You know what I noticed on the first two pictures in this last post?? The water looks beautiful, the spray and the sub look great, and the environ looks awesome. But when it comes to the foam, it looks like all of the pics were real pics and then someone went into photoshop and 'put' the white foam there. Is there anymods that make that foam look better?? Just Curious

I'm really impressed with these great sceenies. How the heck do I get my camera to focus on my boat? I know in SH4, in external view you just go to next target. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Amazing shots Zedi.

Cool that D-day is actually in the game, if you know what I mean.

Also did you get the Queen Mary? :stare:

Zedi
03-31-11, 12:22 AM
QM is from the historical/single mission, its actually a bonus mission from u-play upon completing the whole campaign. Posted the pic for further reference, to show people how QM looks like in the game. You will never find her in the campaign, only some wannabe QM.

D-Day is in the extended campaign mod, Open Horizons. The convoys are historical accurate regarding the route and ship numbers, the largest convoys ever. And when these convoys meet approaching Normandy, your hydrophone will crash, sonar guy commit suicide and if your rig is not powerful enough to handle so many ships, you may also experience some ctd.

I had no guts to get even close to any of these convoys, skipped the mission. But seeing all those landing ships filled with tanks, trucks and guns it was a really very impressive sight. To bad that we dont have zeppelins modeled in the game yet. I can imagine what the germans felt seeing this huge fleet approaching the coast. God bless the souls of those who lost their life there, they will be eternal remembered.

North Sea, clear weather, stock game with IRAI. At visual contact, she change course and head in my direction at full speed. Jumped over the tower and maned the deck gun by myself: "bring it on biatch!" Just when she got in my gun sight, she dive. Got scared as I was expecting a salvo, so I jumped into the hole and ordered crash dive. But seems like she was out of ammo, so was time to kick back:

Now where I want to be is
where I want to be is ...
Under the sea, is where I'll be
No talking 'bout the rain no more
I wonder what thunder will mean, when only in my dream

Under the sea, down here with me I find I'm not the only one
Who ponders what life would mean if we hadn't been
so disappointed in the sun

Guys, I've encountered the U Class Submarine for the first time when my first patrol in Norway. I fired the first torpedo, it missed and this sub dove. Then, he went straight at me.

(ignore the mouse pointer :O: )

I fired the second torpedo, based on my guesswork and followed the torpedo. At the right moment, It went straight to the conning tower (Not bad for guessing!) and it exploded!

Not unrealistic!

"Ali" Cremer survived a huge damage of U-333īs conning tower;)http://s4.postimage.org/1uwcqr8mc/u333.jpg (http://postimage.org/image/1uwcqr8mc/)

And check the story of U-566. When the commander of U-566 surfaced in the darkness to assess the damage, he saw more closely resembled a pile of wreckage than his boatīs conning tower. The allied ship had almost flattened the bridge superstructure.

Well... That's not the worst thing.

After I gave up and left the area where the U-Class was, I went to patrol the Navik area. One of my watchmen spotted a submarine and however, that submarine is the same U-Class submarine that I blew the conning tower off. This monster has regenerated its conning tower like new! :o

I'm scared.

Since its second group U class modelled there was only 12 ever built
Shame the devs didnt model the 3rd group / V class instead, there was about 30 of those produced and just about all of them served in the Med out of the Malta and Alexandra sub bases. Since their small size made them inadequette for ATO and PTO operations.
Think the S-class was the most mass produced WW2 Royal Navy sub.

What about the factory smoke? I think I have missed it's progress, does it really work? It's a small detail, but the harbours will look so much better with that.

Where the heck is he? I found out what a Geordie Cowboy is!!!!

the iis from a recent news article:

Cole speaks with what's known in the U.K. as a Geordie accent. Particular to Newcastle, many from the region use words such as "bairn" instead of "child," "hinny" instead of "woman," and "me" instead of "my." Intonation tends to rise at the end of sentences, while vowel sounds tend to shift in such as way that the word "brown" ends up sounding more like "brune."

Finally there's a liberal helping of words such as "pet," "lass" and "like"....

The "light shafts" are drawn only when the sun is in view and doesn't have any effect whatsoever on surfaces (like actually lighting them).

Sorry for the technical details, that's a great picture :)

every submarine film worth its salt has the ubiquitous caged light bulb breaking and high pressure valve scenes. our film is no different. unfortunately we didnt have any extra light bulbs at the house so we stole the bulb from the laundry room (sorry kate) and our "high pressure" garden hose was a bit lackluster......but we had fun anyway. cheers.

Hello Zedi! I almost did not survive it! The reason was not in a duel with the US and british escort, but in constant CTDīs... I was mad! I had to save the position after 3 minutes!:Kaleun_Mad: Famous and great D-Day traffic (I saw many battleships, fully loaded cargo ships, transporters...)was already too much for my graphics card.

I sank on this "Feindfahrt" 7 ships (on the D-Day 4), the last one was this battleship North Carolina.

I could not fulfill the D-Day mission, because I sank on the D-Day 4 ships (Nort Carolina battleships, destroyer Somers class, 2 transporters Middeleton class), not 5.

I was glad when it was seventh June and disappeared this huge traffic (this traffic on the D-Day in your campaign Open Horizons is greaat! Only my PC has problems with it...). My computer functioned on the 7. 6. again normally.

Zedi
06-30-11, 03:24 PM
Hm.. 5 ship is much on D-Day, should be 2 or even 1. Im glad that you managed to hit even 1, I know that those convoys are huge and will use at max your PC.. but the convoys are made on historical accuracy, even the historical names are used.

The new version from Das Campaign will be much more complicated and hard to accomplish as now we have mines and the english channel is sealed starting June. Again, great shot Josef, bravo

Now reading your D-Day mission "readme"-

Sink_at_least_4_ships_from_convoys_heading_to_Fran ce

Hmmmm:hmmm: I sank 4 ships on the D-Day from the convoys heading France:

1) Angriffstransporter Middeleton /GB/ - 6. 6. 06.39
2) Zerstörer Somers /GB/ - 6. 6. 06.44
3) Panzerladungsschiff /USA/ - 6. 6. 07.04
4) Schlachtschiff North Carolina /USA/ - 6. 6. 07.58

... and yet I failed this mission... Strange...:nope:

I believe your upcoming mod will be absolutely a great campaign! I enjoy with my U-552 crew now over half of the year your Open Horizons my friend!:salute:

Looking forward to more difficult and realistic campaign!

i have never been accused of being serious. ill take that as a compliment! lol. the production crew got a bit side tracked with summer activities and then i managed to get pneumonia. i wasnt feeling too creative for about a month but im on the mend now. we need just a few more scenes for the "epic" ending. with sh5 the smoke and fire crushes my poor computer. i have to turn the graphics and resolution way down so the image dosnt "stutter". maybe someday when i grow up i can afford a legitimate computer but until then we will take what was issued and make the best of it. i also want to experiment filming underwater with a bluescreen. i have a crazy friend with a pool....and a refrigerator. im sure that project will require at least 6 rolling rocks. ill post a clip if we come up with anything interesting. ok "monkey rum". i hope you are well. keep jammin'.

"In Pursuit of U-603"
Here it is. At long last we have finished our submarine epic. It has truly been a journey. A fun journey.
Quinn (my son) has been an active and engaged trooper throughout the whole process. My poor wife has put up with giant blue and green screens around the house and property, garden hoses in the cellar, aquarium tanks in the kitchen and countless other household disruptions.
We have utilized Ubisoft's unmodified "Silent Hunter" 3, 4 and 5 simulators for our background images and then superimposed the actors into the film. This art form is very time consuming. I did some math one evening and it took us 35 minutes to come up with 1 second of film. Ouch. It is no wonder that it has taken us over a year to create this film.
We worked on it a little here and a little there. If we got bored or frustrated with the project we just walked away from it for a bit.
The finished film is 18 minutes long so I'm sure we have at least a couple hundred hours involved in production. I bet the actual figure is higher than that due to deleted scenes and hours of experimentation with different filming and chroma keying techniques.
In the end its not about the film but about spending quality time with my son and planting a creative seed that I hope will blossom. I often wonder where I would be in life if I had no creative outlet. Jail probably.
Quinn has learned so much about submarines and WW II during this project. I would be willing to bet that not many other seven year old boys know as much about displacement, periscope optics, lead acid batteries, hydrophones, sonar, hydrostatics vs hydrodynamics and torpedo trajectory just to name a few of the many subjects we have studied.
Our budget for the film was zero dollars other than purchasing the video games. If we didn't have something we needed, we built it out of stuff we already had. "Adapt and survive" is our film making motto.
We spent many summer Saturday afternoons in the back yard playing with garden hoses and cameras. Great inexpensive family fun.
Now its time to clean out our hard drive, defrag the computer and plan our next blockbuster hit. Any ideas? I'm thinking something with helicopters.
My only hope is as Quinn grows older he will view this film and remember the process fondly and be reminded of how crazy his father is.

Historical notes about the U-603:
The U-603 (603 is our telephone area code) is not just any submarine. It can instantly change from a type VII to a type VIIB U-boat and back again. It also has the ability to change into an American Gato class sub. Please do not ask how this is done. We are sworn to secrecy.
The size of the U-603 was scaled down due to the smaller stature of its crew.
That's our story and we are sticking to it.
We hope you enjoy watching the film as much as we enjoyed making it.
We would appreciate any feedback you have, pro or con.
Thank you for letting us be a part of your wonderful forum.
"Gods speed and good hunting"
Cheers.

Absolutely brilliant! :sunny:
The acting talent is fantastic. The direction is superb. The cinematogropher is a genius. The musical director is to be commended.

Not only that, but the enemy destroyer turns into a cruiser and then into KMS Bismarck! Gotta love it!

I do have one historical nit to pick, though: The torpedoes have 24 rivets around the front cap, and everybody knows that that type of torpedo had only 22 rivets. All that work and one little detail ruins the whole thing! :nope: :O:

:DYes - those two dropped bombs were direct hits. When I next hit the save screen key it was was the spinny death scene.

This was my second shortest patrol ever - the shortest was during the making of harbour pilot:oops:

That's okay. I think I may hold the record for the shortest SH3 career ever. I shelled a merchant from too close and it exploded, taking me with it. The killer is that this was during deck gun training at the Academy.

I think we've all done that, and the classic not asking the nav to follow your patrol line - straight in to the harbour wall! :yeah:

That's one I'll never be guilty of. I always leave the pier at 1 knot, stick to the 5-knot speed limit within harbor confines, and navigate by eyeball until I'm in the open.

:rotfl2:

I had a pretty short career (http://www.kylania.com/sh3/shortestcareer.jpg) before too! I forgot that I'd tapped the rudder after coming out of Kiel Canal so thought I was still on the waypoints and jumped to 128x TC to get out into the ocean. Nope. Ended up ramming into the far shore. Poor little IID.

So I was tracking a merchant contact I had and was in the sprint on the surface phase of it when the fog cleared a bit and my watch crew calls out a contact close! 7000m off my starboard side is a seven destroyer hunter killer group!? Yikes! Double yikes because I'm at 48% hull and not sure how low I can go.

So I drop to 50m and silent running, turning away from where I'm hearing the warships. They keep tracking off to the side, sounds like everything is perfect! So I pop up to periscope and take a peek. Sure enough the group is heading away, but what my sonar guy didn't tell me is one of the destroyers is heading right at me!

I drop down to 70m (pushing it!) and turn kinds towards him hoping to mask my props. He spins around a bit, but then finally heads back to his pack.

After popping up to periscope again I take a look and sure enough he's on his way home. So at this point I decide to external camera it and watch him rejoin. Imagine my surprise when while following him to his group I notice there's way more than seven ships there... two HK groups in the same spot! :o This new group is heading right towards me! :wah:

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/8692/crisscrosse.jpg

I just stop and wait. :nope: They came pretty close, medium range according to the hydrophone, but passed just by me. Phew!

From an earlier patrol... This poor fisherman wandered too close to Wilhelmshaven and a local flyboy was kind enough to demonstrate why doing so was a poor choice from that captain.
