My unavoidable envy requires me to ask how I may get the wooden deck slats and the drool-worthy rust stains. Are these some of your mods? :D

Because have been quickly edited to hide the flaw , the semi transparent conning tower bug ( inmersion killer ) , the screenshot below was taken the same day I got SH5 ( 10 weeks ago ) . the shadows settings have not been tweaked yet and therefore are still stock blurred in this screenshot

I know this was posted a while ago, but I keep looking for the U-boat Memorial outside Kiel/Laboe where it's supposed to be, but I can't find it. Is this in the vanilla game or was it modded in?

I dont know why, in some SH5 single missions (not all of them) The external camera show strange coloured artifacts, I think is something wrong with the files because this happen with just two single mikssions, I think I must reinstall the game

Tonschk, it's probably your graphics card. I don't know what graphics card you're using, but I had the same issues with my ATI 5770. I updated my GPU drivers and the artifacts went away.

Zedi
07-27-10, 02:18 AM
@tonschk: Your sub seems to hover the waves.. how do u manage that? I never saw my ballast tanks out of water, with or without mods.

Regarding the artifacts, I think is the water splash.. got the same artifacts when I enter in the sub and I know that should be water. So I'm pretty sure is related to the card...

Unfortunately when I save the screenshot , the screenshot become with the shadows almost black , but in the normal game the shadows are not so dark (I have no idea how to avoid this), the sub in the previous screenshot is temporarily a bit tilted to the right , this make the ballast a bit more exposed, this are my current enabled MODS, I tweaked the external shadows to this values.

Edit: I should say that this is random on my PC

Dude, u don't have UHS and IRAI on.. shame on you :DL Anyway, I still can't understand how come ur sub is so visible....

And save the shot with Ctrl-F11, not PrtScrn.

26 metres from the bottom of the sea in the bay of narvik, being chased by a destroyer. I sunk an entire task force, including a battleship except one last destroyer which is now chasing me. I pushed my VIIC/41 u-boat down to almost 250 metres without any problems at all. I could almost touch the bottom of the sea.

At 270 metres in the north atlantic. Endless pit of water, nowhere near the bottom of the sea.

If you are lucky, you can find yourself with something like this
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/4194/niceone.jpg

Must say that it was a semi-unescorted convoy (just two escorts) and even it seems incredible, they had no main guns, unarmed (just a few shots from machineguns passed over my boat).

Someone left the hatch open :DL

It's even better than that. I opened it, as I forgot we'd been submerged for a couple of hours when approaching enemy port (Weseruebung picture taking task), till I emerged the outside seemed like a normal air + clouds... then I panicked that we had mistakenly surfaced as I suddenly remembered we should be hidden in the water. So I rushed outside, only to see the exterior turn green upon me leaving the hatch. This picture was taken in first person view, not with the external camera.

On the first photo a destroyer is running backwards. It's one of 4 destroyers from a HK group that had hunted me for 6 hours after called by a convoy I attacked (at least 6 hours - I stopped watching them as they were still looking for me). 2 of the 4 destroyers were running backwards all that time, making me wonder a lot about what could be the cause of that behaviour.

On the third photo you see a DC run. No DCs were being dropped though... :D

You've been having real fun then :DL

External camera, which I never used before, may be fun for a few times, but after 2-3 days of abusing it I discovered it completely kills the immersion. Switching it off after current patrol - the screenshots I took were not worth losing what all the game is about. :)

EDIT: One more until I can:

Nah. It's too tempting when feeling lazy - let's check the flag on this ship fast, why waste so much fuel only to chase 90% chance German ship? (Norway, May '40). I can refuse the temptation, but in the first place I don't even want to be tempted. :88)

You're right, you can see through them in game, it shouldn't be like that though.

The Americans call them 'limber holes'. I don't know what the Germans call them. Their purpose is to allow water to flow freely between the outer hull and the pressure hull. Since the pressure hull sits low within the framework of the outer hull you can indeed see the pressure hull through them, and from the correct angle see right through to the other side.

I cheated. Way back in 1970, while I was in the navy, I got to visit an old fleet boat in Long Beach. One of the things that shocked me was the realization that I could see the water beneath my feet, right through the holes in the deck. I asked about it then.

On the other hand you're right that you shouldn't be able to see through all of them, or even most of them. There is a lot of stuff in there, including the pressure hull itself. You should see it blocking the view. If that's not there then the game is indeed missing something.

Each time you press Ctrl + F11 a screenshot is made and stored with timestamp in your main game folder. You can make as many as you want (provided you have disc space).

Pressing PrintScreen only temporarily stores the image in your clipboard - unless you paste it to a graphic program andsave manually, you lose it after you press PrtScr again or just Ctrl + C.

Bear in mind the screenshots are captured in bmp format which is a much larger file size than jpeg format.

I would consider getting a screen capture programme, there are some free ones out there, I personally use fraps but that is not free.

A screen capture programme allows you to choose where the pictures are to be stored and in what format.

Im assuming that for most people it looks much better in game? because some of these screens dont seem to do the game justice eye candy wise. Not in offense to any one who is barely running it on their system because of barely meeting minimum requirements lol It could also be that some are F-ing huge in size too (pictures) but some others do do this game justice. I cant wait to get a sweet rig to run this game now! I may have to start with SH3 and 4 first though until a Graphics and possibly a CPU upgrade. :shifty::D

Out of fairness I wasn't going to say anything until I could actually play the game, but that lovely string of shots by Abd Von Mumit forced it out of me. I have two complaints about the foam, and it shows up in every screenshot, no matter what system it was taken on.

1. The bubbles are awfully big. I could be wrong, but I don't remember ever seeing bubbles that big.

2. The foam is much darker than the bow wave. It should be the same color, and the bright white of the bow wave is correct, not the darker foam.

Little things, I know, but they jump out at me every time.

Unfortunately I feel just the opposite. I love Das Boot but the exterior shots are so obviously models it drives me crazy sometimes. In the scenes of the boat running on the surface the foam is very much out of scale to what it looks like coming from a real 800-ton ship.

then i strongly suggest not being so critical about movies.

Some people dont even like movies at ALL cause they arent realistic. Unless its a documentary, then respectfully (and not directed at you steve, just so you know) to shut up and enjoy the ACTUAL movie. U-571 was fantastic movie. Realistic? not as much a some would hope but so what? The only Blatant stray from realism, pretty much the only one at all, was the scene where they destroyed the resupply sub. it was still a FANTASTIC movie. If people want it to be so dam real then why dont you build a time machine and go back to 1943. Then you just steal a sub and Bam your getting all the damn realism in the world. I'm not critical of movies at all, generally speaking. Unfortunately when it's a subject I know something about myself it's hard not to notice what is painfully obvious. I cut Das Boot a lot of slack because back in 1982 they didn't have CGI. I'm not critical, it's just something I notice, just as I do with Run Silent, Run Deep, because of the obvious juxtaposition between real footage and models.

The movie lost me the moment Harvey Keitel shouted "Dive" and rang the klaxon three times. The signal for a dive is two, surface is three. You might argue that it's a very minor thing, but it shows that they did exactly zero homework. After decades of similar movies getting it right, why would they suddenly get it wrong? Laziness, nothing more.

And it goes downhill from there. The story is a concocted perversion of history. The things they pull off are so blatantly over-the-top that it might have worked had it been billed as a comedy, except none of it was funny. As a movie and nothing more, sure it works. But so does The Conqueror. But it wasn't made as just a movie, it was claimed as a movie about history.

Did the subs go 40 knots? did they sprout wings and propellers and start flying? no. what they did in the movie is possible entirely. You seem to be forgetting a critical element though. its a MOOOOOOVIIIEE. Of course hollywoods gonna put a little pizazz and awe into it. if it was anything like SH4 patrols, and im talking NORMAL patrols, (i.e the same old boring hours and hours of boredom, the occasional merchant ect.), it wouldnt be a very good movie. The uboat couldve done everything they said it to do, but its improbable, not impossible. For hollywood, the 1/10000000 chance something would happen is GOLD to them. I would love to see a movie where they literally strain EVERY part and aspect of their sub to the breaking point, and come out alive. overcoming the odds FTW. thats what U571 was about. a very VERY eventful and interesting and awesome movie. if they REALLY did zero homework, they wouldve made their sub sprout wings, and make their sub have the space and roominess of a battleship, and take on 8 escorts without flinching.

Are you HONESTLY going to let 1 extra Ring and a few minor things ruin and ENTIRE movie? Come on. If everything was down to the number, itd pretty much be a documentary. documentaries are entirely different from movies. Plus, these movies werent made for extremist sub worshippers such as yourself. its a mvoie most of the general public can sink their teeths into. Although some would most likely through the whole movie, CONSTANTLY ask "Whats the ballast tanks" or "whats flank speed" or "why cant they fire the torpdoes?". ugghhhhh. that would be excrutiating. Das boot, U571 and Other great classics were wonderful. They were pretty much on the money, by missing minor aspects but SO WHAT. its a movie, and you MUST MUST MUUUUST understand that.

Karasunx
09-15-10, 12:28 AM
The problem I found with U-571 was even for a movie it was pretty laughable. I think it took itself way too seriously as it crammed every sub-movie cliché in it's run time. That's cool if you liked it, but you can't fault others for not liking it. I'm sure there are people who think Das Boot, Hunt for Red October, or K19 were bad movies. It's a matter of preference.

Anyways, back on the thread topic. Here are a few shots from my last patrol before I got my new VIIB (technically again, I need to stop restarting the campaign).

I also think that U-571 was more like a comedy, not something to take in serious. The typical action hollywood movie built on a cheap entertaining script. My disappointment was to see good actors playing in it, this was not a movie for Keitel, more like for Bruce Willis or Will Smith.

You're trying to turn this into an argument, and it's not. For someone with no experience it might be a good movie. For someone who's been there it's a bad joke. I didn't go to see a good action movie, or a good movie, I went to see a movie about ships and submarines, and in that context it was a great disappointment.

if it was anything like SH4 patrols, and im talking NORMAL patrols, (i.e the same old boring hours and hours of boredom, the occasional merchant ect.), it wouldnt be a very good movie
Actually that is exactly what makes the 5-hour uncut version of Das Boot a great movie for fans of the genre.

No, it's a movie about a submarine, and they managed to get enough details wrong to make any sailor cringe. And I don't say you muuuuuust understand that, because I don't expect you to. As I said in the thread where you ranted about reality, if you haven't been there you can't understand. They didn't make it for me, and that's okay. As you say, they made it for people who know nothing of the subject. But for me is sucked. Period.

Sailor Steve, I'm curious what you think of a movie like Down Periscope or Operation Petticoat. U-571 was bad because it tried to be serious and was anything but. Where as Down Periscope was a comedy and didn't have to strive for realism as much, or did it just make it even more cringe inducing to you?

Hard to judge for me. I haven't seen Operation Petticoat since I was a kid, but I do have fond memories of it. I only just saw Destination Tokyo for the first time in maybe fifty years, and was surprised that I liked it more than I thought I would, since I know full well that no US submarine ever tried to sneak into Tokyo Bay at any time, let alone succeeded as an advance scout for the Doolittle raid in 1942.

I'm afraid I haven't really given Down Periscope a chance, since it came out at a bad time in my life and I never saw it. Your judgement on that is probably better than mine.

My problem is that I love history and I love ships. From the standpoint of sheer moviemaking Pearl Harbor is arguably better than Tora! Tora! Tora!. But one is a movie about the actual events and people and the other is way-too-long love story laid on top of actual events, and if that is the context then Pearl Harbor takes a poor back seat to From Here To Eternity. The love story is bad and the history is bad, so there is nothing much good to be said for it on either count.

I never said that U-571 was a bad action flick. I don't like action films enough to make that judgement. It may be better than I give it credit for, but I can't get past the garbage that passes for procedure.

I also apologize for tying up the screenshots thread. But anyone can scroll past this, and it will be long gone in a day or two.

I don't think anyone really minds considering how often other threads go off topic and then come back. Thank you Steve, though, for the reply.

Here's one I posted in the Photo Realistic thread, but since it's unaltered aside from size and jpeg format I figure it could go here too.

Very cool sunset pic, 7thSeal. Are you sailing with an AI sub in the campaign or is it from one of the single missions?

Its during a campaign, just crossed paths with him after finishing up a patrol and was curious as to where he was headed. :)
