Crazy patrol in April 40...
Managed to sink the Elisabeth battleship by an amazing chance:

After almost 1 hour...still there! Had to finish it with my stern torp.

And 2 days later, i was in very good position for sinking the Glorious Fleet Carrier!!
Bad weather, fog medium, perfect for an attack...
4 torpedoes, 4 hits and no duds! Few minutes later, he was down the sea... so fast i didn’t think of taking picture! But the result:

Chasing me few miles away :) was very lucky to survive.

On side note, for the Glorious Fleet Carrier, i saw all the escorts (around 6 DDs) running...where i was not! :haha:
An other huge chance! Have to say it was a long distance shot though.

Hmm nice, i attacked her once from about 10km, no prep, she is so quick..

I spreaded all 4 eels around her with large overlap and she survived without a scratch somehow. Then i was bombed for about 20h.
Luckily survived too :)

so after countless hours on patrols, I have never come across this before.

after spending about 5 hours in real-time with nothing but seeing coastal enemy trawling fishing boats, I finally stumbled across what I thought was another fellow Uboat, only to discover I had actually found an American Sub down near the coast of Tobruk. of all times I was moving my exterior torpedos inside my uboat when he rolled up like, what's up

was quite the sight, I don't usually use the exterior camera often but I couldn't miss this opportunity.

U-27, a type VIIA U-boat, approaches and inspects the survivors of the Polish small freighter " Moldova ", about 4950 BRT , following its sinking North-North West of the Danzig's bay.
The survivors have been carefully questioned and, after making sure of their good health, some food provisions and fresh water have been left to them.
U-27, now, continues its patrol in search of new enemy targets of opportunity.

Today I had the luck too. I was in south atlantic, neer Freetown and Dakar and 3 of 4 torpedos hit the Queen and she sunk in nearly 10 minutes.
But I forgot to take a screenshot of the sinking queen and have only this one:

They sort of are unlimited - if game is supposed to launch new task force / convoy every x days on specific route it will keep doing it even if you sink entire convoy each time it leaves port. In reality they would run out of ships to send evenually.

I've seen only one naval sim game where ships were really limited - an old DOS pirate sim called Sea Legends (retro gaming enthusiasts go grab this one if you can, seriously). In this game, there was a limited pool of named ships, so if one of them was captured by enemy, it stayed in enemy's hands. If it was sunk, shipyard in its home port started building it again - so there was constant amount of ships at sea but they could change hands to a point where I managed to capture entire Spanish fleet and sell it to French and British :)

:D I imagine these calculation procedures are tedious for most players. Of course, the skipper should not bother himself with this. But in my opinion, besides the fact that you have the opportunity to participate in authentic WW2 procedures, it makes you feel two more things: the first is how time drags on on patrol and it has nothing to do with relaxing in the cabin of a cruise ship ; and second, submarine warfare is not at all romantic and not cinematic and requires high, including intellectual, tension. I think all of this contributes to raising the "ABV level" of the simulation.

Taking this opportunity .. I understand very well how long it can take high-quality and professional work to improve the game and I want to note that I like how the game is changing thanks to modders like you.:up:

I'm blown away by OHII's sinking mechanics

This liberty ship took a single torpedo to the starboard side just before the superstructure
She slowly started sinking of course and had a little list but they managed to stop the flooding just as the water reached the anchors
Or tought they
The water was slowly filling other compartments in the bow and she although excruciatingly slowly, but kept going down
And when the water started washing the deck, she passed the tipping point and the crew abandoned ship.
It took a full hour in game time for the bow to sink but after passing the point of no return, she plunged with the bow rapidly pulling her under raising the propeller out of the water and the stern towering above the sea
She's my current recorder in sinking time totaling in a full hour and 10 minutes to fully sink after the torpedo hit

They have their ups and downs. In general system used by SH5 allows for very realistic sinking mechanics, but in order to make them so damage zones would have to be very, very thoroughly tested ship by ship. And even then, some parts of mechanics are hard to influence by modding, like breaking up which is most common cause of weird behaviour.

...that's part os SH games I always found less than realistic - U-Boat should be inherently less stable firing platform than corvette or destroyer, so it should not be really possible to snipe them from afar without getting obliterated. At least I don't recall any such scenarios from history, though on Pacific US boats did occasionally win duels with some Japanese patrol craft.

All seem to be concentrated in my patrol area. AN7953, as if planned by the campaign maker ?

I will accompany my journey with an artistic narration, reading the chapter "the Bull of Scapa Flow" from Thaddeus V. Tuleja's book "Twilight of the Sea Gods" (1958).

Looking ahead, I want to say that in my sea passage the weather played on the side of history: moving towards Scapa Flow, for all the time I made only one celestial fix with Sun on October 9 and the next few days, until October 13, it was overcast, which made it impossible for celestial navigation (this is also mentioned by Günther Prien in KTB U-47). So I relied on dead reckoning to find the entrance to Holm Sound.
I could not deny myself a trick and before going to Scapa Flow, I found out the coordinates of the navigation light near the coastal defense artillery bunker at the entrance to Holm Sound, but only solely in order to reproduce the historically accurate episode when the position of U-47 was fixed with the Scapa Flow coastal lights, which Prien wrote about in KTB (Prien did it on October 12th, I did it on October 13th before entering Holm Sound)
Going on an 11 hour non-stop trip, I could not know for sure how it would end: my first attempt was interrupted by a spontaneous CTD after 3 hours of playing and then I thought, if I don't get blown up by a mine in Skerry Sound, then CTD will kill me when forcing Skerry Sound.

Of course I'm excited.. but wary that it surely cannot be an allied convoy, or has one slipped through into the Baltic.

I've had this Patroclus Armed Merchant Cruiser buzzing up and down for a few days now.

I've generally ignored it as the sound man reports a warship, to a merchant audio... how would he know it's a warship.. :o

So I decided to remove it out of my patrol area. It took 2x circuits for me to get right up to it.
One thing you never do in war.. is repetition.. makes you predictable.:arrgh!:

Did my patrol area (AMsomething), but somehow the game doesn't credit me.. so dam that.. time to go awandering.
Doing a lot of speed estimation via bow wave size.. getting it within a knot or so. but have to get real close so not to miss.

I must be a magnet for these liners... my last torp on my way home.
Over-estimated speed by at least 1.5 knots, but a bow hit is good as it drives the flooding in.

The ship went nose down until the deck and no further... so I started shelling from behind.
The previous day I tried it amidships on a similar ship and it sent a fireworks display my way. :har: This time I'm careful.

It was still going around at about 5 knots with me hiding in the stern shadow. 31 APs and about 10HE's later (only got about 35% hit rate), it went down in seconds... it was fast.

So.. there I am floating between the minefields off 'Port of Ness' and 'Shegra', waiting for some action.... it's quiet for a week, crew are getting restless, but I get the 'raving' bosun to whip them into shape... Now this Rawalpindi I have no idea what the captain was thinking.. he made no attempt to run off in the other direction.. so I assisted.
This was still afloat and looked like it was not going down... so had to track it and reload.
2nd torp did the trick... and I raced off in the other direction again with only external torps left.

I wonder if the AI in Silent Hunter 5 codes armed merchant cruisers to behave as warships, or merchants? I am pretty sure Silent Hunter 3 has them coded as merchantmen, so they always try to escape from your submarine...

At least according to Names.cfg they are treated like warships, though I'd suppose their AI would behave like capital ship and not an escort (i.e. not try to hunt subs but engage surface ships only). The above might also have been a bug with ship roles in group (my memory is fuzzy on specifics, but there was a problem in SH5 if ship assigned as convoy commander got sunk and there was no fitting candidate to take over commander role).

Very interesting, thanks for that tip. Eventually I plan to mod in armed merchant cruisers of WWI and WWII as full-fledged escorts, because they had depth charges and were supposed to act as submarine hunters (although they were not good at it).

In WWI some big ocean liners also had DC's - one U-Boat got attacked by an American ocean liner off the UK coast late in the war and was knocked around by its depth charges - but escaped.

Late to get to base for re-arming for the Norway invasion.So on the way to Narvik encounter another slow convoy, 'heading' for Trondheim. Latch onto this convoy..
2 ships and 1 damaged on the first night, lag on the port aft quarter during the day time.

Moving in again at dusk, the escorts have left my quarter open so I move in at full speed.
Coming in submerged, flank speed as the escorts are ahead of me. Beaming in on the rear ships. The convoy is in a mess.
Aim at the nearest ship but over estimated the speed. (didn't bother with exactness :hmmm:).
Missed it completely, but hit two ships beyond it. :arrgh!:

Hey everybody..
After this Poland submarine sunk I would like to point out the funny behavior he adopted when he saw me... he fled... without putting up any resistance... I attacked him in this 230 degree port side... so that he can't shoot me with the cannon...he has another problem with these diving oars which seem to be in a precarious position...that's all...here I meet my friends close to the coast...

i do not what know a sunset could look like in the middle of the Atlantic, but we just experienced a pink sunset a day or so ago. it only lasted for a few minutes and then...it was gone.

If you are looking to have this graphic rendering...it's like for 'Sh4' when you had already asked me the question.... it's all just a question of machine settings...each machine is different you can spend some time on it. hours..
But by practicing ... I obtain good results all at least for me..
in addition it's on my WW2 config..soon if I have time I'll move on to the "next gen" so I'm looking forward to seeing it with RTX Nvidia...:sunny::sunny:
