Any takers for some simulated military manshooting tonight?
I'll pop in as usual.
@Fin: Stock game, continue the lite missions for now (IIRC).

That's the plan, don't know what else to run at the moment.
I would propose a switch to Cold War Rearmed though. Really want to give that a shot.

That's exactly what I was thinking too. Especially the campaign would be kick-ass when played as coop, and if it doesn't work then there's a bunch of coop missions available.
I'm ok with CWR, too. The wittering guys have been playing their own made
Everon mission for the past 11 episodes or so, brings back memories. :yep:

If anyone is about to get Arma2 or any other game in the series it might be worth waiting for just a little while:
ArmA X: Anniversary edition (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=119845)
Includes all BIS made games and DLCs in the series so far.
RLS: June 2011 (probably 22. June - OFP released -- 10 years)
Pack includes: Operation Flashpoint, Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, Arma: Arma Assault, Arma: Combat Operations, Arma: Queen's Gambit, Arma II, Arma II: Opertion Arrowhead, Arma II: British Armed Forces a Arma II: Private Military Company
Disc: 4x DVD
Language: English (others unknow)
Price: 40-60e (not sure yet)
Seems to be missing Red Hammer? :06:
Or was it included in a later patch for free?
Arclight
06-28-11, 12:35 PM
So do we want to get into CWR now then? Might be able to get it running in time. (might)
I'm all set, installation is like with any other mod (might want to include ZeuAI if you're going with new shortcut :hmmm:), Armaholic downloaded at full bandwidth for me.

Seems to be missing Red Hammer? :06:
It was made by that other company, the name of which I shall not mention :D
I'm also set and ready to go with CWR. Just beware that some of the missions are slightly more "interesting" with Zeus enabled.
Arclight
06-28-11, 01:02 PM
I'm all for "interesting". Better than instant 1-shot kills from AI under any circumstances from 300m away. Even if they missed, the next one would get ya. :shifty:
Got the lot downloaded, gonna set it up.

"Interesting" as in the mission called Bomberman, where at the start I accidentally moved about 10 cm and was promptly mowed down by a T72 with its NSV :DL

Ah right. :O:
Was a good campaign, tho. :yep:

My mate's just started playing ARMA II Free, anyone got any really good co-op missions we can try to impress him with? cos i think he's still a bit skeptical about it all. Obviously they can't have any addons and have to be just for plain vanilla ARMA II.
We've tried 'Dirty Rascal' and 'Cipher' which are both fantastic missions but we could do with something really well polished and not too tactical/difficult. I am also going to try 'Island Twilight' just to see how he does on it.

How well will ARMA II:Operation Arrowhead run on my rig?I ran ARMAII ok with it a while back but canned it after getting tired of all the early bugs.I read that Arrowhead is much better optimized than base ARMA II is.I dont need it to look as good as it would on a $4,000.00 rig just so long as I can run the game and be able to see what I am doing.Be brutally honest please if it will not run at an enjoyable just tell me and I will simply wait a few months and buy it when I have a better rig to run it on.
My PC:
Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
intel Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
3.0 GB RAM
Vista 32 bit
P.S. I am D/Ling the demo as we speak but it will take about 4 hours so you guys might be able to answer my question before then.

I think I will just wait and obtain a better rig first this one is about 3 years old and it did not have best stuff even then.I had a copy of the first arma a while back that I had bought retail it ran pretty good and I had tons of mods that I liked so I tryed armaII not long after it first came out and to be honest at the levels I had to set it at arma1 looked/ran better I really hated that blur or fuzz that ArmAII had that I bet looks fine on a better rig but on a low end one it looked like ass.
At some point I removed both games and dont have them anymore I think my brother in law borrowed both of my Arma discs because I had removed them from my PC.I went ahead and bought the complete Arma I from Gamersgate it was on sale for $10.00 so I figured what the hell?I like it and its mods so I'll mess with that for now.

Cheers Dowly.
EDIT: Wow mighty complicated to install. Will leave that for another day.
Hmm keep getting a black menu screen when loading up the British forces addon.
I get the BI and ArmA II logos fine, but when it gets to the menu i sill have the menu and sound but the background is all black.
Its fine when i load up OA but only happens when i load up BAF.
I hope my current download (King Arthur Collection) finishes fast so I can start downloading this, been watching lets plays lately and I honestly can't wait to play.
Glad I got in on that Sun giveaway of Arma2.:O:

In short: Looks like BIS have finally solved, or are solving, the #1 issue most people have with the Arma-series of games: MP jerkiness. Patch 1.60 is delayed for a few weeks because of this, which doesn't sound like a bad tradeoff at all. Judging by what people say of the latest betas the fixes they've implemented indeed work.
http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=2019995&postcount=1
The good news is we have made very promising progress with multiplayer interpolation, which looks like it could have a huge impact on solving jerkiness and jumping of remote units in multiplayer

I heard that the Project Reality mod beta is out. Has anyone tried this yet? I haven't looked into and as I haven't played for a while and thought this might give me something new to get my teeth into.
I have the same gripe about Arma2 as most others, not easy to find people who want to play it how it's supposed to be played.
Fincuan
09-23-11, 12:44 PM
I've done a few short PR tryouts, and imho it isn't quite worth all the buzz yet. It's very well done and there's nothing particularly wrong with it, but it's nothing groundbreaking either. It feels like any good usermade Arma2 gamemode, except that it's really easy to find PR servers with lots of players. The installation "process" is very straightforward and nothing gets overwritten, so you won't lose anything by trying.
edit: I haven't yet come across a PR game where it's played "like it's supposed to be played". The games I've taken part in have been far less chaotic than your average round of Domination, but still far from the well organized large coops at Tacticalgamer and a few other communities.

That would be well cool. My problem is my location. Very rarely do I get a decent ping anywhere further west than Germany, the international connections out of Thailand go through a government bottleneck so most players I encounter online are germans, russians, aussies. Not to mention the time difference- I'm 6/7 hours ahead of GMT...
Would be good to have a platoon of submarine commanders! I guess we'd be hiding in bushes the whole time, taking a shot that we can't possibly miss, and then running away! :D

This might be a mission some of you fancy trying, we do this with the EG group on a Sunday night:
Single Player Prologue:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12135
Co-op part 1:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14211
and part 2:
http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14632
Zombie survival Arma-style, no mods required, just needs Combined Ops to run. Needs a good four or five players to survive it - ammo conservation is essential - but the atmosphere is brilliant, and the way it's coded is masterful. Try the SP prologue for a flavour of the co-op experience.
If playing as a group it's good to have everyone download it first, as the file's pretty large for an arma mission and can take some time to stream from the host. :salute:
ajrimmer42
09-26-11, 11:51 AM

I know one or two thinking of picking it up again, I used to run a regular night at Eurogamer, so if we pool our forces we could get quite a squad going? Will likely be a week or two before I have enough time to get to it (dissertation to finish) but after that I should be good for a regular-ish night.

I read that the latest uügrade they did also improved the AI, but they gave no details.
Any info on that? Does it make sense to play sP now, does friendly AI obey orders in a better way, and is enemy AI more reacting? I have deinstalled ArmA2 many months ago since in SP it made absolutely no sense to play. I prefer to set up one single mammoth scenario, attach randomised "infantry garrisons" guarding the villages and settlements, and randomised infantry patrols along the c ountryside in a way that every couple of hours every piece of land gets visited by enemy troops sooner or later, and then I just stroll around and do what I feel to do - get from A to B, or cleaning a plae, or survive as long as possible.
Any info on the improved AI, please? Vehicles, weapons, gfx effects and such are totally uninteresting for me.

I'm also organising something for a week or two's time with some other people, so we could get a big group if we combine forces. Will keep the thread up to date as & when there are details, maybe be the start of a regular thing. :salute:

Thanks for the brief game chaps, sorry I didn't stay longer. Domi's not so good with only a few people, I get on better with smaller, single mission co-op kinda stuff as it tends to keep things focused, I get lost far too easily!
All welcome to tag along for the game I'm setting up, and if there's another night going let me know, I'll see what scenarios I can dig up that might be fun to try. :)

Possessed Diesel Stations in Takistan
An innocent looking Shnell Diesel station-office-thingy. The bombed-out look adds to the war-torn atmosphere.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/9750/2012012900002.jpg
Satchels are planted to destroy the station, but they fail miserably. Artillery is called in, and when that fails, even more artillery is called in...
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/2673/2012012900006.jpg
The cash register was doubtlessly laughing at our pathetic attempts to destroy the station.
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/6596/2012012900008.jpg
The station then decides to kill me for no apparent reason.
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/5778/2012012900009.jpg
Task Force attempts to offer himself as blood sacrifice, but fails that too. After a while he manages to, but the station doesn't seem particularly interested.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/158/2012012900014.jpg
Even more satchels are then brought in. The station's lust for blood and explosives is finally satisfied and it collapses. Mission accomplished!

I had fun, as usual when more players join, it took nearly 3 hours to take
the 1st town. :O: Tho, everyone stayed together pretty much, so that was good.
I know it's all for fun and that, but it turns to frustration quickly if we can't
take a town quickly. Hence, it's good to play as a team, start following someone
, keep guard on his rear/sides, if he is downed wait for a bit and see where the
threat is and either take care of it or drag the lead to safety.
Anywho, it was a really nice game. :salute:

I think we should make small fireteams like SWAT4 for example
since we have at least 6 players we could split in 2 teams of 3 members
having at least a medic and someone with AT equipment per team.
also it would be wise that the steam don't wander off from eachother and stay quite close in case the other team needs support.
perhaps it's something to try next time.

Yeah, the primary reason I paradropped into the other side of town was to try and draw a bit of heat away from the airfield. In regards to airstrike, perhaps that's something that can be scripted into the Squad leader with a half hour recharge rate. Then when it comes to dropping the munitions, spawn in the bombs at altitude and let them drop in sequence in a straight line across the aim zone. Most Arc Light missions are done from altitude anyway so you don't really need a B-52 model. Just 84 x 500 lb bombs.
Although, to be fair, most B-52 missions these days are cruise missile launches, the heavy rain comes from the Bones and they carry as much as the BUFFs:
84× Mk-82 Air inflatable retarder (AIR) general purpose (GP) bombs
81× Mk-82 low drag general purpose (LDGP) bombs
84× Mk-62 Quickstrike sea mines
24× Mk-65 naval mines
30× CBU-87/89/CBU-97 Cluster Bomb Units (CBU)
30× CBU-103/104/105 Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD) CBUs
24× GBU-31 JDAM GPS guided bombs (Mk-84 GP or BLU-109 warhead)
15× GBU-38 JDAM GPS guided bombs (Mk-82 GP warhead)
24× Mk-84 general purpose bombs
12× AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW)
96× or 144× GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb GPS guided bombs (not fielded on B-1 yet)
24× AGM-158 Joint Air to Surface Standoff Munitions (JASSM)
This took my eye whilst browsing Armaholic, but it's only for ARMA2 :damn:.

I asked who didn't have A2 a while ago and no one responded. Therefore I declare everyone interested has it and we can safely run A2 scenarios.
Maybe that will get the ferret in gear and install it. :O:
Warfare... only got a taste of it in A2 campaign. Seems awfully uninspired. :-?
Added the precio- offroad special. And a T-55; not the most effective tank but better than nothing. Er, remembered the Kasatka... Ah, fancy Mi-17Sh. Pair of BRDM-2's.
I'm still a bit torn on making IFV's liftable; realistically they are just too heavy. With an exception: BMP-2. So, thanks to UN leftovers, there's a liftable M113 and BMP-2. They can also load an ammobox.
Changed respawn behaviour for the Blackhawk: only when destroyed, same as the Heuys and Chinook. Other helos respawn after being destroyed or abandoned for 5 mins.
Think I'll make a version with the A2 gear now. I'm rather interested in some of the RH weapon packs as well. :hmmm:

It's not the installing, it's the downloading and more than probably contacting

The easiest way is to run Arma2 content like any other mod in OA. I believe the latest OA version accepts modfolders anywhere on your HD, so even separate installation locations don't matter. That, or just install them into the same folder.

Hey all,
Just wanted to introduce my self and say hi.
I'm an avid ARMA 2 player, and I usually find my self on the 15 MEU server, either on their Domi or Insurgency servers.
They use the latest (And unfortunately last) version of ACE for ARMA 2.
ACE has stopped now? I guess they're getting ready for ARMA3 then?
Arc, I think we should look into ACE again, I've just looked at their list of features:
What does ACE change compared to the original game?
Improved IR Strobe simulation. IR Strobes can be attached to players and vehicles, can be re-used and preplaced by mission designers via special functions.
Improved flare simulation that makes flares visible in daylight.
Improved explosion effects. Explosions don't just create a whistle in your ears like in the original game, but they also can knock you out, blind you and make you deaf.
Realistic working laser rangefinding devices. No magic range display.
Realistic bullet trajectory depending on the type of ammunition and barrel length of the weapon.
Realistic rocket ballistics. Rockets hava a parabolic flight trajectory like in real life. Not a straight shot.
Improved backpack system which is backwards compatible to Arma2 units which don't feature the original game's backpack system.
Improved vehicle damage simulation. The damage depends on ammunition used and where a vehicle was hit, like in real life. No incremental damage destruction.
and more ...
What does ACE add to the game?
New weapons like HK416 series, HK417 series, new G36 rifles, several rocket launchers for the eastern factions like RPG22, RPG27 and RPG29 and many many more.
More deployable explosive devices like Claymore mines, Bouncing Betties and simple C4.
Multiple non-lethal weapons such as flashbangs and teargas for western and eastern factions.
Individual arming of winged aircraft to match loadout with the needs of the mission.
Working afterburners.
Aerial refueling.
Ability to tow broken/stuck vehicles and replace flat tires.
Maptools, to draw your battleplan on the map and share with your subordinates.
Wind influence on bullets.
Sniper tools such as Spotting Scopes and wind measuring tools.
Improved sight adjustments to calculate an accurate shot in combination with the sniper tools, also supporting indirect fire.
Built in cargo system, which lets you transport equipment in vehicles.
Ability to exchange ammunition between vehicles.
Better interaction with your environment via a built in interaction menu, that unclutters the action menu of the original game.
Ability to rest weapons on objects for improved stability - also working bipods.
Unique wounding system which features dragging wounded players into cover for improved medical assistance.
and more ...
The thing about ACE 2 is (at least when I last tried it ~6 months ago) that it's
PITA to install (instead of normal addon install method, you need the sixupdater
nonsense), it's WAY TOO complex which wouldn't be such a bad thing if there'd
be some damn documentation on how stuff works. :nope:
All in all, if it's in the same state as it was 6 months back, they shot themselves
in the knee with a nuke with ACE 2. Way too hard to learn, for the wrong reasons.
But, if there's some proper documentation covering everything that has changed
from ACE 1, then yeah, I'm all for it.

I shall have a look tomorrow and see what I can make of it all. :yep:
EDIT: From what I can see of a quick look at their FAQ - Installation, the Six Updater is only required if you want to automatically be kept up to date, which given that they're aiming to make the latest update the last major one (aside from corrections to game-stopping errors if they crop up) then I don't think it will be needed. Sounds familiar to TortoiseSVN.

I don't know when you last used SIX updater, but in the past couple of months it has gotten a HUGE overhaul. The UI is improved to make it user friendly to most, mods are now super easy to install and manage via SIX, server pre-sets were improved to help manage 'x' mods for 'x' server. And the ability to download and install mods via server has been improved greatly.

Yeah, their getting ready for ARMA 3.
I like what they did with ACE 2, they pretty much stretched the mod as far as it could possibly go with ARMA 2, and they did one hell of a job.

ACE is well worth the effort. And TBH sixupdater is not that much of a PITA once you understand what's actually going on. It's the best way of managing multiple mod sets to maintain compatibility across them. Wouldn't play ARMA2 without it.
I must get online with you clowns and have a crack one day.

I just have a general dislike for 3rd party stuff. If I want another mod selection, I can create a new shortcut and customise the target line, done.
It's just another thing to figure out to me, another (unnecessary) layer of complexity.
(Apart from that, when something is updated I like to poke around and see what changed exactly. :D)
Right, so since we've all got A2, how about A2 Domi next weekend? Curious about the carrier. :hmmm:
I'm working on an extended mission on the Zargabad map. Might actually finish it. (sort of inspired by that map we used to play in A1; city with all the enemies about, multiple objectives to complete)
Yeah, I'm ok with A2 Domi. With any luck the new GPU's here in time so I can
bump up the terrain details abit and maybe, just maybe, see something from
behind all the trees. :O:

(pulled that from the bit of script I used to fill an ammobox, hence the formatting)
And I stumbled across the perfect map for Fulda Gap/West Germany operations.

Ah right, and I noticed the BOAR stuff from this "trouble" fellow. Think if you grab all that you've got a complete cold war/fulda gap setup (armor, APC/IFV,cars etc) for the UK.
http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=arma2_oa_files_addons_vehicles_heavyarm or
Already grabbed the Chieftain and the Challie I, I think the Centurion is a bit out of era for an '80s Cold War battle.
Just gave Raptor the link to a Soviet tank pack that has the T-55, 64, and 80. :yep:

Looks like a nice selection of modern Western rifles in RH's packs. I bet some of those made their way into ACEX too.
Are the packs ACE compatible, especially bullet damage-wise?
Arclight
02-20-12, 12:06 PM
Think so (with minor tweaking), seems Robalo redid the configs for ACE; http://wiki.ace-mod.net/wagn/Compatible_Mods
*oh right: tracked down a few bugs in the configs. Can I just correct it, pack it to .pbo and have it work? Or do I need to resign them or something?

Repacking is enough unless you're running sig checks on your server. The modified file then needs to be distributed to everyone else too.
Arclight
02-20-12, 06:53 PM
It was checking, but not anymore. Just caused trouble now and then anyway.
I'll put the 2 edited files on the TS3 lobby file-server, don't wanna host them anywhere public since it's not my own work.
Corrected a few mistakes in the script and fixed 5 or so bugs in the configs; all of the weapons work now, save for 1 MP7 variant which simply does not exist in the files. That's a LOT of weapons. :D

Right so we're agreed then? Requirements for the regular Domi are Combined Operations and RH weapon packs? Anything else?
What are the requirements for the Fulda Gap stuff being worked on?
I think the Challenger I and the Soviet tank pack are two definates.
There's also the Chieftain and the F4.
And the Celle map.
It'll probably be a while before I realise anything workable, I'm an editor n00b really, particularly when it comes to scripting.
Arclight
02-23-12, 01:31 PM
Could help with the scripting, at the very least I'm familiar with the syntax.
But that's all apart from our regular stuff then? Want to have a Domi ready for saturday, would be nice to know what I have to work with.

Well, unless we can get a B-52 or a Backfire, I can't think of anything we need for regular Domi besides what has already been mentioned. Well, maybe the French weapon pack if you can put it in, but it's not important.
My never-to-be-finished-mission will need Celle, the Soviet vehicle pack and the Challenger I, at least, though.
Any chance to get the RH's AK pack too? Not a necessity, but if it's easy to
add then wouldn't mind blasting baddies with the RK-95. :hmmm:

Currently halfway through d/l of OA, best get reading this thread to see what else I need - anyone got a comprehensive list. :D

Alright, so:
Combined Operations. If you only have Operation Arrowhead, you can get CO "lite" by using Arma2 free.
CBA (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6231) (required by many)
GLT missilebox (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6071) (for the aircraft)
All OA RH weapon packs and R3F Armes (http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=arma2_oa_files_addons_weapons&s=title&w=asc&d=30) pack.
A2 RH AK pack (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9029).
Challenger 2 pack (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=11894).
Tu22M3 (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=13405)
B-52H (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7728)
I'd also suggest;
OH-58 (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=11039)
Nice little helicopter, kind of a mix of the Lynx and Little Bird. Hoping the laser can be used, to lase for A-10.
Il-76 (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=10747)
Transport plane for Opfor. Blufor has C-130, kinda makes sense.
CH-53D and CH-46E (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9512)
Workhorses for USMC. Nice choppers to boot.
Mkay? Not mkay?
Mkay? Not mkay?

I'm good for that, the Kiowa is a nice bird and works well with a fully manned Apache for a Hunter-Killer pack. Like the Little Bird/Cobra combinations in Vietnam.

If the Apaches jockeys can hold their fire until target has been given to them. :O:
I shall say what I have said number of times before:
Shall we not add too many things that says BOOM and take out half a town?
That only leads to what has happened over and over again with our ArmA games:
People want toys that are over powered, they get them, play for two weeks,
get bored and stop showing up. Also, another point I've made zillion times
before: Things that say BOOOM, when used too much, take out all the cover
from the infantry players who would like to go to the town.
We need a balance of some sort with this stuff. The AI can't effectively fight
against player controlled tanks, attack helos nor aircraft which makes them the
same as adding a radio trigger that just clears the town by pressing 0-0-1.
Of course, as a 99% infantry player, this just my opinion and all that. :salute:

Myeah, that's why I'm reluctant to add the more powerfull stuff by default (or make a tank airliftable, apart from it being nonsense). I'd rather keep the stuff that's there by default "usefull but vulnerable"; for example, a Stryker has the automated turret up top. In a hull-down position it can scout with the thermals and provide support, making it usefull, but it's far too vulnerable to charge into a target area.
Stuff like an Apache or A-10 that respawns on its own just leads to suicide runs and half the team parking their bum at base waiting for something to respawn. :-?
Imho "cars" at base (including armed), light armour from side missions, heavy armour and attack aircraft from main targets.

Mkay? Not mkay?
Not Mkay.
The Aircraft have to go, the Tu22m3 and the B52H are just gamebreakers, pretty much I repeat what Dowly sais here regarding that things that do too much boom ruins the game for me.
I like to play Spec Ops style...infantry with perhaps some armor support or a Combat Helo picking off targets marked by ground units I wouldn't mind a A10 in the same role. but aircraft that are able to turn the place upside down in a clusterfudge....then I might as well suggest a nuke...launch it, game ends all targets destroyed, all towns cleared of enemies and call it a night.
since we are a small group keep it small in the game, at least in a reasonable size that it works for us.

No no, I'll just use the bombers for scripted stuff. Not gonna see them in Domi. No way to aim them and AI can't use them either anyway.
(*on that note, might as well say the missilebox and bombers are optional; just some stuff people can use in missions but not required by default/for Domi)
BTW, Arczilla, you got any of them coops stored up? Could try them this Saturday? :hmmm:
Any idea if the maker of the "quickies" we tried some restarts ago has made any more of them?
Nkelly or close to that, them 15-20min missions.
The problem I have is that I suck as infantry, most of my time involves being shot by a guy I have trouble spotting but everyone else seems to see quite plainly, and the only time I try to go stealth a certain someone strolls into town looking like this:

I'm happy to Apache or Tank with Task Force, myself and he have worked together a lot on Red Orchestra with their tanks and I like to think that we make a good team, him gunning and me driving. I'll probably avoid A-10 flying because I cannot put the view distance up far enough for it to actually be effective or I suffer the dreaded 'Receiving' bug which usually results in me flying into a hill whilst I am unable to see or do anything.

Could pick a medic and stay back a bit: since we use revive someone is desperately needed to drag our sorry bottoms to cover for a revive. Or a TL, drop yourself a gun for fire support. Drop another ammobox so we've got more Javelins or Stingers available.
Or the engineer stuff that now mostly falls on me: Fly the wreck-lift to pick up behind someone. Service vehicles at base, straighten up a bit. Rebuild service stations. Fly in a salvage truck so a FARP can be set up (provided we're using vehicles).
Just parking on a nearby hill with a pair of binoculars is great: we're trying to stay low to avoid getting shot, so it can be difficult to be aware of enemy movement. A spotter relaying that would be a great help.
Just don't sit at base for half an hour waiting for whatever vehicle you got blown up. :O: (general statement, nothing personal)

The link to the relevant mod you provided for our convenience seems to be malfunctioning. :hmmm:
I'm more than happy to be an engineer, ecstatic in fact, but you're usually already the engineer so I don't pick engineer 2 in order to avoid the continual
"Two, return to formation."
"Two, fall back."
"Two, return to formation."
"Two, state position."
"Two, fall back."
and so on and so forth.

First thing I do is tell team-members to hold, stops it right. Plus, you can use that interface to leave the group. Sorry, that argument is invalid. :O:

Fair enough. I'll see what happens whenever I'm able to play next, which will probably be Saturday night.

Again, nothing personal, just saying it's a bit frustrating if we have, say, 4-6 people and half of them are trying desperately to gain ground (repeatedly getting shot by that 1 git hiding in the bushes somewhere) while the others are nowhere to be seen. I don't care if they are doing something, anything, besides waiting for a respawn.
It doesn't happen with the bonus vehicles since then you need to go and fetch the wreck. I like adding toys, they are fun, but gameplay wise it just murders the game.
Oh, nothing personal taken, it's just repeatedly being shot at and starting at a counter clicking down for about three minutes isn't that much fun either. It works best as a team, I agree, but the skill difference between myself and the rest of the squad means it's probably better I work in the background. :yep:
IMHO, it all boils down to situational awareness.
For those who don't know, you can hold down RALT and move the mouse to
look around.
Pick a partner in your mind who you want to follow, cover the areas he doesn't see
i.e. if he is moving along a wall, you turn around and watch the back, no one
gives a crap how many kills you have, so don't shoulder shoot and be in the open. (I swear, the next who gets wounded coz of that, I finish them off myself)
Opening comes up, lead covers the nearest corner and looks a bit inside, you
move to the other corner of the door/opening and check the other side, then
move in and check the area.
SA in general is IMHO the biggest problem we have. We make a plan, we start
to move in and within 5 minutes or when the first forest comes, we are all over the place.
Of course, we are playing for fun and all that, but it does get frustrating to fight the same town over and over again when it could be handled with 1-2 tries. :salute:
I understand Dowly, and I try to do it that way but it usually just winds up with me being pinned down in a shed somewhere.
I'm being pessimistic because I'm tired and feeling rough, it'll probably be fine in the next game, so long as someone ties Raptor to a tree or something. :yep:

Fair enough,
was fearing you plan to have a WWIII in your Domi with that equipment.
@Oberon, stick with me and arclight I take it he's the TL no matter if he's an engineer or not I let him take point and follow him and keep him covered, works pretty well and we could always do with more to provide better cover and ofcourse support went things get hot. It does work because one session me, Task force and Arc did some side missions without suffering casualties.
and if you want to be more in the back grab the medic gear and keep us patched up :)
I take it we are back on the Vanilla ArmA2 & OA without Ace2? because I already removed that junk.

Alright, so:
Combined Operations. If you only have Operation Arrowhead, you can get CO "lite" by using Arma2 free.
 Already have A2, but think I need to reinstall as performance is terrible whereas it used to be great! Maybe in a previous attempt at running some mods :hmmm:. No ACE mods?
Then I'll practice, although if I just show up at least I'll make Oberon look fantastic.

So what's the latest word on the use of ACE? I'd really hate to see it go given all the features it brings to the table.
Arclight
02-24-12, 04:12 PM
Well, what does it really bring to the table?
Zeroing is already in. We're already using a revive system. Fire is plenty stable without specifically deploying a bipod, etc.
In the end it proved too cumbersome. Even with proper supplies I could rarely get a wounded individual back on his feet. For zeroing I have to hit a combo, open a range table, deduce the proper setting and adjust the setting. In OA, you just hit PgUp or PgDown to set it.
Also, the range-finder: I have to take one and a battery, load the battery and then the battery disapears from inventory and stays loaded into the rangefinder. What's the point of that step? Why not asume that the range-finders provided have a battery loaded?
tl;dr it wasn't fun. :hmmm:

The most important ACE features for me are, in no particular order:
Wind now affects projectiles
More realistic ballistics for projectiles. Stock ballistics are really far off.
Realistic muzzle velocities for weapons. M16 and M4 aren't the same performance anymore.
Precise range adjustments for sniper scopes
The ability to support your weapon on objects, especially when standing and kneeling.
An improved backpack system
Stamina effects
A medical system more complex than "click and heal"
WP, CN, flashbangs and other completely new weapon and munition types
Adjustable reticles, recoil effects on reticles(some)
Armor penetration simulation and other vehicle damage adjustments
Weapon jamming and overheating
Tank and chopper FCSs
Explosions and other effects
Whatever else I forgot
Some of those are indeed included to some extent in OA, but ACE takes them a lot deeper.

Those are nice. I'm a bit of a gun-nut, so better weapons modeling is something I really appreciate. Magazines determining a weapon's performance is still the most puzzling "feature" of these games to me.
Precise range adjustments for sniper scopes
Nice in theory, for snipers, but the average grunt doesn't need 0.25 mil adjustments.
The ability to support your weapon on objects, especially when standing and kneeling.
It's a nice thing, but one I often found myself struggling with. Deploy, undeploy, wondering whether it's deployed so I hit the combo and the menu thingy pops up and I have to backspace... not handy in a fire fight.
An improved backpack system
... eh? It's a bag, you put stuff in it. Works fine as it is.
Stamina effects
People we play with load up with so much gear that they collaps after 50 meters. Wasn't working out.
A medical system more complex than "click and heal"
Still prefer the system from the BIS modules. Lacking that, the revive script in Domi will do. Also, we don't have a dozen people providing cover, so the ACE system is a bit much.
WP, CN, flashbangs and other completely new weapon and munition types
Mostly useless, though I did enjoy the WP grenades.
Adjustable reticles, recoil effects on reticles(some)
Didn't notice that.
Armor penetration simulation and other vehicle damage adjustments
Penetration is already modeled. You were as surprised as me when we took out a T72 with a LAW, so whether or not it's actually "better" is debatable.
Weapon jamming and overheating
Meh, rather rare occurance. Though it does add to the MG experience.
Tank and chopper FCSs
Nice I guess, never in any.
Explosions and other effects
Can't say I care much for effects. Looks fine to me as is, though the sounds are horrendous.
Yes, ACE does take things deeper, and manages to make it no fun in the process. I had to look for a tutorial on using satchels... bit silly.
I'd rather have something that makes the game more realistic without completely changing the game and piling on features that I'll either never use or never notice, or be annoyed by because they are a more cumbersome version of something that was already in there.

Erm, so I came up with a bit of scripting that can put in music when you're at base. It's local, so it fades the farther away you get, and stops when there's no one around.
But it puts the mission file at like 110MB... is this desirable? Prolly a good idea to upload it somewhere so people can download it outside ArmA... would likely bring the server to a halt when people connect and download the mission otherwise. :hmmm:
Fincuan
02-25-12, 10:22 AM
Definitely put it somewhere else for download. What kind of music are we looking at? :D
