanding a sub, was the game "Wolfpack" for ms-dos.
Anyone else remember this game?
Here you could choos wether to be sub or ship, hunter or hunted.
Good times.
I also played the 688 Hunter/Killer, but as far as i remeber this was not as entertaining. Probably too much sim, too little arcade for me at the time.
That was my previous experience.
Now over to SH5.
Great game, I must say. After all those negative posts on the(predominately the steam) forum, I've postponed buying the SH games.
I've been looking at SH3 for a long time, wondering wether or not to invest the time to learn it (the money is not an issue at 9 bucks).
But i came to the conclusion, that both 4 and 5 looked so amazingly much better, that I just couldn't ignore the graphic aspect.
I've played for a couple of days now. About to finish my 1st real mission. The sinking of 100,000 tons on the west approach.
(I sorta regret not choosing the 50,000 tonnes on east coast of britain instead, but hey.)
And last night I had one of my greatest and most intense gaming moment in a long time.
As I said i was on the "British Supplies" mission, and I' ve just jused all my torps, and have to head back to port for supplies.
Now, usually I choose to go around the north of Scotland, rather than having to cross the english channel. Although sometimes I sneak through the channel.
This is going fairly well, as i alternate between surface and submerged depending on threat levels. Enemy activity wasnæt so bad apparently, I thought to myself.
Then late at night, I spot a lonely freighter a couple of clicks north-east of Dover-Calais straight.
I almost never waste torps on these lonely ships, so I surface and sink him with the gun.
Now while I am about to give him the last few round to sink him, I hear for my first time in sh5, the sound of incoming cannonfire. I cant even see from where, I just hear them whizzing by.
I make a quick decision. "If I cant see him, he can't see me". So i fired the last 3 or 4 shots at the freighter, so it was sinking, and hurried down the hatch. Now I can see my enemy, an English destroyer.
I dived as far as the sea would let me. All of 32 meters... went silent and slowly crept away while shells were raining on the surface.
At this stage it was getting pretty tense and time compressing was out of the question.
So I cept on creeping along the sea bed at a whopping 1kts for a little while, before I realized I might just be screwed on this one.
My sound guy reports 3 more destoyers heading to join the hunt.
As they pack up, I can see that they havent found me, and are circling the wrong area. Just a few hundred meters to my south.
Very pleased, and still very nervous, I continue my stealthy voyage by hiding in the wake of a convoy, finally after, literally hours, I came out the other side. Unscathed.
I looked at the time, and it was way too late. I think I spent maybe 2 1/2 hours getting through the Dover Straights.
And all because of my lust for a little tonnage. My difficulty is at 25%, which I thought was ok for a total newbie.
I play with limited ammo, fuel, batteries, oxygen, Co2, and all that.
But torping, navigation, listening and such is still a bit above my level.
From this experience, I'm sold.
This is a fantastic game. And I haven't even started with the mods yet.
See y'all! Have fun.

Look at bottom of post #1 of the thread I gave you a link to. There is a link to the patcher app that allows you to enable patches via mouse clicks. Couldn't be easier.

Hello DarkWraith, I appreciate your patience on this. I have downloaded the patcher (I think that is the one I need). I am not savy on this type of thing.
I then looked at this thread for help as I only see a white window when I open
the patcher.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the game. As soon as you've got the hang of things, check out the mods. The biggest complaint about SH5 was that is was not up to scratch on release. But now after the great work of many modders, the game is something else. It's one of the few games where you can admire a beautiful sunset whilst blowing things up:D
Good hunting!

Hi everybody.
I am from Copenhagen in Denmark.
I have enjoyed the forum for a long time, but have not added very many replies to threads until now. But lately I have found several threads so interesting, that I have started commenting and therefore I find it natural to say a few words about my self here.
I have played the complete list of Silent Hunter, meaning SH 1-2-3-4-5. I started playing SH1, when it was new and just released. So many years have passed and I am still using a lot of time in conningtowers :DL.
When I started playing SH5, I was supprised to find it so clumpsy and with a totally stupid UI. Therefore I am very impressed and find it fantastic, that the modders in this forum have been able to change it into this fabulous and exiting game, that we play today. Thanks to you all.

Hi all, John here, or Slap if you prefer. Just bought SH5 and am going to play it through in real time all the way :) I thought it would be nice to have something I can leave running and occasionally tinker with when there are some nice targets to shoot at! I also thought it would be nice to play something that requires a bit of thought and skill so I am going to play it on the most realistic settings I can, have added a few mods pretty successfully but so far I'm having a bit of a job trying to work out my position on the map! Will add a new thread to ask for help :p

Hello everybody
I bought SH5 about 4 weeks ago and have been lurking around in the forums ever since and thought it would be a good time to say gidday.
I have downloaded a lot of great mods and play the game on 94% realistic (just external view and event camera) and so far only sunk 1 freighter with the deck gun, manual targeting can be quite a hard task, but I do like a challenge, lol.
Lastly I would like to thank all responsible for all the fantastic mods available, you guys rock.

i've been a big sim fan for years but it's been forever since i got into a sub sim. i haven't played one, frankly, since silent service on the NES many many moons ago, which i played incessantly when i was a pup.
i just picked up SH5 last week and i'm really enjoying it, as well as the community here. simmers are a certain breed. i've been playing Falcon from 3.0 through the modern FreeFalcons, and the similarities in the two communities are undeniable.
thanks, modders, for all the great work you've done with this game, and thanks everyone for being friendly, helpful, and free with your knowledge. knowledge is power!

Hello all. My name is Dave, I am 48 yrs old and from South Florida. I have been playing various Sub Simulators since way back when. Hi, I used to play Aces of the Deep, then SH1. Skipped the "Pacific" SHs as they were of no interest, have not been on the forum since August 2009.
I'm 61 and live in Australia.
I bought SH5 last year but have just figured out how to get it to run. I live in a rural area with satellite internet - very slow - and the game did not like it. I finally got it working last week.
I am looking forward to SH6.
SH5 has some good features but is backwards in lots of others. Thank the Lord for our modding community which looks like it is trying to make the game better.
Hey, Uncle Neal, any chance of using your contacts to get someone to computerise the old Avalon Hill boardgame SUBMARINE? I still think that is the most fun I have ever had underwater.

Sailorman Eschem Schnuz returning to duty.
Had previously completed campaigns in SH3 and SH4 (Operation Monsun only), and had originally intended to complete a campaign using the GWX3 mod for SH3 that i heard so much about.
And then something happened. I got bored.
Purely down to me - I get bored easily. But i was also tempted to re-try SH5 again (SH5 was actually the first one that i actually tried to play - long, extremely unpleasant story, that). I was intrigued by the FPS-like gameplay, but was put off by numerous comments about bugs and problems and overly high hardware requirements.
Having bought a new laptop last year, i took the plunge again this past weekend.
I am currently on my first mission, and hope to share my impressions of this installment of the SH series as i go along.
Carry on.

Getting bored happens to the best of us:) In-game Time Compression (TC) is your friend! As are all the WONDERFUL Mods that people have created for this game. As of now, out of all my gaming experiences, mods included, this game has become my favorite sim of all time.
I took a long break from it due to RL, etc.. Came back and enjoy it even more:D I'm not what you'd call a hardcore simmer. I'm more of a 'survey-simmer' i.e. 'middle-ground'. However, I've learned so much that I'm having a blast tracking convoys and stuff. Currently I'm figuring out My perfect 'Mod-Soup'.
Not sure on your/others familiarity of mods and gameplay for this, so might I suggest just a couple mods and tips to get you started...
Interface Mods--TDW's Multiple UIs Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166093) (Not exact name)-- The UI for me was the biggest issue. I didn't know where to start. With a good UI/Hud, I don't have to remember all the hotkeys;) Personally I use the SH5 Enhanced portion of this mod. ~It comes with all the different SH versions of UI types.
Environment Mods--Real Environment v3 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166178)-- It's gorgeous. Just installed 3, but had 2 through most of my campaign. There are many great Environment mods out there, so check'em out.
--Mighty Fine Crew Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=163591)-- More Crew with variations in skins and actions. Brings more life to the U-Boot. Other crew mods as well.
Mission/Campaign Mods--I currently don't have any, but will be getting some soon.
Patch Mods--Some patches modder-made, not included in the 1.2 game patch.
If you're new(although you've played the others) I quite enjoyed J2JonJeremy's Let's Play (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7ECFA8A658D96D8F&feature=plcp) videos:) He started the videos w/o any knowledge of the game. They're funny and informative. It also made me check out mods, since I had tried to play SHV w/o them.
Good Tutorials for whomever needs them by Stoianm (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=181538).
There are so many Mods that add playability to this game, it's ridiculous, lol.
Just make sure that your game's patched up first to 1.2 and some modder patches and get the JSGME (http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/674497-JSGME-Generic-Mod-Enabler-Forums) (may be a newer version) mod installer for your mods.
Mods here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=249), here (http://www.silenthuntermods.com/forum/index.php?board=41.0) and here (http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/mods/silenthunter5/mod.html).

Hello to all!
Excuse for a relatively dumb question:
Is crew controls (example: identify ship, turn on/off TDC)
available only after modding the game? I ask, because i try
very first time to control any of submarine simulations, no
previous expirience at all of those type of games.

Hello to all!
Excuse for a relatively dumb question:
Is crew controls (example: identify ship, turn on/off TDC)
available only after modding the game? I ask, because i try
very first time to control any of submarine simulations, no
previous expirience at all of those type of games.
In my RUS version of game (1.1.5) i cant find (turn on)
this options.
And sorry if its a wrong place to ask about it... :-?
No worries. From Periscopes and/or UZO just hit spacebar to lock target on/off. Then click TDC on/off:) Hope that helps.
You can also check this link for tutorials (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=181538) :D

Not sure on your/others familiarity of mods and gameplay for this, so might I suggest just a couple mods and tips to get you started...
.....
Welcome Aboard Sailorman Eschem Schnuz! :salute:
P.S. Apologies for the long-windedness. The community here is great, so never feel bad about asking any questions:)
Thanks for responding.
I'm very familiar with TC. Like I said, I've already completed campaigns in SH3 and SH4.
It's the bits in between the TC that I grew tired with, and that's why I decided to give SH5 another try.
I'm already underway on my first patrol under factory settings, so that's what i'll be sticking with for now. But much thanks for the links.

So ive had this sim for two days and I just want to say thanks to everyone on here for the huge amount of tutorials, instructions, mods, and help. This is truly a gaming community unlike many others. Its hard to find people so open and friendly to new members s opposed to impatient raging nerds.
I was able to instal the game from steam, play the vanilla tutorial, install a recomended mod set and nearly complete a patrol all in about 2 days. This would be unheard of in other sim or mod communtites. I love the game, thanks guys!!
Im on my phone, excuse the crappy english. :)

Thank god for the Modders . anyway, Im 45 yrs old and use to live in Salt lake, now live in Idaho. I build computers and love Heavy metal !!!!!!. I don't talk much, but I do appreciate all the hard work the various Modders have put in to make the SH series the best Damn Experience possible.

Hi!
I've been playing subsims since Silent Service II, and I am a big fan of SHIV+full mods.
I have a question for you all, it's been a long time since I played SHIV and I although I bought SHV, I never played much (I wanted to wait until the sim was fixed enough).
What is the state of SHV? I would like to play the german side and attack Scapa Flow!!!
Besides from patching the sim etc, is there any partial or full mod that I should be aware of? I used to crave for realism, but... I no longer have the time to study and practice... I plan to set some of the difficult stuff on automatic, so I would prefer historical campaign accuracy and visuals over getting all the gaugues right.
So, should I get mods or it will be just fine with a patched game?
Many thanks!!!

Guten Tag mein name ist Josh.
I live in Adelaide Australia and im 14 years old (probably the youngest member on here). I am currently part of the AAFC and im in year nine. My first sub sim was probably Sub Battle sim on my dads old mac. I like all sim genres and i am one the only 5 sim players at my school. When im older i hope to get a maritime surveillance in the P-3 Orion with the RAAF.
My first silent hunter game was no.4 which i picked up for $2.

Hello , Iam René from the netherlands , iam 30 years young.
i have never played a sub ( sim ) game before , yesterday
i watched a few youtube vids and came across silent hunter 5
wich looked nice blowing stuff up and on the water and all looked
well.. relaxing i guess lol , anyways i have purchased the game on
steam for about 15 euro's wich is about 19 dollars i believe , wich i
found to be a nice deal.
Anyways i have not played the game much yet since i am having some
trouble getting it to run properly it should run good on my system though
here are my specs just in case someone can give me some tips / advice
about this , the issue is mainly stutter at the moment ive put in the
anti lag and limited the fps to 45 since before it was going all over the place
like it could be 60 and with a explosion poof 30 or something and in general
it was going up and down to much as well , so i have limited the fps
wich seemed to help and disabled the render ahead feature , it was originaly
on 2 i have set it to zero , but i think the reason of the stutter is mainly of
not all due to mouse lag.
here are my specs :
FX 6100 ( oc .4.1 ) - wich is automated from the motherboard.
mobo : Sabertooth 990 FX
memory 8 GB
Graphic card : HD 6870 1 GB ( i believe xfx , it has dual fans )
power supply : ocz 600 Watt
and i use a Razor Deathadder 3.5 G as a mouse ( not sure if thats important but since i can change the dpi level it might be , for the mouse lag problem )
Right , so i got the game running more or less though i think it could do better , i am totally new to the silent hunter series but the little parts
i have seen i liked ( eventhough iam such a huge noob that it took me 10 minuts to figure out how to maximize the map , yup thats right lol , epic facepalm )
iam goign to dive more into the game today and i want / will install mods
at some point but i want to make it stable performance wise first , though if
there are mods out there that will assist with the performance please let me know , ofc i will look for myselfs also but a look into the right direction is appriciated.. so yeah iam probably the biggest noobie captain out there
lol but will learn as we go i guess :)
Thanks for reading my post and for any reply you might give to it..
/salute.

Good morning everybody from Fokko W. living in the Netherlands. 57 years young :D . A few days ago I bought SH 5. Have some, not much, experience playing with SH 3. Never played SH 4.
I really miss a good manual, not included with the DVD. Hope to learn a lot here and download the good stuff.

Based on my installation of SH5 from the DVD disk, If you go;
Start/All programs/Ubisoft/Silent Hunter 5,
in the list which opens you'll find a .pdf file entitled "Manual". You can form your own opinion as to how good it is.
Hope this helps, Fokko W, and a big welcome to SubSim and SH 5.
Hey there, I'm a bit of an on and off subsim fan, I've played SH3 and 4, and at one time in the past I had another username here (forgot the username, password, e-mail, etc...).
Thing is, I'm gamer that plays almost all the genres out there, but once in a while, SH series just grabs me by the nuts and sucks away all my free time (not just the game, re-watching Das Boot, checking u-boat stories, u-boat models, etc).
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is: hi, my name is Filipe, I'm from Portugal and I'm a subholic. :P

Hello all.
I have browsed these forums for some time and just got back into my sub games now that I have more time to play. I would like to thank the members for all the great info and mods I have used over the years. This is one of the best game communities I have ever seen. Informative & friendly advise and chatter is what any great community needs and you have it.
God's speed & good hunting

Hi there subsim fans. I'm a big fan of SH3 and 5 (the two ive played) and even more a fan of the subsim modders community. Modders are like modern day Jesus' in that they answer our prayers, enable lame games to walk, nay run along at the speed of their true potential. Google pointed me towards this place and ive been very happy about it ever since. Most intelligent PC based gaming communities are great, but the subsim hub is a shining example of how good things can be when people cooperate with each other.. I'm rambling..

Hi all, it's great to be here. Not much real sub xp but I know the English river and canal network reasonably well.

Played SH3 for quite a while, gave up when my old PC had so many updates on it that I used to have to power it up, and go and eat the evening meal while it got booted up. It realy used to struggle with the graphics, especially when a lot going on in a convoy scenario.
When I got my new W7 laptop dismayed to find couldn't play SH3 on it, at least I never managed to get it to work, so now I'm here with SH5.
Still playing the unmodified game, ie only official patch done, on second war patrol, and I really really hope Ubisoft's ears are burning with the acid comments I'm muttering about how they've released this game in the state it is.
Will have to have trawl through the patches and mods to get it something like it should be.
SH Online. I should cocoa, no chance.
I hope that seeing as my sub is U-35 this isn't an omen, as the real U-35 was a jinxed boat and didn't last beyond Nov '39.

I have been following this site from way back in the day, but rarely post. Too damn busy trying to read all the great gaming experiences and advice, not to mention the great mod downloads for SH3 and SH4. Now taking a new look at SH5. Thanks to all of the great modders here, SH5 is no longer a bad experience, but now a brand new SIM in the tradition of its predecessors going all the way back to the original silent service and up periscope pioneer games.

Hi All,
My name is Tony, I'm 42, live in Perth, Western Australia. I've been into naval sims since playing Silent Service on the Commodore 64 30 odd years ago.
When not working for one of the larger security companies in Australia I tend to play a lot of games, (some MMO's, Total War (et al) and SH3-5, tho I seem to spend most of my time in 5, graphics are prettier I guess), play with my 3 daughters or, most often, build model kits, mainly 1/350 naval and 1/35 military kits.
Thanks to all of you who have helped me so far (tbh I couldn't name you all, I've been lurking for 3-4 months learning the ropes of the game, and the dynamics of the group), it's nice to find such a friendly crowd :)
Tones.

Looking forward to this title. This is my first time with the SH series, but I played Janes 688i about a decade or more in the past.
I am a navy vet - served on the Enterprise in the mid-80s, and got into naval sims with Larry Bond's Harpoon... yes, the one with cardboard counters. We once had a game that took up the entire weapons elevator area with land masses (part of the GIUK Gap) marked of with electrical tape.
