According to USN Submarine Periscope Manual (June 1946), the most common and worst failure that scope optics were subject to (besides breaking apart of course), was water moisture getting in the tube and condensing on the internal faces of its lenses. It was called "internal fogging" and it resulted in the field becoming "clouded" or, in the worst cases, totally obscured, especially at low temperatures. Its elimination involved the use of a vacuum pump and a general overhaul that could be performed only by specialized personnel, and preferably ashore.

It would be cool if a patch by TDW could switch the usage of alternative foggy periscope masks, is any of our scopes gets damaged...
