Okay, forget I said anything.

I will memorize what you said and remember it for the rest of my life! :O:

Medics can heal injured players and build a MASH. Plenty of use for that role.

I saw that on the wikis and was always thinking of bringing an ambulance along with the convoy for that purpose, but with everyone able to reanimate their teammates is there a practical use for a MASH?

I will memorize what you said and remember it for the rest of my life! :O:

Damn straight. And just in case I'll put it on my stream.

Oh yes, players can just be injured, shot in the arm makes aiming hard or shot
in the leg makes you not able to walk, so if we are in a fixed position, MASH a bit
to the rear would be helpful in case the medic is busy with something else or dead.

Twitch and XSplit have had a communication problem over the past few days, resulting in some wonky stuff. They say it should be resolved now, so I'll try streaming again today. However, I have been deleting the videos after a few days. I have found that Twitch also shuts off the stream on their end when they feel that you are taking up too much space. So, I am now trying to take the stuff I want to save and putting it on Youtube.

As for ArmA, I'll start bringing an ambulance along then. See if I can be more useful as the new Lifeline.

BLUFOR/Chernarus is up.

Also, I switched the artillery observers off for main targets.

Oberon

First off, thank you Tak, I tend not to lead because I fear screwing up and getting everyone brutally murdered, and I find I tend to work better in a support role, but I can try leading sometime and see how it goes. :D

In regards to necromancy on fellow soldiers, I was also guilty of that, although admittedly when the artillery started falling it was our proximity to each other that was our downfall, but equally if we spread out then communication and direction becomes a problem.
I am quite happy to leave the reviving to someone else, although I recommend that the medic take quite a few smoke grenades with them because corpses are usually a hot zone. If we were running ACE then the medic would have a much enhanced role, but that's an aside really.

Communication was definitely our downside last night, no-one was talking until Raptor took command and by then we had already put ourselves in a corner.

In regards to the strafing runs that the AI did, I would put money on that being Zeus in operation, and therefore come BLUEFOR in Chernarus, we will be getting attacked by Hinds and Frogfoots, just as we were by Cobras and A10s, so it would pay to have a plan to deal with them. Perhaps a dedicated MANPAD operator, although when the MANPAD fires you'd best evac the area around him because if he misses then the area he is in is going to be on the receiving end of a strafing run as soon as that aircraft turns around.

Of course, the best bet is to get someone in first on light operations, two people perhaps, Dowly would be a good candidate, he specialises in stealth operations, and perhaps Hottentot if he is online at the time, or Takeda if he is not. The rest of the team would be setting up the MHQ at this point and stearing WELL clear of the town until either the town goes active or the tower is knocked down. If the town does go active then the rest of the team should focus fire on the side of the town the furthest away from the tower to encourage enemy forces to move away from where Dowly/Takeda are approaching.
Obviously in later missions where we have LGBs then the first operation becomes a lot easier since all the FO has to do is lase the tower rather than get in close and run the risk of being detected.

Of course, the best laid plans go to hell as soon as the first shot is fired, but I think if every one of us has a clearly defined role before we go into battle then we'll have a better idea of what to do, and I don't mean 'Engineer' or things like that, I mean like Schroeder will be on overwatch with his MG, Raptor on sniper distant, Hunter takes point, that kind of thing, and if we bring in armoured support then that makes things a little easier when it comes to disposing of enemy armoured contacts, but there's still the infantry to sweep and perhaps the occasional vehicle hiding in a house...

Ah, danke, funny thing was I killed the Bluefor arty observers at that town earlier, I shot one and then literally walked into the other one. :har:

I think I need to restart the mission, I think I left the "Main Tower Satchels Only" as yes. :hmmm:

Tho, I dont know if that's how we have always had it.. LGBs make a big boom.

EDIT: Mission restarted. But let's try to take out the main tower with satchels or LGBs.
Really no idea how that setting works, but I set it to "No".

As for Oberon's wall of text: Yes, radio tower should be taken out first. The rest
can do side missions or assemble a convoy or something in the meantime.
No point in trying to barge in through the front door if the tower is standing.

EDIT2: And yes, enemy air will be just as big of a threat against OPFOR.
At least they are doing SOMETHING now. :)

The map. The airbase in the South is also very nice, but it is much too close to Celle.

http://abload.de/img/d3pnbcp.png

The main targets work already - the side missions not yet.

http://abload.de/img/d4j5ztg.png

A close up of the base. To the north is a Bundeswehr base, the southern village with the beautiful name Fassberg (Barrelmountain) is held by a squad of British paras. The rest is potential enemy territory.
This is what to expect:

http://abload.de/img/d56zuoi.png

The map is already playable as an early alpha, the game mechanics run, weapons chest, teleport works, stil hunting a parajump bug . The enemy troop deployment works fine, still have to incluide all the P85 guns, also some vehicles have to be inserted, of course the side missions and some more testing and balancing.

Just thought I'd point out some of the things that ZeusAI does, and this is not
a "rant" post as I tend to usually do, just so those who arent familiar with ZeusAI,
can adapt to it.

Ok, first of all, infantry is WAY more aggressive. Accuracy has been lowered,
but engagement range is up to 500 meters, usually that is with machineguns.
If we are doing a main mission and are spotted, even if the message doesnt say
we've been, expect enemy infantry everywhere. They will be coming.

All AI units also shoot suppression fire. I tested it by being a regular soldier in
a AI lead squad, I was given targets that werent actual enemy soldiers, but
positions where the enemy was last seen.
So, if you are taking fire, you can crawl away, under fire. They just assume you
are where they saw you the last time.

AI also counts it's casualties, they pop smoke or even retreat if the AI think's they
are outnumbered. AFAIK, there is a suppression model too, so if you know the
general direction of the enemy and carry a "big gun", fire away, it might drive
them off.

Air.. err... it sucks, for the style we started to get used to with normal AI.
BUT, it's what it should have always been. Player can shoot ground targets with
an attack helo from 3-4km away, with zeusAI that range is about 1-1.5km(for AI).
Frustrating? Yes, but also a step forward with the air AI.
(vanilla air AI was just retarded)

And lastly, the base attacks... ffs.. they are ridiculous. And that is because of ZAI.
We've always had convoys pass next to our base doing nothing.
But ZAI isnt made for domi, or any specific mission, so it just does what it is
supposed to do: Engage enemy positions.
I'm not familiar with Domination, but I am assuming the patrols just patrols
on roads between city X an city Y.

Anywho, I had fun, frustrated at times, but still, fun.

I think it was Oberon who mentioned the.. err.. Cold War Rearmed? And there's a
domination for one of the old OFP maps, Everon if I recall correctly.
Might be an idea too. Everon was a great map. :yep:

Everyone who is not using any kind of soundmod, I just say: get one.
Stock sounds are so similar to each other that it's hard to know if it's
friendly or foe.

Overon's using the JSRS (or something), which is a good one.
But anything that makes the AK and M16/4 sound different is a plus.

EDIT: LOL

Takeda Shingen

Man, stream frame rates were crap today. :x

Oberon
06-07-13, 08:27 PM
I can confirm I'm using JSRS 1.5, it's a lovely little soundmod:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=11549

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM88y3LIKZA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4-i_-Ar8rQ

The battle that was taking place to the South-east of our base in the distance (when Dowly mentioned about the resistance camps) sounded quite impressive through JSRS.

I'm also using two other little mods I grabbed today, that is:

JTD FireAndSmoke
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7383
Quite nice, the smoke is thicker, better looking and the flames a bit more realistic. Obviously though, if you're going to destroy a battalion of vehicles then it might make some lag, but for our small domi engagements it's just fine.

WarFX: Blastcore:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12975
I had my eye on this for a little while but thought it'd screw with my connection until I noticed Dowly was using it. It generally makes the explosions a lot better, and puts in the more realistic looking mushroom clouds that explosions produce when of enough magnitude. It also makes the smoke grenades produce a more realistic plume of smoke, as shown in my screenshot above (although bear in mind that the grenade in that screenshot was stuck in the base forcefield).

What sound mod are you using Dowly?

Dowly
06-07-13, 08:31 PM
What sound mod are you using Dowly?

ACEX_SM, i.e. the one that comes with ACE 2. Seems to work without ACE 2,
might need CBA, no idea, but really like it.

Used to use JSRS, but I hate the SAW sound, so went with ACEX_SM.

Only problem with ACEX_SM is that I can't hear the Warrior's cannon.

That is something we should stop anyway. It makes voice communication absolutely impossible. If someone plays a song while we are at the base or when an area is clear, then I don't mind but not in the middle of an engagement or while approaching a hot zone where communication can make the difference.:-?

I have no problem with the sound files; I think they're funny. They're short, so it really doesn't cause a problem from my perspective. The problem I was referring to was playing full songs over TeamSpeak, which makes for copyright issues.

Schroeder

I know, but it's also effectively "jamming" our communication.
I don't mind if someone plays that stuff while there is no contact to be expected but the 25+ sec files in a combat zone are really annoying.:shifty:

Agreed, and the spamming of the same clips over and over again does become annoying. It's funny a couple of times, but it does grate eventually.
The 'jamming' scenario was one of the reasons I favoured ACRE but if we can exercise some self-restraint then it's not really that necessary.

Raptor1
06-08-13, 01:09 PM
I try to keep from playing the sound bytes too often or in the middle of combat. I don't think they're too much of a problem unless they're spammed too much when communications are vital.

As for the air threats and fixed roles mentioned on the last page, I'll try to carry a SAM at all times from now on. Anti-air is just about the only thing I can think of with which I've had any sort of consistent success, so I might as well make that useful.

Myeah, something borked that Domi.

For Arc:

Side mission on the South coast, task was to eliminate some guy who
was on vacation there. No infantry in the area, one BMP and one Tunguska,
both empty. Also, the dude wasnt there.

Main mission, directly east of the airfield, on the coast, Berezino or something.
No red circle marker, secondary objective was to destroy some radio tower, that
failed without us even being in the area. Once we got to the area, there was
no infantry there, saw one UAZ and two Tunguskas, all of which were empty. Radio tower
could be destroyed, but camps could not be captured.

Only parameter I can think of that somehow might have messed it was switching
artillery observers off at main target.

Anyways, running BLUFOR Takistan now, with arty observers at main targets.

Just can't bloody win at times. Schroeder and I went for a hostage rescue side mission.
Our Merlin took a hit when going there, all good right? I mean, the only thing damaged
was the hull and it had barely changed color from the bright green. Well balls to that!
After clearing the target, I went to get the chopper. I hit Q, nothing happens.
I glance at the damage panel aaaand the thing had lost all it's fuel. :shifty:

Ok, plan B: Get the MI8 from base, fly it waaaay around on the edge of the map
and come back the same way. We get the hostages, minus 1*, inside the helo
and start our return trip.

Around the halfway point, a red dot appears on the radar, waaaays away from
any civilization. That red dot turned out to be a Shilka which proceeded to
obliterate us. :/\\!!

Oberon
06-10-13, 02:55 PM
Yes, the Merlin seems to have the fuel tank from the Mitsubishi Zero installed, you only have to look at it the wrong way and all the fuel empties out. That's why I parked the fuel truck up by the helicopters, nine times out of ten you'll get in a Merlin and the fuel tank will be empty. For missions that you don't need to take the MHQ it's better to take the Black Hawk...not that that will do anything against a rampaging Shilka of course.

The copter repair spot has been destroyed and repaired more times than a presidents career, I wouldn't worry about it.

On another note, after many unsuccessful attempts, Dowly and I finally infilitrated and liberated the main objective town, although Garmund came under enemy control.

Where have you guys been yesterday? I've reported you all AWOL!!!!
I was all alone on the server keeping our honour up by infiltrating the side mission target (without success because I couldn't find the chemical container that we are supposed to blow up...). I then blew up one of our stranded Merlins (you know...out of fuel...).
The irony is that scratching a bush raptures it's fuel tank but when you want to destroy it so that it respawns I had to use 2 NLAW, 200 rounds of .50cal from a dropped in Humwee and finally a satchel.
Anyway I drove home, killed an invading force of baddies and repaired all the buildings that had been destroyed....
Great Success.:shifty:

I joined a bit later. The container was the empty one in front of the building,
think the briefing said that we need to blow up any containers that could be used
to transport the chemicals out of the plant.

And then things started to go wrong. Next side mission was to rescue downed
pilots, so I headed over there in a Little Bird. Got shot down by a ninja convoy,
respawned and got to the pilots in a Medivac Black Hawk. About 1km from base,
another convoy shoots at me and takes out the tail rotor. I fly over the base
and tell the pilots to eject and land the Black Hawk few meters from the Chopper Service.

After getting the pilots to the flag, I head over to the damaged BH with a
repair truck, but before I get to it, the convoy that shot up the BH rolls in
to the airfield. I run to the Apache and take it up, just to realise Hellfires
cant be shot manually. I land the Apache near the Osprey and run to the
Abrams we got from the earlier side mission and take the convoy out.

I go back to the now repaired BH to fly it back to it's place when I start taking
fire from an infantry squad that was now entering the AF. Take them out with
one of the GL cars we have, hitting the Apache a few times accidentally.
With base clear, I take the BH up and something locks on to me, so I make
a hard landing, which destroys the engine...

Then, I rage quit. :/\\!!

PS. Chopper Service is destroyed.

Meh its alright then, well just completed a side mission, got us a Warrior, then went to scout out the new target NUR, man are they armed, saw 2 BMPs, a tank, and what looked like a tank destroyer in one spot, couple of BTRs and so on. Failed at destroying the radio tower, next time though :arrgh!:

Basically it went like this, I para'd in. Got close enough to recon the area for a bit then moved in after a close encounter with a patrol. Got close to the tower, saw a guy standing right there shot him, I didnt see the guy next to him behind a bush who saw him fall, so he called me in, I shot him, panicked, laid my 2 satchels down (Not knowing I needed 5) and jetted and blew them. Long story short, a manhunt ensued, I used my SMAW to disable a BMP and a Tank (T 62, 64 maybe?) Then died in vain. The positions of what I scouted probably moved too. Sorry guys:/\\!!

All major features are (hopefully) running, it's still in beta, but we need to test it under live conditions, there is only a limited amount of errors a lonely penguin can find :03:.
I can try to host a game later this evening, when I'm back home. If anyone is up to give it a first try and help me with some bug hunting, you're more than welcome.

Obviously, it's up to you what you want to put in, but I think that'll give us and the enemy a wide range of vehicles to fight with.
Also, in regards to anti-air protection for the base, I noticed in the P85 mod there's a Chapparel and M163, so that should cover it.

Penguin
06-13-13, 02:30 AM
Thanks for the links, Oberon. I'll take a look into them, though I had some problems with the CBA on my comp - and many of those vehicles need this addon. I think I'll mix the additional aircrafts/choppers into a single file to download, to avoid 785698 different addon links. We also have to see how those play together with the 85 crafts in terms of balance.

As for air-defense: I added a stinger pod onto our base, the Chapparel is a bonus vehicle yet :) - I heard there's also a toy for suicidal pilots on the base now. The Poles are also in the game now to add more variety.
I have updated my previous post with the latest file for the server (as of beta04 now)
