YES! This is a topic that has been discussed/argued ad nausea, but since you are asking for MY opinion, I will give it to you. I like them both, in fact I have played and modded most of the super mods; RSRDC, FOTRS, GFO and OM. All of them add to the SH4 experience, and most of the modders include an explanation and reason why the did what they did.

As far as immersion goes, I think that should be for the individual to decide. There are mods that range from nuclear tipped torpedoes to accurate spacing of rivets on the bulkheads. My philosophy is, if I like it, I play it.
