The World Health Organization (WHO) says Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City "is not functioning as a hospital anymore"

The WHO says "constant gunfire and bombings in the area have exacerbated the already critical circumstances"

Doctors there say they fear the remaining 36 newborn babies needing intensive care treatment may die.

There have been reports of fierce fighting nearby as Israeli forces continue their ground operation against Hamas.

Israel says Hamas has a command centre under Al-Shifa - which Hamas denies - but insists it is not hitting the hospital during fighting.

Meanwhile, the US has carried out air strikes on two Iranian bases in Syria, following attacks against its military personnel in Syria and Iraq.

Over five years ago, in 2018, Gunnar Heinsohn wrote this:

Hamas knows that no army in the Middle East would treat it as gently as the Israeli army. On any other border, the organization would suffer not two, but five-digit casualties. It would be like Syria, Iraq or Yemen with their permanent wars. The only unusual thing about the Middle East is the Israelis' refusal to deal with the terrorist group in the same way as they want to deal with Jews. Hamas wants to wipe them out, but cannot yet do it properly. However, it can continue to work on this project because Israel refrains from doing what it could do, namely turning the Gaza Strip into an Aleppo or a - recently paradisiacal - Ghouta.

Israel - as paradoxical as it sounds - is enabling eco-terror with burning kites in its own fields through its restraint. Hamas sends cautious women to the front with the reassurance that the Israelis do not shoot at women. Children are lured into the firing line with the same promise of harmless heroism. Some are hit after all, because bombers hiding behind them have to be eliminated. Hamas then shouts "child murderer" to the world, and the Islamist capitals from Ankara to Tehran enthusiastically join in, although this time even their Russian ally criticizes Gaza's "extremist" tactics. Only when Egypt demands an end to the actions does Hamas buckle. Its leaders know that Cairo won't be long in dealing with them.

At best, the horror gives Israel the chance to learn how to deal with ever larger hostile masses. In 1950, only a quarter of a million people lived in Gaza. Today there are two, but by 2030 there will be over 2.5 million. They can only become angrier and more belligerent. At the same time, their capacity to absorb losses is constantly increasing. In their own way, they are children of the West. Through UNRWA, it guarantees that the fourth child of the third wife will also be fully financed. Because America is no longer involved, Western European countries have brought forward or even increased their contributions. Berlin is transferring just under 80 million in 2017. Added to this is the share of the EU gift of more than €140 million. In relative terms, Switzerland is giving much more at €27 million. This has also enabled Gaza to increase its population by a factor of 8 since 1950, while neighboring Egypt has only just managed to increase its population by a factor of 4.
Although nobody explicitly wants it, it is also indirectly about a war between countries and tacit observers of the Holocaust against the descendants of its survivors. It is far from over.

US President Biden says Al-Shifa hospital "must be protected" as fighting rages close to the facility in Gaza City.

His comments came as UK PM Rishi Sunak urged Israel to do everything possible to protect civilians in Gaza and called for an urgent humanitarian pause.

Israel has accused Hamas of running a command centre under Al-Shifa - which the hospital and Hamas deny.

The hospital, Gaza's biggest, is "nearly a cemetery", the World Health Organization has warned, with bodies piling up inside and outside.

Dozens of premature babies and 45 kidney patients needing dialysis can't be treated properly due to a lack of power, says the UN

The Israeli military says it's in the process of "coordinating the transfer of incubators from a hospital in Israel to Gaza"

[Die Zeit] The US says it has evidence that the Islamist Hamas is using the Al-Shaifa hospital in the Gaza Strip for military purposes. "We have information that confirms that Hamas is using this hospital as a command and control center and probably also as a weapons cache," US national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on board Air Force One. "This is a war crime."
The US government thus supports the account of the Israeli armed forces, which had reported, among other things, a Hamas command center under the currently embattled Shifa hospital. When asked for concrete evidence, Kirby merely said that the information was based on various intelligence sources. He did not want to go into further detail.

Kirby went on to say that the USA would not approve of air strikes on hospitals. The actions of the Hamans did not diminish Israel's responsibility to protect the civilian population. "Hospitals and patients must be protected," said the government spokesman. The US government also does not want to see firefights in clinics where innocent, helpless and sick people are simply seeking medical care.

-----------------------------

And the following is remarkable because traditionally the European leftist intellectuals are extremely anti-semitic - and Habermas is far left.

[TS] Four intellectuals around Jürgen Habermas have commented on the Middle East war in an open letter. Israel's war is justified, the accusation of genocide is absurd. - One of the most influential intellectuals of recent times has spoken out in the debate on anti-Semitism in Germany and the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.
In a joint statement, philosopher Jürgen Habermas and his co-authors call the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip a "principally justified counterattack" to the massacre by Hamas and Islamic Jihad on October 7.

The statement was published on the website of the "Normative Order" research center at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. In addition to the 94-year-old Habermas, the signatories also include the lawyer Klaus Günther and the political scientists Nicole Deitelhoff and Rainer Forst.
According to the authors, the Hamas massacre and Israel's reaction have led to a "cascade of moral and political statements and demonstrations". In this situation, therefore, "some principles should be adhered to".

"Principles of proportionality, avoiding civilian casualties and waging a war with the prospect of future peace" should guide the Israeli response to the massacre.
However, "despite all the concern for the fate of the Palestinian population", it is a slippage of standards "if genocidal intentions are attributed to Israel's actions".

Furthermore, Israel's actions "in no way justify anti-Semitic reactions, especially not in Germany", according to the authors. In view of the "mass crimes of the Nazi era, Jewish life and Israel's right to exist are central elements that are particularly worthy of protection" for the "self-image of the Federal Republic of Germany".

In addition, the "elementary rights to freedom", physical integrity and protection from racist defamation apply. These are "indivisible and apply equally to all".

The letter was published on the research center's website on Monday.

Read somewhere, if weapons and other war material and/or troops was kept stored in protected buildings like hospitals. They are no longer under Geneva protection and are therefore legitimate targets

Now when this is said I hope Israel does not bomb this hospital.

If it cannot be taken on the gorudn with calculatable risk, then give the staff enough early warning time to move out their patients, and then bomb it. Its war, damn it. Dont save the enemy below the hospital just because there are civilians around. Why do you think Hamas has moved its infrasturcture beneath hospitals, eh? They hoped to become untouchable that way. Or gain propaganda poitns if Israel strikes.

Saving the enemy is what makes you lose wars. Don't. Never.

In fact Israel has told staff at that hospital already days ago to evacuate. Staff said "No". Their deicison, they were warned. Israel also gives phone calls and knock-on dud bombs as warnign to civilians in buildings that are about to be bombed. Lets face it, no matter what Israel does or does not - the world will always be against it, since they are Jewish.

Hamas can call itself lucky that it is up against Israel and not an army like that of Syria, Saudi Arabia, or Iran. These do not know such self-restrictions as the Israeli do practice. Not to mention Russia, China.

My rule for such a scenario: give early warning to civilians, and then target and bomb the hell out of any enemies around.

Note that they say Hamas has abused many such civilian places like hospitals and schools. Israel should not do them the favour to carelessly massacre civlians when bombign these, but allow civilians - sufficient but short - time to escape. But for everything that counts in war, it should not restrain from attacking these military targets. You dont win wars by saving the enemy.

BTW, I personally would also strike at "religous" places if these get used for military purposes of any kind. In Irag for exmaple, they often stored weapons in mosques and had snipers and obeservations posts in minarettes. Sorry dudes, that makes you all valid targets, holy ground or not.

If rules apply even in war as some say, then I insist at least on these rules being followed by the other as well - Reciprocity. So far the Hague Landwarfare convention has not been signed by Hamas, Taliban, or IS.

Ironically, the Hague Convention was initiated by the Russian Tsar. Now look what Russia does these days.

Geneva conventions covered civilians in wartime
and

Establishing military posts of any kind inside hospitals, like Hamas does with severla hopsitals ion Gaza, is a war crime, that is for certain.

And Israel seesm to think it can solve the problem without flattening the whole building, and sent trained forces into the hospital that have been deliberately trained to act inside that environemnt (language skills were especially required). If they can acchieve the task this way, I am all for it.

Israeli forces have entered Gaza's largest hospital in what the military says is a "targeted" operation.

A journalist inside the hospital tells the BBC that soldiers are going room to room and questioning people but there is currently no shooting taking place.

The same witness said commando soldiers had entered the main emergency department, with tanks also in the hospital area.

Israel accuses Hamas of running a command centre in tunnels under the hospital and the US says it has intelligence that supports this.

Hamas denies this and says the raid on the hospital is a war crime - hundreds of civilians have been sheltering there, alongside patients.

The White House says civilians and patients must be protected, adding: "We don't want to see a firefight in a hospital"

A skewed concept of justice is now in vogue in the West. In the Western canon, this refers to the individual, and everyone is equal before the law, whether rich or poor, brown or white. In the left-wing narrative, however, the collective prevails, defined by pigmentation, origin, identity and, above all, victim status. Morality is selective. Some groups are more “equal”: blacks, Muslims, LGBTQ+. . ., but not the victims of yesterday such as Jews or, in America, the descendants of the Chinese who were kept like slaves during the construction of the railway. Justice is assigned, not weighed; It's not about good or bad behavior, but about favored minorities.

Haniyeh lives in Qatar - Israel says the house was being used as a Hamas meeting place.

Elsewhere, Palestinian media say around 50 people were killed by an air strike in the central Gaza Strip.

Israel hasn't commented on the strike, but says it targets Hamas infrastructure and minimises civilian deaths.

On Wednesday night, Israel continued its operation at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, which it says was being used as Hamas base.

Israel says its troops have found the body of a second woman held hostage by Hamas, during a search close to Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.

Noa Marciano, a 19-year-old soldier, was one of about 240 people kidnapped by Hamas gunmen during the 7 October atrocities, which killed 1,200 people.

Israeli forces raided Al-Shifa hospital earlier in the week, believing it to contain a Hamas command centre - something Hamas denies.

Meanwhile, the UN says a lack of fuel means that it can no longer bring aid into Gaza from Friday.

People there are facing the "immediate possibility of starvation" with winter fast approaching, the UN World Food Programme says.

Mobile phone and internet services are down because of the lack of fuel, Palestinian telecoms companies say.

Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted Israeli forces have not been "successful" in minimising civilian casualties in Gaza - but blamed Hamas.

More than 11,500 people have been killed in the territory since Israel began its retaliatory strikes, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

All ICU patients in al-Shifa dead amid Israeli siege. Hospital director Muhammed Abu Salmiya told the news channel that the hospital had become a ‘prison’ and a ‘mass grave’. All patients in the intensive care unit of Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital have died, its director told Al Jazeera Friday, on the third day of Israel’s siege of the enclave’s largest medical facility.

The hospital’s director, Muhammed Abu Salmiya, said there were 7,000 people in the hospital — patients, medical staff and those taking shelter — and that doctors were still working to help patients. Salmiya said the hospital had become a “big prison” and a “mass grave” for all those inside.

“We are left with nothing, no power, no food, no water. with every passing minute, we are losing a life. Overnight we lost 22 persons, [and] for the past three days the hospital has been kept under siege,” Salmiya was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera.

America’s ABC News had reported Wednesday that 43 of the 63 patients in the ICU had died as oxygen ran out due to Israel’s siege. Dr Ahmed Mokhallalati, head of the hospital’s plastic surgery department, told the American news channel that they were burying bodies inside the hospital premises.

The Hamas-run health ministry says 120 patients remain at the hospital, along with premature babies - the BBC can't confirm the figures.

Mark Regev, an advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, earlier told US media that Palestinians should leave the southern city of Khan Younis for their safety.

Israel and Hamas reach tentative U.S.-brokered deal to pause conflict, free dozens of hostagesA five-day pause in fighting, monitored by aerial surveillance, could see dozens of women and children freed from captivity in Gaza, according to people familiar with the terms of the agreement Israel, the United States and Hamas have agreed to a tentative deal that would free dozens of women and children held hostage in Gaza, in exchange for a five-day pause in fighting.
The release, which could begin within the next several days — barring last-minute hitches — could lead to the first sustained pause in conflict in Gaza, according to people familiar with its provisions.

Under the terms of a detailed, six-page agreement, all parties to the conflict would freeze combat operations for at least five days while an initial 50 or more hostages are released in smaller batches every 24 hours. It was not immediately clear how many of the 239 people believed to be in captivity in Gaza would be released under the deal. Overhead surveillance would monitor movement on the ground to police the pause.
The stop in fighting is also intended to allow a significant increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance, including fuel, to enter the besieged enclave from Egypt.
The outline of a deal was put together during weeks of talks in Doha, Qatar among Israel, the United States and Hamas, indirectly represented by Qatari mediators, according to Arab and other diplomats. But it remained unclear until now that Israel would agree to temporarily pause its offensive in Gaza, provided the conditions were right.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in Washington said late Saturday that “we are not going to comment” on any aspect of the hostage situation.
Concern about the captives — two of whom Israel said were found dead — along with the rising number of Palestinian civilian casualties have steadily increased pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. More than 100 countries — but, notably, not the United States — have called for a full and immediate cease-fire.
The decision to accept the deal is difficult for Israel, said one person familiar with the situation who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations. While there is strong domestic pressure on Netanyahu to bring the hostages home, there are also loud voices in Israel demanding that the government not barter for their release.
In public remarks, Israel has remained unyielding, while acknowledging the pressure it is under. On Friday, Israeli National Security Council head Tzachi Hanegbi told reporters that the war cabinet had unanimously agreed that a limited cease-fire could occur only after “a massive release of our hostages … and it will be limited and short, because after that we will continue to work towards achieving our war goals.”
In fiery comments Saturday, Netanyahu said the offensive would continue, even as he defended a decision last week to allow the first steady fuel transfers into Gaza since the start of the war. As Israel has pursued its Gaza offensive, it has cut off all but minimal deliveries of the food, water, fuel and medicine that the enclave’s 2.3 million people depend upon for survival. “For international support to continue, humanitarian aid is essential,” he said. “Because of that, we accepted the recommendation to bring fuel into Gaza.”
Netanyahu spoke as thousands of hostage families and their supporters ended a five-day march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to demand government action, with many saying that the lives of innocent Israelis were worth any short-term deal the government has to make to secure their release.

After initial hesitation, the Biden administration, under its own domestic pressure between advocates of unstinting support for Israel’s war aims and concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, has fully backed a temporary pause in the fighting. Beginning with President Biden’s trip to Tel Aviv a week after the war began, and followed by multiple visits from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior officials, the administration has pushed hard with Netanyahu to understand that it is losing the narrative high ground as more Palestinians die. The death toll in Gaza is now reportedly more than 11,000.
The administration’s highest priority, however, has been freeing the nine Americans and one permanent U.S. resident among the hostages. “I think we need a pause,” Biden said two weeks ago at a campaign event. “A pause means time to get the prisoners out.”
A week later, asked about reports he had pushed for a three-day stop in the fighting, Biden said he had asked Netanyahu for “an even longer pause.” In his news conference Thursday after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he said the hostages were “on our mind every single day,” and that he was working on a way to “have a period of time where there’s a pause long enough” to let them be released.
U.S. officials have said they believe a pause would allow Hamas to gather the hostages and arrangements could be made to escort them safely through the battlefield. It was not clear that the Americans or other foreigners would be included in the initial tranche of releases. The hope is that if the release of women and children is successful, other groups of captives will then follow.
Brett McGurk, the White House National Security Council’s top Middle East official, is on an extended trip to the region to try to solidify the hostage release plan, including meetings in Israel and Qatar. Speaking at an international security conference Saturday in Bahrain, McGurk said that negotiations have been “intensive and ongoing.”
The freeing several weeks ago of an American mother and daughter — among the four captives that have been released since the war began — during a briefly agreed pause to allow international humanitarian workers to escort them, provided a “track” for “what we hope will be a much larger release.”

McGurk told the conference that Hamas’s release of a “large number” of the hostages, believed to total 239, “would result in a significant pause in fighting and a massive surge of humanitarian relief. Hundreds and hundreds of trucks on a sustained basis entering Gaza from Egypt.” When the hostages are released, he said, “you will see a significant, significant change.”
It was “reasonable,” McGurk said, “to pause the fighting, release the hostages, the women, the children, the toddlers, the babies, all of them.” The initial deal does not include civilian men or Israeli military personnel, a number of whom are women, among the captives.
Those remarks drew an angry response from Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who interpreted them as signaling that a pause allowing humanitarian relief would come only after the hostages were released unconditionally by Hamas. “There’s a lot of negotiations,” Safadi said, “but Israel is taking 2.3 million Palestinians hostage … and denying them food and water and by this war.”
An administration official said any assumption that the United States was conditioning aid on the release of hostages had “grossly misinterpreted” McGurk’s remarks. “Any type of hostage deal would likely result in an increase of humanitarian aid,” the official said. The United States, the official noted, has continuously pushed for an increase of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/11/18/us-israel-hamas-reach-tentative-deal-pause-conflict-free-dozens-hostages

A group of 28 premature babies, evacuated from a besieged hospital in Gaza on Sunday, have crossed into Egypt.

It's thought they are travelling to an Egyptian airport, before being assessed and moved onto hospitals.

The babies were patients at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, now occupied by Israeli forces after heavy fighting.

Earlier, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said an Israeli air strike on a different hospital killed at least 12 people.

Israel has not commented, but says it's attacking "terrorists" and "terrorist infrastructure" in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Qatar - which is trying to broker a deal - says only "very minor" obstacles remain to Israeli hostages being released.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, which helped facilitate previous deals, has been meeting Hamas leaders in Qatar - raising further hopes.

They seem to have agreed a "temporary" seize fire and exchnaging 50 female and kid hostages for 150 female and juvenile prisoners.

I think that after these day Israel will find it immensely - immensely - difficult to reopen combat actions again. I expect that instead the world will mount tremendous pressure on Israel to just extend the seize-fire, and trading more hostages, and not to reopen the combat.

Hamas will get plenty of fuel, food, medical aid. They will try to reorganize and regroup. They will rechannel it, they will steal it.

You cannot just switch on and off military offensive movements like this. Thats just not how it works. When the machinery was brought to a halt, it needs much time again to swing back into forward movement at a later time.

Israel and Hamas have agreed a deal to release 50 hostages being held in Gaza during a four-day pause in fighting.

The start of the pause will be announced in the next 24 hours - if successful it will be the first break in fighting since 7 October.

On Wednesday morning, Israel confirmed its ground and air operation in Gaza is continuing, before the pause starts.

Hamas says 150 Palestinian women and teenagers will be released from Israeli jails under the deal.

Up to another 150 Palestinians could be released - as well as another 50 hostages from Gaza - after the initial four-day pause.

Israel's government insists that this isn't the end of the war, reiterating its commitment to "complete the elimination of Hamas"

The four-day pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas will begin at 10am on Thursday, Hamas says.

Israel has not yet commented on when the pause will begin, but Foreign.

Minister Eli Cohen said he expected the first hostages to be received on Thursday.

Under the agreement, 50 Israeli hostages taken by Hamas will be released and 150 Palestinian women and teenagers held in Israeli jails freed.

Families of those held in Gaza have said every captive "needs to come home" and that each hour is "critical"

Israel says its offensive in Gaza continues, after a four-day pause in fighting was delayed.

The pause was expected to start on Thursday - an Israeli government source says they believe the deal will go ahead on Friday.

Qatar - which helped broker the deal - says the start time will be announced "within the next few hours"

In the first phase of the pause, Hamas will release 50 hostages from Gaza, and Israel will free 150 Palestinian detainees.

On Thursday morning, Israel said its aerial strikes hit 300 Hamas targets in the past day, including tunnels and weapons sites.

Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has arrived in Israel - visiting Kibbutz Be'eri, the sight of a Hamas massacre on 7 October.

Shadowy Hamas leader in Gaza is at top of Israel's hit list after last month's deadly attack

The mastermind of the Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the worst Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed in generations is a secretive figure, feared on both sides of the battle lines.

In Gaza, no figure looms larger in determining the future trajectory of the war than Yehya Sinwar. Obsessive, disciplined and dictatorial, he is Hamas’ top leader inside the Palestinian territory, a rarely seen veteran militant who learned fluent Hebrew during years in Israeli prisons and carefully studied his enemy.

Israeli officials have vowed to kill him and crush the militant group that has ruled Gaza since 2007. But seven weeks into the war, the 61-year-old Sinwar remains alive, in hiding and at the helm of Hamas’ fighters as they battle Israeli forces. He also controls the group’s negotiations over the fate of nearly 240 hostages that militants captured during the Oct. 7 attack.
With the devastating toll from Israel’s bombardment and ground invasion, Sinwar’s political fate may now depend on how the war ends and whether Palestinians feel they gained anything from their immense losses.

Under the deal - which has been mediated by Qatar - 13 Israeli hostages are due to be released later today, with 50 being released over the four days.

As part of the agreement, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners.

Small arms and mortar fire, as well as an air strike, were heard by a BBC reporter close to Gaza moments before the pause was due to come into effect.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron is meeting Palestinian leaders today, and says Britain is looking into all avenues to get support into Gaza.

Israeli authorities say 14 hostages held by Hamas will be released on Saturday.

As part of the Qatar-brokered deal, Israel will release 42 Palestinian prisoners.

It's the second day of a four-day pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Friday saw the release of 24 hostages - they included 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and one Filipino national 39 Palestinian prisoners were released as part of the deal.

The biggest humanitarian convoy since the start of the war entered Gaza on Friday, carrying fuel, food and medical supplies.

Hamas has announced it is delaying the release of further Israeli hostages.

A statement by its military wing says Israel has broken the terms of the truce deal - a claim that Israel has denied.

A Hamas official told the BBC that Israel had stopped 97 aid trucks from reaching northern Gaza, and also flew drones over southern Gaza.

A group of up to 14 hostages had been expected to be released on Saturday.

More Israeli hostages are expected to be released on Sunday but timings are unknown.

26 Israeli hostages - all women and children - have been freed as part of a deal between Israel and Hamas.

78 Palestinian prisoners have also been released from Israeli jails over two days.

Meanwhile, 14 Thai hostages and one Filipino have been freed as part of a separate deal between Hamas and the Egyptian government.

Today is the third day of a four-day pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's PM has said the original agreement could be extended - but Israeli operations in Gaza would resume with full force after the truce period.

Meanwhile, more Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners are due to be released on Monday, on the final day of the current truce period.

On Sunday, 14 Israeli hostages and three foreign nationals were released by Hamas in exchange for 39 Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas has committed to releasing another 20 women and children over the next two days. US national security spokesman John Kirby says.

Families have been informed by the Israeli government that a further release of hostages will take place later on Monday.

As part of the Israel-Hamas deal, 39 Israeli hostages in Gaza have been released so far with 117 Palestinians freed from Israeli jails.

Further lorry-loads of humanitarian supplies entered the Gaza Strip on Monday with food, fuel and medicines being distributed by aid organisations.

Three Palestinians will be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for each Israeli hostage returned from Gaza.

But Hamas says it is not holding all of the captives in the Gaza Strip, which could complicate efforts to free the most vulnerable.

A senior Hamas source in Qatar tells the BBC that some of the civilian hostages are held by smaller groups like Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The source says 10 hostages will be released on Tuesday and another 10 on Wednesday but these numbers have not been confirmed by Israel.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has used the pause in fighting to get desperately needed aid into Gaza, but says much more is needed.

There are hopes the truce between Israel and Hamas could be extended - talks are being held in Qatar about a possible new deal.

Israel says it's received a list of hostages held in Gaza who could be released later on Wednesday, on the sixth day of the current truce.

On Tuesday, 12 more hostages were released by Hamas and Israel freed 30 more Palestinian prisoners.

The son of Ada Sagi, who turned 75 while being held in Gaza, told the BBC he was "over the moon" at her release.

Palestinian prisoners have alleged mistreatment while in Israeli jails. A 14-year-old boy said he witnessed beatings; Israel has not commented.

Hamas crossed the border and killed 1,200 people in Israel on 7 October, with about 240 taken hostage.

Three people have been shot dead in Jerusalem after two attackers reportedly opened fire at a bus stop, at least six others have been injured - some of them critically.

It comes a day after two Palestinian boys, 8 and 14, were shot and killed during an Israeli army raid in the West Bank city of Jenin.

Separately, Israel has extended a temporary ceasefire in Gaza for a seventh day as international mediators try to negotiate the release of more hostages.

On Wednesday 12 Israeli and four Thai hostages held by Hamas arrived back in Israel.

In exchange, 30 Palestinian women and teenage boys were freed from Israeli jails.

The Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October killed 1,200 people with around 240 others taken hostage.

Fighting has resumed in Gaza after the seven-day temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas expired.

Both sides have blamed each other for the violence restarting after a week in which more than 100 hostages were released by Hamas in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says dozens of people have been killed since the Israeli bombardment resumed.

Heavy fighting is taking place across Gaza, with house-to-house fighting reported as Israeli forces intensify their ground operation.

Tanks are closing in on three areas - Khan Younis in the south and Jabalia and Shuja'iya in the north, where hundreds of thousands of civilians remain.

The UN says 600,000 people are under evacuation orders in southern Gaza but "there is nowhere to go" because shelters are so full.

A Palestinian journalist in Khan Younis told the BBC air strikes were happening every few minutes and "everything is shaking"

On Tuesday, Israel said its troops had reached "the heart of Khan Younis" - the largest southern city - on the "most intense" day of fighting in its ground operation.

Israel believes Hamas leaders could be hiding in the city - and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu insists the war can only be won with "crushing force"

Like practically all international organisations fon this kind, this one too is quite anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian.
The men - who knows that they all are innocent civilians? They were arrested because they are of an age that makes them eligible for combat, and were found in areas that should have been evacuated by civilians, and they got stripped to search them and be sure they do not carry explosives on their bodies. IDF says they will now be interrogated and tested to find out who is Hamas and who not.

Putting it on TV is a way to send a message around, a message according to the cultural standards of that region, a message of strength and subjugation: mess with us, and see where it gets you: naked and humilated on the streets. The beasts committing the massacre and committing the atrocities and acts of sexual violence systematically and the mutilations and mass rapings and sexual murders did the same, they sent a message: look, this we do to your women and there is nothing you can do against it.

Intimidating attempts.

Israeli troops continue their assault on southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, with the Israel-Hamas war now in its tenth week.

There are reports of house-to-house fighting in the city; most of the population has fled to coastal areas or further south to Rafah.

On Friday night, the US blocked a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

The UN chief said Gaza was at breaking point - but the US called the resolution "imbalanced" and unrealistic, though urged Israel to do more to protect civilians.

Also on Friday, Israel said two soldiers had been severely wounded in a failed attempt to rescue a hostage seized by Hamas.

Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom were released during a short-lived truce.

Hamas officials in Gaza say Israel has killed more than 17,177 people in its retaliatory campaign, including about 7,000 children.

US ‘accomplice to genocide’ in Gaza – Palestine
President Mahmoud Abbas made the remark in response to Washington vetoing a UN Security Council resolution calling for a truce in the enclave. This American policy makes the US an accomplice to the genocide, ethnic cleansing and war crimes committed by the Israeli occupational forces against Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.” The official denounced Washington’s stance as “immoral” and running contrary to “all humanitarian norms and principles.”

A witness has spoken of “terror and fear” in the heart of Gaza's southern city Khan Younis, amid constant shelling and fierce battles.

Israel has ordered residents to leave the city centre; an official said he didn't want civilians caught up in the "difficult fighting" there.

The Israeli military chief earlier told his soldiers to "press harder" in their fight against Hamas, saying there were signs Israel's enemy was disintegrating.

Footage has appeared to show people surrendering to Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza - but two versions of the same scene have raised questions over its authenticity.

Hamas attacked Israel nine weeks ago - killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom were released during a short-lived truce.

Hamas officials in Gaza say Israel has killed more than 17,700 people in its retaliatory campaign, including more than 7,000 children.

The UN boss and Qatar - which has been acting as a mediator - have today vowed to keep up efforts to pressurise both sides into a lasting ceasefire.

Hamas has threatened that not a single hostage will be allowed to leave Gaza alive unless its demands for a prisoner exchange are met.

But Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says dozens of Hamas militants have surrendered and he described the situation as “the beginning of the end” for the group.

Israel has ordered civilians to flee the centre of Khan Younis - with an official saying he doesn't want civilians caught up in the "difficult fighting" there.

Key mediator Qatar says the chances of a new ceasefire between Israel and Hamas are "narrowing", but has vowed to keep up the pressure on both sides.

Hamas attacked Israel nine weeks ago - killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom were released during a short-lived truce.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has said Israel has killed about 18,000 people in its retaliatory campaign.

Israel has continued its bombardment of Gaza, with the main focus on Khan Younis in the south. There's also been fighting in Rafah near the Egyptian border.

The US is "pressing" the Israeli government to "[put] a premium on civilian life", a state department spokesman says.

Nathaniel Tek says clearer instructions are needed to allow people to move away from the conflict - though he says Hamas too has a responsibility to protect civilians.

In Jenin in the occupied West Bank, at least four people have been killed - witnesses say they were hit by a drone strike.

Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthis have claimed responsibility for an attack on a Norwegian tanker off the coast of Yemen.

Hamas broke through Israel's heavily guarded perimeter on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages - some of whom were released during a brief truce.

Israel has launched air strikes and ground offensives in the territory. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says Israel has killed about 18,200 people.

An overnight storm has worsened the conditions for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have fled their homes.

Many are in makeshift shelters or sleeping rough.

Israel says it carried out 250 strikes in the past 24 hours. Hamas officials say 50 people have been killed in the latest wave of air strikes.

And Israel’s army say 10 soldiers were killed in fighting in Gaza yesterday - the deadliest day for the military since its ground offensive began.

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted a non-binding resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has issued his sharpest criticism yet of Israel, saying the country is starting to lose global support over its "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza.

Hamas broke through Israel's heavily guarded perimeter on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages - some of whom were released during a brief truce.

Israel's ambassador to the UK rejects a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

"Absolutely no," says Tzipi Hotovely, adding: "The Palestinians never wanted to have a state next to Israel"

The comments double-down on messaging from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hotovely also rules out a ceasefire in Gaza: "It just basically means we would like to welcome another attack of 7 October"

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says early morning Israeli air strikes kill at least 19 people.

In Israel, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is expected to hold talks with Israeli ministers on Thursday.

They are able to wipe out Hamas in Gaza I think, but now Hamas is finding growing support in West Jordan as well where before it was not too big due to its threat for Fatah leader Abbas and thus being actively suppressed, also the civil population did not care much for the events in Gaza in recent years and preferred to live in its protected bubble of - in comparison to Gaza - moderate wealth and less terror.

And I wonder whether Israel would and/or could engage Hamas in West Jordan, too. After another 7-10 : yes, surely they would, but without such a trigger event? Also, its a bigger place than Gaza, though maybe less tunnels? I dont know, probably less tunnels indeed.

The UN Palestinian refugee agency says hungry people are helping themselves to food, making it almost impossible to distribute aid.

I have no problem with bringing Israel to account befor the ICC for the killing of the Al Jezeera newsman...so long has Hamas also surrenders all the rapist murderers who committed crimes against civilians. There can be no 'double standard' before the ICC. Frankly I'd the position the IDF at all known or suspected tunnel exits in Gaza, flood the tunnels completely with seawater and kill everything that comes out. If that means a few more hostage-friendly fire victims, so be it. Israel had actually facilitated the Qatar-cashflow to Gaza; that is a major no no. Hamas health officials say at least 110 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

There's been no specific comment from Israel, which insists it is targeting what it calls terrorist infrastructure.

Jabalia, part of which is a long-standing refugee camp, is in the north of Gaza - an area where, since the early days of the war, Israel has warned people to leave.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin is meeting Israeli officials today, as the UK, France and Germany step up global calls for a ceasefire.

At the UN Security Council, the US is said to be seeking to tone down the words of a new draft resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities.

Without specifically commenting on the reported incident, the Israeli army says it targeted and killed a "Hamas financier" in Rafah.

The UN Security Council is due to vote later on a new ceasefire motion - reports say the language has been watered down to a "suspension" of hostilities to get US backing.

Meanwhile, the US says 10 countries have agreed to form a coalition to protect merchant shipping in the Red Sea after attacks by Houthi rebels.

The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have been targeting ships they believe are bound for Israel.

The US says "serious negotiations" are taking place on a new Gaza truce and the release of more Israeli hostages.

But prospects remain uncertain after Hamas's leader reportedly rejected the idea of a temporary pause during talks in Cairo on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces say they’ve uncovered a network of tunnels in the heart of Gaza City with entrances connected to the houses of Hamas leaders.

On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed there since Israel launched its military campaign against the group.

And the UN Security Council again postponed a meeting to discuss calls for "urgent humanitarian pauses" in Gaza.

A draft resolution by the United Arab Emirates also called for the return of hostages and a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.

Israel began its campaign in Gaza after Hamas broke through the heavily-guarded perimeter with Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom have been freed.

The original draft called for a sustainable cessation of hostilities, but the final version calls for creating the conditions for one.

It comes as the World Food Programme says Gaza is at risk of famine within six months if the conflict doesn't end.

Meanwhile, Hamas says Palestinian groups have rejected the prospect of further hostage releases until Israel agrees to end the war in Gaza.

More than 240 Israeli hostages were captured during Hamas's 7 October attacks, with more than 100 of them released in a truce last month.

On Wednesday, the Hamas-run Gaza government said 20,000 people had been killed in the enclave since the war erupted.

Israel began its offensive after Hamas fighters crossed the border, killing 1,200 people.

Israeli strikes on Gaza continue as UN calls for more aid

Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip continued late into the night on Friday, with reports of sustained air strikes and ground attacks.

A strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza killed at least 18 people, according to Palestinian media.

People in another camp, Bureij, were ordered by Israel's army to move south as it continued its ground offensive.

In New York, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution urging more humanitarian aid for Gaza.

However the motion fell short of calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war.

Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, said at least 18 people died and dozens were injured in an air strike on a house in Nuseirat, in central Gaza.

An air strike also destroyed a water treatment plant in Jabalia, northern Gaza, it added.

Residents of Bureij, which is close to Nuseirat, were ordered to "leave immediately for their own security" and move south towards the city of Deir al-Balah.

"Where should we go to?" Ziad, a medic and father of six, told Reuters news agency by phone. "There is no safe place."

Another displaced person, wheelchair user Walaa al-Medini, said she had been injured in a strike on her home in Gaza City.

"This is not a life: no water, no food, nothing," she told AFP news agency.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said air strikes had been conducted near its Al-Amal Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis.

Doctors Without Borders said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that Israel's "indiscriminate strikes" on Gaza had "turned the north of the Strip into a pile of rubble".

It added that in Al-Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, "the dead and wounded continue to arrive almost every day".

The UN's World Food Programme says that about a quarter of all households in Gaza - roughly 500,000 people - are facing "catastrophic hunger conditions", with food and water running out.

Israel vows to continue 'difficult' military operation in Gaza

The Israeli military has vowed to continue its operation in Gaza, but admitted it is "protracted" and "difficult".

A spokesman said over the weekend it was expanding its "ground operations in the southern and northern Gaza Strip".

Meanwhile, the US said Joe Biden spoke to the Israeli PM and emphasised the "critical need" to protect civilians.

In response, Benjamin Netanyahu said the war would go on until all Israeli goals were achieved.

President Biden also told reporters that he had not asked Mr Netanyahu for a ceasefire.

On Friday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution demanding large-scale aid deliveries to Gaza - but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire between the two warring sides.

Talks held in Egypt earlier this week designed to secure a fresh truce between Israel and Hamas have so far failed to deliver results.

A Palestinian official familiar with the ceasefire negotiations has told the BBC that Egypt presented a new three-stage plan that begins with a two-week humanitarian truce which could be extended, during which Hamas releases 40 hostages and Israel releases 120 Palestinian prisoners.

This stage would be followed by the formation of an independent body to deal with humanitarian relief and reconstruction, as well as a comprehensive ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners.

The Egyptian proposal ignores Israel's intention to weed out Hamas' political and military structures for Gaza once and forever. Hamas still launches rockets and missiles at Israel EVERY DAY.

If I were Israel, I would play the game even tougher. I would refuse Hamas negotiations, instead offer a deal to the world: For every lets say 15 trucks of aid, one hostage is to be freed. No hostage free - no aid goes in. I would starts with a low number like for example ten, and then allow getting "negotiated" upwards" to for example 20 trucks per hostage, if there even would be negotiations. The point is: this way the blame for no aid going into Gaza is reflected back onto Hamas if they do not agree. There is also a chance, althoigh irrationality is the rule in that region, that the people would start to turn against Hamas. It would take the wind out of many internationall voices' sails.

It should also be refused by the West to spend money on reconstruction and for aid into Gaza, or the West Joran area. After all, the plac i s not Europe, but the orient, the Middle East. The Arab nations are stinking rich, and although they dispise Palestinians and see them like Westerners see gypsies, they nevertheless opportunistically use them to set up a morally blackmailing game to set up pressure against the West and Israel. Let the Arabs pay for thei dear brothers and sisters. And if they don't, than we hold the mirror up to them.

Oh wait, there is the political left and the academic antisemitic elites endlessly preventing this. Heck, guess we are screwed... So, more Westeren self-mortification. We are weak spineless dwarves - und das kotzt mich nur noch an.

Hamas says 70 killed in Israeli air strike on camp

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says an Israeli air strike killed at least 70 people in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the strip.

A spokesman said the death toll was likely to rise given the large number of families living in the area.

The Israeli military told the BBC it was looking into reports of the strike.

It comes as Israeli and Arab media say Egypt, which borders the Gaza Strip, has put forward a new proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Dozens of injured people were rushed from Maghazi to nearby Al-Aqsa Hospital with footage showing some children's faces covered in blood and body bags piled outside.

The health ministry says three houses were hit in the attack late on Sunday.

According to ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra, a densely populated residential block was destroyed.

A father said he had lost his daughter and grandchildren, adding that his family had fled from the north for safety in central Gaza.

"They lived on the third floor of one of the buildings," he said. "The wall collapsed on them. My grandchildren, my daughter, her husband - all gone.

"We are all targeted. Civilians are targeted. There is no safe place. They told us to leave Gaza City - now we came to central Gaza to die."

The Palestine Red Crescent Society says "intense" Israeli air strikes have led to the closure of main roads between Maghazi and two other refugee camps, Al-Bureij and Al-Nuseirat, "hindering the work of ambulances and rescue teams".

In a statement to the BBC, the Israeli military said it had received "reports of an incident in the Maghazi camp".

"Despite the challenges posed by Hamas terrorists operating within civilian areas in Gaza, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] is committed to international law including taking feasible steps to minimize harm to civilians," it added.

According to the health ministry, more than 20,000 people have been killed - mostly children and women - and 54,000 injured in Gaza since 7 October, when Hamas and other Palestinian groups attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.

The Israeli military said more than a dozen soldiers had been killed in Gaza since Friday, bringing the total for the ground offensive launched after 7 October to 156.

Saturday was one of its deadliest days but Mr Netanyahu said there was "no choice" but to keep fighting.

Netanyahu vows to intensify campaign

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will intensify its fight against Hamas in the coming days.

He told members of his party that he had visited Gaza on Monday morning and that Israel's military campaign there was "not close to being over".

His comments come days after the US secretary of state said Israel should lower the intensity of its strikes.

The war began on 7 October after Hamas led a deadly attack on communities inside Israel.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said on Monday that some 20,674 Palestinians had been killed in Israeli bombardments since then. It says most of the fatalities have been women and children.

Some 1,200 people, mainly civilians, were killed when Hamas gunmen stormed across the border on 7 October. About 240 people were taken back to Gaza as hostages. Israel says 132 are still being held.

Mr Netanyahu has vowed to destroy Hamas and return the hostages to Israel.

He told a meeting of his Likud party that troops he met on his visit to Gaza had urged Israel to keep fighting "until the end".

"We're not stopping. We're continuing to fight, and we're intensifying the fighting in the coming days. It's going to be a long war that's not close to ending."

Later on Monday, the prime minister was heckled by relatives of hostages demanding the immediate release of their loved ones during an address to parliament.

"We will not be able to release all the abductees without military pressure ... we will not stop fighting," he said, as families chanted "Now! Now!" from the gallery.

Israeli and Arab media say that Egypt has proposed a plan for a ceasefire between the two sides.

According to reports, the plan would see the phased release of all Israeli hostages and an undetermined number of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails over the course of a month and a half, ending with a suspension of Israel's offensive.

A previous temporary truce deal negotiated by Qatar saw dozens of hostages released from Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

So far, both Israel and Hamas have resisted growing calls for a ceasefire.

On Sunday the Gazan health ministry said an Israeli air strike killed at least 70 people in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the strip, with a densely populated residential block destroyed.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said "intense" Israeli air strikes led to the closure of main roads between Maghazi and two other refugee camps, Al-Bureij and Al-Nuseirat, "hindering the work of ambulances and rescue teams".

In a statement to the BBC on Sunday, the Israeli military said it had received "reports of an incident in the Maghazi camp".

"Despite the challenges posed by Hamas terrorists operating within civilian areas in Gaza, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] is committed to international law including taking feasible steps to minimize harm to civilians," it added.

Hamas reports 241 killed in Gaza inside 24 hours

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry has said at least 241 people were killed in the past 24 hours, as Israel's military operation continues in the territory.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called the war a "grave crime" against his people.

Israel's army chief Herzi Halevi said the conflict with Hamas would continue for "many more months".

Israel says it hit more than 100 sites on Tuesday, amid reports of impending ground operations in central Gaza.

Loud explosions could be heard from the Gaza Strip across the perimeter with Israel in the early hours of Wednesday.

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinian medical sources say six Palestinians were killed in an overnight Israeli drone strike in the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem.

Gaza's health ministry said 382 people had also been injured over the same 24 hours.

According to the ministry, at least 20,915 Palestinians have been killed - mostly children and women - in more than 11 weeks of fighting.

The claims by the warring sides have not been independently verified.

The war began on 7 October after Hamas led a wave of deadly attacks on communities inside Israel. Some 1,200 people, mainly civilians, were killed. About 240 people were taken back to Gaza as hostages, and a number of them were later released.

President Abbas has described the war in the Gaza Strip as "beyond a catastrophe" and "beyond a war of annihilation".

He called it unprecedented in the history of the Palestinian people. Speaking in Ramallah to an Egyptian TV channel in his first interview since the war began, he said the territory had become unrecognisable and warned that the occupied West Bank could implode at any time.

The Palestinian leader accused Washington of prolonging the war by vetoing UN draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire.

Lt Gen Halevi, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), told a news conference that the war would "continue for many more months" to ensure that Israel's "achievements are preserved for a long time".

"There are no shortcuts when it comes to thoroughly dismantling a terrorist organisation except being stubborn and determined in the fighting," he said. "There are no magic solutions."

Acknowledging that the terrain was complex, the general vowed to arrest or eliminate the Hamas leadership even if it took time, adding that the IDF was close to dismantling all the Hamas battalions in northern Gaza.

Israeli and Arab media say that Egypt has proposed a plan for a ceasefire.

According to reports, the plan would see the phased release of all Israeli hostages and an undetermined number of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, ending with a suspension of Israel's offensive.

A previous temporary truce deal negotiated by Qatar saw dozens of hostages released from Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. So far, both Israel and Hamas have resisted calls for a lasting ceasefire.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says 50 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on Thursday.

Fighting is continuing across the territory, with the Israeli military saying its troops are in Daraj and Tuffah neighbourhoods of Gaza City.

The Palestine Red Crescent says 10 people have been killed in a strike near al-Amal hospital in Khan Younis, which it runs.

An Israeli minister says the military will act to remove armed group Hezbollah from the border between Israel and Lebanon if attacks continue.

The UN has warned that the human-rights situation in the occupied West Bank is rapidly deteriorating and has called for Israel to "end unlawful killings" of Palestinians.

At least 1,200 people were killed when Hamas militants attacked Israel on 7 October and about 240 others were taken hostage.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says over 21,100 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel started its retaliatory campaign.

The leader of the powerful Lebanese militia, Hezbollah, is giving a speech after Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri was killed in blast in Beirut on Tuesday.

Hezbollah is classified as a terrorist organisation by much of the West and the Arab League, but is a powerful force in Lebanon.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon says it is deeply concerned about a potential escalation of violence.

A spokesperson for Unifil says a wider conflict would have devastating consequences for both Israel and Lebanon, and urges all parties to show restraint.

Israel has not confirmed whether it was behind Tuesday's explosion, but has described it as a "surgical strike" on Hamas.

In Gaza, the UN says five people were killed in an attack on the Palestinian Red Crescent building in Khan Younis on Tuesday, as Israel urges people to evacuate the city.

At least 1,200 people were killed when Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October and about 240 others were taken hostage.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 22,000 people have been killed in the territory since Israel started its retaliatory campaign.

Israeli minister outlines plans for Gaza after war

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has outlined proposals for the future governance of Gaza once the war between Israel and Hamas is over.

There would, he said, be limited Palestinian rule in the territory.

Hamas would no longer control Gaza and Israel would retain overall security control, he added.

Fighting in Gaza continued alongside the plan's publication, with dozens of people killed in the previous 24 hours, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due back in the region this week. He is expected to hold talks with Palestinian officials in the occupied West Bank and Israeli leaders.

His visit comes amid heightened tensions in the region following the assassination of top Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri on Tuesday in Lebanon's capital Beirut. His killing has widely been blamed on Israel. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.

Under Mr Gallant's now "four corner" plan, Israel would retain overall security control of Gaza.

A multi-national force would take charge of rebuilding the territory after the widespread destruction caused by Israeli bombing.

Neighbouring Egypt would also have an unspecified role to play under the plan.

But the document adds that Palestinians would be responsible for running the territory.

"Gaza residents are Palestinian, therefore Palestinian bodies will be in charge, with the condition that there will be no hostile actions or threats against the State of Israel," Mr Gallant said.

The plan was not discussed in any detail in the cabinet meeting and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly commented on it. The meeting is reported to have broken up amid acrimony with some ministers angrily objecting to names put forward for an investigation into the events surrounding the 7 October attack by Hamas.

Talk of the "day after" in Gaza has led to deep disagreement in Israel.

Some far right-wing members of Mr Netanyahu's government have said that Palestinian citizens should be encouraged to leave Gaza for exile, with the reestablishment of Jewish settlements in the territory - controversial proposals that have been rejected as "extremist" and "unworkable" by other countries in the region and by some of Israel's allies.

While Mr Gallant's proposals may be regarded as more practical than those suggested by some of his cabinet colleagues, they are likely to be rejected by Palestinian leaders who say that Gazans themselves must be allowed to take full control of running the territory once this devastating war is over.

Mr Netanyahu has not publicly talked in any detail about how he thinks Gaza should be governed.

He has suggested that the war in Gaza may yet last several months, with the avowed goal being to completely crush Hamas.

Mr Gallant's plan also outlined how the Israeli military aims to proceed in the next phase of the war in Gaza.

He said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would take a more targeted approach in the north of the Gaza Strip, where operations will include raids, demolishing tunnels and air and ground strikes.

In the south, the Israeli military would continue to try to track down Hamas leaders and rescue Israeli hostages, he said.

On Thursday, the IDF said it had hit areas in Gaza's north and south, including Gaza City and Khan Younis.

It said it had conducted strikes on "terrorist infrastructure" and had killed people who it described as militants, who it said had tried to detonate an explosive next to soldiers.

It also announced that it had killed a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative, Mamdouh Lolo, in an air strike.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 125 people had been killed in the past 24 hours across the Strip.

A health ministry official said 14 people - including nine children - were killed by Israeli air strikes in al-Mawasi, to the west of Khan Younis.

The small town has been designated a "safe space" by Israeli forces for displaced Palestinians. The IDF has not commented on the claims made by Hamas.

"We were sleeping at midnight when a strike hit the camp on the tents, 4x2 tents where people were sleeping, most of them children," eyewitness Jamal Hamad Salah told Reuters news agency. "We found one body there that flew 40 metres away."

"There is nowhere safe in Gaza," aid agency Save the Children's country director for the occupied Palestinian territory, Jason Lee, said. "Camps, shelters, schools, hospitals, homes and so-called 'safe zones' should not be battlegrounds."

The total number of people killed in Gaza since the start of Israel's retaliatory campaign had reached more than 22,400 by Thursday - comprising almost 1% of the enclave's 2.3 million population, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Israel's offensive started after Hamas gunmen launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking about 240 people hostage.

Hamas command in north Gaza destroyed, Israel says

The Israeli army says it has "completed the dismantling" of Hamas's command structure in the northern Gaza Strip.

Army spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters that Palestinian militants are now operating in the area only sporadically and "without commanders".

He said Israel had killed around 8,000 militants in north Gaza. The BBC cannot independently verify this number.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are now focused on dismantling Hamas in south and central Gaza, he said.

Israel has killed more than 22,000 people since the war began, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. On Sunday, the territory's health ministry said it had recorded more than 113 deaths over the past 24 hours.

Gaza has been devastated during Israel's war with Hamas, and most of the territory's population of 2.3 million has been displaced.

Israel's offensive started after Hamas gunmen launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking about 240 people hostage.

More than 100 remain following some releases in a six-day pause in fighting in November.

On Saturday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was focused on ensuring the Gaza conflict does not spread and turn into "an endless cycle of violence" after Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets at Israeli territory on Saturday, in what it called a preliminary response to the killing of a top Hamas official in Beirut earlier this week.

Mr Blinken was speaking in Greece at the start of a week-long trip to the region. He has since flown to Jordan, meeting King Abdullah on Sunday before heading to Qatar.

"Washington should put pressure on Israel to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Gaza," King Abdullah told Mr Blinken, warning him of the "catastrophic repercussions" of the continuation of Israel's military campaign in Gaza, a palace statement said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Saturday that Israel would continue its campaign to "eliminate Hamas, return our hostages and ensure that Gaza will no longer be a threat to Israel".

"We have to put everything aside... until the complete victory is achieved," Mr Netanyahu said in a statement.

In other developments, on Sunday the eldest son of Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh, Hamza al-Dahdouh, was killed along with another journalist, Mustafa Thuraya, in an Israeli strike in southern Gaza.

Six Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid in the city of Jenin in the occupied-West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said on Sunday. Palestinian media said the raid involved a large deployment of Israeli forces.

In addition to the raid, an Israeli air strike reportedly targeted a gathering in the West Bank, after an Israeli military vehicle struck an explosive device, killing one officer.

Jenin has been a scene of repeated Israeli operations over the past 18 months and they have intensified since the war in Gaza started on 7 October.

On the northern border of Israel, Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets at Israeli territory on Saturday following the killing of Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri in a suspected Israeli attack in the Lebanese capital.

A statement by the Iranian-backed Lebanese movement says it hit an air traffic control base in Meron with 62 rockets. The Israeli military said it had identified about 40 launches from Lebanon, and that it had responded.

With the top US diplomat Antony Blinken in Israel for talks, dozens of people are reported killed in Gaza.

The Hamas-run health ministry says 57 deaths were reported in one central Gaza hospital alone.

Deaths were also reported in the north of the Strip - Israel says it targeted Hamas sites across Gaza from air and sea in the past 24 hours.

In Khan Younis in the south, Israel says it "eliminated 40 terrorists", and found Hamas tunnels and weapons.

After meeting Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Blinken's team says he "emphasised the need to take all feasible precautions to minimise harm to civilians"

Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after a cross-border assault by Hamas more than three months ago, which saw 1,300 people killed in Israel.

Since 7 October, more than 23,000 people - mostly women and children - have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry there.

Look at all those long, deep, wide tunnels! And all that concrete build into them! All that European concrete, paid for with financial aid given by the EU, orders placed via Palestinian civilian proxies! Wasn't there some years ago such a big row over the blockade of Gaza and Israel not wanting any concrete going in anymore that this, beside other reasons, led to serious diplomatic rows between Europe and Israel, and almost a confrontation with Turkey...? :03:

Look at all that concrete down there. Where did all that concrete come from, I really wonder...

Lets better dont even start talking about Diesel fuel for generators, ventilators, air exchange machines, and where that Diesel was coming from... :hmmm:

Lesson of the story: the Israelis were right all the time with their scepticism and concerns. Which, not surprisingly, does not change that the EU already started to once again know things better than Israel...

Europe and America should stop supplying Gaza and the Westjordan Palestinian territory. Let the Arabs pay for it. If you watch at their big miracle architecture cities they built in such a short time along the Gulf region, then you know the costs are for them like throwing some peanuts away. Why the heck is the West paying the Palestinians all these years...???

UN court hears South Africa genocide case against Israel

The UN's International Court of Justice is hearing a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The submission also calls on the court to order Israel to stop military operations there.

The ICJ will deliver only an opinion on the genocide allegation as the case is not a criminal trial, although it is being closely watched.

Israel has vehemently rejected the accusation as "baseless".

There were angry scenes outside the ICJ's Peace Palace on Thursday as Dutch police struggled to keep groups of Palestinian and Israeli supporters apart.

Hundreds of people waving Palestinian flags gathered outside the ICJ, calling for a ceasefire. Israeli supporters set up a screen showing images of some of the hostages still being held in Gaza.

Pro-Palestinian protests also took place in Cape Town, South Africa.

South Africa will present its case on Thursday and Israel its defence on Friday.

In its submission, South Africa says Israel's actions "are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group".

It says Israel's actions include "killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction".

It calls for "provisional measures" to be implemented by the court as a matter of urgency, including that Israel cease all military activities in Gaza.

Israel has defended its actions in Gaza, saying it is responding to Hamas's deadly attacks on 7 October, but speaking in court on Thursday, South Africa's Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said no attack "can provide justification for or defend breaches of the [Genocide] Convention".

Israel is a signatory to the Genocide Convention of 1948, which defines genocide and commits states to prevent it.

The ICJ is the UN's top court, based in the Hague in the Netherlands. Its rulings are theoretically legally binding on parties to the ICJ - which include Israel and South Africa - but are not enforceable.

In 2022, the court ordered Russia to "immediately suspend military operations" in Ukraine, an order that was ignored.

Under international law, genocide is defined as committing one or more acts with the intention to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.

Red and white police tape has been placed outside the Peace Palace - as the ICJ building is called - in an attempt to bring some semblance of order to the chaotic scenes outside.

It is in contrast to the formality inside the court, where the Israeli delegation is listening to South Africa's lawyers accuse the country's forces of committing genocide in Gaza.

Israel denies this, and on Friday will have a chance to respond. Its delegation is expected to highlight its right to self-defence under international law - this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has no intention of permanently displacing the people of Gaza, or occupying the territory.

Unlike the International Criminal Court (ICC), the ICJ cannot prosecute individuals for crimes such as genocide, but its opinions carry weight with the UN and other international institutions.

On Wednesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said: "Our opposition to the ongoing slaughter of the people of Gaza has driven us as a country to approach the ICJ."

Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the accusations "atrocious and preposterous".

"We will be in the International Court of Justice and we will present proudly our case of using self-defence… under humanitarian law," he said.

He added that the Israeli army was "doing its utmost under extremely complicated circumstances on the ground to make sure that there will be no unintended consequences and no civilian casualties".

Caroline Glick, a former adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the case was "an affront to the basic concept of morality and reasonableness".

Zane Dangor, director general of South Africa's department of international relations and cooperation, told BBC's Africa Daily programme that the allegation of genocide against Israel is a "strong allegation" but that it "is not one that is unfounded". He described South Africa's case as "very meticulous".

While condemning the Hamas attacks of 7 October, he said nothing "could justify the level of killings" that is taking place in Gaza.

The ICJ could rule quickly on South Africa's request for Israel to suspend its military campaign - but a final ruling on whether Israel is committing genocide could take years.

South Africa has been highly critical of Israel's military operation in Gaza, and its governing African National Congress has a long history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

It sees parallels with its struggle against apartheid - a policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the white-minority government in South Africa against the country's black majority, until the first democratic elections, in 1994.

In Gaza, more than 23,350 people - mostly women and children - have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, since the war began in the aftermath of Hamas's 7 October attacks on southern Israel. In those attacks some 1,300 people were killed - mainly civilians - and about 240 others taken hostage.

It is astonishing how well developed Hamas' infrastructure is in the Gaza Strip and how many weapons the terrorists have stockpiled, says Kobi Michael. The Israeli military analyst works for the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and the Misgav Institute for Zionist Strategy. "Hamas has prepared for a long war."

At the request of the NZZ, the Israeli armed forces say that they have discovered over 30,000 weapons and 1,500 tunnel entrances and routes to date. According to the IDF, 700 rocket launchers have already been destroyed. The figures cannot be independently verified. Before the war, experts assumed that Hamas had over 15,000 rockets. Obviously, not all of them have been found yet: As recently as Monday, the Iron Dome missile defense shield in the south of Tel Aviv repelled projectiles.

According to military expert Michael, what is particularly surprising is the extent to which Hamas was able to produce weapons itself. "We found other places where they produced sniper rifles and rocket launchers." The quantity and quality of the weapons in Hamas' possession dwarf the arsenal of some regular armies in the Middle East, says the military analyst.

The recently discovered rocket factory in the central Gaza Strip was mostly underground, partly under civilian homes. Back in November, the IDF discovered a tunnel entrance in a mosque that led to a rocket workshop.

Underestimate your enemy, and be surprised.

Thousands call for release of hostages at pro-Israel rally in London

Thousands have attended a pro-Israel rally in London to mark 100 days since the 7 October attacks and call for the release of all hostages from Gaza.

People gathered in Trafalgar Square carrying Israeli flags and holding pictures of some of the 105 people still believed to be being held.

Appearing remotely, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that "this battle belongs to the whole free world".

It comes as Israel faces mounting pressure over civilian deaths in Gaza.

The London event coincides with a 24-hour rally being held in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

President Herzog told the crowd: "In the face of those who wish to scare us into silence, you've stood up and spoken out with clarity, pride, and passion."

He also thanked the King, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer for their expressions of support following the 7 October attacks.

Other speakers included Israel's ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, and Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy. A minute's silence was also held.

People in the crowd told the BBC they were worried the hostages were being forgotten and that they felt compelled to attend and show support for Israel.

One organiser told the audience he had "never been prouder to be Jewish", prompting cheers.

The event also heard from Conservative peer Lord Pickles, the UK's special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, and Labour MP Christian Wakeford, a supporter of Labour Friends of Israel.

Lord Pickles said that Gaza could be rebuilt and peace brought to the Middle East, but that such a process could only begin if "we bring the hostages home".

Former home secretary Suella Braverman was in the audience and said she was "here to stand in solidarity with Israel".

"It has been 100 days since innocent people have been taken hostage by the Hamas terrorists and we need to bring them home now," she told the PA news agency.

Security for the event was tight, with attendees having to wait in long queues and undergo bag searches before being allowed to enter the square.

The weeks following the 7 October attacks brought what the Metropolitan Police described as a "massive increase" in antisemitic incidents in London.

They saw Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups cross into Israel and carry out attacks on civilian and military targets, killing around 1,200 people and taking an estimated 240 hostages.

A six-day ceasefire at the end of November saw 105 hostages released. Israel believes around 105 are still alive in Gaza, while a number of others are either unaccounted for or known to have died.

Following the attacks, Israel launched a ground invasion and bombing campaign in Gaza with the stated aim of destroying Hamas and removing the group from power in the territory.

On Saturday, thousands attended a march on Westminster calling for an end to the operation and a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a case at the International Court of Justice, brought by South Africa, which accuses it of committing genocide.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry says that more than 23,000 people have so far been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its campaign.

Israel Gaza war: Deal reached on aid to Gaza, including the hostages

Israel and Hamas have reached a deal to allow more humanitarian aid into war-ravaged Gaza, Qatari mediators say.

They say that under a deal brokered by Qatar and France, medicines will be given to hostages held by Hamas.

In return Israel will allow more basic supplies into Gaza. Conditions in the territory are dire after more than three months of Israeli bombardment.

Meanwhile the US says it is hopeful that further talks could lead to the release of more hostages.

The US Middle East envoy has been in Qatar to discuss the possibility of such a deal, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said on Tuesday.

The discussions were "very serious and intensive", he added . "We are hopeful it will bear fruit and bear fruit soon."

Earlier, Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari announced the agreement on aid.

Under the deal, the humanitarian supplies will leave the Qatari capital, Doha, for Egypt on Wednesday. The aid will then be taken to Gaza, to be delivered to civilians, while medicines are to reach Israeli captives.

More than 132 hostages are thought to be still held in Gaza.

About 240 people were captured by Hamas in a series of raids in southern Israel on 7 October. Some 1,300 people, mainly civilians, were killed.

In a letter sent to Israel's war cabinet after a ceasefire ended last year, the Hostages Families HQ group said many abductees needed regular medical attention and some were in immediate danger.

Last week Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said David Barnea, head of Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, had approached Qatar to secure a deal for providing the medicines needed.

On Tuesday Mr Netanyahu issued a statement expressing "his appreciation to all those who have assisted in the endeavour".

Israel accused of targeting civilians in deadly attack

Israel is accused of having targeted a group of Palestinian civilians with no links to armed groups and who posed no threat to Israeli forces, according to witnesses in the occupied West Bank.

Seven men - four of them brothers - were killed in an Israeli air strike early on 7 January, as they sat around a fire next to the road through al-Shuhada village, 10km (six miles) from the city of Jenin.

The BBC has spoken to relatives of the men killed, witnesses in the area at the time, and a paramedic at the scene. All provided strong evidence that the men were not members of armed militant groups, and that no clashes with Israeli forces were taking place in the location at the time.

Khalid al-Ahmad, the first paramedic to arrive that morning, is convinced the men were doing nothing wrong.

"One of them was wearing slippers and pyjamas," he told the BBC. "Don't you think that someone who wants to resist [the Israeli occupation] would at least wear proper shoes?"

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has linked the strike to a military operation hours earlier in Jenin refugee camp, in which a female soldier was killed.

The IDF directed us to a statement it released at the time, which said that "during the operation, an aircraft struck a terrorist squad that hurled explosives at the forces operating in the area".

Footage from both the IDF and a nearby CCTV camera does not show any clear evidence of confrontations with Palestinians in al-Shuhada at the time of the strike.

The four brothers - Alaa, Hazza, Ahmad, and Rami Darweesh - were aged between 22 and 29 years old. They were Palestinian emigrants who had returned from Jordan a few years earlier with their mother and five siblings.

They had Israeli permits, allowing them to cross into Israel for agricultural work each day. These permits are often difficult to obtain and are rapidly withdrawn from anyone Israel sees as a security threat - or as linked to someone who is.

The three men killed with them were members of their extended family.

Intense Israeli strikes in south Gaza city as hostages sent medicine

Residents of Khan Younis in southern Gaza say they have faced one of the most intense nights of air strikes since the start of Israel's offensive.

Videos showed flames light up the sky as the sounds of Israeli bombings and gunfire reverberated across the city.

Displaced families have been fleeing a local hospital as fighting closes in.

Meanwhile, medicines are being sent for Israeli hostages held by Hamas in exchange for more aid for Palestinian civilians under a Qatar-mediated deal.

The White House says Qatar has also been overseeing "very serious, extensive discussions" about a possible new hostage release deal, which were joined by a US envoy.

"This is the loudest sound of armed clashes [between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters] that I've ever heard," Yasser Zaqzouq, who has been sheltering at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis with his family, told the BBC.

"This is the first time we saw such scenes [of air strikes]. We were in terror. All the kids were screaming and crying."

A local journalist, Tariq Dahlan, said: "There is a state of panic among the displaced people in the hospital."

"People are running away from this area towards the West, but nobody knows where they're going and what his fate will be."

Israeli tanks were said to be just metres from the hospital.

A woman in southern Gaza, who did not wish to be named, said children could not sleep "because of the sounds of missiles".

"We are living in fear and terror," she told the BBC, adding that many of the children had begun to wet themselves out of fear.

"The air strikes were very intense and very close around my house," another resident who lives opposite Nasser hospital, Abu Omar Al-Husseini, told the BBC.

"We fled under fire at dawn today. We carried a few blankets and walked for 5km (3.1 miles) to reach the entrance to the city of Rafah, and now we are in the street, not knowing where to go."

On Wednesday the Jordanian army said its military field hospital in Khan Younis had been badly damaged as a result of Israeli shelling in the area. The Jordanian army said it held Israel responsible for a "flagrant breach of international law".

The UN says that the war has displaced around 85% of Gaza's 2.3 million people, many of whom have been forced to cram into shelters and are struggling to get basic supplies.

In a joint statement, a number of UN special rapporteurs said: "Currently every single person in Gaza is hungry, a quarter of the population are starving and struggling to find food and drinkable water, and famine is imminent."

Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, has said that the intense stage of Israel's military operations against Hamas would "soon" wind down in the south of Gaza, including Khan Younis, where it is thought local leaders of the armed group may be hiding.

He said that the military had already switched to more targeted action in the north, where it began its ground offensive.

Netanyahu publicly rejects US push for Palestinian state

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he has told the United States that he opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state once the conflict in Gaza comes to an end.

In a news conference, a defiant Mr Netanyahu vowed to press on with the offensive in Gaza "until complete victory": the destruction of Hamas and return of the remaining Israeli hostages, adding that it could take "many more months".

With almost 25,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and 85% of the Strip's population displaced, Israel is under intense pressure to rein in its offensive and engage in meaningful talks over a sustainable end to the war.

Israel's allies, including the US - and many of its foes - have urged a revival of the long-dormant "two-state solution", in which a future Palestinian state would sit side-by-side with an Israeli one.

The hope in many circles is that the current crisis could force the warring parties back to diplomacy, as the only viable alternative to endless cycles of violence. But from Mr Netanyahu's comments, his intention appears quite the opposite.

Speaking to reporters following Mr Netanyahu's latest comments, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby recognised that the US and Israel "obviously" see things differently.

Earlier on Thursday, Mr Netanyahu said Israel must have security control over all land west of the River Jordan, which would include the territory of any future Palestinian state.

"This is a necessary condition, and it conflicts with the idea of (Palestinian) sovereignty. What to do? I tell this truth to our American friends, and I also stopped the attempt to impose a reality on us that would harm Israel's security," he said.

Mr Netanyahu has spent much of his political career opposing Palestinian statehood, boasting just last month that he was proud to have prevented its establishment, so his latest remarks come as no surprise.

But the very public rebuttal of Washington's diplomatic push, and determination to stay the current military course, show the chasm widening with Israel's western allies.

Since the 7 October attacks - the worst in Israel's history, when Hamas gunmen killed about 1,300 Israelis and took some 240 hostage - the US has supported its right to defend itself.

But as the death toll in Gaza has grown, and the scenes of horror there have abounded, Western governments have called for Israeli restraint.

The White House has repeatedly tried to influence Israel's military policy: urging more precision-guided weapons rather than the blanket air strikes; discouraging a ground offensive; and calling for a two-state solution, with a role for the Palestinian Authority in post-conflict Gaza.

Mr Kirby said the US has been "exceedingly clear" about what it wants Gaza to look like after the war.

"We want governance in Gaza that's representative of the aspirations of the Palestinian people, that they have a vote and a voice in what that looks like and that there's no reoccupation of Gaza," he said.

Washington's advice has frequently fallen on deaf ears or been met by outright rejection - often publicly so, during visits by the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

That, in turn, has hardened frustration in some American circles over the Biden administration's apparent blanket support for Israel, with strident calls to put conditions on US aid to its Middle East ally.

Israel's prime minister's comments will please his dwindling support base and the far-right ministers who prop up his government.

But they will dismay those at home and abroad who are increasingly horrified by the human cost of this war. Recent polls show most Israelis want him to prioritise bringing the remaining hostages home over the potentially impossible aim of destroying Hamas.

EU ministers to meet Israeli and Palestinian top diplomats on Monday

EU foreign ministers will hold a series of meetings on Monday with counterparts from Israel, the Palestinian Authority and key Arab nations about the war in Gaza and prospects for a future peace settlement, reports AFP citing official sources.

The Israeli foreign minister, Israel Katz, and his Palestinian counterpart, Riyad al-Maliki, are not expected to meet each other.

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia will also meet European ministers in Brussels. According to AFP, European diplomats said their aim is to sound out each side over ways to end the violence on the ground and the next steps towards a longer-term solution.

The EU has struggled for a united stance on the conflict in Gaza as staunch backers of Israel such as Germany have rejected demands for an immediate ceasefire from the likes of Spain and Ireland.

EU officials have sketched out broad demands for “the day after” the current war ends in Gaza, calling for no long-term Israeli occupation, an end to Hamas’s rule and a role for the Palestinian Authority in running the territory.

The 27-nation bloc, along with the US, believes the creation of a Palestinian state remains the only viable way to secure a lasting peace. But Israel’s rightwing prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Thursday flatly rejected that suggestion.

In the face of growing violence across the region, EU countries this week gave initial backing to setting up a naval mission to help protect shipping in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi.

A proposal for deployment says it could have three frigates and a mandate to defend ships, but not attack the Houthis onshore, like a US-led coalition operating in the region. EU ministers meeting on Monday are set to discuss the mission, but it is only expected to be finalised next month.

The Netherlands and Germany have said they are willing to contribute ships to mission.

Senior Iran Revolutionary Guard officials killed in Syria strike blamed on Israel

Four senior members of Iran's security forces have been killed in a suspected air strike on the Syrian capital.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard blamed Israel for the attack, which it said killed four military advisers as well as a number of Syrian forces.

Israel has not commented. For years it has carried out strikes on Iranian-linked targets in Syria.

Such strikes have intensified since the Israel-Gaza war began following Hamas's 7 October attacks on Israel.

Senior figures among the Revolutionary Guard - a major military, political and economic force in Iran - have been present in Syria since the civil war began there in 2011, helping to support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad against widespread rebellion to his rule.

Saturday's attack is understood to have taken place in the Mazzeh neighbourhood, south-west Damascus, an area home to a military airport, as well as the UN headquarters in Damascus, embassies and restaurants.

A resident told AFP news agency that they saw "explosions" in the western Mazzeh area and "a large cloud of smoke".

"The sound was similar to a missile explosion, and minutes later I heard the sound of ambulances," he added.

Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency said the attacks killed the IRGC's Syria intelligence chief, his deputy, as well as two other Guard members.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency quoted a military source saying it had managed to stop some of the missiles, but that the attacks had killed some people, and "injured a number of civilians". Buildings were also destroyed, it said.

Videos, which the BBC has not verified, showed a large cloud of smoke and buildings destroyed.

Last month a suspected Israeli air strike just outside Damascus killed a senior IRGC commander.

The Middle East has been on heightened alert since 7 October, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,300 people, mainly civilians, and taking 240 hostages back to Gaza. More than 132 hostages are thought to still be held in the territory.

More than 24,900 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its military response, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Israel says its ground and air operation in Gaza is aimed at destroying Hamas.

The conflict has raised concerns about a wider war spreading around the region, particularly between fierce rivals Israel and Iran, and amid a series of overlapping crises.

Israel is targeting the Palestinian group Hamas, which is supported by Tehran. It is also exchanging fire with Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria are also targeting US forces in the region, and the US and UK have struck the Houthis - another Iran-backed group - in Yemen, who have been attacking ships in the Red Sea.

Fears about an even wider conflict were further heightened this week, when Iran exchanged strikes with its neighbour Pakistan.

On Tuesday, Iran admitted carrying out a missile and drone attack in south-western Pakistan, killing two children, saying it was targeting an "Iranian terrorist group" in Pakistan.

Days later, Islamabad hit back, launching strikes it said were targeting "terrorist hideouts" in south-eastern Iran, killing nine people.

Although both sides insisted they were targeting militant bases in each other's countries, Iran and Pakistan withdrew their ambassadors from the respective capitals.

But following talks, diplomatic ties were restored.

Israel financed Hamas to weaken the Palestinian Authority, Josep Borrell claims

"We believe that a two-state solution should be imposed from the outside to bring peace," Borrell explained.

"But I insist, Israel, by continuing to reject this solution, has gone as far as to create Hamas themselves. Yes, Hamas has been financed by the Israeli government in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah," he added.

Palestinians tell of fears for the future as war destroys Gaza

As Israel intensifies its offensive on Khan Younis, Palestinians in Gaza have spoken of their fears for the future.

Some of the heaviest battles in Gaza in recent days have been around the southern city.

Already displaced families have been fleeing the area of the Nasser hospital, the largest still functioning in the territory.

More than 24,900 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its response to the 7 October Hamas attacks, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The Hamas attack in Israel killed around 1,300 people, most of them civilians, and saw 240 hostages taken back to Gaza.

Israel says its air and ground operation in Gaza is aimed at destroying Hamas.

The majority of Gaza's 2.3 million people are displaced and fight daily to find food, drink and medicine.

Mohammed al-Khaldi, a father of two children displaced from Gaza City, told the BBC: "I lost my home, my shop and my source of income. I am no longer able to provide the simplest requirements of life for my children.

"I hold the Israeli occupation responsible for the massive destruction, but I do not absolve Hamas of responsibility for everything that happened," he said.

Hamas is the Palestinian group which has run Gaza since 2007. Its military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, was thought to have about 30,000 members before the 7 October attack.

"The worst thing that could happen is that we return to the previous situation, to a war every two or three years. The situation was difficult before the war and has become catastrophic now," Mr Khaldi said.

"The prices of goods have risen tenfold and most basic necessities are not available. I wish to die a thousand times every day when I look into my children's eyes and feel terrible helplessness because I am not able to feed them."

Most of the people I spoke to in Khan Younis said that the Israeli army was advancing towards the city centre.

They are working underground more than above ground, said Naji Mahmoud, one of the displaced people from Gaza City. Mr Mahmoud witnessed a major Israeli attack that took place in northern Gaza and left for Khan Younis during the week-long humanitarian truce at the end of November.

"We feel that the ground is shaking under us, something like an earthquake, and this is repeated almost every evening, the bombings seem to target the tunnels," he told the BBC. "When we were in Gaza [City], most of the attacks were from the air."

Manifestations of security breakdown are spreading throughout Gaza, and people are complaining about the phenomenon of theft and armed robbery.

A journalist who requested anonymity told the BBC: "I was returning from my job in Rafah late at night. I had three masked people stop me - they were carrying knives, and one of them was carrying a gun.

"They searched the car for anything valuable. One of them noticed that I was a journalist and allowed me to leave."

On the streets of Rafah masked police officers with guns in police cars can be seen, but people are complaining that they are not doing enough to deter merchants who monopolise goods and raise prices in an insane manner.

"I bought a bag of wheat marked Unrwa [the UN agency for Palestinian refugees] for $100 (£79; €92) - 10 times the original price. Why are the police not arresting the war traders who sell wheat most likely stolen from the UN aid agencies?" complained Mohammed Sheik Khalil.

"I can't find milk for my baby, my son has autism and has not received treatment for months. I cannot calm him down, and his condition has deteriorated after we made great strides in treating him before the war."

Hamas always worked according to emergency plans during the previous four wars, but this time it is different.

The Israeli army has destroyed the government system, killed a large number of security and police officers, and destroyed security headquarters and police stations, leaving ordinary crime uncontrolled.

Neveen Imadedin, a mother displaced from her home in Gaza City and now living in the southern town of Rafah, said: "We want the war to end but with a sustained long-term political solution. We want our state, not to return to the no-peace, no-war situation.

"Look what happened to us, thieves stole everything from my house, my clothes, home furniture and even solar panels."

"My house is located in the western part of Gaza City and was hit by four shells from the Israeli tanks that were controlling the neighbourhood.

"We are displaced here in Rafah and before that [we were] in Khan Younis. We have no money and no home, the unstoppable wars between Hamas and Israel have destroyed our lives."

A businessman called Mohammed agreed.

"We have lived under unjust rule for more than 16 years. Hamas imposed heavy taxes on us and now they have dragged us into a devastating war in which we lost our property, money and homes," he told the BBC.

"I used to live in a good house and work in trade. Now what will we do? The crossings are closed, the company has been destroyed, and the house is not fit for habitation due to the destruction.

"The worst thing that could happen to us is that we return under Hamas rule when the war ends."

Netanyahu defies Biden over Palestinian state

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has again rejected the idea of creating a Palestinian state.

His comments came hours after a phone call with US President Joe Biden after which the US leader indicated Mr Netanyahu may still accept the idea.

Mr Netanyahu's remarks appeared to deepen a public divide with the US.

The US believes a Palestinian state alongside Israel - known as a "two-state solution" - is vital for long-term stability.

But the White House acknowledged this week the US and Israeli governments "clearly see things differently".

Speaking to reporters after the two leaders held a call for the first time in almost a month, Mr Biden insisted a two-state solution was still possible with Mr Netanyahu in office.

"There are a number of types of two-state solutions. There's a number of countries that are members of the UN that... don't have their own militaries," he said.

But on Saturday Mr Netanyahu doubled down on his position, which he has held for much of his political career and repeated earlier this week.

A statement released by his office read: "In his conversation with President Biden, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his policy that after Hamas is destroyed Israel must retain security control over Gaza to ensure that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel, a requirement that contradicts the demand for Palestinian sovereignty."

Also on Saturday, in a post on X - formerly Twitter - he said Israel must retain "security control over the entire area west of [River] Jordan", an area which also encompasses the Israeli-occupied West Bank territory.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said on Sunday that Mr Netanyahu's statement was "disappointing", even though it was not a surprise.

The comments will dampen hopes in some circles that the Gaza crisis could result in Israeli and Palestinian leaders restarting diplomatic negotiations and kickstarting the dormant peace process.

Mr Netanyahu's increasing isolation abroad comes amid continuing support for the war at home, coupled with protests over the fate of the estimated 130 hostages still being held inside Gaza by Hamas.

Hamas killed about 1,300 people - mostly civilians - and took 240 hostages in their surprise attack on southern Israel on 7 October.

Thousands of protesters, including relatives of those still missing, gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday, urging Mr Netanyahu to reach a truce to allow the hostages home.

Gil Dickmann, whose cousin was captured on 7 October, said: "Dear Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, we believe that you can bring them back. We believe in you.

"We know that you can sign this deal and bring about this victory to all the citizens of Israel. Just do it, Bibi. Just do it. Bring the hostages back home."

Israeli forces have continued to push into southern Gaza, saying they are searching for top Hamas officials they believe are hiding in Khan Younis, the Strip's second biggest city.

The Israel Defense Forces said they had raided a tunnel in Khan Younis that had been used to hold hostages, although they were not there when it was discovered.

While the focus of the fighting is now in southern Gaza, there have been renewed clashes around the northern town of Jabalia, as Palestinian fighters reportedly advanced while Israel tried to move its soldiers and tanks south.

Almost three months since Israel launched its ground invasion of Gaza, its army - vastly superior to Hamas in strength and equipment - is still facing significant resistance across the territory.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said on Sunday that 25,105 people had been killed in the territory since 7 October. More than 60,000 had also been injured, it said.

Middle East crisis live: UN secretary general accuses Israel of mass destruction and killing "CIVILIANS" on an ‘unprecedented scale’

UN secretary general condemns Israel for 'heartbreaking' and 'unprecedented' killings in Gaza

The UN’s secretary general, António Guterres, has denounced Israel for the “heartbreaking” killings of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, Reuters reports.

“Israel’s military operations have spread mass destruction and killed civilians on a scale unprecedented during my time as secretary-general,” Guterres said at the opening of a summit of the G77+China in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

“This is heartbreaking and utterly unacceptable. The Middle East is a tinder-box, we must do all we can to prevent conflict from igniting across the region.”

His comments come after Gaza health authorities said that Israeli strikes have killed over 25,000 Palestinians since 7 October.

Guterres added that the refusal to accept the two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians is totally unacceptable, saying denying Palestinians the right to statehood “would indefinitely prolong a conflict that has become a major threat to global peace and security”.

^ It's not the Israelis who is killing civilians, no it is Hamas who is killing their own citizens.

Israel is not fighting against Hamas but against civilians, implementing a criminal policy of bombings [EN/AR/HE]

When the war broke out, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel would retaliate forcefully, and the IDF Spokesperson was quick to make clear that “the emphasis is on damage, not precision.” These statements clearly align with Israel’s policy since the start of the war: hundreds of tons of bombs have been dropped on the Gaza Strip so far, leading to a horrifying death toll of more than 15,000 people, including more than 6,000 babies, children and teenagers and approximately 4,000 women. Entire residential neighborhoods have collapsed, including high-rises, and the streets are scenes of destruction. Many people are still buried under the rubble, their fate unknown. Some 1.8 million people have been displaced from their homes and are crowding together in inhumane conditions, without enough food, water or medication.

There's things I do not understand, while be in support of the Palestine and the civilians living there and accusing Israel for killing them, BUT is absent when it comes to accuse Russian for killing civilians in Ukraine.
