It isnt your average war FPS. It's not an simulator either, but something in between. Run & gun tactic will get you killed in a blink of an eye, but a slow, more cautious approach will get you far.
The game world is pretty big, there's 2 maps, Rahmani being a small island with small airfield and one small town. Then there's the main map, Sahrani, which is HUGE (http://community.bistudio.com/wikidata/images/d/d1/ArmA_Sahrani_Map_Large.jpg). That's where most of online gaming + the main SP campaign takes place. Also, there's no loading in different areas, it's all streaming.
You get quite a big selection of arms you can have, from pistols to assault rifles to RPGs and Stingers. Same goes for the vehicles, you can drive everything you find. From a military motorcycle to a jet.
Going online is the best thing about ArmA, you find pretty mature ppl playing it and usually they work together. Here's a good example how cool it is, when ppl work together:

:damn: but its so hard to find someone decent to have some FUN with.
every game I have been in (very few, got booted 90% of the time because of my Stats...''Newb'' class...I hate STATS with games)
and when I find a game, teams are mostly so inbalanced (High stats vs Low stats, yep threat was if we didnt move to the other team it was a Boot) game ends in 5 minutes.
so the screenshots of my CoH games is versus AI teams
so I,m just looking for a good battle, I dont care If I win or Lose, the longer and harder it lasts the better.

Been having an utter blast with it so far. Have played the pen-and-paper RPG, so I automatically bought 'Redemption' when it came out. This is probably why I didn't get around to trying 'Bloodlines' until now...friend told me it was 'completely different and more of an RPG' than the first game, and I picked it up off Half.
Been one of those 'just do one more thing before I go to bed...' games.

I actually prefer GT Legends since I like old, snarly cars to new, screaming cars, but I've been getting more into it lately. A wheel is much more necessary with GTR though...cars are soooo friggggggin' fassssssst. Keyboard just doesn't cut it a lot of the time, though I'm managing.

Dont expect much from it ''Sim-like''
but its fun to play as the game has a nice variety in the ''career mode?'' (some piramide thing where you have to work your way up to the top) you gain money when you win races which makes you able to buy better vehicules. the harder you set the game, the more money you gain winning a race.
you have categories like:
Buggy races, pick up rally, face-to-face, 4x4 rally, FW drive Rally.
truck rally, some classic catergories
I just like to race in the dirt and drift around in corners trying to keep the bloody car in control :p
I say its a fun rally game, to enjoy.

Sounds like I'll have to try a demo then. I can deal with arcadey if there's a bunch of other elements I like, especially as a 'quick game' kind of thing.
Then you`ll probably like it, I guess. A couple of the guys I race in a rFactor league say they are having fun with it as a time killer now and then. Quick game there is for sure. I only tried it for about 30 minutes, as it was bundled with a graphics card i bought.
I am really "nazi" when it comes to racing games, they have to be hardcore. No driving aids and lots of settings to adjust.:D
What I CAN say about DIRT, is that it has nice graphics (the bloom is overdone, but ptobably moddable) and great crash modelling.

Some driving aids required here, as I have no wheel.:D Looking for a good but cheap one though, as there's stuff you just can't do right without one (sweepers, for instance).
Most of the good ones are cheap, since none of them are new.
My list of great sims:
GTR (FIA GT 2003 Season)
GTR2 (FIA GT 2003-2004)
rFactor (Nothing at all almost, but tons - literally - tons of free downloadable content, and the sim with the best mod groups)
GT Legends (You have that one, no?)
Race (2006 WTCC season + other classes)
Race 07 (2006-2007 WTCC, Minis, F3000, Caterhams, Radicals, Formula BMW)
Look for GTR2 (you will find this one very cheap), rFactor (around 40$), Race 07 (40$ on steam).
The best bet is rFactor, though. You will find almost any car for it, just have a look here:

You wont be disappointed. SS was like remade Jagged Alliance to me (tho, JA still kicks everyone's butt and wipes the floor with them). And the destructable enviroment gives a whole new aspect to it; strong enemy stronghold in a room? No worries, go to the next one, shoot a hole into the wall and toss a nade in! "I'd normally be happy to work with you, but not as long as I have to team with sanctimonious jerks like Sondergard."
"I'm not psychotic, I'm just passionate about my work."
"Flowers? Who would be sending me flowers?"
Yeah, Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 both kicked so much booty. Just soooo mannny things you could do RL that would work in the game, too, though with many of the same disadvantages you'd have if you tried it RL. And the dialogue!
As to Silent Storm, I like the sci-fi WWII idea. So many games these days are in the same setting we've seen 1,000 times, with no variation, no new spin...a little semi-steampunk '40's action sounds awesome (Vacum-tube punk?).

Yup, I think the publisher totally f-ked up the communication and advertising for the game back then. I only heard about it by accident 2 years after the release, and I've read a review saying that the publisher messed up and "forgot" to send test copies to PC magazines etc. Shame since good turn based tactical games are pretty much a rarity on PC.
Aye, this true. I think it was the same for JA2 back then.

My favorites RTS. I wish if the Homeworld 3 really happen one day, it will walk in the path of those legends.I never did finish Homeworld 2. One was great. 2 Felt like a rehash at the beginning and it didn't have the no where else to run type of feel.

The best rally sim is still Richard Burns Rally. No loss, though, as its really great even if its a bit old.

The 21st Army Group was advancing towards Caen when they suddenly met heavy resistance in form of german infantry supported by light armor.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/325/relic00024jt5.jpg
The british troops soon crumbled under the pressure of the fierce german counterattack, and retreated across the river to put up a forward base of operations.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/1628/relic00025yl9.jpg
To avenge their fallen comrades, the british artillery pounded the german positions, causing much damage to the germans, but with few casualties. Both sides stayed on their side of the river during the night while preparing for the coming battle....

The next morning the British forces tried a breach across the river. They were expecting armor support from the beach the next day, but the British commander decided to attack without them. So the soldiers of the 59th Reconnaissance Regiment pressed the attack. With them were a handful of Bren Carriers and a small number of Stuart Light tanks.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1708/relic00031gz0.jpg
Some grim sights were reported that day. Lieutenant Richard Carson was caught on fire by an enemy flawthrower unit. He panicked and ran towards the reserves. He died of his wounds before any medical aid could be given.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3374/relic00036va5.jpg
The British troops fought for hours, but no breakthrough could be guaranteed by noon. As the minutes turned to hours, more and more cries for help could be heard. Corporal James Daneeka can be seen running towards the frontline, to recover any fallen troops. His actions on this day and the following two would later lead to his receiving of the Victoria Cross. Photo by war corospondent Arthur McWatt.

Another photo by Arthur McWatt. This shows a Stuart Light Tank engaging a german Sturmgeschütz IV, a vain attempt to push back the german defenders long enough to ensure a breakthrough. On the picture is also Lance Corporal Thomas Dreedle, running for cover still carrying his Bren light machine gun.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/8119/relic00045bn0.jpg
At 1700 Hours, there was still no breakthrough in sight, and forward troops reported that a German Panzer Division had entered the fierce battle. Decision was taken to once again retreat, while the 61st Field Regiment, Royal Artillery would give the retreating troops cover.
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5902/relic00047sa8.jpg
The germans considered to continue the push and break the british line, but when greeted with immense artillery shelling from the boys of the 61st, they retreated back to their lines, and once again made ready to continue the bloody fighting the next day....

I heard Lagus should be coming back to it's full force shortly. We had a great start for the campaign and could really push the Allies to west. It took one night to change it all, I think we lost 5-7 towns that night. The Allies got a huge momentum out of it and we've been retreating ever since.

Early next morning the british commander sent out patrols in the surrounding swamps to see if there was any weaker spot in the german lines. Apart from some empty bunkers, nothing could be found. But the ground was to soft and wet for any tanks to advance over it.

More bad news for the boys of the 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division, came when they got word that the armor support was delayed, and wouldn't make it until earliest next day. Major L.O Lyne decided to hold position and dig in until the tanks arrived. When the germans realised this, they pressed the attack, trying desperately to crush the british forces. The germans had some extra surprises up their sleeves...

Anyway, I was about to reinstall MIITW and playing this Stainless Steel mod
Now I have finally got the Scots under control, I think. William Wallace and a huge army came looking for freshly overrun York, but fortunately my spies saw this, so I had a similarly sized force waiting in the forrest, dispatched from Nottingham and merged with my in-the-field-army.
When Braveheart attacked the city my main force charged from the rear. The battle was chaotic and bloody, heavy losses on both sides. The deciding factor was a lucky mangonel shot that killed Wallace. After this I have reclaimed Canaeveron (?), fixed the heavily damaged Nottingham and added York to the English Empire.
This cost me all my gold, so hard times are ahead. I really hope the Scots dont have a huge army hidden up north, because right now licking wounds and keeping the Irish out of Dublin, and keeping the Norwegians away from ... eh ... Norway is more than enough.
I love this mod! (Stainless Steel 6.1)

True that, but I wasn't all too interested in waging war againts them. I formed the alliances just to make sure they'll be good while I'm busy in the west.
I had quite a battle tonight. The Teutonic ORder emerged from northern Europe and headed south, until they reached Constantinople. I guess they thought that the great city would make a good Capital city for them, and it would. They seiged the city with two full armies, against a full garrison inside the city walls. I sent an army to help the defence. Two years into the siege they attacked, and I quite litterally crushed them, both armies got annihilated, including the grand master of the order and his successor, so I guess that's the end of the Teutonic Knights. No picutres I'm afraid:nope:

What's new in 6.1? I still use 6.0, but just because I'm trying to wrap up a campaign as the Spanish. I've taken Iberia and chased the Moors to Libya. I was excommunicated as the Pope told me to leave Portugal alone. They had but one settlement left and I had it under seige, so I decided to end it. Oh, well the Pope died and was replaced by one of my cardinals
I dont know, Lobsterboy, the last time I played SS it was 5.0.
This huge battle decided (I think) the battle for Britain. The largest armies on the isles clashed north of York.
My main force was a bit heavy on the artillery, and the backup force was delayed. This forced me to circle the wagons and hope I could blow them away. The insane amount of heavy Scottish infantery made me groan, though.

He does give me warnings, but since he (and every single Cardinal) is from my own Kingdom, he just sticks with the warnings. And IF I get excommunicated, then I'll just..erm...."persuade" him to bring me back into his herd;)

I actually invaded the Papal States once as England after I got excommunicated when I attacked France
I actually posted this in another thread, but when the new pope got elected (Following the untimely death of the last one), he exclaimed that "The flames of eternal damnation" are too good for me
Lemme find that screenshot...
EDIT:

Well it happened.
When Norway was gone, all that was left around the baltic to be worried about was Poland. So I attacked the last provinces they had, Mr. Pope said "Get the F*CK OUT!" I said "No it's true! I DID smash Poland to scrap metal!" And he excommunicated me....:stare:
Anyway, I sent a diplomat to Rome.
-Did you expect us to be happy to see you!?
-Well........*brings up a huge amount of money on the table*....Yes, as a matter of fact...

I loved that style of game! I played that game a little but never beat it. Instead I played its cousin, Dino Crisis a lot. Both games are nearly identical with the style of gameplay. It's just raptors can move faster than zombies! I always thought the zombies in RE sounded like drunkin, rutting bucks. :o:oops::rotfl: Dino Crisis was VERY suspenseful. That was the first game that really had me on the edge of my seat. I played Dino Crisis 2 but liked 1 better. I was SO hoping they would have carried on the story after DC 2, but instead they turned it into some space mutant dino crap. Up until now I had completely forgotten about DC 1 and 2. I may have to dust off the PS2 and load them up again.

End of Campaign #45 GHC Change of CiC Cerimony (WWIIOL - Battleground Europe)
The Axis CiC (commander in chief), Callsign: KMS, has retired at the end of Campaign #45. He led us to well deserved victory! The campaign ran 88 days, one of the longest maps in the history of WWIIOL. I attended the change in command cerimony and took some pics.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/2879631171_b57c8b4063_o.jpg
AHC (Allied High Command) were invited to the cerimony as well. They entered our airspace at approximately 7km above the deck in a JU transport, and jumped. It took them a while to parachute to us at that height, lol, but they made a pretty impressive landing right on top of the platform where the GHC was! They exited the platform afterwards, crossing the lines to much cheering and saluting, and then head to the hanger...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2879631023_075d73d356_o.jpg
We were ordered not to fire our weapons, in general, before the cerimony was over. But especially not to fire at our allied guests when they arrived, as they were under invitation. Of course, that was too much to ask. :rotfl:And had a rather embarassing conclusion for GHC. One or two fiesty Axis soldiers engaged and eliminated the poor Allies as they moved towards the hanger. Pretty stupid, actually. If you look at the platform screenshot with the tags on, you can see a game manager there... people were warned not to get out of line. Not sure what happened to the culprits, but GHC sent the Allies our apologies for the incident...
Bodies by Hanger in the distance, as an Officer looks over in disbelief... and a close up of two of the allied corpses:

The cerimony closes with with a load of "fireworks." Everyone lights up the area with frag and smoke grenades, lots of small arms fire and even the planes and armored vehicles on the airfield let loose their guns.

95 is about the best mod on rF right now. The 08 mod is a combination of 3 different ones model/texture wise, with our own physics for league. Certainly not the quality of what CTDP 06 will be though. Have you seen the WIP of 89?

DCG is the "Dynamic Campaign Generater", runs on the same principle as the one they did for CFS2 and the IL2 series (Though not by the same designer) You start off by buying a certain amount of units, and as you complete missions, you are awarded more money to buy more units, whether Infantry or Armor. Each battle is different, and the campaign can last as long as you want. Can start at 3 different times, early war period, middle or late war.
I have it, but haven't got it installed yet, but sounds interesting. You can read more about it here-

In the late summer of 1642, civil war wages across the British Isles. People must choose a side. We have the Parliamentarians and the Royalists. The latter soon captured Plymoth with a surprise attack at the western tip of the country. Now the Parliamentarians are building up their forces across the lands to crush the spoiled King who tries to overrule the Parliament! But traitors are everywhere. Suddenly word reaches London that the Earl of Stanford has turned his back to them, and now serves noone but himself. Immediately, a smaller force is sent out from Taunton Castle to deal with this rebellious fool.
Brave as he was, he wouldn't last long without firearms.

What mod is that?
