There´s not yet a review. The first comment on the game:

Die Steuerung ist bis jetzt sehr ungewohnt - Atmosphärisch ist es der Hammer und die Grafik ist Sahne :) Sprachausgabe ist komplett vorhanden, auch in den "Privaten" Dialogen mit der Besatzung.

Controls are unfamiliar so far - ambience and grafics are great. Complete speach is included, even the personal dialogues with the crew.

Hope this "translation" is useful.

Does anyone who have it know how the getting on/off the boat in pens works? Is it a simple loading screen / jump from one to the other or do you seamlessly walk off the boat onto the dock?

And even it it's true, why is it a problem? I never used the one in GWX, as it makes you transit the wrong side of the locks.

Also, if the game is as modable as they say it is (and in this regard obviously SH3 was modable), it will be an easy thing to add.

I understand what you mean, but I've already seen a comment like this:

''Noooo, there's no Kiel canal... I will have go all around Denmark again :damn:''

I'm really looking foward to the release day and weeks to come, I'm really sick and tired of the sillyness of always jumping to conclusions (OSP included).

The boat doesn't seem as roomy anymore, at least in that vid. Either my eyes have adjusted or maybe they did something to the FOV? I'm probably just geting used to it. I don't mind the sparse crew either. Scenery is sweeeeeet. Kiel Canal inclusion is sweeeeet!

After seeing the second video and seeing no noticeable way to get to the boat, I suspect you'll talk to someone, who'll ask if you're ready to go, and *poof*, you're on the boat. Someone who's actually played it will eventually chime in.

I have not seen any lightning yet. You can work the sonar station yourself as in SH3/4.

With map updates on, you get sound lines on the surface as well as target designation, but you can turn this off in the "options".

like in SH3/4, move your mouse over it so it is highlighted, click on it, you can then use home/end keys to rotate clockwise/counterclokwise.

@bert8for3

Open up a windows explorer window to C:\, then search for "*.jpg". Once its done you can sort the results by file creation time (or file last modified time). That should help you find where they are stored.

I assume the screenshots are stored as jpgs. Otherwise use a different extension.

...immersion killer number 1. :stare:You narrow-minded ones. The "clickable items glow" is the crews' auras. They change colours depending on a number of factors and being able to read them is hugely beneficial. Hopefully some new patch will allow me to dowse for convoys as well.

If they're all the same colour to you, it's because you're a cynical sceptic and full of negative energy.

manual TDC, but map updates on so I could check out how things work.

It works similar to SH3, but more limited. You can only change torp speed, depth, magnetic/contact, single tube/salvo.

Your XO will give you an estimated solution, but it is a gross approximation and needs to be thoroughly reworked.

You can not manually set gyro angles. They are determined by where you are aiming your scope. A yellow line shows up on the map showing the torpedo path w. time to target range. This allows to aim the torp based on target speed/course.

One nice thing is that you can keep the target "locked" and still rotate the scope.

I have no problem with the way it is designed, it fits in with the design that you are the skipper and not some crewman fiddling with dials.

don't forget I am playing with map updates "on" which gives the exact range, course and speed of the ships and in that instance, the ships were only moving at 1-2 knots, so it is not very dificult.

with map updates "off" and ships zigzagging, it will be a different ball game.

I do not not know if you can carry out an underwater attack. My sound guy is only level 1, so he is not very good.

At close distance, aka 1000m even a newb soundwatch should be able to follow a merchant. But i used this way to fire torps in sh3 vs DD cruising around me. I tried to anticipate they circular path on a 5 sec basis and market crosses on my map given the hydro data . Then fired a salvo on approx future position. During the whole war 40-45 in SH3 i sunk a dozen of DD this way and saved my sub from a certain death.

It's not easy, doesn't work every time but as a sign of realism i should be abl to do so. Sh3 allowed this desperate attempt, if sh5 can't, it is NOT an improvement over SH3 in realism. This is what dev promised us, fix some unrealistic methods form sh3 like speed calculation. They promised that Hardcore player will have all the setting to their disposal at 100% realism.
Sh5 is just a different approach to the sub sim, thus it doesn't mean it is more realistic than sh3 was.

Still you played with map notification on, i wonder how full realism difficulty leve looks like.

Maybe im being to optimistic here but maybe we should all wait until we actually have the game before writing it off, ya DRM sucks big time, but everything else half of the posts ive read in hear are of guys who have the game still trying to figure out how the new interface and such works.

Give it time im sure its not that bad and ya the modders will hopefully be able to add alittle more realism and eyecandy:rock:

I FULLY agree on that.

BUT

It's not to modders to complete a unfinished product, why i have to pay a full price for something that doesnt provide esential (to me) features, modders arent paid for that. They didnt add all we wanted - i know tech limits- but even took away (indeed, need more players feedback) some feature/graphics from previous sh.

Your method is surely not a realistic one and works only with the easy and poorly scripted AI escorts.
I would not work neither in real life or in MP versus human controlled DD.

I do not know a sigle case of such method being used by U-boats during the war. Unless you had GNAT torps, the best thing you could do was to try to get deep, instead remaining at periscope depth or shallow.
Many people tried such methods while we played MP combats with SH II vs DC just to get their subs duly sunk. :arrgh!:

But be happy maybe the AI escorts in SH V are as dumb as the ones in SH III so you can try your "realistic methods" :yeah:

Was there a law passed that says submarine simulators must be marketed to hardcore simulator fans?

Sure, it's got the "Silent Hunter" brand name, but as you said, Ubisoft is manned by men and women who are in it for the money, just like you are in it for the money when you go to your own job. Simulators are not "in" right now in our fast-paced "Modern Warfare" society, and for all we know, it was either this or no game at all.

I dont want to bitch the game, but why dev didn't left what was good in SH3 and 4? I'm sad that possibly modders will not have all the tools needed. I understand that UBI wants $$ back that they invested in the game, but i have to remind that SH5 is still based on old sh3 engine, so plenty of $$ saving.

I played MP too in sh3 and didn't get always sunk by DD -yes i was using Zaunkönig T-5.
My method is not historical, but there's a video on youtube showing how to sink a merchant based on hydrophone data, so no zig-zag.

Before everyone starts frothing at the mouth, you can set gyro angle, but its done via the periscope. Where you aim, factoring in the rest of the solution, determines the Gyro angle.

In SH3, to get a solution on a TGT, you had to lock the periscope and frequently had to set gyro angles 1+ degrees towards the bow to make sure you hit.

I actually prefer this system since you can lock a TGT for TDC purpose and input all the data pertaining to that TGT without having the periscope itself locked to the TGT. So you can lead the TGT as little or as much as you want, making it easier to target specific sections of the ship.

Being able to manually set gyro angles would have been nice, but this system works well and hitting a TGT w. manual TDC/map updates off is as hard in this game as in SH3.

Apart from that, you get the same data as in SH3. The only one I have not found so far is "depth under keel", forcing me to guesstimate based on the map.

One major complain which I have is the manual which is as bad as the SH4 one. It is 35 pages and glosses over or does not explain many aspects of the game.

I am also having problems with the stadimeter. When you read the range from the top mast as in SH4, the range is off and of course, the manual offers no explanation. If anyone has figured it out, I would appreciate the answer as well.

I expected that. That's part of making the game less intimidating to casual gamers. Most people (ie, not us) who play this game will do at the easier realism levels, so just need the basic interface explained. Big manuals mean complex games to most people. I'm actually surprised it's as big as that.

I remember having friends who were very interested in playing Advanced Squad Leader or Star Fleet Battles - till I pulled out the manuals, that is. That was the end of that.

I have not had enough time to tell. I presume it must be tied in to their "skill levels". Everyone starts on level 1.

I am actually very pleased that he does not give a 100% accurate solution, that would take all the challenge out of the game.

It would really be great if we had the crew running around and spinning values and such when you executed a crash dive. Didn't see anything like that happen when I heard the "Alarm" bell ring in this video. Would be great if we could mod such things in.

I'm wondering about a couple other things:
1) Are the bunks ever deployed in the fwd torpedo room? Normally they would be except when torpedoes were being serviced (or presumably when the ship was at battlestations and/or reloading torps).
2) Wonder if there is a torpedo reload sequence for the rear tube?

Water in the kiel canal looked nice, I must say.

There are some really stupid character clipping issues in the game so far right now. They are not really terrible and honestly the transparent SHIV crews and occasionally wooden SHIII crews were no better as far as offenses go - but I hope it gets fixed. It's a little weird to see that they decided to forego modeling every single man on the boat (clipping and graphics issues would be one of the reasons I'm sure), and yet the clipping is still very much there....

But it's not the end of the world and it can be fixed. Actually, one supremely ironic thing in all this is that while people were screaming about the game devs spending far too much resources on the sub interior and characters, I have to say that it is obvious from the game that this is NOT where most of the development effort went. The sub interior is still very much a compromise for performance, and you can tell it's a somewhat rough job. Under the skin however, I do sense a lot of very positive changes here.

As for being an interior skeptic, this scene suddenly sold me on why the interior is awesome:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c06-2.jpg

I stood here and just happened to order full speed ahead on the diesels. My jaw dropped to the floor at not even so much the sight as the sound of it. It was eye-wateringly beautiful machinery at work, right there. That one is really something to experience for yourself!

There are also some graphics things which struck me as a bit lazy and overcompromising. Explosion sprites are one of those things... they have much better animation now but the resolution of some of the sprites is godawful. One for the modders to fix yet again. Textures in the game generally are a little lacking...

At the same time, some of the new shaders are stunningly pretty.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c07-2.jpg

So the graphics are not ALL good news, but for what it's worth there are many important steps forward here over SHIII and IV that can be built up on. And the game performs really well - these looks come at the exact same FPS figures as SHIV to me, and that is great.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c09-2.jpg

Meanwhile, the terrain is absolutely gorgeous overall:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c08-2.jpg

Recognize that? It's Kiel - so much closer to the real thing!

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c10-2.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c15.jpg

Overall the terrain strikes you with sheer volume of objects and lushness. Some of the smaller details are toned down in ports compared to SHIV/III, but for the benefit of overall volume of things. Coastlines are infinitely better.

Take a look at this:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c14-1.jpg

Recognize it? Yep, that's the entrance to the Kiel canal, right out of the box.

But wait...
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c13-1.jpg

Curves! No more ugly square blocks making up the coasts. The game's shorelines now curve much more smoothly, and there's detail everywhere.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p301/myspb2006/c11-2.jpg

And the bunkers in port are not just a separate "map" in the game like the Captain's Office in SHIV. Nope, all these guys and things are part of the big game world and will be waiting for you as you dock your sub in real time.

I stood here and just happened to order full speed ahead on the diesels. My jaw dropped to the floor at not even so much the sight as the sound of it. It was eye-wateringly beautiful machinery at work, right there. That one is really something to experience for yourself!

There are also some graphics things which struck me as a bit lazy and overcompromising. Explosion sprites are one of those things... they have much better animation now but the resolution of some of the sprites is godawful. One for the modders to fix yet again. Textures in the game generally are a little lacking...

At the same time, some of the new shaders are stunningly pretty.

So the graphics are not ALL good news, but for what it's worth there are many important steps forward here over SHIII and IV that can be built up on. And the game performs really well - these looks come at the exact same FPS figures as SHIV to me, and that is great.

You know, guys, people can argue against eye candy all they want...this is great. I remember thinking with the first Silent Hunter, man, if only they could get the graphics up to the level of a cutscene...I'd say they've made some decent progress since 1996 :|\\

CCIP
03-01-10, 01:18 AM
I don't get it either. Graphics can really make a game. They DID arguably make SHIII (and IV) - they drew a crowd and got people's imaginations' going. More importantly, they got modders' imaginations going ("what if we could have these graphics, but with more realism/features"), and that ensured not only a fun game out of the box but real longevity for the series as a sim.

I think this one's got real legs and the looks don't hurt her any.

I can't wait to pick this game up and I agree that the graphics are absolutely gorgeous and with modders helping it along...this is going to be a great platform for future subsimming.
I sure do miss the dials and compass though.
How likely is it (having played it you have a better idea than I) that modders will be able to create a UI that will incorporate the more traditional SH features?
I mean, there's gotta be a way to input a heading besides the map or the "heading to view" option, right? It'd be crazy not to!

On explosions , ok I know WWII pics are black and white but most you look , ships being hit , its looks mostly like bubbling black clouds of smoke and small piece of the ship going up..

http://www.secretcodebreaker.com/ship01.jpg
http://www.abload.de/img/hms_barham_explodesz5zn.jpg
HMS Braham explodes
Barham was hit by three torpedoes from the German submarine U-331, commanded by Lieutenant Hans-Dietrich von Tiesenhausen. The torpedoes were fired from a range of only 750 yards providing no time for evasive action, and struck so closely together as to throw up a single massive water column. As she rolled over to port, her magazines exploded and the ship quickly sank with the loss of over two thirds of her crew.

as the pic is B&W its hard to tell how much flames are in there , but it looks like black smoke makes us the vast majoirty of the explosion.

The solution is plugged exactly from the map readings (map update "on"). I aimed at the bow and midships and the torps hit where I was aiming. The gyro angle takes into account not only the aim point, but the fact that the TGT is moving right to left at 10 knots.

You are able to switch from the mini map to the scope while paused, which is helpful.

The Stadimeter does work, I finally figured it out. There is a black line which appears which you line up with the topmast and you get an accurate range reading.

Has anyone checked out if the sea is modelled as deep as it should be in the fjords of Norway?
I remember in SH3 it was only about 30m deep which was very wrong as it is much much deeper there in real life.

Safe-Keeper
03-01-10, 11:31 AM
Heh, I remember that. Terrain was scaled down not only horizontally, but also vertically, so the deep fjords of Norway weren't even deep enough for a battlecruiser to sink below the waterline. "Herr Kapitan, we're going down! Hold on tight 'til we've hit the bottom... ah, there we go. Now everyone calmly abandon ship."

Sognefjorden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sognefjorden), for an extreme example, has a maximum depth of 1,308 metres. Not exactly something you'd calmly dive your sub into, or expect to survive if your sub is experiencing heavy flooding.

I'll have to do a Norway Inspection when I get this game.

I stood here and just happened to order full speed ahead on the diesels. My jaw dropped to the floor at not even so much the sight as the sound of it. It was eye-wateringly beautiful machinery at work, right there. That one is really something to experience for yourself!
Video please? You are, after all, a video master.

And the game performs really well - these looks come at the exact same FPS figures as SHIV to me, and that is great.
That's good to hear. Maybe I won't need so much of an upgrade after all.

Meanwhile, the terrain is absolutely gorgeous overall:
Yes it is!:sunny:

Recognize that? It's Kiel - so much closer to the real thing!
That is awesome!

I notice there are no bridges, but Hansolo78 has made those for WAC, and they should fit in with a little wedging.

Thanks for the pics. They are the best I've seen so far.

I like the shot of the sub leaving the pen...except there weren't any in 1939. One more thing needing to be fixed.

Could you show us the VIIB in game? I would like to see if the conning tower is modeled correctly. Thanks in advance.
I'm sorry, but did you really have to repost every single picture just to ask one simple question?

I'll qualify that a little. Quoting one picture for the sake of drawing attention to it is perfectly fine. A good example is Neal's post here:

I usually just quote the picture's URL, with a link to the image.

Also, you cuold just post "Re. picture of harbour" or something.

Have you tried "home" or "end"?

Scrolling mouse mid button? The small ring in the mid of the mouse? ;)

I like the new foam, it's very nice when you see it up close.

There are... "sfasticks"? I read no Germans symbols in the game...

I'd be glad to, but actually I've always had technical issues with sound capture, so the work-around I have to use is kind of backwards and takes a lot of time. And 3D sound is just kind of not the same when you put it in video...

But basically for the diesel compartment, think the line "Und hier ist Johann... Unser Gespenst" from Das Boot. Game does a great job of capturing that experience :D

And here's more odds and ends as far as screens - continuing slowly to sea on my first "real" patrol.

These screen shots are wonderful for those of us waiting for the game to arrive, thanks very much for the work you put into composing them. The pictures with the sun on the water in particular are amazing (my desktop wallpaper right now in fact is one of your shots, and another one on my laptop). I also didn't realize the effect the shadows were going to have.

THANK YOU.

Thanks for posting those screens, CCIP. I copied a couple and hosted them on my Photobucket account so I could show 'em to other people. Hope you don't mind (and if you do, just let me know).
