Israel bombs Gaza food distribution point, kills four children
An Israeli drone attack on a food distribution point and a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza has killed at least five people, including four children.
At least three medics have been wounded in a drone attack on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya town, the fifth by Israel’s military on the medical facility in recent weeks.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health says Israeli attacks on the enclave killed 48 Palestinians and wounded 201 in the latest 24-hour reporting period.
Israeli forces have again bombed the so-called “safe zone” in Gaza’s al-Mawasi, killing at least 21 people and wounding dozens more, according to Atif al-Hout, the director of the Nasser Hospital in nearby Khan Younis.

The Assad regime is done. Syrian rebels have invaded the town of Hama, in northwestern Syria. Verified videos show them driving through the town and detainees released from a prison. The government army confirmed it had withdrawn from the town. The offensive is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Syrian National Army (SNA) part, a group supported by Turkey and other terror groups. They have gained much ground on the government army in recent times. Presumably, the rebels want to move after Hama towards Homs, some 40 kilometers south.
Assad's army says there was heavy fighting outside the city last night, killing several soldiers. According to the army, rebels carried out suicide attacks to get through defenses. The troops claim they retreated outside Hama to regroup. The capture of Hama is another sign that the government army is incapable of stopping the rebels. The rebels said they were advancing towards the center. Hours later, the army surprised by announcing that it had decided to withdraw to positions outside the city after heavy fighting. According to the army, by doing so, it wanted to avoid many casualties among the population in bloody street battles. Yeah, sure. Hama is an important hub in the country because it connects northern Syria with the south of the country. The government was in control of the city. A resident of the city said that since Wednesday, the internet had been shut down and streets were cleared. If Hama and Homs fall result is that Assad army cannot be supplied anymore all hope on Russia sending reinforcements are futile and still no word or seen Assad back from Moscow.
Apart from Homs, the area west of Hama on the Mediterranean Sea may also come under rebel control. Russia has a naval base here, near the port city of Tartus. The Russians also use an airbase there to attack the rebels. US news site Naval News reported on Tuesday that the Russians would already be preparing to leave the naval base if the rebel offensive is not stopped. According to Naval News, one of the six naval ships in Tartus has already left the port. The naval base is important to Moscow, as it allows the Russians to operate from the Mediterranean.HTS emerged from Syria's al-Qaida terror movement and other militant groups. The group is considered a terror group by the United Nations and the US, among others. HTS engaged in violent resistance with attacks early in the Syrian civil war. The group is led by Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. Goals include toppling President Assad's regime and ousting Iranian militias supporting Assad. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham means ‘Organization for the Liberation of the Levant’. Levant is a name for Syria, Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East.
If these rebels take control over Syria it will go from bad to worse for the citizens in the country.

Israel says body of hostage Itay Svirsky recovered from Gaza
The Israeli military says the body of an Israeli hostage held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been recovered in a joint operation with the Shin Bet security service.
A statement said Itay Svirsky, 38, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Be'eri during Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, was “murdered in captivity by his captors”.
Hamas said in January that Svirsky and another hostage, Yossi Sharabi, 53, had been killed by Israeli air strikes.
Earlier, the military said an investigation had concluded that the most plausible explanation for the deaths of six other hostages found dead in a tunnel in Gaza in August was that they were shot by Hamas "close" to the time of an Israeli air strike.
Troops recovered the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab, 35, Alexander Dancyg, 76, Avraham Munder, 79, Yoram Metzger, 80, Chaim Peri, 79, and Nadav Popplewell, a 51-year-old British-Israeli dual national, along with those of six Hamas fighters, in the southern Khan Younis area.
The military said it was “highly probable" the hostages' deaths were related to a February strike on a nearby underground site that targeted Hamas commanders.
Pathologists found indications of gunshots on the hostages’ bodies, while no gunshot wounds were found on the fighters' bodies, it added.
Due to the extended time that had passed "it was not possible to determine with complete certainty the precise cause of death of the hostages or the exact timing of the gunfire”, according to the military.
“According to the most plausible scenario, the terrorists shot the hostages close to the time of the strike,” it said. “However, it is also possible that the hostages were shot by other terrorists post-mortem; it is even possible that the hostages were killed prior to the strike in the area.”
An Israeli military official told reporters that the military believed the six Hamas fighters were “were killed from secondary effects of our strike", like lack of oxygen.
The military also stressed that it had "no information”, at the time of the strike that the hostages were in the underground site that was targeted or its vicinity.
“Had such information been available, the strike would not have been carried out,” it said, noting that it was preceded by the required planning and approval process.
There was no immediate comment from Hamas.

Homs also connects Damascus to the western heartland of the Alevis, the Muslim minority to which Assad belongs. For all these reasons, Homs will be hard-fought. It seems that Hama has been given up relatively easily by the government army to better protect Homs. If Iran can deliver substantially more reinforcements to ally Assad. The regime in Tehran has every interest in keeping the Syrian president in power. For example, to enable land supplies from Iran to Lebanon, where the pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah has been weakened by the war with Israel. But the advance is not without risks. On the one hand, just south of Hama, the regime still has the so-called ‘Tiger troops’, an elite unit of the Syrian army that is more loyal and better armed than divisions made up of conscripts. On the other hand, the rebels are at risk from their own success: if they spread their forces over too large an area, they become vulnerable to counterattacks in places they have already captured. The latter risk is now in play east of Aleppo, where the SDF's predominantly Kurdish militants are approaching a rebel-held military airfield. That air base is on a major access road to Aleppo.

True that :yep:
The uprising in Syria against dictator Assad's government is spreading. Meanwhile, militant groups in the south and east of the country have also taken up arms. The Syrian army appears to be offering little resistance. In the northwest, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels took at least two towns near Homs today: Rastan and Talbiseh. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, this Islamist militant group is just five kilometers from Homs. Verified images confirm this.
In the south, insurgents have taken over the town of Daraa and towns in the surrounding area. Images show them raising the flag of free Syria. An army base was attacked near the city. The rebels control the entrance gate. It is unclear whether the army has also been defeated there. Jordan has closed its border crossing with Syria near the town of Nassib. A source in the Syrian army says rebels have shelled army checkpoints there. Men can be seen online storming checkpoints near the border post.
In the east, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have taken full control of Deir el-Zor, a city on the Euphrates. The SDF is a coalition of the Kurdish YPG and Arab militias. The group has the backing of the United States. The city reportedly fell into the hands of the SDF without a fight. The foreign ministers of Syria, Iran and Iraq met in Baghdad today for consultations. Syrian minister Sabbagh said the developments were a serious threat to the stability of the entire region. Whether the three have reached concrete agreements is not known. According to an Iraqi security source, the SDF is also advancing towards the Syrian town of Albukamal, on the border with Iraq.
The capture of Homs is an important strategic move for the rebels. Upon capture, the capital Damascus will be cut off from the coast, where Assad's Russian allies have a naval and air force base. The HTS' ultimate goal of toppling President Assad is getting closer. Meanwhile, thousands of Syrians have fled the city to escape the approaching violence of war. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syrian government forces have now withdrawn from Homs. Director Rami Abdel Rahane states that Syrian soldiers have now retreated to the suburbs. The Syrian defense ministry denies this. Syrian rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghany has called on the Syrian army's top military officers to defect to the rebel side, according to Reuters news agency. He did so in a video statement broadcast on Friday.
The regime is faltering, but it is not yet falling. In the more than 50 years that the Assad family now rules Syria, predictions that they would fall have never come true. Even in the early days of the 2011 uprising, Assad's fall seemed imminent, but the regime struck back hard with Iranian and Russian help. Yet, for several reasons, Assad is in even worse shape this time around than he was then. For instance, morale in the regime army is low and there is also great discontent among Assad's traditional supporters. Look, for instance, at the Alawites, the minority from which the regime itself stems. When the uprising broke out in 2011, they went to war en masse to defend Assad, but this time tens of thousands of them are fleeing from Homs towards the Alawite coastal areas. That region appears to be keeping away from the battleground for now, and there are reports that the regime is struggling to recruit even here. Assad therefore has little to offer. The regime runs on a war economy full of drug trafficking and extortion. Government services are virtually non-existent. And this is precisely where the rebels offer an alternative: HTS Islamists managed to establish a relatively functional government in Idlib. His allies also see this. Russia and Iran rescued Assad before, but are now annoyed by his stubbornness and incompetence. In the Assads' family dynasty, there are no real alternatives, people who can change course or sit down with the rebels. A successful palace coup or truce with the rebels thus seems unlikely. Assad will fight, flee or fall. What it will depend above all on his foreign allies.
From rebel-held areas, there are many images of popular relief. Political prisoners are freed, statues of the Assad family are toppled, people take to the streets cheering. But they are cheering primarily for the departure of the hated regime - not for the arrival of HTS. The difference between the reactions in Aleppo and Hama was striking. In the latter, conservative Sunni city, people were dancing in the streets after the Islamist rebels' arrival. In Aleppo, people reacted more cautiously. That city then also has more minorities, such as Kurds and Christians, who are more hesitant about what an HTS regime could mean for them. HTS is trying to allay fears. Their leader Abu Mohammed Jolani appeared in front of the Aleppo citadel on Wednesday and indicated that Christians need not fear. After taking Hama, he made yet another appeal to his fighters not to retaliate against regime supporters. And in the city of Salamiyah, HTS entered talks with the Ismaelite minority (a current within Shiism) to negotiate the departure of regime forces. These signals are important, but they are also part of a charm offensive. It is far too early to judge whether Jolani will put his statements into practice. Moreover, the question is to what extent he can keep his troops in line: after all, many rebels are fighting a regime that has killed or expelled their own family members in recent years.
This Saturday, Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet in the Qatari capital Doha. These are the most active players in Syria, and they are all now trying to strengthen their negotiating position before Donald Trump enters the White House in January. For now, Turkey benefits from the rebel offensive. On the one hand, the expulsion of Assad may eventually create space for the return of refugees. On the other hand, Ankara-led SNA rebels already managed to capture territory north of Aleppo from YPG Kurdish militants. A limited offensive in which these gains are cashed in is more in Ankara's interest than an all-or-nothing battle all the way to Damascus. But the Turks do not have nearly as much influence on HTS as they do on the SNA. If Jolani decides to lay siege to the capital, it is highly questionable whether Ankara can rein him in. Tehran on Friday announced it would send more drones, missiles and military advisers to Syria, but Iran's options are limited. Too far-reaching military intervention is asking for blows from incoming President Trump. Moreover, Hezbollah has been weakened by Israel, and it remains to be seen to what extent pro-Iranian militias in Iraq will join the fight. Some factions have been doing this for years, and they will want to help Assad, but the Iraqi government is not waiting for a large-scale mobilization that could pull Iraq into a new war.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Jolani said HTS is only a means to overthrow Assad. Once that job is done, HTS can disband ‘any time’ to make way for civilian governance, Jolani said. Exactly what that administration will look like, or what the place of Islamic law in it will be, was left open. Jolani called only for strong institutions and ‘a legal framework that protects the rights of all’. It is hard to imagine that the power-hungry Jolani would step aside after any regime fall. Yet, HTS has already proved in Idlib that it can set up a government that has some autonomy and delivers relatively effective governance. But in a homogeneous and conservative province like Idlib, this is a lot easier for HTS than in a diverse country like Syria.
Syria's ruling army has faced not only a complete breakdown in command, but also a severe shortage of manpower caused by internal reforms, corruption and desertion. Many commanders and officers in the combat zone were missing when the rebels opened the attack in Aleppo. The reformed army, on the advice of ally Russia, is Russian-based. Because Russian doctrine requires military leadership to be behind the lines, units in Aleppo had to make their own decisions as their battalions and brigade commanders were missing. Some units fought, others withdrew. He also noted that the army has been plagued by desertions for years. In the past week, too, there were reports of soldiers deserting and returning home. There were also arrests of commanders, leaving units adrift and morale falling. On Sunday, for instance, a commander in Hama was arrested for withdrawing his brigade from an area without permission. Rebels then quickly took it. Another major reason for the government army's impotence is the loss of a good deal of support from Hezbollah, Iran and even Russia. As a result, the army has to fend for itself. 'This has led to units, which for years received close Russian command support, suddenly being forced to carry out a defense operation entirely on their own. The US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) points to another reason for the meteoric advance of the rebels, who on paper are not as numerous as the army: entire villages appear to be surrendering, after negotiations with the rebels, after which the fighters can advance further without fighting. At least three Christian and Shia villages did this near Hama in recent days. The ISW then predicted on Thursday that rebels would be at Homs by Friday.

It looks as if the Syrian army is completely falling apart, collapsing. This could indeed be the end of the Assad regime. I am not yet fully convinced, but it could be. The rebels are almost blitzing across Syria. Homs is their next target. And then Damascus is left. Desertation in the Syrian army is reported to be high, and growing.
The good in that? The Russian naval base may come in doubt, too.
Hezbollah, Iran, Russia all are distracted.

Israel eliminates chief of Hamas' aerial unit behind October 7 attack
The IDF eliminated the head of Hamas' aerial unit in Gaza City. He was one of the organizers of the aerial invasion of Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
According to the report, as a result of a joint precision operation by Israeli forces, terrorist Nidal Al-Najar, head of Hamas' aerial unit in Gaza and the leader of its air defense unit, was killed on December 3, 2024.
Al-Najar was one of the organizers of the air assault on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
Additionally, during the ongoing large-scale war, the terrorists played a key role in coordinating attacks against Israel and IDF forces operating in central Gaza, including using explosive drones and UAVs targeting Israeli troops.

Before the raid, there were airstrikes and heavy shelling on and around the hospital. Abu Safiya claims hundreds were killed and wounded. This cannot be verified: independent observers and aid workers do not enter the area, which has been under siege by Israeli forces since early October, if at all. Indeed, images show many bodies.
If this is not a war crime or genocide, I do not understand.

[Neue Zürcher Zeitung] If the central Syrian city [Homs] falls, this could herald the end of the Asad regime. This is because Homs is located on a strategically important highway that connects Damascus with the Mediterranean coast and Asad's Alawite homeland. If the city is lost, the rebels will have a clear path to Damascus. The Damascus ruler's troops should therefore be preparing to advance by now at the latest.
However, there is little to suggest that the Syrian army will succeed. The demoralized, hollowed-out troops seem either unable or unwilling to oppose the onslaught of the rebel forces supported by Turkey and led by the Islamist organization HTS. Even a Russian airstrike on an important bridge halfway from Hama to Homs was unable to stop the rebels.
But Asad is facing further disaster: inspired by the success of the rebels in the north, opponents of the regime are now also rising up in the south of the country. Within a very short space of time, they attacked police and military positions in Daraa and Suweida and allegedly took control of Syria's border crossing to Jordan. In the east, Asad's troops also cleared the city of Deir al-Zur. As a result, the noose around Damascus is tightening ever tighter.

Shyt is about to hit the fan I didn't expect the battle for Damascus until several weeks. A special military operation the russians could only dream about. :har: I do not see any and this is literally any friend helping Assad yeah they talk today but... that will be all. Less than 30 km remain to Damascus rebels from the south entered the cities of Ghabaghib and Kanakir, and Syrian troops of the Assadi regime are retreating from Zakiyah, located 20 km from the capital. Homs stands out as the geographic, economic, and military heart of Syria. If the rebels gain control of Homs, it could pave the way for a rapid advance toward Damascus joining the forces from the South, making the city's fate a critical factor in the coming days. Note they do not have to take Damascus, a siege will be enough to let the city surrender. According to Russian war bloggers, Syrian government forces are retreating without fighting. Our forces have entered the city of Sanamin, north of Daraa, and declared it liberated, bringing us within 20 km of the southern gate of Damascus.

Saga how Assad is losing control of Syria when 95.19% of Syrians voted for him in the election!! Ukraine, Syria, Abkhazia, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Romania. The Russian master plan to resurrect the empire is falling apart in front of our eyes. Assad asked Turkey to intervene in what was happening, asked for weapons from Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iraq, but was refused. Lavrov dismisses media claims of Russia allegedly withdrawing ships from its Tartus base in Syria, clarifying that "naval exercises are actively underway in the Mediterranean Sea". Must be a regrouping. :har: Allegedly, Syrian Army soldiers at the Lebanese-Syrian border are abandoning their posts and flee to Lebanon. Russian forces leaving the Hmeimim base in Latakia and evacuating their S-300 and Tor-M1 air defense systems to the port of Tartous."We could see the end of Assad's rule in Syria in the coming hours," a senior US official told Reuters.Syrian army positions in rural Damascus are falling apart, one by one. It is going fast. Currently, fighting is raging around Homs, the second most important city after Damascus where President Assad is still in power. The Syrian army is carrying out airstrikes there. This morning, it became clear that Assad's forces have moved out of much of southern Syria to reinforce positions around Homs. This has left the provinces of Daraa and Sweida under rebel control. The authorities of Egypt and Jordan urged Assad to also leave the country and form a government-in-exile. Jordan strongly denies this. The Syrian army is reportedly retreating in the region around the capital Damascus. So says the NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the organisation that monitors Syria's civil war through an informant network. Government forces have withdrawn to Artoz and are thus some 10 kilometres from the capital, it sounds.
According to the NGO, rebels are surrounding several villages in the Damascus area. They also reportedly want to free prisoners from a military prison near the capital. The rebels advancing from the south say themselves that they have begun the encirclement of the capital. They refer to the ‘final phase’ of the encirclement, according to rebel commander Hassan Abdel Ghani. The latter had earlier addressed followers of the various religious strands via messaging service Telegram, assuring that everyone can have confidence in it and should support the uprising. ‘The era of sectarianism and tyranny is over forever,’ he said. The Syrian army denies and says troops ‘present in all zones of rural Damascus’ are not withdrawing. The area in question is Rif Dimashq province. Further north, fighting is taking place near Homs, according to the Observatory. Large reinforcements for government forces are reported, which would halt the rebels' advance there. Russian and Syrian air and artillery attacks killed seven civilians near Homs, the NGO said.
Iraqi authorities have allowed hundreds of Syrian army soldiers to cross the border. They were fleeing fighting with rebels, the French news agency AFP heard from sources in Iraq's security services. The soldiers included wounded people. The Syrian regime's soldiers ‘fled the fighting’ and arrived in Iraq via Al-Qaïm border crossing, a senior security official told AFP. The latter added that wounded people were taken to hospital from the border town in western Iraq. A second security source speaks of nearly 2,000 troops, ‘officers and soldiers’ who crossed the border with Baghdad's permission. The border crossing is on the banks of the Euphrates, amid the large desert area in northern Syria. As the crow flies, the border crossing is some 130 kilometres south of the town of Deir Ezzor.

It's being reported by the Assad regime that he is still in Damascus but I doubt it, he's probably already fled the country taking his wife and family with him.

Assad is nowhere to be found in Damascus, source says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is nowhere to be found in Damascus, a source tells CNN.
The official line of the Syrian president’s office is that Assad hasn’t fled the capital. But a source with knowledge of the situation tells CNN that Assad isn’t at any of the locations in the city where you’d expect to find him.
Assad’s Presidential Guard are no longer deployed at his usual place of residence, as they would be if he was there, the source said, fueling speculation he may have escaped Damascus.
Traditionally, this guard detail would provide Assad’s inner cordon of security, and some of them would be expected to travel with the president when he is on the move.
According to the source, rebel forces have no solid intelligence on Assad’s location and are continuing their efforts to find him.
A friend said in an issue that Ukraine was supporting some of the Islamic groups in Syria.
I doubt this is the case I feel it's Russian propaganda.

ROFLMAO :har:
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have fled to Abu Dhabi, according to Turkish outlets citing UAE sources. CNN sources confirm Assad is no longer in Damascus. The Lion of Damascus just became a stray dog.
Been waiting for the news that Assad have used chemical weapons.
He have done it before.
Markus
^Tell me who would execute those orders? There is nobody left tomorrow. According to reports, Syrian Army is leaving Duma, a city located 10 km northeast of Damascus. Protesters claim that the Damascus-Homs road has been cut off and is not controlled by government forces. It is also reported that Syrian army is leaving Eastern Ghouta 8 km east of Damascus.
Rebels in southern Syria have asked the Organization for the Prohibition on Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for help in disposing safely of a stockpile of chemical weapons built up by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. “The Syrian people have endured immense suffering and wounds due to the criminal use of internationally prohibited weapons by Bashar al-Assad’s regime against innocent civilians, in blatant violation of all international conventions and humanitarian values,” the southern Syrian rebels said in a statement Saturday. They called on the international community “to support the complete removal of all weapons of mass destruction from Syria.” The rebels said they wanted to cooperate with the OPCW and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, “to investigate the programs and stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction owned by Bashar al-Assad’s criminal regime.”
With rebels edging ever-closer to Syria's capital, Assad is making a last-ditch attempt to remain in power, including indirect diplomatic overtures to the US and Trump. One offer Assad made to the US via the United Arab Emirates is for Syria to cut all involvement with Iran-backed militant groups, such as Hezbollah, if Western powers wield influence to stem the fighting. Another initiative saw Assad dispatch a senior Christian leader to meet Hungarian President Viktor Orban to relay what he sees as an existential threat to Syria’s Christian minority if Islamist rebels prevail, according to other people familiar with the plan. The intention was that Orban, a Trump ally, would convey this danger to the incoming US president, they said... https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-07/syria-s-besieged-assad-makes-overtures-to-us-in-bid-to-survive And Asma certainly not helping him now she is busy packing her jewels, she only reacts on Assad biaaching which nation he still owns by "Dog get the **** out of this shyte hole pass the crack pipe lemme get another hit… Dog!!"
Assad forces are withdrawing from Homs.
The Russian fleet in Tartus received orders to abandon the naval port. "They are leaving." This is how fast red lines are getting buried, no matter if they are in the Syrian Desert or Ukraine's Donbas. When it is over, then it is over, and Russians leave.

What happened !? For years it was mostly silence from the civil war in Syria and then some days ago it all went into massive fighting.
What triggered this ?
MarkusTurkey triggered this they trained and supplied the SNA and HTS Erdoğan never cared if it had to deal with ISIS or other jihadist group from the beginning he made deals with ISIS to trade daily truck loads of oil drove into Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan long tried to normalize ties with Damascus so he could - an election promise - send home millions of Syrian refugees. ‘We said to Assad: let's shape Syria's future together,’ Erdoğan declared on Friday. ‘Unfortunately, we did not get a positive answer to that.’ He added to ‘hope’ that the insurgents' advance would continue, “of course, all the way to Damascus”. For years, Ankara invested in ties with HTS, supplied weapons, and established dozens of military support points in the HTS stronghold of Idlib. Initially, the rebels wanted to launch this offensive as early as mid-October, but Turkish Secret Service MIT reportedly put a stop to that, hoping Assad would come to his senses. That the rebels would advance so quickly after that, no one could have seen coming, including Turkey. Now the Turks can wait and see. They will determine their position based on what happens on the battlefield. Like they did in WWI but picked the wrong side and WWII after Rommel lost El Alamein turkey wait and pick the winner.
Hezbollah militias withdraw from Al-Qusayr in Homs towards Lebanon. A Senior Syrian army general says that top military and security officials in Homs have fled to the coast via helicopters. Syrian opposition factions: Our forces have begun entering and deploying in the city of Homs, Syria.
Now the rats is leaving the sinking ship
Markus
^This is also the main reason why the rebels could advance +250 km in less than a week the army had no real command they commanded the Syrian army from Damascus so, so rebel forces could easily make agreements with lower ranks to retreat. With most cities it was rebels at the gates, after a couple of hours of talking with Syrian forces deals were made to leave the city alive.
I had hope SDF would take the charge and become the leader of Syria. As it looks now it seems to be a joint Islamic groups who will be in charge-Making Syria looking like Afghanistan.
Markus
^I would also prefer that it is the only democratic western faction, with this faction you will not see massacres because of belief or ethnicity on the moment they are the only that try to evacuated civilians in need to safety no matter what they believe or of their ethnicity. The US and Israel’s only true allies in the Syrian conflict are the Kurds. The rest are clear adversaries Erdoğan, Assad, Putin, Khamenei, Hezbollah, Iraqi Shiite militias and Julani (leader of HTS in Syria). Our failure to support the Kurds over the years has been a major mistake.

All flights have been cancelled from Damascus International Airport. Bashar al-Assad’s forces have abandoned Damascus International Airport. Multiple sources confirm that most army and security personnel in Damascus are being told to change into civilian clothes and go home. It's over this night more than 50,000 detainees will be free from Sednaya Prison.Iran and Russia sold us out and Bashar Al-Assad sold us out… stop lying, he sold us out. Quick show, already over. Wowh, somebody planned his homework right.
Rumours say that Assad may have been on that plane that got shot down, but it is not confirmed and maybe just wishful thinking.
The slaughterer is gone, that is good, but the risk for an increased multi-front civil war is real, also for the divide of the country. As a result migrants fleeing from Assad may not return to Syria, but even more Syrians may flee from Syria.
And an old enemy believed to have been beaten may come back: ISIS.
So, the latest news is well-received, but it is not without big rocks of salt.
I hope that Russian naval base has been there for the longest time.

[Frankfurter Rundschau] There are new rumors about the whereabouts of Syria's ruler Assad. There is speculation as to whether he is no longer alive, but whether the plane he was trying to flee in crashed.
As the news agency Reuters reports, a Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport at around the same time as rebels captured the capital. This also emerges from data from the Flightradar website. The plane initially headed for the Syrian coast, but then suddenly made a U-turn and flew in the opposite direction. It then disappeared from the map.
According to Reuters, it is unclear who was on board the plane and whether Assad was on board. Two Syrian sources told the news agency that there was “a very high probability that Assad could have died in a plane crash”. The reason for this was the sudden disappearance of the plane from radar.

Who is Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the insurgency that toppled Syria's Assad?
Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the militant leader whose stunning insurgency toppled Syria’s President Bashar Assad, has spent years working to remake his public image, renouncing longtime ties to al-Qaida and depicting himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. In recent days, the insurgency even dropped his nom de guerre and began referring to him by his real name, Ahmad al-Sharaa.
The extent of that transformation from jihadi extremist to would-be state builder is now put to the test.
Insurgents control capital Damascus, Assad has fled into hiding, and for the first time after 50 years of his family’s iron hand, it is an open question how Syria will be governed.
Syria is home to multiple ethnic and religious communities, often pitted against each other by Assad’s state and years of war. Many of them fear the possibility Sunni Islamist extremists will take over. The country is also fragmented among disparate armed factions, and foreign powers from Russia and Iran to the United States, Turkey and Israel all have their hands in the mix.
The 42-year-old al-Golani -- labeled a terrorist by the United States -- has not appeared publicly since Damascus fell early Sunday. But he and his insurgent force, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS – many of whose fighters are jihadis -- stand to be a major player.
For years, al-Golani worked to consolidate power, while bottled up in the province of Idlib in Syria’s northwest corner as Assad’s Iranian- and Russian-backed rule over much of the country appeared solid.
He maneuvered among extremist organizations while eliminating competitors and former allies. He sought to polish the image of his de-facto “salvation government” that has been running Idlib to win over international governments and reassure Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities. And he built ties with various tribes and other groups.
Along the way, al-Golani shed his garb as a hard-line Islamist guerrilla and put on suits for press interviews, talking of building state institutions and decentralizing power to reflect Syria’s diversity.
“Syria deserves a governing system that is institutional, no one where a single ruler makes arbitrary decisions,” he said in an interview with CNN last week, offering the possibility HTS would eventually be dissolved after Assad falls.
“Don’t judge by words, but by actions,” he said.
Al-Golani’s beginnings in Iraq
Al-Golani’s ties to al-Qaida stretch back to 2003, when he joined extremists battling U.S. troops in Iraq. The Syrian native was detained by the U.S. military but remained in Iraq. During that time, al-Qaida usurped like-minded groups and formed the extremist Islamic State of Iraq, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
In 2011, a popular uprising against Syria’s Assad triggered a brutal government crackdown and led to all-out war. Al-Golani’s prominence grew when al-Baghdadi sent him to Syria to establish a branch of al-Qaida called the Nusra Front. The United States labeled the new group as a terrorist organization. That designation still remains in place and the U.S. government has put a $10 million bounty on him.
https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/who-is-abu-mohammed-al-golani-the-leader-of-the-insurgency-that-toppled-syria-s-assad/ar-AA1vtxfa?ocid=msedgntp&pc=U531&cvid=2a08bdcf28904adc98dea1a9b654f9e7&ei=14
Today all al-Qaida, ISIS fighters are being freed, not only the dissidents against Assad. HTS former al-Qaida-Syria has to form a government, but this will not be easy. Syria has about 7 ethnic groups. Sunni Muslims make up around 74% of Syria's population, and Sunni Arabs account for 59–60%. Most Kurds (8.5%) and most Turkmen's (3%) are Sunni, while 3% of Syrians are Shia Muslims, 10% Alawites, 10% Christians and 3% Druzes. This can not be done by 1 faction and HTS, SNA cannot form a government on their own. The only faction that has already a good functioning government are the Kurds, they formed a government in the north-east since the start of the Syrian revolution. But turkey does not want them near their border. Situation is like in Iraq. Any government needs the UN because this country is mayor important in our geopolitics, we need to dim Russia, Iran and Türkiye to gain any gain in the geopolitics. Syria is for Iran important for supporting Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis that we need to keep cut off. Also, we need to keep Russia out we need to prevent them to have a port, air force in the Middle East the more we can weaken Russia and Iran (the anti-west bloc) the better it is for Ukraine. We need also curb Türkiye it eats from both side it also supports al-Qaida and ISIS, if we the west become weak in their eyes they switch sides in a way we can do nothing against also weakens Ukraine in the process. The economy is a disaster, much of the country is in ruins, and most Syrians are mostly dead tired from years of ongoing war. And now their future is once again uncertain.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali has not gone on the run. He has called for free elections to be held in Syria. The Syrian prime minister earlier said in a video message that he is ready to hand over power after President Assad appears to have fled. ‘We are ready to hand over power to the elected leadership,’ he said in a video message, calling for a “peaceful transition”. Let's hope all faction can and are willing to work with him, he is Syrian only person that is capable to guide them to one government if he rules is up to the Syrian people to decide. We sure saw a decade happen this week.

Bashar al-Assad has FLED Syria
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left office and departed the country after giving orders of a peaceful handover of power, the Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed.
In a statement, the ministry did not say where Assad was now and said Russia has not taken part in talks around his departure.
It said Russia's military based in Syria had been put on a state of high alert, but there was no serious threat to them at present.
Moscow is understood to be in touch with all Syrian opposition groups and urged all sides to refrain from violence.
It comes as Syrians have stormed Assad's presidential palace in Damascus as rebels declare that the country is 'free' from the 'tyrant'.
The opposition fighters reached the suburbs of the capital yesterday for the first time since the region was recaptured by government troops in 2018.
Syrian state television showed the rebels milling around inside the despot's palace after he fled this morning on a plane to an unknown destination.
Military and intelligence officials are being quizzed by the rebel soldiers about Assad's whereabouts as they try to pinpoint his movements.
Following the capture of Damascus, the HTS (Hayyet Tahrir al-Sham) said on Telegram that it was the end of a dark era and the beginning of a new one.
The rebels said that people displaced or imprisoned under the half-century reign of Assad can now come home.
HTS said it will be a 'new Syria' where 'everyone lives in peace and justice prevails'.
A statue of the late father of al-Assad in a main square in Jermana suburb, ten kilometres from the capital, has also been toppled.

Kurdish militias see new beginning for Syria
Kurdish militias in Syria see new opportunities for their country now that President Bashar al-Assad has fled. ‘This change offers an opportunity to build a new Syria, where democracy and justice are central,’ said Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi. Then, he says, ‘the rights of all Syrians can be guaranteed’. ‘These are historic moments in Syria as we see the fall of the authoritarian regime in Damascus,’ Abdi said. The Kurdish SDF controls large areas in Syria, but is not part of the coalition of rebel groups that ousted Assad. The SDF also worked closely with the United States in the fight against terror group Islamic State, which had established its own ‘caliphate’ in Syria and Iraq at an earlier point in the Syrian civil war.
Syria opposition works on transitional government
The Syrian opposition is forming a transitional government with full executive powers. This will seek cooperation with the region and the rest of the world, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) reported on X. The opposition movement currently operates from abroad. Syria should observe a transition period of a year and a half to create a ‘safe, neutral and peaceful’ situation for holding free elections. This is what SOC leader Hadi al Bahra advocates.
In the first six months of that transition period, a constitution should be drafted, he suggests. This should state what the country's government should look like: a parliamentary system, a presidential system or a hybrid form. After that, as far as he is concerned, elections could be held and the people could choose their leader. According to Bahra, the fall of the Assad regime was the result of a ‘domino effect’. Power in the Middle East shifted dramatically after Israel killed several Hezbollah leaders in the past two months. Before then, the Iran-backed movement was the lynch pin of Assad's forces. At the same time, Russia, another key ally, could no longer step in because it was too busy with the war in Ukraine. ‘It was clear that Assad did have to leave. I feel relief, but also sadness. He must be held accountable for all his crimes,’ Bahra said.

From eye doctor to dictator - the rise and fall of Assad's presidency
https://news.sky.com/story/from-eye-doctor-to-dictator-the-rise-and-fall-of-assads-presidency-13269485
The consequences are huge. The biggest loser, of course, is Iran, which was unable to intervene. They lose their most important ally. The ‘axis of resistance’, a crucial pawn for Tehran, disappears from the Middle East. Iran can now no longer supply weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon through Iraq and Syria. This is a massive reshaping of the Middle East, an earthquake. Saudi Arabia does not like to see this happen, as it does not like chaos and quickly demands stability. Turkey's main interest is to make its shared border with Syria safer from Kurdish attacks. They also have huge numbers of Syrian refugees. Many are now hoping to finally return. Therefore, what happens now may be to Turkey's advantage. It is one of the open questions for the Kurds themselves. But they themselves have now taken Deir es-Zor and thus actually participated in Assad's expulsion. They thus put themselves on the same side of HTS. Al-Jolani also already gave a message that there is a place for them at the table. Whether they will get an autonomous area of their own, I do doubt that.
Several aircraft and warships have already departed from Hmeimim airfield and Tartus port. This is a huge setback for Russia. Moscow, through its support for Assad, always wanted to show that they are there for friendly heads of state, also as a signal to former Soviet republics. In one week, everything now seems over. For Putin, this is both a strategic and psychological blow. Israel began operations in Syria in the first hours after the fall of the Assad regime. This was expected, as Tel Aviv will do everything possible to reinforce its border, create a buffer zone to control and take away any possibility of negotiations on Golan. Israeli air strikes target several locations in the Syrian capital, Damascus (Munitions Caches and Advanced-Weapons Systems at Mezzeh Air Base).

Israel is about deleting/destroying information and intelk the Syrian agencies and services may have collected on Israel and that Israel does not want the new Syrian rulers to have their eyes on.
^Tell them the FSB has/had huge archives in Syria :03: Israel is now making sure not too much comes in the hands of the rebels hence the airstrikes, and they make sure they keep the Golan Heights by creating a buffer zone in Syria. Kurdish forces have reportedly begun blocking certain Russian military facilities in the Trans-Euphrates region, according to Rybar. He adds that Russian positions at the oil refinery in the Homs desert are also blocked. According to Russian channels, Russian forces will completely leave Syria. "The military base in Khmeimim and the port in Tartous will be withdrawn." At this point, the Russian presence in Syria is not just hanging by a thread, as Rybar claims—it is essentially eliminated. There will be no Russians in Syria, and subsequently none in Africa either. This is called checkmate.
The fact that Erdoğan began the Manbij attack so close to the moment that Al Julani took Damascus may indicate that Erdoğan does not expect to have Al Julani's support for Turkey's ambitions in Syria. Turkey has a very short window of opportunity to change facts in the ground. If Manbij offensive fails, Turkey and SNA will not have good grounds for negotiations, especially starting an offensive after Assad failed and everyone else was celebrating. If Turkish thugs can't get Manbij, follow-up operations will become increasingly unlikely.
Here is what I've heard the last hour.
1. ISIS is on the move in Eastern part of Syria
2. USA have bombed 75 targets related to ISIS
3. The Kurds are under attack from rebel groups in Northern part of Syria.
Markus
^ISIS is on the move because they get bombarded by B52's, F-15's, A-10's so yeah they move they run like hell :har: U.S. Central Command announced that the bombers and fighter jets targeted more than 75 targets in the Syrian Desert, going after known ISIS fighters and camps. It’s unclear how many ISIS members or leaders were killed in the attacks, but a senior U.S. administration official, speaking on background to reporters, called the strike “significant” given the size of the area targeted and the number of ISIS members gathered there. https://taskandpurpose.com/news/air-force-syria-isis-strikes/ This is the reason the US supports the Kurds they are the only ones that fight ISIS other factions including turkey works with/are ISIS.All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way
Syrian rebels (NSA) say they have started an attack on Kurdish-led forces in the northern Syrian town of Manbij, according to a statement posted today but dated yesterday. This is not new, this group does this with the backing of Turkey for years with not much result. This group was neither in large part in this "Damascus by 7 days' Operation" they started day 1 attacking the Kurds their goal was never Damascus but the SDF.
What everyone wants to avoid is the whole of Syria descending into the hell that the Da’esh caliphate inflicted on eastern Syria and northern Iraq; or a more violent version of Lebanon, as a semi-failed state; and of course a war between the rebel groups and Israel. There are huge risks, given the Islamist politics of some of the victorious armed groups — risks for all ethnic and religious minorities in a situation where power suddenly collapses and groups of armed men are in charge. But who can help stabilise things? Who can ensure that breaches of international law are punished — both those perpetrated by Assad in the past and any in the future perpetrated by the rebels? Who, indeed, can ensure that Syria does not face a “Libyan future”? The answer is: the rules based global order. Yes, the very thing that the tankies have told you is anathema, and “imperialist”.
If Syria now descends into chaos, that will be because the much-admired “multipolar world” is a recipe for chaos. Because China, the string puller behind the great unraveling, can’t yet bring itself to retake an island 160km off its own shores, let alone exert itself as a new global hegemony to replace failing US willpower in the Middle East. Yes, compañeros, the only force that stands a cat in hell’s chance of helping the Syrian people achieve self-determination and justice, and avoid another Taliban/Da’esh scenario, is “the West”, in the form of the Sykes-Picot signatories Britain and France, the UN, EU, NATO member Turkey, the despised state of Israel plus old Joe Biden in America, for the four weeks he has left.
In Lattakia, Sunni, Alawite, and Christian religious leaders reportedly gathered at the Huryieh Mosque to discuss the situation after Assad's regime fell, and reaffirm the city’s commitment to peaceful coexistence amidst recent developments. SDF fighters found in a former Russian base in Deir Ezzor flags and uniforms of the Islamic State. Apparently, this is some material for false flag operations and scarecrow tactics, a typical Russian strategy known as „provokatsia“.
At least 100,000 Syrian prisoners trapped in Sednaya Prison. Underground electronic doors cannot be opened without secret codes and are equipped with explosives, the new Syrian government announced. Lawyer Nabil Halabi reports that lower cells in Saydnaya Prison, known as "red wards" or "death wards," remain sealed. The regime disabled electronic gates and ventilation systems, leaving detainees trapped in what are described as human slaughterhouses. Rescue teams face challenges due to limited resources and the overwhelming presence of detainees’ families gathering at the prison, fearing for their loved ones trapped inside at risk of suffocation. After hanging (that we do not know, maybe they were alive), the body of the prisoner is placed in the iron execution press and flattened like a sheet of paper. This prison is by design an Auschwitz-Birkenau. Detainees (men. women and little kids) held without charge in solitary confinement, left to rot. This is the "Human Slaughterhouse" of Syria
The White Helmets has deployed 5 specialized emergency teams to Sednaya Prison to investigate hidden underground cells, reportedly holding detainees according to survivors. The teams consist of search and rescue units, wall-breaching specialists, iron door-opening crews, trained dog units, and medical responders. These teams are well trained and equipped to manage such complex operations. 2 teams arrived about an hour ago and have already begun their mission, accompanied by a guide familiar with the prison's layout. The remaining teams are expected to arrive gradually, delayed by challenging security conditions on the roads and severe traffic congestion. https://x.com/SyriaCivilDef/status/1865886847999910310

As details emerge from SDF and local sources, today’s impressive defense of Manbij is proof that a lightly armed but well-prepared and highly disciplined defender can inflict intolerable losses on a more numerous & much better equipped attacker, even one with total air supremacy. Territories recaptured by the SDF since the SNA's offensive earlier this morning. The Russians pulled its forces from the purple area and that’s how occupied Turkish state back gangs took over that area. Turkish planes are bombing, and Islamic terrorists are attacking from the ground for days, but Manbij has not fallen. For days now also, the all-women units of YPJ have been resisting and repelling all attacks of Turkey backed mercenaries on the Manbij front lines

The high-speed collapse of the Assad regime has left Russians all over stranded. Russian military bloggers say that at this moment Russians are surrounded at several positions, such as Homs and Palmyra, but the situation at their primary bases in Latakia and Tartus as well as in the Syrian capital is absolutely chaotic. Even in the Kurdish regions, where Russians were operating before Assad's fall, the situation is absolutely unclear. The situation is even worse than they describe, since they try to keep OPSEC in order to keep the lives of those cutoff Russians as safe as possible. However, they also say that there is not much hope for those Russians either. They are marooned and on their own. Another Russian military adventure ends in absolute catastrophe. Kurds now control nearly 100% of the oil in Syria, over 50% of wheat production, and dominate the Euphrates. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) a Kurdish-led coalition of U.S.-backed ethnic militias and rebel groups, and serves as the official military wing of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has no interest in the rest of Syria only to establish a Syrian Kurdistan or Rojava (Kurdistan where the sun sets).
The SDF keeps on encircling and neutralising SNA sleeper cells in Manbij. Streets are scattered with dead SNA fighters and across the countryside clashes continue. The Turkish military keeps carrying out air and artillery strikes on Manbij. The SDF is fighting a remarkable battle. In war everything is possible but as of now the SDF maintains the upper hand.

If the Russian bases really are gone soon, then this is good news for sure. Naples HQ will celebrate.
Turkey however will do what it can to prevent the Kurds getting an autonomy zone that could become the core cell of ambitions for a national state beyinbd Syria's borders.
However, its not all rosy, the future of Syria still could turn out to be an Islamist regime. The US and Israel do not currently bomb military installations, depots and chemical weapon facilities inside Syria for no reason.
That because the Kurds have nearly 100% of the oil in Syria, over 50% of wheat production, and dominate the Euphrates, :) that is why they back them same Kurds that defeated Syrian ISIS on the ground with NATO air support. It would have been too nice if they had simply disappeared quietly:
[Der Spiegel] Russia wants to talk to future rulers about bases in Syria. Russia maintains an air force base in Syria and a naval base with warships in the Mediterranean port of Tartus. The presence there is of strategic importance to ruler Vladimir Putin due to the access to the Mediterranean. It seems uncertain what will happen to the bases in view of the situation in Syria. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it was still too early to talk about the future of the Russian military bases in Syria. Russia would discuss this with the future rulers in Syria. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the bases are currently in a heightened state of readiness, but there is no threat to the soldiers.

Houthis claim attack on central Israel in response to Gaza ‘massacres’
The Yemeni group says it will continue its ‘support operations’ until Israel ends its war and siege on the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis said in a statement on Monday that their forces struck “a sensitive target of the Israeli enemy”.
An Israeli military statement said a drone hit a building in the city of Yavne after air defence systems failed to detect it and an investigation into the failure is under way.
The Houthis said the operation “achieved its objective” without providing details.
The Houthis – who control large areas of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, and present themselves as the country’s official armed forces – pledged to continue their attacks on Israel until the end of the war on Gaza.

International aid organisations and charities have repeatedly warned of crisis levels of hunger affecting the more than 2 million people in Gaza while Israel has been accused of using starvation as a weapon of war.
"I feel humiliated and degraded, begging every day to secure food for my children. I wish for death daily because of this endless struggle," she said.
"When my children cry from hunger, I sometimes lash out at them in frustration. Last night, I hit my eight-year-old son because he was crying for food," she revealed, her voice filled with anguish.

Demolition work begins at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, devastated by Oct. 7 Hamas attacks
Demolition work begins at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, one of the Gaza border communities worst hit by the Hamas attack on October 7 last year.
Ninety-seven buildings have been designated for demolition, but no decisions have been made yet about 48 buildings in the “Young Generation” neighborhood.
Of 37 residents of this neighborhood, 11 were murdered and seven were kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip. In total, out of the 1,000 residents of Kfar Aza, 62 were killed during the October 7 terror onslaught in southern Israel.
Some 1,200 people were killed, mainly civilians on that day, and 251 were seized as hostages and abducted to the Gaza Strip.
As part of Kfar Aza’s rehabilitation, 400 buildings will be renovated (360 residential buildings and 40 public ones), and damaged infrastructure will be repaired.
The Tekuma Directorate, charged with rehabilitating the Gaza border area, will allocate NIS 200 million (nearly $56 million) to Kfar Aza for the works. These will include building a new Young Generation neighborhood in a different location on the kibbutz, and a new residential neighborhood.
The kibbutz, currently housed in temporary accommodation in Kibbutz Ruhama, has contracted with the management company A. Epstein & Sons (1995) Ltd.

That is not correct, Israel !00% controls and dictates what goes in or out of Gaza. Gaza needs hundreds of containers daily that only can be transport if Israel allows it, and it does not allow Gaza daily basic need to cross the border for more than a year people eat grass and drink polluted water. It is simple they starve because Israel needs its revenge, how long will they continue till it reaches 6 million?
The future is bleak. It’s dark, the future. Where does it lead? To a change in the people’s character. Because if you put most of our young people in the army, they’ll see a paradox. They’ll see that it strives to be a people’s army, like the Nahal unit, involved in building up the country. On the other hand, it’s a brutal occupation force, similar to the Germans in World War II. Similar, not identical. And I’m not talking about their behavior toward the Jews—that was exceptional, with its own particular characteristics. I mean how they acted to the Poles, the Belgians, the Dutch. To all of them... The Czechs. It’s a very negative trait that we acquired, to be ... I’m afraid to say it, so I won’t. We’ve become cruel, to ourselves as well, but mainly to the occupied population, using the excuse of the war against terror.

Israeli drone attack on Gaza aid convoy kills 12 as hunger crisis deepens
The bombing was the latest Israeli attack targeting security guards escorting humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
Medics and local residents told the Reuters news agency that at least 30 people were injured, including several in critical condition, following the Israeli attack on Thursday that targeted civilian guards tasked with securing the aid convoy in the southern part of the war-torn enclave.
The attack is only the latest by Israeli forces on humanitarian aid workers, convoys and those trying to assist the safe entry of food and other supplies into war-torn Gaza, which is gripped by food shortages and fears of famine in the north of the territory, where an Israeli military ground operation and siege have been ongoing for several weeks.
Haoliang Xu, associate administrator of the UN’s Development Programme, said conditions in Gaza were unlike any he had seen before.
“I’ve been to many conflicts and disaster situations or disasters themselves that I experienced, I can say that I’ve never seen the kind of devastation that I’ve seen in Gaza in my career,” he said.
“What I know is that at least for the last month, no fresh fruit and vegetables have been imported” into Gaza, he added.

Palestinians decry ‘barbaric’ Israel strike on Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp. At least 36 people, many members of same family, were killed in the Israeli strike on a Palestinian shelter.
The Government Media Office in Gaza called the Thursday attack a “barbaric and heinous massacre”, noting that most of those killed hailed from the al-Sheikh Ali family.
“The [Israeli] occupation army knew that this is a residential block with many apartment buildings housing dozens of civilians, children, women and displaced people,” the office said.
As of October 2024, the one-year anniversary of the war, Israeli strikes had completely wiped out at least 902 entire families in the Strip, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza.

Israeli troops can remain in Gaza after war, Hamas concedes in major U-turn
Hamas has reportedly agreed to allow Israeli troops to remain in Gaza in a major about-turn that could unblock a hostage deal.
The Palestinian terror group has also handed over a list of hostages, including US citizens, who would be freed under a ceasefire agreement, according to mediators.
The reversal has raised hopes that a deal could finally be struck after more than a year of fighting, which was sparked by Hamas’s attack on Oct 7 that killed 1,200 Israelis.
The fundamental sticking point blocking a deal has been over what a ceasefire would look like in practice.
Israel has taken control of more parts of Gaza since the war broke out last year, including the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egyptian border, as well as the Netzarim Corridor, which divides the north and south of the territory.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, believes these areas should remain under Israeli control after any ceasefire, something Hamas had previously refused to agree to.

If Israel wants to really solve it t could and can but after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin it has walked an apartheid path, I fear nobody in Israel can change this any more it is in a loop of revenge and violence. They do not see another way, both are in an existential hate revenge circle.Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. This is intended to prevent excessive revenge, punishments were meant to be proportional to the crime. In personal matters, however, Jesus sets a very different standard. In response to insults and unfair treatment, Christians are to endure, not retaliate. Both from the same forefather has lost it. Both brothers are still fighting each other
It's a shame the Jews don't accept Christ/New Testament.
It is also found in the Old Testament books of Exodus and Leviticus. For both passages, the phrase is used in the circumstance of a court case before a civil authority such as a judge. “An eye for an eye” was thus intended to be a guiding ethic for legislators and judges; it was not meant to advocate vengeance. I am no belieber, but this Israeli government is so orthodox its policy is an oxymoron.

Israel bombards hospital, school in Gaza, a day after Nuseirat massacre
Israel has killed dozens over past day as it continues to bomb and burn homes in northern Gaza and strikes Khan Younis.
Israel is still attacking schools, medical targets and homes across the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring several people just one day after dozens were massacred in a strike on Nuseirat camp.
Dawn raids on Saturday killed four members of the Saadallah family in their home in Jabalia.
Ethnic cleansing?
Abu Azzoum also said Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoon in the north of the Strip were “under constant attack by the Israeli ground forces, which [have continued] operations for more than 17 days so far”.
Israel has imposed a total siege on several neighbourhoods in northern Gaza, prompting accusations that it is pushing to permanently displace Palestinians and ethnically cleanse the area.
Muhannad Hadi, United Nations humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, decried in a statement on Friday the “rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian situation” in Gaza.
“In recent days, multiple strikes across the Gaza Strip have resulted in scores of reported fatalities and numerous injuries,” he said.
“Women and children continue to be among the casualties. Such incidents are further reminders of the unbearable human cost of the conflict.”

Israel says it has repelled drone attack from Yemen
Israel has repelled a new drone attack from Yemen, the military said on Monday morning, with a naval vessel in the Mediterranean reportedly shooting down the airborne device before it could enter Israeli territory.
The Houthi militia in Yemen, which is allied with Israel's arch-enemy Iran, like the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement, has continued its attacks on Israel, approximately 1,800 kilometres away, even after the ceasefire in Lebanon.
The militia claims it operates in support of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has been waging war against the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas since the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
A week ago, a house in Israel was reportedly hit by a drone attack originating from Yemen.
In July, a man in Tel Aviv was killed when he was struck by a device launched from Yemen.
In response to the Houthi attacks in July and September, Israel has attacked targets in Yemen, including power plants and a port, reportedly resulting in multiple fatalities.

Gaza ceasefire talks heat up again amid deadly Israeli attacks
Israel has said it will maintain military control over Gaza just like in the occupied West Bank even if there is a deal. Israel, Hamas and international stakeholders are engaged in what are seen as the most serious talks in months over a potential ceasefire deal in the besieged Gaza Strip, where dozens of Palestinians continue to be killed by Israeli attacks daily.
At least 45,097 Palestinians have been killed and 107,244 others wounded in more than 14 months of Israeli attacks on Gaza that began after at least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive. Nearly half of the captives have since been released under a weeklong pause in fighting last year.
Israel Katz, the Israeli defence minister, told Knesset lawmakers on Monday that a deal was “closer than ever”, but clarified a day later that after the army defeats Hamas, it will “control security in Gaza with full freedom to act”.
The Israeli military launches many violent daily raids across the West Bank, routinely killing, wounding or arresting Palestinians and demolishing their homes.
There were also multiple casualties after Israeli forces bombed a tent in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.
The humanitarian situation in the territory continues to be catastrophic as the Israeli military keeps blocking most aid, especially to the north, which has been under a heavy siege and blockade for more than 70 days.
This comes as the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted on Wednesday to pass a resolution for Palestinian statehood, with 172 countries voting in favour and only eight – including Israel and the US – opposing it.

Irish support for Palestinians stands firm, despite Israeli anger
Israel may have withdrawn its ambassador, but Irish support for Palestinians is deep-rooted. Ireland’s decision to join South Africa’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza continues to feed a diplomatic storm that, to many observers, has been years in the making.
On Monday, following Israel’s decision to close its embassy in Ireland, the newly appointed Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar lashed out at IrelandÂ’s Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Simon Harris, accusing him of anti-Semitism. “There is a difference between criticism,” Saar said, “and anti-Semitism based on the delegitimisation and dehumanisation of Israel and double standards towards Israel as opposed to other countries. This is how Ireland allowed itself to behave towards Israel.”
Responding to the furore, Harris told reporters in Dublin that Ireland would not be silenced, stressing Ireland had remained consistent throughout the war in its support for Israel’s “right to defend itself” within the limits of international law.
However, “You know what I think is reprehensible?,” Harris caveated, “Killing children, I think that’s reprehensible. You know what I think is reprehensible? Seeing the scale of civilian deaths that we’ve seen in Gaza. You know what I think is reprehensible? People being left to starve and humanitarian aid not flowing.”
On Tuesday, the widely read Times of Israel ran a blog piece entitled, Why the Irish Hate the Jews, in which the author Lisa Liel stated that it was Ireland’s ingrained Christianity, a religion she characterised as “inherently anti semitic” that had led to it objecting to Israel’s killing of more than 45,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
The row with Ireland “definitely doesn’t undermine the government or the support to Netanyahu”, Cassif said, “And even the media hardly covers it. You know, it is the usual, the ordinary drill: every time that there is a criticism from one angle or another it is immediately [branded] anti-Semitism and all that hogwash,” he said.

Gaza ceasefire talks in final stage, Palestinian negotiator tells BBC
After months of deadlock, there are new signs that Israel and Hamas could be moving closer to a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the indirect negotiations told the BBC that talks were in a "decisive and final phase".
Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, has also said an agreement is closer than ever.
In recent weeks, the US, Qatar and Egypt have resumed their mediation efforts – reporting greater willingness by both sides in this 14-month war to conclude a deal.
An Israeli delegation described as "working level" is currently in the Qatari capital Doha amid a flurry of diplomatic comings and goings in the region.
The Palestinian official outlined a three-phase plan which would see civilians and women soldiers held hostage in Gaza released in the first 45 days, with Israeli forces pulling out of city centres, the coastal road and the strategic strip of land along the border with Egypt.
There would be a mechanism for displaced Gazans to be able to return to the north of the territory, the official said.
A second stage would see remaining hostages freed and troops withdrawn before the third stage ending the war.
Of 96 hostages still held in Gaza, 62 are assumed by Israel to still be alive.
The plan appears to be based on the deal US President Joe Biden outlined on 31 May and reports from all sides stress there are key details to work out.
A round of talks in mid-October failed to produce a deal, with Hamas rejecting a short-term ceasefire proposal.
According to his spokesman, Katz told members of the Israeli parliament's foreign affairs committee on Monday: "We have not been this close to an agreement on the hostages since the previous deal," referring to an exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners in Israel in November 2023.
He has since written on X: "My position on Gaza is clear. After we defeat Hamas's military and governmental power in Gaza, Israel will have security control over Gaza with full freedom of action," comparing this to the situation in the occupied West Bank.
"We will not allow any terrorist activity against Israeli communities and Israeli citizens from Gaza. We will not allow a return to the reality of before 7 October."
Such comments are likely to be seen as problematic by negotiators trying to bridge gaps with Hamas. However, in Israel, they are seen as vital to guarantee the support of far-right Israeli cabinet ministers who have previously warned they would not agree to what they have described as a "reckless" deal in Gaza.
The Palestinian Islamist armed group Hamas, which governed Gaza, carried out an unprecedented cross-border attack in southern Israel on 7 October 2023. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 others abducted.
More than 100 hostages have been freed through negotiations or Israeli military rescue operations.
On 7 December, it is understood from Palestinian sources that Israel stopped aircraft movement and drone surveillance over the territory for six hours at the request of mediators, allowing Hamas to collect information about the hostages.
Pro-Qatari newspaper al-Araby al-Jadeed then reported that Hamas had handed a list of sick and elderly Israeli hostages as well as those with US citizenship to Egyptian intelligence officials. The paper said there were also the names of Palestinian prisoners that the group was demanding as part of the deal.
At the outset of the war in Gaza, Israel pledged to destroy Hamas's governing and military capabilities. More than 45,000 Palestinians have since been killed according to figures from the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, which are seen as reliable by the UN and others.
Most of the 2.3 million population of Gaza has been displaced, there has been widespread destruction and amid an ongoing struggle to get aid to those in need, there is now mass hunger.
Donald Trump's victory in November's US presidential election has given a new push to diplomatic efforts.
At a news conference on Monday, he again warned that a ceasefire deal should be reached before he takes office, saying otherwise, "it's not going to be pleasant."

Israel committing ‘acts of genocide’ by cutting off water in Gaza, HRW says
Human Rights Watch says Israel is intentionally cutting off water supplies and destroying infrastructure in Gaza.
Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of committing “acts of genocide” by denying clean water to Palestinians in Gaza, and called on the international community to impose targeted sanctions.
In a new report released on Thursday, the New York-based watchdog said that since October 2023 – when Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza – Israeli authorities have “deliberately obstructed Palestinians’ access to the adequate amount of water required for survival in the Gaza Strip”.
The Genocide Convention, enacted following the mass murder of Jews in the Nazi Holocaust, defines the crime of genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”.

The Israeli military said it had carried out airstrikes in Yemen on Thursday after its air force had intercepted a missile fired from Yemen overnight.
The strikes hit military targets belonging to the Houthi militants on the western coast and inland Yemen, the Israeli army said.
Earlier, warning sirens sounded in several areas in central Israel, including Tel Aviv, after a missile was fired from Yemen into Israeli territory. The army said the sirens were triggered because of possible falling rocket fragments.
Recently, a house in Israel was hit by a drone strike from Yemen. In July, a man in Tel Aviv was killed when he was struck by a projectile from Yemen.
In retaliation for Houthi attacks, Israel targeted sites in Yemen in July and September, including power stations and a port, resulting in several fatalities.

GENOCIDE IS TAKING PLACE IN GAZA!
Israel has carried out a series of attacks on northern and central Gaza that killed at least 25 people, including children, as a leading rights group accused it of committing “acts of genocide” by denying clean water to Palestinians.
A separate report by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) published on Thursday found “clear signs of ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, particularly in the northern part of the strip.
“Our firsthand observations of the medical and humanitarian catastrophe inflicted on Gaza are consistent with the descriptions provided by an increasing number of legal experts and organisations concluding that genocide is taking place in Gaza,” the organisation said.

How Facebook restricted news in Palestinian territories
Facebook has severely restricted the ability of Palestinian news outlets to reach an audience during the Israel-Gaza war, according to BBC research.
In a comprehensive analysis of Facebook data, we found that newsrooms in the Palestinian territories - in Gaza and the West Bank - had suffered a steep drop in audience engagement since October 2023.
The BBC has also seen leaked documents showing that Instagram - another Meta-owned platform - increased its moderation of Palestinian user comments after October 2023.
Meta - the owner of Facebook - says that any implication that it deliberately suppressed particular voices is "unequivocally false".
Since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war, just a few outside reporters have been allowed to enter the Palestinian coastal territory of Gaza from the outside, and they were only able to do so escorted by the Israeli army.
Social media has filled the gap for those wanting to hear more voices from inside Gaza. Facebook pages for news outlets such as Palestine TV, Wafa news agency and Palestinian Wattan News - which operate out of the West Bank territory - became a vital source of updates for many around the world.
BBC News Arabic compiled engagement data on the Facebook pages of 20 prominent Palestinian-based news organisations in the year leading up to the 7 October Hamas attacks on Israel, and in the year since.
Engagement is a key measure of how much impact a social media account is having and how many people are seeing its content. It includes such factors as the number of comments, reactions and shares.

Israel kills 7 children from one family in air strike on Gaza
UNRWA says Gaza has become a ‘graveyard’ as Israel continues its bombing campaign amid worsening living conditions. An Israeli air strike has killed 12 members of a family, including seven children, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Civil Defence rescue agency has reported.
Pope Francis on Saturday condemned the bombing of children in Gaza as “cruelty”. “Yesterday children were bombed. This is cruelty, this is not war,” he said. “I want to say it because it touches my heart.”
At least eight people were killed by a drone missile that hit a residential building in the market street of Nuseirat refugee camp, according to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
Four people were also killed in an air raid on Beit Hanoon, Al Jazeera correspondents said. The victims were two girls and their parents.
The bodies of three brothers were also retrieved from the rubble of a bombed home near Kamal Adwan Hospital. An entire society here is now a graveyard … Over two million people are trapped.

Gaza war victims take legal action against BP over oil supply to Israel
Palestinian victims of the war in Gaza are taking legal action against BP for running a pipeline that supplies much of Israel’s crude oil.
The claimants have sent the British oil company a letter before claim, alleging it is breaching its stated commitments to human rights under international law.
BP owns and operates the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, through which Azerbaijan supplies Israel with crude oil. The pipeline, which runs through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, from where the oil is then transported by ship, provides 28% of Israel’s crude oil supply.
Oil supplies are critical for Israel’s military operation, and it has been reported that oil from this pipeline is being sent to a refinery that produces jet fuel for military planes which are dropping munitions on Gaza.
The letter states: “Israel relies heavily on crude oil and refined petroleum imports to run its large fleet of fighter jets, tanks and other military vehicles and operations, as well as the bulldozers implicated in clearing Palestinian homes and olive groves to make way for unlawful Israeli settlements. Some fuel from refineries goes directly to the armed forces, while much of the rest appears to go to ordinary gas stations where military personnel can refuel their vehicles under a government contract.” It asks that any case is heard in a British court as BP and the claimants are based in England.
The legal letter claims BP has violated the UN guiding principles on business and human rights, as well as the prohibition of complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity under customary international law and obligations under its own policies, which require BP to avoid contributing to human rights abuses. A UN commission has found that Israel has committed war crimes during the conflict in Gaza. The UN general assembly has also approved resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire. At least 42,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Tayab Ali, the head of international law at Bindmans law firm and director at the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, both of which are working with the claimants, said: “This legal action marks a new phase in accountability for those that are complicit in alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The evidence against BP demonstrates a clear failure to adhere to its own human rights policies and international law.
“By facilitating the transport of oil that fuels military operations in Gaza, BP has contributed to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the region. Our clients seek justice for the profound suffering and loss they have endured and call on BP to act responsibly by immediately halting its involvement.”
The lead claimants are people of Palestinian origin who have suffered vast losses as a result of the conflict. They include a British citizen who lost 16 family members to Israeli airstrikes and whose surviving family members in Gaza face dire humanitarian conditions. Another claimant is also British-Palestinian, and their relatives in Gaza have suffered fatalities and displacement, with some dying due to lack of access to medical care and essential supplies. Other claimants include those who have faced catastrophic physical and psychological harm including amputations and loss of family members.
The legal letter demands BP immediately ceases supply and facilitation of oil supply to Israel through the pipeline, and that the oil company provides full disclosure of relevant documents, including policies, contracts, and risk assessments relating to BP’s operations in connection with oil supplied to Israel. The claimants are also asking for admission of liability and a commitment to mediation for assessing damages and a public apology for the harm caused.

Israel forcibly evacuates Gaza hospital and detains medical staff
The last major functioning hospital in northern Gaza was forcibly evacuated by the Israeli military on Friday after dozens of people were reportedly killed in Israeli strikes targeting the area.
Medical staff, including the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital, have also been detained, Gaza health officials said on Saturday.
The hospital director, Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, was among the first to report that about 50 people had been killed in Israeli air strikes targeting the vicinity of the hospital on Friday.
The IDF had said it was carrying out an operation in the area, alleging the hospital was a "Hamas terrorist stronghold".
On Friday, patients at the hospital were forcibly moved to the nearby Indonesian Hospital which doctors warn is damaged and unsuitable due to a lack of power generators and water.
Eid Sabbah, head of the nursing department at Kamal Adwan, told the BBC the military had ordered the evacuation around 07:00 on Friday, giving the hospital about 15 minutes to move patients and staff into the courtyard.
Israeli troops then entered the hospital and removed the remaining patients, he said.
The IDF said it had "facilitated the secure evacuation of civilians, patients and medical personnel" before beginning the operation.
Seriously ill patients were moved to the nearby Indonesian Hospital, itself evacuated earlier in the week, which medics have described as non-functional.
"You can't call it a hospital, it's more of a shelter. It's not equipped for patients," Gaza's deputy minister of health, Dr Abu-Al Rish, told the BBC on Friday.
Dr Sabbah, from Kamal Adwan Hospital, said: "It's dangerous because there are patients in the ICU department in a coma and in need of ventilation machines and moving them will put them in danger."
He had said critically ill patients needed to be moved in specialised vehicles.
The World Health Organization said the raid "has put this last major health facility in north Gaza out of service".
"Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid," it posted on X on Friday.
Nadav Shoshani, international spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said in a post on Friday evening on X that a "small fire broke out in an empty building inside the hospital that is under control".
This was when IDF troops were not inside the hospital, he said, adding that "after preliminary examination, no connection was found between IDF activity to the fire".
The director of Kamal Adwan hospital had said on Friday that approximately 50 people had been killed, including five medical staff, in a series of Israeli air strikes targeting the vicinity of the hospital.
The statement from Dr Hussam Abu Safiya said a building opposite the hospital was targeted by Israeli warplanes, leading to the death of a paediatrician and a lab technician, as well as their families.
He said a third staff member who worked as a maintenance technician was targeted and killed as he rushed to the scene of the first strike.
Two of the hospital's paramedics were 500m (1,640ft) away from the hospital when they were targeted and killed by another strike, the statement continued, with their bodies remaining in the street with no-one able to reach them.
The Israeli military said on Friday morning that it was "unaware of strikes in the area of Kamal Adwan hospital" and was looking into the reports that staff had been killed.
Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahia has been under a tightening Israeli blockade imposed on parts of northern Gaza since October, when the military said it had launched an offensive to stop Hamas from regrouping there.
The UN has said the area is under a "near-total siege" as the Israeli military heavily restricts access of aid deliveries to an area where an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people remain.
In recent days, the hospital's administrators have issued desperate pleas appealing to be protected, as they say the facility has become a regular target for Israeli shelling and explosives.
Oxfam said that attempts by aid agencies to deliver supplies to the area since October had been unsuccessful because of "deliberate delays and systematic obstructions" by the Israeli military.

IAF eliminates Nukhba commander who infiltrated Kibbutz Nir Oz on Oct. 7
The Israel Air Force (IAF) eliminated Nukhba Platoon Commander Abd al-Hadi Sabah of the Western Khan Yunis Brigade, the military said on Tuesday.
The strike was conducted based on intelligence from the IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).
Abd al-Hadi Sabah was one of the terrorist leaders who infiltrated Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 and, throughout the war, led numerous terror attacks against IDF soldiers, the IDF noted.

Israeli strikes kill at least 30 in Gaza as ceasefire talks to resume in Qatar
Israeli strikes killed at least 30 people in Gaza, including children, overnight and into Friday, hospital staff said, as often-stalled ceasefire talks to end the Israel-Hamas war were set to resume in Qatar.
Sirens sounded across Israel for missiles fired from Yemen.
Staff at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said that more than a dozen women and children were killed in strikes in central Gaza, including in Nuseirat, Zawaida, Maghazi and Deir al-Balah.
Dozens of people were killed across the enclave the previous day, bringing the total killed in the past 24 hours to 56.
“We woke up to the missile strike. We found the whole house disintegrated,” Abdul Rahman Al-Nabrisi said in the Maghazi refugee camp.
The Israeli army said in a statement on Friday that during the past day, it had struck dozens of Hamas gathering points and command centres throughout Gaza.
The army asserted that measures were taken to mitigate civilian harm, such as using aerial surveillance.
And it issued a warning for people to leave an area of central Gaza immediately, saying it would attack following launches from there toward Israel.
The military said that a few projectiles entered Israel from central and northern Gaza, with no injuries reported.
Freelance journalist Omar al-Derawi was among those killed on Friday.
Associated Press reporters saw friends and colleagues mourning over his body, with a press vest laid on his shroud.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said last month that more than 130 Palestinian reporters have been killed since the start of the war.
Israel has not allowed foreign journalists to enter Gaza except on military embeds.
Israelis also woke up to attacks.
Israel said that missiles were fired into the country from Yemen, setting off air raid sirens in Jerusalem and central Israel and sending people scrambling to shelters.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Israel’s army said that a missile was intercepted.
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen often claim responsibility.
Efforts at ceasefire negotiations were expected to resume on Friday.

Hamas releases video of Israeli hostage Liri Albag as ceasefire talks resume
Hamas has posted a video showing a 19-year-old Israeli captive, as indirect talks between the group and Israel on a ceasefire and hostage release deal resume in Qatar.
The footage shows Liri Albag calling for the Israeli government to reach a deal.
She was taken hostage along with six other female conscript soldiers at the Nahal Oz army base on the Gaza border during Hamas's October 2023 attack. Five of them remain in captivity.
The announcement of renewed talks came as Israel intensified attacks on Gaza, with the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry saying on Sunday that 88 people had been killed in bombardment over the past 24 hours.
One strike on a home in Gaza City on Saturday killed 11 people including seven children, according to the Gaza civil defence agency.
Images showed residents searching through rubble for survivors and the bodies of the dead wrapped in shrouds.
"A huge explosion woke us up. Everything was shaking," neighbour Ahmed Mussa told AFP.
"It was home to children, women. There wasn't anyone wanted or who posed a threat."
The Israeli military said on Sunday that it had struck more than 100 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip over the past two days and "eliminated dozens of Hamas terrorists".
Responding to the video showing their daughter, Liri Albag's parents said it had torn their hearts to pieces and they appealed to the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "make decisions as if your own children were there".
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters, which represents hostage families, said the sign of life from Liri was "harsh and undeniable proof of the urgency in bringing all the hostages home".
In a call to Lira Albag's parents, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said his country's delegation would remain at the negotiating table until all hostages were returned home.
Israeli officials have previously described the release of such videos by Hamas as psychological warfare.

'Stop shooting! My daughter is dead': Woman killed as West Bank power struggle rages
Just before New Year, 21-year-old Shatha al-Sabbagh was out buying chocolate for her family's children from a shop in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.
The "fearless" journalism student – who wanted to shed light on the suffering of the Palestinians – was with her mother, two young nephews and another relative.
"She was laughing and saying we'll be up all night tonight," her mother recalls.
Then she was shot in the head.
For Shatha's mother Umm al-Motassem, the pain is still raw. She stops to take a breath.
"Shatha's eyes were wide open. It looked like she was staring at me while lying on her back with blood gushing from her head.
"I started screaming, 'Stop shooting! My daughter is dead. My daughter is dead.'"
But the shooting lasted for around 10 minutes. Shatha died in a pool of her own blood.
Shatha's family holds the Palestinian Authority's (PA) security forces fully responsible for her killing, saying their area is controlled by the PA.
"It couldn't have been anyone other than PA... because they have such a heavy presence in our neighbourhood - no-one else could come or go."
But the PA blames "outlaws" - the term they use for members of the Jenin Battalion, made up of fighters from armed groups including Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas.

Hezbollah is finished in Lebanon.
There is reason to rejoice in Lebanon today. The terrorist organization Hezbollah is no longer a power factor in the country.
Hezbollah a terrorist organization. A state within a state in Lebanon. Is past.
There is today an agreement in parliament to appoint the chief of defense and army chief Joseph Aoun as the country's new president.
Joseph Aoun is a Christian. It must be the President of Lebanon according to the Constitution of Lebanon. But he is very popular among all groups except Hezbollah.
All groupings in the country agree on him. Lebanon has not had a president since October 2022 because Hezbollah has repeatedly vetoed it.
Now Hezbollah no longer plays a significant role. After several votes, there was agreement on Aoun, who has the support of major players such as Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Aoun's main task will be to dismantle Hezbollah completely. If Hezbollah will continue to have weapons, it will be as an integral and loyal part of the Lebanese army; it is not possible to have a state within the state, as has been the case for years.
In this way, the Lebanese and Israelis can also breathe a little easier. Northern Israel has received countless rockets fired by Hezbollah.
Furthermore, it is worth noting - and one cannot avoid noticing this at all if you travel to Lebanon
- that Hezbollah no longer has control over Beirut's international airport.
The airport itself has been a lifeline for the terrorists and their sponsor, the Imams' Iran.
They have used the airport in Beirut to receive dollars and weapons, and to export terror and drugs. Now there is Lebanese control at the airport. The imams' flights are turned away and the cars of their diplomats are stopped and searched.
Another clear sign that Hezbollah is a thing of the past in Lebanon.
On the other hand, there is every reason to wish Joseph Aoun congratulations on his appointment as president and good luck with the task.
(Written by a Danish politician who came from Syria when he was 5-7 years old)
Markus
^Western-backed Aoun is supported by France, the United States and Saudi Arabia, among others. Those countries reportedly exerted pressure to get Aoun elected. In his speech, he said that the right to have arms is reserved only for the state and that he will work to ensure that. By this, he would refer to the heavily armed Shiite movement Hezbollah, among others.
Excellent news guys!!! :Kaleun_Applaud:

Gaza war death toll could be significantly higher, researchers say
The Palestinian death toll from the war in Gaza could be substantially higher than official figures reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, research published in The Lancet medical journal suggests.
The UK-led study covered the first nine months of the war, external, which began when Hamas gunmen attacked Israel on 7 October 2023.
It used data from the ministry, an online survey of relatives reporting fatalities, and obituaries. It estimated that up until 30 June 2024, 64,260 Palestinians died from traumatic injury, meaning an under-reporting of deaths by 41%.
The Israeli embassy in the UK said "any information that derives from Gaza cannot be trusted" and served Hamas.
The UN treats the health ministry's figures as reliable.
The ministry's figures do not distinguish between combatants and civilians, but a recent report by the UN said the majority of verified victims over a six month period were women and children.
Israel says Hamas's figures cannot be trusted. In August, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had "eliminated over 17,000 terrorists", though it is unclear how it arrived at this figure. The IDF insists it only targets combatants and tries to avoid or minimise civilian casualties.
Israel is not allowing international journalists from media organisations, including the BBC, independent access to Gaza, making it difficult to verify the facts on the ground.
The team behind the latest study used a statistical method called "capture-recapture", a technique which has been used to evaluate deaths in other conflicts.
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine looked at how many people turned up repeatedly in different attempts to count deaths. The level of overlap between those lists suggested that the number of deaths directly caused by traumatic injury in the conflict could be significantly higher than hospital figures published by the Ministry of Health.
Gaza's health ministry issues updated death tolls from the war daily. It compiles the figures from deaths recorded in hospitals, deaths reported by family members, and deaths from "reliable media reports".
The report in The Lancet estimated a death toll between 55,298–78,525 people, compared to 37,877 reported by the health ministry.
The report's figures could be meaningfully higher or lower depending on the technical details of the analysis.
For example, identifying deaths by "traumatic injury" in each set of data could be tricky. Getting it wrong could push the study's estimates higher or lower.
The research also said 59% of those killed for whom data on sex and age was available were women, children and the elderly.
The war in Gaza was triggered by Hamas's attack in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. Israel launched a massive military offensive on Gaza in response.
The health ministry says 46,006 people, most of them civilians, have been killed by the Israeli campaign.

Israeli soldiers refuse to fight until Gaza ceasefire is signed
A growing number of Israeli soldiers have threatened to stop fighting against Hamas in Gaza unless their government secures a ceasefire.
Some 200 troops signed a letter claiming that the 15-month conflict crossed ethical lines and saying they would refuse to fight unless a truce was signed.
Seven soldiers who have already laid down their arms told the Associated Press that Palestinians were being indiscriminately killed and houses destroyed, despite no threat being present.
Vilk, one of the officers in the armoured corps, said that he would no longer serve after claiming he was instructed to shoot any unauthorised person in an Israeli-controlled buffer zone in Gaza.
Yuval Green, 27, another officer, said that he abandoned his post in January 2024 after seeing soldiers desecrate homes and steal Gazans’ belongings as souvenirs over a two-month period in the enclave.
While their movement is relatively small, the soldiers said it was the tip of the iceberg and that many others wanted to come forward.
The rare act of defiance against the Israeli military, which requires its troops to steer clear of politics, comes as a ceasefire and hostage release deal appears imminent following months of stalled negotiations.
A “final round” of truce talks aimed at “finalising” the last details of the proposal are expected to start on Tuesday in Qatar, a source briefed on the negotiations told AFP.

Israel, Hamas reach agreement on ceasefire and hostage release
On Wednesday, January 15, Israel and Hamas reached an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
This is reported by Reuters and CNN, Censor.NET reports.
It is noted that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month war in Gaza.
The agreement, which has not yet been officially announced, provides for a six-week initial phase of the ceasefire and includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinians held by Israel, an official briefed on the talks told Reuters.
According to the foreign minister, the Israeli government is expected to vote on the deal on Thursday, January 15.
The agreement was the result of months of negotiations mediated by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with the support of the United States and was reached on the eve of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
Hamas told Reuters that its delegation had handed over to the mediators its agreement to a ceasefire and hostage return.
CNN writes that according to the agreement, Hamas and affiliated militant groups are expected to release 33 hostages taken in Israel during the attacks of October 7, 2023.
In return, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Once the agreement is confirmed, Palestinian civilians are expected to be able to return to northern Gaza, and there will be a massive influx of humanitarian aid into the strip, where residents have long faced dire humanitarian conditions. Source: https://censor.net/en/n3530470

...then both sides will presumably face I.C.C. Hague charges for "crimes against humanity" ?? Even IDF soldiers are refusing to fight, citing illegal actions conducted in Gaza. As a show of equality only 33 Hamas prisoners should be released for 33 Israeli hostages?? It will prevent inevitable troubles down the line. The more so as Israel has finally emphiszed equality after 8 decades: the IDF announced that it would begin the process of conscription for 3,000 ultra-Orthodox men aged 18-26 in the wake of last month’s High Court ruling that service exemptions, which were previously granted to Haredim, were illegal. The first thousand went out on July 21 and the military is preparing to send out its second batch. Bottom Line: cannon fodder in Gaza is cannon fodder reguardless of one's (63,000!) Ignoring the hostage families' understandable interests, this is a bad way for Israel how to end the war. Its postulated main objective - ending Hamas - has not been acchieved, and they trade prisoners on ground of ratios of 30 terrorists for 1 victim, which in a way is an insane thing to do. Hamas will reframe the narrative and will later pose as a victor, the one whoi successfully challenged Goliath and got away with it, and politically the situation will lead to where things were two, three years ago.
And no, two states will not solve anything. It would make things even worse for Israel.
Lets see if the truce and deal lasts. A self-running thing this is not.

Agreed, the ration of 1:30 is ridiculous and can only serve to swell the ranks of the terrorists.
Hamas will be reluctant to release all of the hostages for as long as possible because without them they have no bargaining chip and either way when the truth comes out of how many they have that are still living will only serve to fire up the revenge card for the Israeli far right.
I couldn't help but notice the rats leaving their tunnels at the beginning of the ceasefire but as per normal they had their faces covered.
This matter is not over by a long way and I'd be surprised to see it ever reach the third phase of rebuilding and should it come to pass then let the arabs provide the funding.

Three Israeli hostages have been handed to the Red Cross in Gaza, before their transfer to Israel, the Israeli military confirms
Before the handover, Hamas named them as 31-year-old Doron Steinbrecher, dual British-Israeli Emily Damari, 28, and 24-year-old Romi Gonen
Hamas says for every hostage released, 30 Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli jails
The long-awaited ceasefire in Gaza came into force after a last-minute delay, with displaced Palestinians beginning to return to the cities they fled
In the hours the ceasefire was delayed, Israel continued hitting Gaza, killing 19 more people, according to the Hamas-run civil defence agency.

Fact or Fiction: Israel needs fake nurses to justify killing Gaza babies
Israel knows it risks losing global support over its slaughter of children. So it’s turning to social media disinformation that’s sloppy but often effective.
In Gaza, a child is killed every 10 minutes. Since October 7, Israel has killed more than 4,000 children. Now, premature babies at Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital are dying because the institution is out of power after over a month of Israel’s siege, and so is unable to operate incubators.
As a result, Israel’s propaganda and disinformation machine is finding new ways to justify the killing of children and the bombing of medical facilities. Usually, Israel’s first response to accusations of atrocities is denial. When that fails, the second strategy is to blame Hamas or other Palestinian armed groups for Palestinian deaths.
But no amount of manufactured videos or planted “evidence” can obscure the truth. Children are dying by the hundreds in Gaza, their blood spilled by Israel’s bombs, bullets and siege.

Israel’s top general resigns over 7 October Hamas attack – as military launches major West Bank offensive
Israel's top general has announced his resignation over the security failures that allowed Hamas to attack southern Israel on 7 October 2023 – saying he will stand down in March.
Lt General Herzi Halevi, the Israeli armed forces chief of staff, is the most prominent Israeli official to resign over the attack. The move comes just days into a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza war that was triggered by the attack, during which around 1,200 people were killed and another 250 people taken hostage. Israel's retaliatory offensive in Gaza has killed 47,000 Palestinians according to the enclave's health ministry and forced 90 per cent of its 2.3 million residents from their homes.

Genocide extension in Jenin now !:D
Israeli army blocked all four main entrances to the city and its refugee camp with earth mounds, preventing entry and exit. Wafa news agency also reported that Israeli forces set fire to homes in the camp and blocked civil defence teams from reaching the area to put out the flames.
Israeli forces have been stepping up their operation across the occupied West Bank since January 21, just days after the ceasefire in Gaza.
The deadly Israeli operations in recent days raise serious concerns about unnecessary or disproportionate use of force, including methods and means developed for war fighting, in violation of international human rights law, norms and standards applicable to law enforcement operations.
Israel says eliminating armed Palestinian fighters in the occupied West Bank is part of its overarching goals for the war on Gaza. United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese warns that IsraelÂ’s genocide would not be confined to Gaza if the military offensive in the West Bank does not end.

To indiscriminately slaughter 1200 unsuspecting mostly civilians, to kidnap and partially murder three hundred, and to rape and torture hundreds more to death in unimaginably bestial ways, to mutilate them while they are still alive and to cut them into pieces while they are being raped, and to give the murderers the task of massacring children and women in particular because that generates a lot of publicity, is not "defense", but bestial, ultra-brutal mass murder, no less evil and barbaric in spirit than what the Nazis did in the camps. Moreover, it was counterproductive. To put it mildly. And it has ensured that people like me, when we see how many Palestinian Arabs - the majority! - approve of it, are now completely indifferent to the future fate of this ethnic group. I don't care anymore. I am not interested anymore. Not one bit. I react to crimes of this bestial brutality with absolute mercilessness and ice-cold determination. Any many Israelis obviously see it this way, too. Like they also have no reason to just forgive the holocaust.
You should be ashamed of the crap you keep spreading. Shame on you.
The Arabs could have had a free and prospering society in their places already since decades. Israel pulled out of the Gaza strip twenty years ago.
It did not take five months before the first missiles flew from Gaza into Israel. And since then... They do nto want just living their lives and enjoying freedoml peace, moderate wealth. They want the Jews out and dead and overwhelmed. And they raise their children in murderous hate from youngest childhood on.
Now many people like me dont care anymore if they themsleves are dead and overwhelmed instead. Who cares. The world certainly doesn't need them, even the other Arabs dont want to deal with them.
Israel now safeguards itself against the events of Oct. 7th repeating themselves. Thats no nice job, and it cannot be done with surgical sterility. So be it. And they teach everybody a lesson. If you mess with us, you pay the price.

In 2024, the Israeli military continued to kill, wound, starve, and forcibly displace thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and to destroy their homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure at a scale unprecedented in recent history. Nearly all Palestinians in Gaza were forcibly displaced, and all faced severe food insecurity or famine.
In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
The number of Palestinian dead stem from IsraelÂ’s continued use of excessive lethal force, including airstrikes and drone-launched missiles.
The Israeli authorities continued to commit the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution through their repression of Palestinians. In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion finding IsraelÂ’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful, that Israel is in breach of the prohibition on racial discrimination and apartheid, that it should evacuate and dismantle all settlements and make reparation to Palestinians, including compensation and allowing Palestinians it displaced after 1967 to return to their homes, and that other governments should cease any recognition of, trade or investment in settlements and work to bring the illegal situation in the occupied territory to an end.
In January, March, and May, the International Court of Justice issued provisional measures as part of a case filed by South Africa that Israel violated its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention in Gaza.
Israeli authorities apply Israeli civil law to settlers but govern West Bank Palestinians under military law, deny them basic due process, and try them in military courts.
In September, Israel's supreme court ruled in favor of a settler organization to evict a Palestinian family from their homes in East Jerusalem, under a discriminatory law that allows settlers to claim land Jews owned in East Jerusalem before 1948. Palestinians are barred under Israeli law from making analogous land claims in Israel.
Australia, Canada, the EU, the US and the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on violent settlers and settlement entities in the West Bank, but not Israeli officials.
Prominent Palestinian civil society organizations in the West Bank remain outlawed as “terrorist” organizations.
Detention, Torture, and Ill-Treatment of Palestinians
Israeli authorities arbitrarily detained, tortured, inflicted sexual violence on, and denied adequate food and medical care to detained Palestinian men, women, and CHILDREN.
After October 7, Israeli authorities detained incommunicado and abused thousands of Palestinian workers who had been in Israel lawfully. In 2024, Israeli authorities continued TO DEPORT Palestinians arrested in Gaza to facilities inside Israel, including healthcare workers, who reported being tortured and denied food, water and medical care. Israeli news media reported amputations of detainees due to abusive use of restraints, surgeries without anesthesia, and sexual and gender-based violence. At the Sde Teiman military base, nine soldiers were arrested but then released for raping a detainee, who had to be hospitalized.

Hamas names four Israeli female soldiers to be released in hostage deal
(Reuters) - Palestinian militant group Hamas on Friday announced the names of four Israeli women soldiers to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in the second swap under the ceasefire deal in Gaza.
Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy and Liri Albag would be released on Saturday, the group said.
The exchange, expected to begin on Saturday afternoon, follows the release on the ceasefire's first day last Sunday of three Israeli women and 90 Palestinian prisoners, the first such exchange for more than a year.
In the six-week first phase of the Gaza ceasefire, Israel has agreed to release 50 Palestinian prisoners for every female soldier released, officials have said. That suggests that 200 Palestinian prisoners would be released in return for the four.
Since the release of the three women on Sunday and the recovery of the body of an Israeli soldier missing for a decade, Israel says 94 Israelis and foreigners remain held in Gaza.
The ceasefire agreement, worked out after months of on-off negotiations brokered by Qatar and Egypt and backed by the United States, halted the fighting for the first time since a truce that lasted just a week in Nov. 2023.
In the first phase, Hamas has agreed to release 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
In a subsequent phase, the two sides would negotiate the exchange of the remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, which lies largely in ruins after 15 months of fighting and Israeli bombardment.
Israel launched the war following the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, when militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, more than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to health authorities there.

Less than slaves: The Palestinians detained by Israel despite ceasefire
Israel has arrested more Palestinians than it has released as a result of its ceasefire deal with Hamas :D
Since the announcement of the Gaza ceasefire, Israel has arrested at least 95 Palestinians in raids and at checkpoints for no clear reasons across the West Bank, according to Jenna Abu Hasna, a researcher with Addameer, a Palestinian civil society organisation monitoring arrests and detentions in the occupied territory.
Many of them were arrested in the few days around the onset of the ceasefire which took effect on January 19.
The mass incarceration of Palestinians is just one feature of Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank, which also involves expanding illegal Israeli settlements and the mass killing, injuring and dispossession of civilians, according to rights groups and prisoners’ families.
“The situation we are living through is really difficult right now. We are treated as slaves … or even less than slaves,” said Alyeean, from his home.
Every day, the occupation army arrests 30 to 40 or even 50 new prisoners.

Hamas’s hostage-release theatre aims to show it’s undefeated
Gaza: The four Israeli soldiers held by Hamas for 15 months display trilingual “release certificates,” bound like college diplomas.
The camera shows each woman receiving a Hamas pendant and other souvenirs, as if ending a year-abroad programme.
At a rally in Gaza City, Red Cross officials are seated at tables for a signing ceremony, guarded by masked gunmen as patriotic music blares.
Israelis watching the proceedings on TV on Saturday were horrified.
Military spokesman Daniel Hagari called it cruel and cynical, and Minister Orit Struck termed it sickening. Hamas, they said, was giving a final twist of the knife of psychological torture of the hostages, ages 19 and 20.
‘Humiliated and defeated’: Fear, shock grip Israel after unprecedented Hamas assault
Others saw something else: An attempt by the group, deemed terrorists by the US and others, to show that after being pummeled by Israeli forces, it’s still in charge of Gaza — not only militarily but as a functioning administrative state.
That comes at a time when a fresh disagreement between Israel and Hamas is hampering the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza — and as US President Donald Trump threatens to shake up the future of the conflict.
Israeli analysts agree that the visuals from Gaza City’s Palestine Square on Saturday and a week earlier — when three civilian women hostages were released — challenge the country’s goal of defeating Hamas.
Michael Milshtein, a former chief of Palestinian affairs in Israel’s military intelligence, said that for many in Gaza, no matter how much of a price they paid in the brutal war that began in October 2023, “it was worth it in exchange for the blows that Israel took, and for strengthening their national honor.”

Israel's looming Unrwa ban a catastrophe, UN Palestinian refugee agency warns
As Israel prepares to outlaw the main UN agency for Palestinian refugees on Thursday, there are warnings that it could undermine vital aid delivery and long-term chances of peace.
Israeli officials have not spelt out how they will enforce the legislation passed last year by Israel's parliament, which accused Unrwa of being complicit with Hamas - an allegation the agency denied.
"It will be a catastrophe if this ban takes place," says Juliette Touma, communications director of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Unrwa).
"It will deepen and further the suffering of the Palestinian people who rely on the agency for their survival, for their education and healthcare."
Even before 15 months of brutal war left the vast majority of the two million people in Gaza displaced and homeless, most were registered refugees.
Unrwa camps were first set up in Gaza to house Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their land in fighting before and after the state of Israel was created in 1948.
For seven decades, those original refugees and their descendants - as well as a new wave of refugees created by the 1967 Middle East War - have been cared for by Unrwa.
Across the Middle East - in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon as well as the occupied Palestinian territories - there are some six million Palestinian refugees.

Eight Israeli and Thai hostages released from Gaza
Eight more hostages held by Hamas in Gaza have been released amid chaotic scenes as part of the ceasefire deal with Israel.
Three Israelis and five Thai nationals were handed over to the Red Cross by Hamas before being transferred to Israeli forces and taken to Israel.
A total of 110 Palestinians were later released from Israeli prisons, including 32 with life sentences and 30 minors.
Israel delayed their release in response to the way the hostages were treated as they were handed over.
Thursday's releases mean 15 hostages have been freed since the ceasefire came into effect on 19 January. Eighty-two are still being held.
Israeli soldier Agam Berger, 20, was the first to be released on Thursday - led by masked gunmen through a scene of rubble in a stage-managed event in Jabalia, in the north of Gaza.
Crowds of civilians were kept back by armed Hamas fighters as she appeared on a platform and was given a certificate, before being passed to the Red Cross.
She was one of seven women from an unarmed unit of observers who were kidnapped on 7 October 2023, and the last remaining in Gaza.
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square, crowds watching on a big screen cheered.
"I'm thrilled... to see her face, to see her going back to her family. It's exciting," Yahel Oren, who served in the same unit as Ms Berger a decade ago, told the BBC.
Photos released by the Israeli military showed her hugging four other young women from the unit who were released in the previous exchange on Saturday.
In a statement, her family said they could now "begin the healing process" but that "the recovery will not be complete until all the hostages return home".
About two hours later, in Khan Younis in the south of Gaza, the seven other hostages were brought out amid chaotic scenes.
They were led by armed fighters through crowds of cheering spectators, many filming with mobile phones, before being handed over to the Red Cross in waiting vehicles.
It took place symbolically in front of the remains of the home - bombed by Israel - of late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the 7 October attacks. Sinwar was killed by Israeli troops in Rafah in October 2024.
"There was a lot of chaos, there was a lot of pushing," a journalist who covered the handover told the BBC. There were chants of Sinwar's name and for Hamas, he said.
A woman in the crowd said she was "proud of Gaza's men and Gaza's resistance".
In Tel Aviv, people watched anxiously, as they held Israeli flags and photos of the hostages.
In addition to Ms Berger, Israeli civilians Arbel Yehud, 29, and Gadi Moses, 80, and Thai agricultural workers Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Seathao and Surasak Lamnao were freed.
In a sign of the precariousness of the ceasefire, the release of the prisoners was paused by Israel until it received assurances that the scenes which accompanied the release of the hostages in Khan Younis would not be repeated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the "shocking scenes" were "additional proof of the inconceivable brutality of the Hamas terrorist organisation".
The prime minster's office later said it had since received from mediators "a commitment that a safe exit will be guaranteed for our hostages" yet to be released.
The postponement was the latest hitch to hit the delicate and complex reciprocal steps which Israel and Hamas have committed to under the terms of the ceasefire.
Israel delayed by two days allowing hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza after Hamas failed to include Arbel Yehud in the previous round of hostage releases on 25 January.
Two hundred and fifty-one people were taken captive when Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people. The attack triggered a war which has devastated Gaza.
Israel's 15-month military offensive killed 47,460 Palestinians in the territory, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.
Before Thursday, 290 Palestinian prisoners - ranging from those serving long sentences for bombings and other attacks to teenagers held without charge - had been released under the ceasefire.
Most have returned to the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, while about 70 of the most serious offenders have been deported.

‘We can do so much more’: Food aid chief aims to step up relief effort in Gaza as ceasefire delivers hope
The head of a global food relief organisation honoured by the UAE for delivering a crucial lifeline to millions of Palestinians in the Gaza strip says they are "eager to do more" as a ceasefire with Israel holds firm.
The World Central Kitchen (WCK) was announced on Friday as one of three winners of the annual Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, for its remarkable work serving on the front lines to feed communities in areas devastated by disasters and deadly conflicts.
Since being founded in 2010 by Spanish-American chef Jose Andres, WCK has delivered more than 300 million meals to communities in over 30 countries − including more than 70 million meals to Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023.
The fragile truce brokered earlier this month has given relief teams such as WCK fresh impetus in their drive to help those in dire need.

Three Israeli hostages and dozens of Palestinian prisoners released
Three Israeli hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza were released from captivity on Saturday, in exchange for 183 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Yarden Bibas, 34, Ofer Kalderon, 53, and Keith Siegel, 65, were handed over to the Red Cross - the latest hostages to be released as part of a ceasefire deal struck last month.
Palestinian prisoners were taken in buses to Gaza and the West Bank, many of them coming from the nearby Ofer prison.
The tone of the exchange sat in stark contrast to Thursday's chaotic handover, during which surging crowds pressed in on hostages, eliciting concern for their safety and prompting Israel to delay that day's release of Palestinian prisoners.
Saturday's release was more orderly, but retained the presentational elements that sought to project that Hamas remains the governing force in Gaza.
Lines of armed fighters kept crowds at bay, while the men who were released were flanked by more armed and masked fighters. A banner behind them bore the images of killed Hamas leaders.
Officials from the Red Cross signed certificates of release for Mr Kalderon and Mr Bibas, who were then made to hold them as they waved to the crowd in Khan Younis.
As Mr Siegel, a US-Israeli dual national, appeared on stage in Gaza City, a crowd gathered in Hostages Square in Tel Aviv erupted into cheers, some chanting: "He's a hero, he's a hero." One woman described feeling "pure happiness".

Dozens of Palestinians released from Israeli jails show signs of torture and starvation.
“Every time prisoners are released, we find the prisoners’ bodies reflecting the level of crimes committed against them, including torture that is unprecedented in its level after October 7, starvation crimes, systematic medical crimes, and the infection of a number of them with scabies, in addition to the severe beatings that the prisoners were subjected to before their release.
One of the released Palestinians said, “For the past 15 months, we were exposed to the most brutal torture … the Israelis treated us in inhumane ways. They treated animals better than us.”
The Qassam Brigades, did not fail to provide the necessary healthcare to Israeli captives despite the conditions in Gaza, including Israel’s relentless bombing and attacks that killed more than 47,000 people in the besieged enclave since October 2023.
“The good physical and psychological condition of the enemy’s prisoners proves the values of our resistance and its moral commitment towards the prisoners, while the criminal occupation commits the most heinous violations against our prisoners in jails,”

Deaths from Israel’s attacks on Gaza close to 62,000 as missing added
Local authorities add 14,000 people, missing and presumed dead, to the list.
Authorities in Gaza have updated the death toll from Israel’s war on the enclave to 61,709, having added thousands who are missing and now presumed dead.
The head of the Gaza Government Information Office told a news conference that the bodies of 76 percent of the Palestinians killed in the conflict have been recovered and brought to medical centres. However, at least 14,222 people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble or in areas inaccessible to rescuers.
‘Homes have become graveyards’
The updated numbers come amid the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that last month halted, at least temporarily, 15 months of genocide in the enclave, which followed the assault by Hamas on southern Israel in October 2023 that saw the armed group kill about 1,200 and take 250 people back to Gaza as captives.

'I don't know how he survived', says freed Israeli hostage's niece
While held hostage by Hamas for 15 months in Gaza, 80-year-old Gadi Moses ate mainly a piece of bread and an olive twice a day, his niece Efrat Machikawa says.
"I have no idea how he survived," she tells the BBC. "He lost so much weight."
He was given a small bowl of water to wash himself every five days and had to ask to use the toilet, she said. He moved frequently and was mostly alone, with Ms Machikawa saying "loneliness is another form of torture".
He calculated maths problems in his head to distract himself, and walked up to 11 km (six miles) a day in a room, measuring the distance, she added.
"Even in the darkest times, he knew how to somehow lift himself," she said. "The hope of reuniting with the family and worrying about us was the greatest power, was the only nutrition that he had for his soul."
Gadi was one of 18 hostages released so far this year as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, in exchange for 583 Palestinian prisoners.

Trump's Gaza plan won't happen, but it will have consequences
The plan, as expressed by Donald Trump, is not going to happen. It requires the co-operation of Arab states that have rejected it.
They include Jordan and Egypt, countries that Trump wants to take in Gaza's Palestinians - and Saudi Arabia, which might be expected to foot the bill.
Western allies of the US and Israel are also against the idea.
Some - perhaps many - Palestinians in Gaza might be tempted to get out if they had the chance.
But even if a million left, close to 1.5m others would still be there.
Presumably the United States - the new owners of Trump's "Riviera of the Middle East," would have to use force to remove them.
After America's catastrophic intervention in Iraq in 2003, that would be deeply unpopular in the US.
It would be the final end of any lingering hope that a two-state solution was possible. That is the aspiration that a conflict more than a century old could be ended with the establishment of an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
The Netanyahu government is adamantly against the idea, and over years of failed peace talks, "two states for two peoples" became an empty slogan.
But it has been a central plank of US foreign policy since the early 1990s.
The Trump plan would also violate international law.
America's already threadbare assertions that it believes in a rules-based international order would dissolve. Russia's territorial ambitions in Ukraine and China's in Taiwan would be turbocharged.

Netanyahu vows to destroy Hamas and return all Gaza hostages
On Saturday, Hamas returned 3 hostages to Israel in an exhausted state. After the release, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would destroy the group and return all hostages held in Gaza, The Times of Israel reports.
"We have once again seen what the Hamas monsters are. They are the same monsters who slaughtered our citizens and abused our captives," Netanyahu said.
The prime minister said the government will do everything possible to return all remaining hostages, adding that he has instructed the Israeli negotiating team to demand their safety.
"But beyond that, President Trump agreed with me totally: we will do everything to return all the hostages, but Hamas won’t be there. We will eliminate Hamas, and return all our captives," the Israeli Prime Minister added.
On Tuesday, February 4, Benjamin Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. The Israeli prime minister became the first foreign leader to meet with the newly elected US president after he officially took office.
Axios recently wrote that during a visit to Washington, DC, Netanyahu presented a plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza war that includes many conditions. First of all, he demanded that the group relinquish power in Gaza and that its leaders leave the region. According to the Israeli prime minister, there is no other way.

‘Insane’: Rights advocates denounce Trump’s call for US to ‘own’ Gaza
Donald Trump’s call for the United States to “take over” and “own” Gaza after its Palestinian population is entirely displaced has stunned rights advocates and politicians, prompting condemnations and forceful rejections of the proposal.
“Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people, not the United States, and President Trump’s call to displace Palestinians from their land either temporarily or permanently is an absolute non-starter,” CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement.
“If the Palestinian people were ever somehow forcibly expelled from Gaza, this crime against humanity would complete the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians on their own land, spark widespread conflict, put the final nail in the coffin of international law, and permanently scar our nation’s international image.”

Israel orders extra troops around Gaza as ceasefire shows signs of faltering
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to beef up troops in and around the Gaza Strip after Hamas threatened to call off a scheduled hostage release on Saturday, an Israeli official said.
Mr Netanyahu also ordered officials “to prepare for every scenario if Hamas doesn’t release our hostages this Saturday”, according to the official.
The Israeli official was not clear if Mr Netanyahu’s order referred to all hostages, or the three scheduled for release on Saturday.
Israel had signalled on Monday it planned to reinforce defences along the Gaza border. The all-scenario plan was announced during a four-hour meeting between Mr Netanyahu and his Security Cabinet that focused on Hamas’s threat, which risks jeopardising the three-week-old ceasefire.
So far, Hamas has released 21 hostages in a series of exchanges for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
But it said on Monday — and reiterated on Tuesday — that it planned to delay the next release of three more hostages after accusing Israel of failing to meet the terms of the ceasefire, including by not allowing enough tents and other aid into Gaza.
US President Donald Trump has said Israel should cancel the entire ceasefire if all of the roughly 70 hostages are not freed by Saturday.
Hamas brushed off his threat on Tuesday, doubling down on its claim that Israel has violated the ceasefire and warned that it would only continue releasing hostages if all parties adhered to the ceasefire.
Mr Trump is hosting Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House on Tuesday as he escalates pressure on the Arab nation to take in refugees from Gaza — perhaps permanently — as part of his audacious plan to remake the Middle East.
Palestinians and the international community have seethed over Mr Trump’s recent comments that any Palestinians potentially expelled from Gaza would not have a right to return.
During the first six-week phase of the ceasefire, Hamas committed to freeing 33 hostages captured in its attack on Israel on October 7 2023, while Israel said it would release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The sides have carried out five swaps since January 19.
The war could resume in early March if no agreement is reached on the more complicated second phase of the ceasefire, which calls for the return of all remaining hostages and an indefinite extension of the truce.

Gaza hospital chief Abu Safia detained, tortured in Israeli jail !
The director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital has been subjected to various forms of intense torture and inhumane treatment in an Israeli military prison.
He was “arrested by force, handcuffed and forced to take off his clothes after being taken from the hospital to one of the army camps”. Abu Safia suffers from “an enlarged heart muscle and from high blood pressure” and was beaten up and refused treatment for the heart condition. He was held in solitary confinement for 25 days and interrogated nonstop by the Israeli army, Israeli intelligence and police.
“Despite denying all the charges against him, he was beaten with an electric stick by the Israeli army so as to extract a confession from him.
A lack of medical care combined with the appalling conditions in “very cold prison cells” had “severely affected” the doctor’s health.
‘Thousands disappeared’
Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Amman in Jordan, said the doctor was one of hundreds of medical workers taken from Gaza by Israeli forces to the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp and other Israeli military prisons.
“At least his family now knows where he is and that he is alive, unlike potentially thousands of others who the UN said have been forcibly disappeared from Gaza,” she said.
According to the report, the prisoner had been beaten by Israeli soldiers while going from north to the south of Gaza, forced to take off his clothes and left for hours in the cold without food or water. Later, tied up and beaten, with both his hands suffering a fracture.

Starved, threatened and abused: Parents of freed Hamas hostages give details of ordeal
Parents of four young female Israeli hostages freed from Hamas captivity in Gaza have told the BBC about how their daughters were abused, including being starved, intimidated and threatened by armed men, and forced to cook and clean.
They recounted how the hostages were held in underground tunnels and buildings, witnessed physical abuse and were made to participate in Hamas propaganda videos, including, in one case, by faking her own death.
They said the women found strength through sharing stories, drawing and keeping a diary.
None of the women have given interviews to the media since their release, and their parents say the full details of what they endured are still emerging. There are also things they can't speak about due to fears it could put the hostages still in Gaza at risk.
Three of the four women whose parents spoke to the BBC were female soldiers kidnapped by Hamas from the Nahal Oz army base near Gaza on 7 October 2023.
The hostages' access to food and their treatment by male guards varied over the 15 months they were held, their parents said. They were moved between locations, rarely seeing sunlight.
"It was very different between the places that she went - it could be a good tunnel, it could be a very bad tunnel. It could be a good house or a bad house," said the father of Agam Berger, 20, a soldier who had been at Nahal Oz.
Some of the places had good food, some had "very bad food... they just tried to survive," Shlomi Berger said.
"They [and their captors] had to run away from one place to another because they are in a war zone there. It was very dangerous to be there," said Orly Gilboa, whose daughter Daniella was also kidnapped from the base.
When Daniella watched the release of three male hostages last week - who came out thin and emaciated - she told her mother: "If I had been released two months ago I would have probably looked like them."
"She got thinner, she lost a lot of her weight through the captivity. But in the last two months they were given a lot of food to gain weight," Ms Gilboa says.
Other parents have also reported significant weight loss. Meirav Leshem Gonen's daughter was taken by Hamas from the Nova music festival.
Romi, 24, was released in the first week of the ceasefire in January - she had lost "20% of her body weight", says her mother.
Ms Gilboa says the hardest thing she endured was seeing a video that suggested her daughter had been killed. Her captors poured powder on her so she looked like she was covered in plaster, as if she was killed in an Israeli military strike.
"I think everyone who saw it believed it, but I just kept telling myself that it can't be," she told the BBC.

Yemen’s Houthis emerge from Gaza war emboldened, and with more enemies
Once a largely local threat, Houthis now challenge Israeli and Western interests, leading to increased focus.
A lot has changed in the past 16 months as the Houthis demonstrated their capabilities – firing projectiles deep into Israel and causing damage – as well as their willingness to challenge the West and attack shipping in the seas around Yemen, all ostensibly in support of the Palestinians in Gaza.
For those actions, among many in the region and beyond, the Houthis have become a symbol of resistance against Israel and the West and the true representative of the Yemeni state.
“The Houthi leadership has not feared the United States or any other Western force,” said Abdullah Yahia, a high school graduate from Sanaa. “Offering support to Gaza is the real gauge of courage and humanity. This is why I have changed my view on the Houthis.”
Many shipping companies now avoid the Red Sea – a vital international shipping route – because of Houthi attacks that US-led reprisals were unable to stop. The attacks on shipping – which, according to a tally by the nonprofit Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), have numbered more than 200 since the start of the war – have increased shipping costs and led to cargo traffic through Egypt’s Suez Canal plummeting.

Rebuilding Gaza: What it would take to win this uphill battle
Israel’s bombing transformed Gaza into a rubble-strewn disaster zone, complicating efforts to rebuild.
The Israeli military has killed more than 61,700 people and wounded another 110,000, mostly WOMEN and CHILDREN. Many bodies are still buried under up to 50 million tonnes of rubble.

Israel has requested to keep its troops in five posts in southern Lebanon until Feb. 28, a Lebanese official and foreign diplomat told Reuters on Wednesday.

Gaza militant groups name three hostages to be released on Saturday
CAIRO/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinian militant groups in Gaza said they would release hostages Iair Horn, U.S.-Israeli Sagui Dekel-Chen and Russian-Israeli Alexandre Sasha Troufanov on Saturday, in accordance with the terms of the ceasefire with Israel.
All three men were seized in Kibbutz Nir Oz, one of the communities around the Gaza Strip that was overrun by Hamas gunmen on October 7, 2023. Iair Horn's brother Eitan was taken at the same time and remains in captivity.
Hamas said Israel was expected to release 369 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange.
The announcement of the names by Hamas, the main militant group in Gaza, came after days of uncertainty about whether the 42-day ceasefire agreed last month would hold and followed intense efforts by Egyptian and Qatari mediators to keep the U.S.-backed deal alive.

Despite ceasefire, Israel still destroying homes in Gaza :D
Israeli forces have also kept thousands of Rafah residents from their homes, Israeli military vehicles shooting at dozens of people trying to go home, injuring and killing them.
As part of the ceasefire, which began on January 19, Israel agreed to reduce its forces in the area before completely withdrawing its troops by the 50th day of the agreement.
However, analysis carried out on satellite images taken between January 19 and February 1 shows the Israeli army has continued construction in the area, demolishing and bulldozing 64 buildings within the city of Rafah, specifically in the as-Salam, Idari, and Tel Zaarab neighbourhoods.
"This is a war crime because they are destroying residential houses,” Attar said, referring to the fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the destruction of private property.
In addition to military breaches of the ceasefire, Israel has not allowed in sufficient amounts of essential humanitarian aid, such as food, fuel, tents, and emergency shelters.

Trump gloats over Hamas hostage back down — and repeats deadline threat
President Donald Trump repeated threats to Hamas Saturday as he crowed that the terror group has had an apparent change of heart.
Trump's comment came as three hostages were released under a ceasefire agreement with Israel that Hamas had threatened to derail earlier this week, claiming it was not being honored.
Trump met the news by pointing out, "This differs from their statement last week that they would not release any Hostages."
American-Israeli Sagui Dekel-Chen, Russian-Israeli Alexandre Troufanov and Argentinian-Israeli Iair Horn were released, the sixth exchange under the truce.
But Trump said Israel needed to decided if a noon deadline to release all remaining hostages still stood — andthreatened the U.S. would back any decision made.
"Hamas has just released three Hostages from GAZA, including an American Citizen," he wrote on Truth Social.
"They seem to be in good shape! This differs from their statement last week that they would not release any Hostages. Israel will now have to decide what they will do about the 12:00 O’CLOCK, TODAY, DEADLINE imposed on the release of ALL HOSTAGES. The United States will back the decision they make!"
Earlier this week, Trump said, “As far as I’m concerned, if all of the hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 o’clock – I think it’s an appropriate time – I would say, cancel it and all bets are off and let hell break out."

Four released Palestinians in critical condition, hospitalised in Ramallah
Released Palestinians report severe malnutrition and physical abuse in Israeli prisons.
While the Israeli captives have generally appeared in good condition throughout the ceasefire exchange since last month, many Palestinians appeared to have lost an enormous amount of weight while in custody and some were seen struggling to walk due to their poor physical condition and physical torture.
Some have described the horrors they faced while in Israeli jails, where most of them were imprisoned without any charges.
“The Israelis told us ‘Welcome to hell’. It really was hell,” Rajab recalled. “From the first day, we were beaten up badly. The beatings were brutal, tough and unbearable.”
“Palestinians released from Israeli captivity are in very bad shape. They speak of malnutrition, of going hungry for the past 15 months, of being deprived of even hygiene products, only being allowed to shower every 10 days,”
“Starvation happened every day, and we only had a low-quality meal once a day. I was 95kg [209 pounds] when I went to prison. Now I weigh 45kg [100 pounds].”

Why does Israel not take all the Palestinian refugees?
I understand the Arab countries not wanting to take the Palestinians. This is just moving the problem. You will have a new crisis in other countries.
Palestinians have the right to stay in Gaza.
For me personally the two state solution is the only option that will really fix things.
And remove all extremists in that area. (Hamas, Far right Zionists) Those extremists are guilty for this entire war.
I hope one day, Palestinians and Israeli people can live in peace as good friends. Some of them actually get along. Its just the damn politics that ruin everything...

Why does Israel not take all the Palestinian refugees?
That is essentially a question as old as time itself. The Arab / Palestinian issue is basically a Family Feud. This is from the Bible. The Arabs and Israeli's are half Brothers. Their descendants are consigned to fight over what they perceive as Holy lands and those promised to Abraham's descendants ( the Israeli's ) by God. These Issues will always be a point of contention between Israel and the Arab / Palestinian people and Countries. The Palestinians deserve to live in peace as well. However, a lot of their population have been taken over by extremist elements, like Hamas and have just sowed unrest and hatred.

I went to College with some kids that were Israeli and from Arab Countries and they got along just fine. Maybe environment plays a factor too.

Egypt developing Gaza reconstruction plan to counter Trump’s ‘take over’ :yeah:
The Egyptian government is developing a plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing the Palestinian enclave’s population, as it attempts to provide a viable alternative to United States President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to “take over” the territory and displace its population.
The newspaper added that Egypt expects to finalise the plan “by next week”, while its first phase should begin “after the emergency Arab summit in Cairo”, currently scheduled for February 27.
Before that, Saudi Arabia will host officials from Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan on Thursday, as part of a five-way Arab meeting in the capital Riyadh to discuss Cairo’s proposed reconstruction.
Trump has pressured both Egypt and Jordan to take in Gaza’s residents as part of the plan, in a proposal robustly rejected by both countries and decried as “ethnic cleansing” by rights groups.
Mobile houses and shelters will be erected in the safe zones, while humanitarian aid will be allowed to stream in. The reconstruction effort will also provide tens of thousands of jobs to Gaza’s population, according to the anonymous Egyptian officials.

Hamas says it will return bodies of four hostages including Bibas family
Hamas says it will hand over the bodies of four hostages on Thursday, including the two youngest people held by the Palestinian armed group.
The group's negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said the bodies to be released would include those of the Bibas family - Shiri and her young children Kfir and Ariel, who were aged nine months and four years when Hamas kidnapped them during the 7 October 2023 attack.
Hamas alleges that the three were killed in Israeli bombardment. Israel has not confirmed this.
The children's father Yarden was released by Hamas earlier this month.
Al-Hayya said Hamas would also release six living hostages on Saturday – double the number originally planned.
In exchange, Israel will free all women and those under the age of 19 arrested since last October and is allowing some rubble-clearing equipment into Gaza through the border with Egypt.
In a statement, al-Hayya said the group agreed "handing over four bodies of the occupation prisoners on Thursday 20 February, including the bodies of the Bibas family."
Hamas claimed in November 2023 they had been killed in an Israeli air strike, without providing evidence. The Israeli military has not confirmed the report. Israeli officials have said only that they are gravely concerned for their lives.
An Israeli official told Reuters that deceased hostages would undergo identification in Israel before being named.
In a statement, the Bibas family said it was aware of the Hamas statement.
"In the past few hours, we have been in turmoil following Hamas spokesperson's announcement about the planned return of our Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir this Thursday as part of the hostages' remains release phase," the statement said.
"We want to make it clear that while we are aware of these reports, we have not yet received any official confirmation regarding this matter.
"Until we receive definitive confirmation, our journey is not over.
Hamas has also named two of the six Israelis to be released on Saturday.
They are Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who were seized in 2014 and 2015 respectively after they crossed into Gaza on their own. The Israeli government has said both suffered from mental health issues at the time.
Under the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas agreed to release 33 hostages. In exchange, Israel agreed to release about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
Talks on progressing to the second phase of the deal - under which the remaining living hostages would be released and the war would end permanently - were due to start earlier this month but have not yet begun.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the talks would begin "this week".
He said Israel would "not accept the continued presence of Hamas or any other terrorist organisation in Gaza" but that Israel could prolong the ceasefire if discussions were productive.
"If we will see there is a constructive dialogue with a possible horizon of getting to an agreement (then) we will make this time-frame work longer," Saar said.
A total of 73 hostages are currently being held in Gaza - a mixture of Israeli soldiers and civilians both dead and alive. This also includes Thai and Nepalese nationals.
Some 251 hostages were taken by Hamas when it attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people.
Israel responded with a 15-month military offensive that killed 47,460 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, and devastated the coastal enclave.

Hamas offers to release all captives for end to Israel’s war on Gaza
Hamas says it seeks a lasting ceasefire and a full Israeli pullout, rejecting conditions for its removal from Gaza.
“We are ready for a second phase in which the prisoners will be exchanged in one go, within the criterion of reaching an agreement that leads to a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal from the Strip,” Qassem said.
The group also rejected Israel’s call for its disarmament and removal from the Strip.
“The occupation’s condition of removing Hamas from the Gaza Strip is a ridiculous psychological war, and the withdrawal or disarmament of the resistance from Gaza is unacceptable,” Qassem added.
“The problem for Israel is that despite having the upper hand, it’s not able to defeat Hamas”. Israel has violated the agreement multiple times, with its leaders discussing the possibility of an imminent return to all-out fighting in Gaza and the far-right ministers in Netanyahu’s cabinet even pushing for a military occupation of the enclave.

Hamas proposes exchanging all Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners in “one go” during the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal and reach a permanent truce and a full Israeli pullout.
Despite the ceasefire, at least three Palestinians have been killed and 11 injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry says.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has confirmed 48,297 Palestinian deaths in Israel’s war on Gaza, while 111,733 people have been wounded. The Government Media Office updated its death toll to at least 61,709 people, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead.
At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and more than 200 taken captive.

Israeli family mourns 'man of peace' as body returned from Gaza
From her house in East London, British-Israeli Sharone Lifschitz never gave up hope that her 84-year-old father Oded would return from the horror of Hamas captivity, after more than 500 days.
He was a man of peace, a campaigner for, and a friend of, Palestinians.
He was dragged from his home by Palestinian gunmen on October 7th and killed in captivity after being taken to Gaza alive.
The return of his body on Thursday was devastating news for Ms Lifschitz and her family, particularly her mother Yocheved who was also a hostage but returned alive and now will not be able to reunite with her husband of 63 years.
After identifying Oded's body, the head of Israel's National Institute of Forensic Medicine said he was killed in captivity more than a year ago. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said he "was murdered in captivity by the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization."
The BBC were with Sharone, a filmmaker and academic, at her home when the ceasefire was announced last month.
She shed tears of joy and hope as at last she saw an opportunity where she would discover what had happened to her father. After more than a year of him being held hostage, she didn't know if he was alive or dead.
Sharone Lifschitz admitted then that at his age the hopes for his survival were slim, but she also believed "miracles can happen."
Ms Lifschitz has been an eloquent and dignified voice for the release of her father and the other hostages, and shed light on the trauma the hostage families have faced since their ordeal began.
"One way or another, we will know. We will know if he's still with us, if we can look after him. We will know who we are grieving for… My father didn't deserve this.
But she recognised there were "more graves to come."
And now, one will be for her father.
Oded Li********z was a journalist and veteran campaigner for peace who drove sick Palestinians to hospitals in Israel for treatment. In his campaign for Palestinian rights he met Yasser Arafat, then head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).
He helped to found Kibbutz Nir Oz, where he lived and was taken hostage from. It was a place where he was well-known for the cacti that he grew, the piano he played and the grandchildren he adored.
His wife Yocheved, who was freed as a hostage by Hamas in 2023, met then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar while held in the tunnels under Gaza - and told him he should be ashamed of himself.
The British lawyers supporting the family said "Yocheved must be the only person to have met Sinwar, Netanyahu and the Pope, and given them all a piece of her mind. That is the kind of extraordinary person she is."
On Wednesday, as she received a peace award for her campaigning for the hostages, she said: "Oded was a great fighter for peace. He had very good relations with Palestinians and the thing that hurts the most is they betrayed him."
His family said they could now mourn for a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, but after "503 agonising days of uncertainty", they had "hoped and prayed for a different outcome."

Arabs do not like Palestinian Arabs, not since Black Friday and the attempt to overthrow Jordan at the latest. But also: why should they help to pull out this long, poisoned thorn in Israel's flank that causes the Israelis so much discomfort? They may make treaties with each other - but they do not love each other, and they have been bound by mutual hatred for thousands of years. Which is why I am convinced that all these treaties will sooner or later be nothing more than a waste of paper.
But that's just me being “defeatist” again. :O:

I can see Israel sending troops in to finish the job once and for all.
Body returned from Gaza is not Shiri Bibas, Israeli military says
Israel has accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire deal after forensic testing revealed the body returned from Gaza on Thursday was not that of Shiri Bibas.
The three other bodies handed over have been identified as her sons, Ariel and Kfir, who would have been aged five and two, and peace activist Oded Lifschitz, 84, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.
But the fourth body was not Shiri nor another hostage, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleging that Hamas "put the body of a Gazan woman in a coffin".
A Hamas spokesman, Ismail al-Thwabta, said on X on Friday that Shiri's remains seem to have been mixed up with other bodies under the rubble of a structure after an Israeli air strike.
The group told Reuters news agency they would investigate what had led to the wrong remains being sent to Israel.
They also reiterated their previous statement which said the children and their mother were killed in an Israeli bombing.
However, Israel on Thursday said the boys "were brutally murdered by terrorists in captivity in November 2023", according to intelligence and forensics.
Israel demanded that Hamas return Shiri along with the other remaining hostages.
"Whether she is alive or not, they need to bring back Shiri Bibas," IDF international spokesperson Lt Col Nadav Shoshani told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.
Netanyahu said "we will act with determination to bring Shiri home along with all our hostages - both living and dead - and ensure that Hamas pays the full price for this cruel and evil violation of the agreement".
The IDF posted on X that "during the identification process, it was determined that the additional body received is not that of Shiri Bibas, and no match was found for any other hostage. This is an anonymous, unidentified body."
"This is a violation of utmost severity by the Hamas terrorist organisation, which is obligated under the agreement to return four deceased hostages. We demand that Hamas return Shiri home along with all our hostages."
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said it was "horrified and devastated by the news that their mother, Shiri, was not returned—despite the agreement and our desperate hopes".
Shiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas were aged 32, four and nine months when they were kidnapped during the Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023. They have become a symbol for many in Israel and news of their deaths was met with an outpouring of grief.
The children's father Yarden Bibas, 34, was released by Hamas on 1 February.
Israel has confirmed that the fourth body returned on Thursday was that of veteran peace activist, Oded Lifschitz.

Israeli army kills two Palestinian children in occupied West Bank
Two Palestinian children were shot in the back and killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.
Ayman Nasser al-Haymouny, 12, was killed in Hebron while 13-year-old Rimas al-Amouri was shot in the Jenin governorate.
Both Ayman and Rimas were targeted suddenly and without warning in the back with lethal force by Israeli soldiers safely positioned inside armoured vehicles. Israeli forces have nothing but contempt for Palestinian children’s lives and systemic impunity means they will face no consequences.
Israeli plans to intensify military operations in Tulkarem and surrounding refugee camps in the occupied West Bank are evidence of GENOCIDAL INTENT.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) stressed that these Israeli attacks constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, urging international action.
OCHA also counted 34 incidents of Israeli settler violence towards Palestinians in its latest report.

Family of Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas says new returned body is hers
The family of Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas says a body handed over by Hamas on Friday is hers.
"Our Shiri was murdered in captivity and has now returned home," the family said in a statement. Israel's forensic officials who have been examining the body are yet to confirm the identification.
Remains handed over by Hamas on Thursday which it said were those of Shiri Bibas turned out to be an unidentified woman, Israel said.
It comes as six living hostages are handed over by Hamas on Saturday as part of a ceasefire deal. More than 600 Palestinian prisoners will be freed by Israel in exchange.
The Bibas family said: "For 16 months, we sought certainty, and now that we have it, there is no comfort in it, but we hope for the beginning of a closure."
Hamas previously said the mother and her two children were killed in an Israeli air strike.
Earlier, a senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the handover of the new body from Hamas to the Red Cross had taken place on Friday evening.
Israel had accused Hamas of breaking the terms of the ceasefire deal after forensic testing showed the remains handed over on Thursday were not that of Shiri Bibas.
The bodies of her sons, Ariel and Kfir, were returned to Israel, as was that of another hostage, Oded Lifschitz.
Hamas spokesman Ismail al-Thawabta said in a post on X on Friday that Shiri's remains seemed to have been mixed up with other bodies under rubble after the air strike.
Israel has disputed the claim that Ariel and Kfir Bibas were killed in an airstrike, with Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari telling a press conference "forensic findings", which have not been seen by the BBC, suggested the boys had been killed "deliberately".
He said evidence had been shared with "partners around the world so they can verify it".
Shiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas were aged 32, four and nine months respectively when they were kidnapped during the Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023.
They were taken hostage along with the children's father, Yarden Bibas, 34, who was released alive by Hamas on 1 February.

Sinn Fein leaders to boycott White House visit over US Gaza plan
“We are all heartbroken as we witness the suffering of the Palestinian people and the recent comments of the US president around the mass expulsion of the Palestinian people from Gaza, is something I cannot ignore,” Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill has said at a news conference in Dublin on Friday.
“The decision not to travel to the White House has not been taken lightly, but it is taken conscious of the responsibility each of us as individuals have to call out injustice.”
Sinn Fein party leader Mary Lou McDonald also addressed the news conference, saying she could not visit Washington “while there was a threat of mass expulsion hanging over the Palestinian people”.
Political leaders from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland usually travel to the US for the annual celebration of Ireland’s national day on March 17.
Ireland has been a vocal critic of Israel’s conduct during the conflict in Gaza and one of the staunchest defenders of the Palestinian cause within the European Union.

Questions remain over Hamas's handling of Shiri Bibas, who was "brought home" last night after a body returned on Thursday turned out not to be hers, the BBC's Sebastian Usher writes
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the country will "never forget and never forgive" the "brutal murder" of Shiri Bibas and her children. Hamas says they were killed by Israeli bombing.

Israel indefinitely delays Palestinian prisoner release as hostages freed
Israel says it is indefinitely delaying the release of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, in another potentially major setback in the ceasefire process.
Benjamin Netanyahu said the release was now going to be delayed until the next handover of hostages by Hamas was guaranteed - and without what the Israeli prime minister called the degrading ceremonies Hamas has put on each week.
Only one more handover - of the bodies of four hostages who died in captivity - is due to take place in the first phase of the ceasefire deal, which is due to end on 1 March.
No arrangements for the release of other living hostages, due to take place in the second phase, have yet been made.
Delegations from Israel and Hamas were due to negotiate the exact terms of the second phase while the first was ongoing - but have yet to meet.
Mediators will be working overtime to get the deal back on track and avert a possible collapse, after both Israel and Hamas accused one another of breaking the terms of the agreement.
Netanyahu accused Hamas of "repeated violations", including the "cynical use of the hostages for propaganda purposes".
In response, Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq strongly condemned the decision to postpone the release of the prisoners in a statement on Sunday morning.
He said that Israel's claim that the handover ceremonies were humiliating was a "false claim and a flimsy argument" aimed at evading its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.
Netanyahu's statement came after four hostages taken captive on 7 October - Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Eliya Cohen and Omer Wenkert - were released on Saturday.
The two other released hostages, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, were held in Gaza for years - Mr Mengistu since 2014 and Mr al-Sayed since 2015.
In exchange, Israel was supposed to release 602 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas accused Israel of violating the agreement by delaying the release.
The six Israeli hostages are the final living hostages to be returned as part of the first phase of a ceasefire agreement.
Meanwhile, outside the Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, family and friends waited for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
