What is SubsimMachFest? It is our very own short film festival! Welcome to the second Annual Subsim Machinima Short Video Festival. Contenders for the awards will be posted on http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest I'm looking for the best 7 minute machinima videos containing a submarine that you can create.

Being Subsim we need a theme for our vid fest and of course it is submarines. It doesn't matter if you don't use a sub sim to make your vid but in the 7 minutes you have to include at least one submarine whether it is simulated or otherwise.

So all you budding machinima makers, crank up your skills for a chance to win one of the following awards:

Peoples choice

The rules for entries are simple:

All entries must be received by 5pm AEST (Sydney, Australia) on 30 April 2010. Any entries received after this time will not be considered.
All entries must be less than 7 mins long and must contain a submarine, simulated or otherwise. Other than that I don’t care what games or tools you used to create your entry.
All entries should have ending credits which include the following text or voiceover: "Dive into the Web's #1 Submarine and Naval Resource: SUBSIM.com"
Entries can be mailed on digital media or made available to me to download. To notify me of your entry by PM or e-mail. PM me to obtain my e-mail address.
Individuals may submit as many entries as they wish
All entries being considered for an award will be posted by me on the SubsimMachFest (http://au.youtube.com/user/SubsimMachFest) youtube channel.
All entries must be your own work although using material from other sources is allowed as long as it is properly credited. I have no interest in holding the rights to the videos other than the right to post them on the SubsimMachFest site.
All content must comply with the posting rules for Subsim, so no porn, racial or political vilification or abuse of any sort will be considered valid.
This is my film festival and I am the judge so if you have any complaints about my judging talk to the hand cos it’s mine and the entries have to please me. :O:

Hiddden & Dangerous ...what a game. Its awesomeness was only fractionally marred by it being a bit buggy. I played that game all the way to the end on hard.
I used to love the briefing session at the start of each mission: 'our primary objectives are, hear, hear eand hear.' lol
Watch out for the snipers on that hillside above the burning train :DL

H&D2 isn't bad either. Never got to finish that one though. I lost all my saves about half way through and was not pleased with the prospect of doing it all again without the 'lads' who'd taken on whatever I threw at them. I think I got to the first berlin mission, sometime after the naval fort/garrison where you infiltrated the sewers on your mini-sub and took out he naval battery and ammunition dump.

Aye, those briefings are really corny. "We have to force our way through by force" or "...otherwise the tanks will hang us on the trees like spaghetti", all with a hefty British accent :haha: Practically every briefing also says you have to get to a certain point "unobserved", while in the mission it quickly becomes apparent this is not only impossible but also not even needed.

I still remembered most of the enemy locations and triggers a bit too well, but despite that the game rocked. When HD2 originally came out I missed it and am now trying to track down a copy, so I have no idea how it plays out. No doubt it'll be a nice continuation to this.

Yep, Hidden & dangerous was a great game, but I could never get past the farking level where you have to get on the plane... Ither A id get over run, B run out of aamo (usualy sniper) or C Id get to the plane and franticly try to get on then ither, A id get mowed down by germans, or B I press the rong key and not get on, and it would take off without me...

Well, fighting them, of course, because aircraft carriers are for whimps.

It's one of the smaller scenarios from War Plan Orange, which is pretty much a spinoff of the original War in the Pacific based on a hypothetic war between Japan and the Allies during the 1920s after a failed Washington Naval Treaty, naturally entailing large-scale battleship engagements rather than WWII-style carrier battles.

And why haven't HMS Renown and Repulse broken down? :03:

Good question, I have 5 battleships and an aircraft carrier sitting around with all sorts of damage in port, but Refit and Repair haven't had any problems so far despite being in heavy action...

EDIT: Scratch that, both are out of commission, heavily damaged after a night battle with Nagato and Kaga.

In a dreadnought engagement with equal numbers of ships, the Japanese tend to win because pretty much all their dreadnoughts are highly modern and carry superior weaponry. Of course, once the rest of the USN, RN and RNN start bringing the newer ships online and redeploying the Atlantic fleets, the IJN is usually heavily outnumbered.

Basically, the strategic situation in the 1920s is pretty much the same as in 1940s, it just calls for different approaches to achieving victory, in which I am of course completely no good.

And I wouldn't worry about Yamato when I have these things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_13_class_battleship) to worry about in the 1926 campaign variant...

:o:o:o:o Ah crap, yeah, that's a proto-Yamato in the works there if ever I saw one.

Understandable about the strategy, after all even in the RL war, a lot of our front line BBs and BCs were WWI veterans, the Warspite for example, and without carrier warfare to spare them from proper gunzo engagements, there would definitely be a few problems with the tech and ability gap in the early war.

EDIT: How is your submarine capability?

Both sides have a fair amountof submarines (I think they number pretty equally), but Allied submarines are generally less aggressive (Be more aggressive!...sorry, had to...) because of their doctrine, they attack less often and will not usually gun specifically for the biggest ship around; Japanese submarines, on the other hand, have strict doctrines that usually make them pass up merchants and smaller ships and chase around battleships and carriers much more often. Quite a few of my losses (Including the battleships Queen Elizabeth, Valiant, Malaya and the carrier Argus, none of which sank but were all retired to port after sustaining heavy damage) were caused by IJN submarines ruthlessly torpedoing my fleets.

My subs killed a few ships, mostly merchants and DDs, but their biggest contribution is alerting me to when the Japanese convoys were transiting the Luzon straits in time for me to send out my battleships and battlecruisers to intercept and slaughter them (As displayed).

What's your ASW like? Can you form up Hunter-killer groups with any spare DDs? How's the ground warfare progressing? It doesn't look as though you have the luxury of being able to smash up Japanese merchants with your sub fleet as in the real Pacific war, hence the merchant raiders. What are the Japanese's usual tactics in this new scenario? :hmmm:

Okay, since this is the screenshot thread, a picture is worth six hundred and forty-five thousand one hundred and twenty pixels.

The scenario is a relatively small one (Okay, 2 months for ~60 turns isn't exactly small), based on the assumption that the Japanese occupied the Philippines and defeated the USN. The Japanese objective is to seize Brunei and Singapore, while the Allied objective is to destroy the IJN.

These are the principal actions on each side, it ain't too hard to guess the majority of the engagements tended to happen off the northwestern side of Luzon:

The Japense transport fleet from Formosa would usually pass the Allied sub line and proceed along the coast of Luzon, they would then get intercepted by Allied fleets from Singapore, Saigon and Hong Kong, which would in turn get counter-intercepted by the IJN operating out of Manila (Usually). Naturally, I would tend to lose these battles, but my battlecruisers, operating detached from the battleship fleet, would hunt the Japanese transports down in the meantime and cause them to retreat (This didn't always work out as planned, as displayed by Nagato and Kaga obliterating my modern BCs).

I tried mounting a counter-invasion in Lingayen, which managed to get in but was promptly annihilated by a Japanese counterattack, otherwise there was no ground war, as I've prevented the Japanese from landing.

I tried assigning DDs to ASW groups, but these usually failed except for damaging a few subs. The main problem is that the Japanese subs will tend to avoid the smaller ship groups and look for bigger targets, so they don't reveal themselves as much to such a group. The fact that IJN battleships can smite such an ASW group if it strays too far also doesn't help.

Thought of mixing in a BC or BB into a group of DDs to lure the subs out? Although there's a strong risk that the sub will give the DDs the finger and torpedo the BC or BB and slip away but it might bring them out of their hiding places long enough to get a fix on.

It's a pity you can't get a foothold on Batan to give you a airbase for any long range bombers you might have (presuming in 1924 that you HAVE long range bombers) to help you locate and/or whack the transport columns. Of course, you would also have the problem of facing a pincer offensive from both the Philippines and Tainan. :hmmm:

Mixing the BCs and BBs into the DD groups wouldn't be very effective, I need every capital ship I can get my hands on, especially given the losses I suffered at the hands of those infernal submarines already. It also wouldn't change much, as there are already large numbers of DDs with the existing BB and BC groups.

Batan has no airfield, and supplying it would not be a guarentee with the Japenese BBs around. Even then, the heaviest bomber I have is the Sopwith Cuckoo, which isn't the most devastating plane ever (I have some Felixstowe F.2 flying boats, but they can't be used for naval attacks). I used to run CV patrols between Taytay and Luzon, which managed to hit a couple of ships, but then Argus got torpedoed by a submarine and forced to retire and Hermes was sunk by Japanese BCs who pounced her in the night (And were later intercepted by the Tiger group, giving me my only confirmed BB/BC kill; Kongo); this pretty much eliminated my air power beyond Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Cuckoos from Hong Kong can barely reach Swatow, hitting Formosa or the Japanese convoys running along the Luzon Strait is impossible from there.

I'm pretty much doomed here, but I can at least force a draw, which is a de-facto strategic victory for me.

Bah, I did inflict horrible casualties on you regardless, I deserve no such thing until I lose decisively...

My failed tactics come mainly from playing one too many Napoleonic wargames lately. Figured charging was a good way to quickly break a unit and force a collapse, kinda like in real life, but turns out it's even more useless in NTW than it was in Empire. Also my skirmisher-heavy army composition from Empire is just useless now for some reason, they run out of ammo without inflicting the insane casualties they used to inflict in ETW...

Oh, TF, was the massed fire mod enabled on your end? I had some rather strange moments when my units just refused to fire no matter what I did with them, could be a consequence of the latest patch...

No, I had to use fire & advance also... Had the same issue acouple of times, and I also had some units that just decided on there own to charge at you (I knoticed this alot in the first battle).

winter has came. The ground and rivers are all frozen, and are fighters and interceptors can`t fly. are armys have been boged down.
Are defences around Romania, and In the north need to be reinforced and strenghtened, after being pushed back by a large solviet force. So the Summer Offence can be scucessful in pushing the communists back.

The Russians have a advantage that Has also seemingly Stopped my advance, A river. which has only one place to pass through with out crossing, Smolensk...

On the other hand, it's also hard for them to get across to attack you, just hold the line the best you can until the spring muds have passed and then go on the offensive again. Probably the last major offensive you'll get the chance to do though before Soviet numerical superiority takes a hold so make the most of it.

Namur is part of the PFN-line, so it could be a pain to crack. How about overrunning Valenciennes (Should be doable with a head-on assault, especially if you have sufficient CAS) and exploiting to the channel from there?

well, We sucessfuly managed to flank the french and utterly crush there entire army.:D all 40 french divisions distroyed. France soon fell, there moral was so low there troops couldnt even hold the line. Ill try to see If I can get image shack to work.

Italian forces in Spain will assist Spanish forces in capturing the British base of Gibraltar.

Sub-Operation Minor Nuisance
Our small fleet of naval bombers and submarines will attempt to close the Straits of Gibraltar to British warships.

Sub-Operation Not worth the effort
Italian forces will dig in on the French border and make offensive gestures towards the French

Sub-Operation French Franc
Should the Spanish decide to invade France then assistance is to be given where available without endangering the fail rate of other operations

Italian forces will enter into Greece across the Albanian border and once Greek forces are drawn north an amphibious assault will take place in the south of Greece to assist the northern assault. Sub-Operation Why bother packing a chute?
Once the relevant doctrines are complete and the units formed an airdrop will be made on Malta, continued airdrops will be made until a bridge of corpses is made to the Italian mainland where forces will march across to Malta, or until Malta is worn down enough to be captured.

Sub-Operation Don't stand a chance
Italian forces in North Africa (including one mechanised division to be finished in April) will use flanking maneuvers to isolate and destroy British forces in North Africa and then advance to the Suez. Or, more likely, run as fast as they can to Tripoli.

However, the primary objective of Operation Epic Fail is the control of the Mediterranean sea, or the Mare Nostrum as Il Duck likes to call it. This will be conducted by the three new level three and four carriers which have been added to the standard fleet which will most likely resort to ramming the enemy or at least form nice artificial reefs for sea life in the area.

The primary objective of this campaign should be complete by 1941 so that big brother Germany can have an easier ride of it, because if he doesn't...then we'll see how well we can make borscht out of pasta... :hmmm:

Just started a Campaign as Prussia. It's proving to be interesting so far. Austria declared war on me pretty early, and after fighting off their initial siege of Berlin I was able to beat them pretty soundly. Just wiped them out and I'm debating on what to do next. France isn't to fond of me, but I'd rather them provoke the war while I tend to improving my economy and begin to assimilate the new territories.

Unlucky BEF soldier laying dead inside a building in Gedinne. The shooter, Wehrmacht Major by the name of Dowly was killed shortly after as the building was hit by an bomb from a Luftwaffe aircraft. The remains of the building still stand today, in the midst of it there is a middle finger cast in bronze sticking out of the rubble.

I think the same, both in ME1 and ME2. You should probably play hardcore or insanity. I remember finishing most of ME1 once with Kaidan and Liara only, and I was an adept. That meant pistols most of the time (+ my shotgun that is :DL)

Individually, yes, in groups they can get around and poke you pretty hard. If it's turning into an arcade FPS you might want to try moving up to a higher difficulty as aergistal suggested.

That, would have to be one of the longest battles ive ever played in a game... My main problem in this battle was the crap load of AT guns the americans brought in. they had around 10-15. just kept bringing them in.

BlitzKader was called upon to provide a mortar barrage supporting the German counter-attack of Remagen. Sadly the campaign is going badly for the Axis forces, and we are being pushed right to the limit. A last gasp assault is tried to turn the Allied flank.

Had this been a squadnight, then we would have fielded around 20 mortars with about 10 people running ammo and another couple spotting rounds. Nevertheless, we had fun.

I CANT BELIVE THIS DAMNIT!!! I FINALY KNOCK THESE BASTARDS OUT!!! and guess what, the game makes me liberate them, and then it gives them the units I had there!!! OVER 20 divisions!!! motorised mainly! and entire army GONE! Yea, it pissed me off.

Its so nice, now if france decides to be a ass and declare war, I have nothing to defend with, other than the units in the west... and if thats all I have, im *******ed, its only enough to garrison it.

Da, But its just annoying to think of a the year it took to break over their rivers just to have them liberated, and have them take control of my armys....

Try the World War I mod sometime for HOI2. It's a pain in the ass when you have a country bog-down on you. Then, even when you do make a breakthrough with their lines, the AI just builds up its rear defenses and builds more and more units to plunge at you. The Russians are FAR worse a foe to face than the French.:o

In thinking of doing a big encirclement of the french. they are quite strong in the south. and have a large army in the north. Im thinking that if I move quickly, and Im guessing if they loose paris, they might start to break...

It kinda worked, in the end they pushed us back to around Berlin, where we broke through. and are now on are way to paris. Useing are numbers to win!

Precisely the reason why Moltke (the Elder) advocated that the priority for German deployement in a 2-front war should be against Russia rather than France.

And the WWI mod in it's original form is a bit too mobile, as the combat system hadn't been modified much. Much harder after you modify it to represent realistic WWI-style combat.
