View Full Version : [WIP] Japanese Campaign
Yeah, noticed it right at the start. Unfortunately, they made the @!$#@ thing part of the base ship model, instead of what it should have been, a stand-alone object like a plane, placed like a plane on the ship.
BTW, I never bothered to look at this, but must you use the german campaign, or is it possible to add player countries?

I am not sure what you are asking. We are only using the German Campaign because Keltos built the subs using Uboats. Any country is available for non-playable ships and bases, but the catch is the playable subs. The files are all different. The locations of the files are all different. In campaign even the folder structure is different.
I actually started this Campaign using my Playable Sen Toku built on a Gato but it was Japanese and was attacked by Allied ships. I had Japanese bases set up and started the Campaign using the Pacific campaign.
But Keltos (along with all the others I have seen) used the German subs to make playable subs and ships and since the files and locations are all different, they don't work on the Pacific Campaign side. With enough file changes I suppose it could be possible not to use the german side but I have not tried it.
As for countries, any country is available for non-playable ships and bases.
The only thing that would have been much easier is adding additional tubes. Keltos built a Truant which was built on a US sub and it had 8 forward tubes and 2 rear tubes and I made a launch panel with smaller lights to fit the 8 lights. In the uboat is doesn't seem to add lights even though the tubes are added, since there are only 6 to work with.
I don't know if all that babbling answered what you wanted to know.

I meant playable ships (subs).
Meaning replicate all the GE_XXXXXX folders as JP_XXXXXX, and have the game present us with THREE campaign options, USN, IJN, and KM.
I was just wondering if this was possible with 1.5. Seems like the best way would have been for them to define "playable" via some mechanism in the UPC files.
Again, I haven't looked, but that would be ideal. Note that you can always remap (clone) all the IJN subs so they do not take the place of the german ones.

As for the subs they are already cloned.

Have you tried creating a folder like UPCDataGE, called UPCDataJP, then lesse, add stuff in menu.txt...
6000=GERMAN CAMPAIGN
6001=SWITCH SIDE
6050=Bulkhead
6060=Press F1 for help
6061=HELP (F1)
6065=NAVAL SUBMARINE SCHOOL
6066=NAVAL ACADEMY MÜRWIK
6070=AMERICAN SINGLE MISSIONS
6071=GERMAN SINGLE MISSIONS
6075=AMERICAN WAR PATROLS
6076=GERMAN WAR PATROLS
6080=Next ship type
6085=American
6086=German
See the gaps?
Add:
6002=JAPANESE CAMPAIGN
6067=NAVAL ACADEMY KURE
6071=JAPANESE SINGLE MISSIONS
etc.
Copy the German UPC stuff, and change all the names.
Dunno about the menu____.ini glop, that's greek to me.

The subs we use ARE cloned and do not replace the German ones. It does not create any problems in Japanese Campaign, it does create problem with adding to other Campaigns because some necessary files get overwritten. For example, flotilla files, Localization file etc.
With my limited knowledge I believe there are too many things we can't change to make the "replace GE_xxx to JP_xxxxx to work". I could be wrong, usually am, but I don't know how. I think there either is a lot that is hardcoded or there is stuff I don't know about.
Here is what I do know since I have done it.
I can make any country playable in the Pacific Campaign as long as the ship/sub is built on a Fleetboat.
I can make any country playable in the uboat Campaign as long as the ship/sub is built on a uboat.
I can change any ship/sub from friend to foe in either campaign as long as it is not the playable unit.
Here is an example in a German Single Mission;
That is a playable Porpoise Class Fleet Boat but is NOT set to "human control" therefore not the "playable unit" and I made it German. This is NOT a cloned sub it is the 'in game' Porpoise, the only change is I told the game it's German. (in fact if I hope I don't forget to go back and change it.:lol:)
The US Somers DD is shooting at it
the Japanese Takao is not shooting
the German Armed Merchant is not shooting at it.

You may already know these things, just saying what i know works, as for the rest a lot of it has links from somewhere, but I can't find somewhere.
So, I think some of the things you talk about may work, but would be a lot of work for little gain. I say little gain because you will have to decide which files to use if you make it all Japanese. If you use the German files, you will be limited by those files, if you choose to base it on the Allied side you will use those files. All this can be done much easier by just building your Japanese sub with either a uboat or a fleet boat as the base for it and all the files become available automatically from that side.
Just my 2cents anyway from a very limited knowledge of the game and the inner workings.
Edit: I noticed the new post after I posted this (I had to leave to snowblow the driveway) and the Single missions are not separate, I don't remember if they were in 1.4 or not. So it is things like that I am talking about. There are files that just don't apply. What makes it pick the
"Quick Mission"
instead of:
6070=AMERICAN SINGLE MISSIONS
6071=GERMAN SINGLE MISSIONS
????
And why does it say "Submarine School"
instead of:
6065=NAVAL SUBMARINE SCHOOL
6066=NAVAL ACADEMY MÜRWIK
And when you click on Submarine School it says "American Submarine School" or you switch sides and it says "German Submarine School" so the actual words listed are not used but probably link to the terms that actually are used in the game.
Must be in the menu stuff I guess, but there are so many things like that.

Thanks Sledgehammer.
When I said "but there are so many things like that" I meant everywhere, not just the menu file. But you are right Ctrl F is very handy indeed. But I have used it and found things pointing to files that don't exist. Probably some things left over from SH3 or things that didn't get finished in time.
That is why I have great respect for the modders, they spent a lot of time figuring this stuff out. SH4 is my first ever attempt at modding and it is rewarding sometimes but a pain in the butt other times.
And another reason I like the ideas and comments, sometimes I don't agree, sometimes I have no idea how to do it, but it keeps me thinking and occasionally leads to something unexpected. Maybe even totally different than what I was originally looking for.

It could well be that the sim's developers originally intended to include the option of five playable nations i.e. USN, IJN, KM, RN and RNethN, which would cover all navies which operated submarines in the Far East/Pacific (as SH4 is a Far East/Pacific sub sim, we can exclude other countries which operated subs in WW2 such as Poland, USSR, Italy, Norway etc.).
The numbers sequences and gaps point to such a possibility, for instance:
6065 NAVAL SUBMARINE SCHOOL
6066 NAVAL ACADEMY MÜRWIK
Now (hypothetically) add to these two:
6067 NAVAL ACADEMY ETA JIMA
6068 NAVAL ACADEMY DARTMOUTH (or, more accurately, HMS Dolphin)
6069 NAVAL ACADEMY DEN HELDER (or, because of the occupation of the Netherlands in 1940, NAVAL ACADEMY SOERABAJA)
Similarly, for Single Missions:
6070=AMERICAN SINGLE MISSIONS
6071=GERMAN SINGLE MISSIONS
adding:
6072=JAPANESE SINGLE MISSIONS
6073=BRITISH SINGLE MISSIONS
6074=DUTCH SINGLE MISSIONS
and going on to:
6075=AMERICAN WAR PATROLS
6076=GERMAN WAR PATROLS
again, adding:
6077=JAPANESE WAR PATROLS
6078=BRITISH WAR PATROLS
6079=DUTCH WAR PATROLS
etc.
Might be worth a look if it is possible to add a nation by making all the relevant files/folders and trying to get the links working. I doubt whether we can expect another addon for SH4 which would take care of this for us.

As much as I do find this interesting and want the discussion to continue, I think we have reached a point where the Japanese Campaign thread can be considered Hijacked and would kindly ask that we start a new thread for this discussion.
I do not want it to end but I think it needs it's own thread.
I participated in the discussion also, so I am not blaming anyone, but it is heading in a totally different direction. But I would like to see the discussion continue.

Just a tiny point about the numbers in screen shots. The gothic numbers seem a little out of place. Would it be possible to use the Japanese characters?
The signatures on any documents for promotion etc would look better with a "hanko" seal on them.
Sorry to nitpick and I hope you don't get the wrong impression:oops: This is truly awesome stuff!
PS Hope you overcome the launching planes / minisub problems. Managing to get a shore bombardment mission would be great too!
PPS Assorted photos from Japanese archives being searched for now. Crew of three native Japanese on it!
PPPS Re: ship traffic, off all the major rivers mouths near Japan: literally swarming with fishing boats, sampans and small commercial craft. I watch the trawlers and fishing boat fleets everyday at the entrance of Tokyo Bay, scuttling out of the way of RORO and container ships. Sailing on the surface within 10km of the coast near the four main islands without literally bumping into one would be almost impossible. On the upside not many were fitted with "rajios" so the IJN wouldn't know until they reached port.
^^^ useful info.
While I've not been working on the IJN sub stuff, I HAVE been working on IJN ASW capability, and hopefully new merchant shipping. I think that all the ports could use some upgrades :)

1. Japanese Characters on torp lights I assume you mean, the Japanese Characters I found for numbers were a quite large, several characters for each number. But we may be able to do it.
2 I will make a note of the Hanko seal. Possible.
3 Launching planes from the sub is not going to happen any time soon. I don't know if it can even be done.
4. The minisub works, it is just the way the game is, once you pick a sub for your career, you are stuck with it unless the game offers you a new one. I don't think anyone wants to play the Campaign with a minisub and two torpedos. We were thinking about putting in some Quick missions (single missions) with the minisub to infiltrate different harbors with a specific target.
5. Shore bombardment did happen in the US so we may include one for historical reasons. But there really isn't much to shoot at with a sub.

Sydney harbour was attacked by midget subs trying to get the USS Chicago (they sunk a floating dormitory instead ) while the mother ship waited offshore lobbing shells into suburbia. Please don't forget the little people in Australia! We got hit too!
The port of Darwin in northern Australia was hammered from the air in Feb 1942, as was the seaplane base in Broome, on the NW coast. Including these ports / bases in the map (Broome and Darwin dont exist in SH1.4 vanilla) in the Japanese campaign would make all the Oz skippers very happy indeed.
As for minisubs, I thought just carrying them to the drop off point in the mother sub would be the mission-not a very high survival rate for mini subs, unless you consider the immortality achieved by being on permanant display in some foreign war memorial!! Bloddy things might as well be a Kaiten! Wave goodbye to the uppity XO, seal him into his first and last command of his own and get back to your own career by teasing the local DDs into hunting you with a few shells into defenceless suburbia. Now that's a mission!:up:

actually, at the end of war, since they were short on sub torpedoes, minisubs were fitted with a nose-explosive charge, and thsu became Kaitens too !!!!

Hi Anton88, welcome. Appreciate your offer to help. We are not sure where we are going with the voices. We were trying to find someone (through some contacts) that actually speaks Japanese. We were trying to stay away from movies for a few reasons.
1 They are copyrighted.
2. They could be saying "Bring me a cup of coffee", I wouldn't know.
3. There is usually background noise and music that would mess it up.
But we may end up going that way. If you want to try a few examples and post them, we would certainly listen and see what you have. I don't want to sound like I don't appreciate your offer, I do. We were just trying to go in a different direction, but if you want to take the time for some examples, we will take the time to listen to them. But I don't want you to do a lot of work for nothing. We have to try to keep the voice files as small as possible so it doesn't get too big.
As for the "All I ask in return" is faces and uniforms, it is on the list but we have a lot of work to do and with Real Life, we are behind schedule from where we want to be. And it is a big task especially the faces. So if setting conditions that we must do them in order for your help then thank you but NO. We are beginners at this and are doing the best we can with the knowledge we have.

:) ..
Its not a condition.. its just something that I'd really hoped for.. Having crew with German uniforms and faces does not make it authentic.
As for the Japanese voices, I see the point you are trying to make. The thing is, we got all we need.. We do have Japanese Submarine movies out there, and with the exact phrases/orders/shouting we need. As for the copyright, I don't think its gonna be a big deal to to this. (Personally the producers would be happy to see this, .. you know the Japanese like to glorify their war heroes in movies, alot more then in the west). I don't think they would object to have their actor's voices in a submarine game.
-- Look at those that made the mod for Silent Hunter III (Gray wolves..)... they used the speech from Das Boot.. (like Alllarrrrrrrrmmmm!!... schnell, schnell..etc)
And the German marches from ww2, and the Tipperrary song... I would not worry so much about copy right...
Besides, we are not making profit from this.. none of us.
I think its more realistic to have the sounds from the movie, then have a person talk.. and all my films have Subtitles, so I know what they are saying.
Another thing I was gonna suggest... you might know the Japanese faces from Battlefield 1942.. (everyone has played this game at one time or another)..
you think those faces might help us in any way in modelling the crew? Your're the expert in animation,.. not me :hmmm:

Hi,
I think that looks like Doenitz's signature, but it should be in fact Yamamoto's signature, or that of Hiroyasu Fushimi (or other commanders of IJN). If you can find out the equivalent of Admiral Doenitz in the Japanese Navy, (the submarine chief) I buy you a drink.. i dont know who he is

That is a picture before the Signature was changed to a Japanese signature (which is just a Japanese character, but Wiki said it was a signature.) But Keltos just got his hands on a document where we may get a better signature. That was at the very beginning of the project, we did not have much done at all at that point.
And no I don't know Battlefield, I only play two games, SH4 and Falcon. So I don't know anything about it.
And as for an expert in animation, I have never done animation. I have never done any modding until I started this, so I learn as I go that is why it is taken longer than it should and why I don't want to hold the project up for faces and uniforms. I wanted at least a Beta release a while ago, but it didn't work out. I am not saying that once we release it we will never make any more improvements, we definately will improve as we find time and learn how.

If I am moderately satisfied with how the sound files turn out, I will send you many samples. If I am extreamly satisfied, and they turned out beyond my expectations, and they have been tested in-game and work like a dream.. I will not send anyone samples, but will send the final product shortly before you guys release the beta version. - surprise -
as for faces.. I got a better source.. Call of duty - total war (Pacific campaign),
has ultra realistic graphics and japanese faces, and uniforms. I will post later some screenshots.. and after that, we'll need an 'expert' that could model the crew from these..

:salute:
Hold your horses there! in the sound\speech folder there are 8 different folders : one per voice.
in each : there are 222 different sentences ! I already made a small mod from the movie Gochin (filmed during I-10's fifth war patrol, real sounds real sinkings etc..) but since it has only been downloaded 30 times it is clearly not a priority as we have other matters to fix.
Modding is a slow and painstainking process, I would know after the ships I did, Peabody does with the japanese campaign, Takao, Captainscurvy, Sledgehammer427 and certainly Skwasjer do, it takes time and patience to get it right. We don't have any Ubi SDK to make those files, though S3D is now pretty close ;). We have to reverse-engineer everything they made, and that's a pain. Sounds can only be mono and this length max etc... f.i. the develloppers' sounds are always smaller in size than mine were, even for the same time length !
this is exactly which we don't rush the campaign. we have to get the subs to work perfectly, they also need japanese weapons all the way, not only torpedoes and submarines.
If you look at the 3D Torpedo room thread on the AOTD (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141858) with its 34318 views you'll understand how long it could take to model japanese submarine interiors, if we had those kind of pictures and blueprints, which, but for the midget sub and the Koryu, we don't have at the moment. (look at post 281 and you'll see what kind of pictures to exist, USN mission to Japan 1946)
The campaign layout is made from RL shipping movements of either the IJN or its merchant fleet. I for one would love it to get as real as possible, and still playable by most out there. I had to buy a new computer to play this game.
As for the face, I have made a few, using the japanese sailor faces that are ingame, I just bumped that thread for you. Since I don't know how they mod the face and split the head afterwards to create those dds I have to work on a skewed image which is a lot harder than using photos for faces f.i.
As for the signature thing, look up posts 51 and especially post #76 on this very thread, you'll see where we are headed. In post #104 Sledgehammer427 already suggested that Dönitz didn't sign that, didn't he now ?
We are not going to use copyrighted material in this mod. Faces or otherwise, unless we have the consent from their designer like I did from John Meeks and Michel Guyot (www.subart.net (http://www.subart.net)) who nicely donated the digitized copy of their work for the campaign's loading screens and intro screen. This is how it works, you ask, if they decline, you don't use the material.
Then there are new things too like on post #133 ... or 139 if you like the rewards ;) but they have to be right. Or #157 if you wanna breathe underwater f.i. then there was the real kaiten model (post # 181), the last add-on we just implemeted is the type 93 naval mine thanks to Darkfish who made the files, and just that took a while.
We are trying to get all aspects right, as much as it is feasible anyways.
This said I look forward to hearing a few japanese sounds you'll make as long as you follow our guidelines.

THE TRANSPACIFIC VOYAGE OF H.I.J.M.S. I-400
[ed. notes: The document on which this page was based was to have formed the nucleus of Tom Paine's memoirs. It began as a simple reply to a request for information from Commander Compton-Hall, who was then researching Submarine Warfare: Monsters & Midgets.6 It served as the basis of a short piece that appeared in the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings in 1986. An expanded version was published privately by the Submarine Warfare Library in February 1991. He continued to work on it from time to time over several months, leading up to this version.
Thomas O. Paine died from cancer on 4 May 1992. He had continued his work on submarine bibliography up to the very end. His personal papers are in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress in Washington DC; his massive Submarine Library is now a special collection of the Nimitz Library in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis MD. His biography is online at the NASA History site. Had he lived to see the flowering of the 'net, surely he would have made excellent use of it for sharing his wealth of information about submarines, space travel, and the many other subjects in which he took a lively interest. This page is but a piece, a very small piece, of what he would have done.
This saga recounts my adventures during the last voyage of His Imperial Japanese Majesty's Sensuikan Toku (Special Submarines). In 1945 I returned from World War II as Executive Officer and Navigator of the U.S. Navy prize crew in one of these aircraft-carrying giants: H.I.J.M.S. I-400. Sailing her from Sasebo, Occupied Japan, to Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, seemed a fitting finale to my career in the Submarine Service.
I'll begin by describing Japan's Top Secret submersible aircraft carriers, summarize their operational history, recount my experience in the Occupation of Japan, explain how our prize crew learned to operate the unusual I-boats, and tell the tale of I-400's eventful transpacific passage. An abridged version of this yarn has been published in U.S.N.I. Proceedings.1
The March 2005 discovery of the wreck of the I-401 prompted updates to the Wikipedia I-400 class submarine page.
The Russian Miletara Project site has what appears to be an online digest of Commander Hashimoto's memoirs including this photo of the I-401 with Seiran on catapault (see also this colourised view) and of I-400 class boats docking and moored to a sub tender with their hangar doors open.

Living Conditions on IJN subs ..continued:
Dorr Carpenter and Norman Polmar's book Submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy (Annapolis, Maryland: Naval Institute Press, 1986).
"Submarine crews, as well as the rest of the seagoing navy, tended to have preferential treatment with respect to food and cigarettes. At sea the submariners had a diet of boiled white rice, pickled vegetables, dried seaweed, eggs, beef, pork, various fish, and usually for breakfast, miso-shiro, a vegetable soup. Refrigeration was severely limited, and fresh meat, fish, and vegetables would be exhausted in about a week, after which canned food was the staple. There was little coffee but plenty of tea. Officers and men generally ate the same food, their daily submarine ration amounting to some 3,300 calories, quite high for wartime Japan. Sake and beer were available to submarine crews ashore, while at sea a commanding officer could issue alcohol under special conditions. But drunkenness ashore or afloat was not tolerated.
Life in the cramped, un-air-conditioned submarines was difficult. On long deployments bags of rice and canned food filled every available space, and just moving through the submarine was a difficult task. The newer boats had cooling systems; the older craft were always very humid. Rats were common on board."
There was only a very limited Fresh water ration on the IJN submarines, so washing was only done when they could swim in the sea - they also had only a very primitive Heads which would not function when submerged, hence the somewhat challenging conditions in the I-Boats.

Discussion on Tully's Port
http://propnturret.com/tully/viewtopic.php?t=269&sid=f3227e79a7cbf44669c21e5d02baac11
about living conditions on IJN subs..this following was the personal opinion of one poster and his comments are not supported by other evidence..(the IJN ran very clean ships, and there was in fact ample water supply on the I 400's as noted later on in the source he is quoting....but such prejudices abound in discussion of IJN to this day sadly)
Referring to the IJN 400 from the journal of Tom Paine desribed above.
"After she was taken over from the Japanese on her way home from patrol you can imagine that the I-400 required a massive clean-up from stem to stern. The field day started with all hands moving aboard the U.S.S. Proteus, after which cylinders of fumigating gas were opened in every compartment and the boat sealed. Next morning bushel after bushel of dead rats and cockroaches were swept up. I'd noted with some revulsion on the Ha-boats the occasional rat leaping through a hatch from compartment to compartment, and hordes of scurrying roaches when a light was switched on, but I'd no idea that these boats carried so many verminous shipmates on patrol. If the I-400 had been rigged for dive when the rats and roaches were thrown overboard the Diving Officer would have had to order: Flood two hundred pounds to Auxiliary Tank from sea. "
I believe this is the reason why U-Boat personnel were not allowed on board I-8 or I-30 when they docked in France, as the Japanese Officers and Embassy personnel thought they would lose face by showing anyone inside the Submarine.
Your point about the better conditions on USN Ships over Royal Navy ones is absolutely true, by and large, not helped by the fact that some ships were transferred direct from Arctic Convoy duty to the Indian Ocean after European Hostilities ceased - they had plenty of Heating but no Air Conditioning, making things a little challenging for the Crews!
At least the Royal Navy Submarines that started to arrive in the Indian Ocean from late 1943 onwards were transferred from the Mediterranean, so were used to the kind of conditions they encountered (although the high humidity played havoc with any electronics they had).
A great point, made elsewhere, was that the key reason for installing Air Conditioning was to improve the reliability of the various items of Electronic Equipment used in the ships, and not Crew Comfort (although the siting of this equipment by some left a lot to be desired - for example, Type IX U-Boats had a key item of Electronic Equipment sited directly below the Main Hatchway, so was drenched in sea water every time they opened the hatch!).
----------------------------------
rebuttal from same forum:
If you read the NTJ Reports they point out that living quarters were cramped by western standards, but the ships that were still manned were clean throughout. In one of them a team went to RYUHO and commented on how neat their spare parts lockers were and that the decks were waxed, etc.

I have the Sen Toku playable but it is the Fleet boat side, I am going to convert it to Uboat side. Keltos tells me it's too big, but I like it. You will see it in the campaign at least at a dock, whether we make it a playable or not we don't know, it actually never was used, the war ended when it was on it's first mission.

I'm not sure about the "Launch aircraft option", if we will have that or not, i'd love to see that in the game..
but If I can make a small suggestion... regarding the Kaiten human torpedo.. we should have an option to launch them,..(not fire them from the torpedo tubes).
Each sub carried about 4 - 6 kaitens, towards the end.. as well as their regular torpedo loads. If they are in the tubes its.. 'unrealistic'

Unfortunately the game has some limitations. Some can be overcome, some can not. You can not put a flyable plane on the gound, water, or ship, it will explode. There are two sets of planes. Flying ones and decoration, the plane on the Sen Toku, and any aircraft carriers are decoration. You can not spawn a plane (or anything else) within 20 miles of your sub. So even if you wanted to make a flyable plane appear and then take off, it won't happen. (that close to the sea, it would most likely crash anyway.) I assume they set it up like that so ships,subs and planes don't suddenly appear in front of you.
Technically you could "launch' Kaitens from an invisible tube on deck but we only have so many buttons and then you have to change tubes with the keyboard so you don't know which one is selected. And unless you are going to play the game with scuba gear and sit on deck, you won't know where it came from anyway. And it isn't even 'driven' like a Kaiten would be, we have to use an Acoustic to simulate the driving. You could also simulate by putting 4 Kaitens on the deck, go out and fire 4 Kaiten and return to base with 4 Kaitens on the deck, because that is how the game works. The torpedo does not actually appear until you fire it.

I still think it's too big, and I never touched it since you made it playable, your thing so to speak, although it was the first sub I too tried to make playable way back when ;)
Well at least now we have the right guns for it and 8 torpedo tubes and lights, so it's ok, I wouldn't wanna have had it with the regular six tubes, missing 2 so to speak. now with 8 it's alright.
you still won't be able to submerged in coastal waters :har: even with the Type AM (i-14) it's hard !!!

ps that dual mount 5.5 inch really is something ! yesterday I played peabody's convoy attack mission (I usually get sunk at the end of either of his missions...) got two ships with my first salvo of type 89's, the third missed (I know I should fire first at the farthest target but...), then my other two salvoes didn't sink much, a damn liberty ship even refused to sink after one hit !
so I surfaced and engaged in a gun battle with the two escorts at first, sank them then engaged the third one.
one by one the ships went down.. thanks to this beautiful gun :)

Chow line Japanese style...sushi! i think it was still flapping :) Detailed shots of Navigator and middy class in nav, More excellent ship board life shots, underway in heavy weather, foul weather gear, actual voice recordings ( i am guessing but not sure), engine room underway, and crash dive proceedure crew coming below being timed by the officers.

Battle Stations alert (they use a bell alarum plus loudspeaker), crew manning stations for dive, and actual footage of bow going under, and great view of diving planes and the planesmen at their stations! Periscope in action, view thru it, command bridge, and sufacing with an underwater cam catching the view from the bow. Deck gun crew manning gun and in action. Crew daily routine, Crew playing Go ! (looks like a close game :)) And officers playing cards.
Highlight of No. 4 so far....narrator saying "Bon Appetit!" and shot of crew picking up fish from the foredeck for dinner :) And close up of flying fish! Vitamins at dinner! Ships doc doing his work. Note: officers have special strip on shirt. ah ha! they used special dilating eye drops for night vision! :) Very moving view of Captain coming on the bridge stopping to bow to Emperor's shrine, great series of him climbing up to the top of the conning tower, gives details of those spaces. Torpedo firing proceedure, timed. Hand signal passing.

Salute.

Good move Anton, to XP, much better than Vista. You may have to reformat the drive from scratch i fear. I had to do that on one of my systems, well my tech did. I will ask him tomorrow for hints.
It was a joy and also somewhat painful to study those movies close up and find pics, i know some veterans from the IJN, and they have tried to describe their experiences to me, but there is nothing like seeing things with ones own eyes, the daily life and the ship board reality of those men, their fellowship and their young young faces.....and such fervor and faith. Truly we were two great nations, the US and Nippon and both so true to their own ideas, it was a great tragedy that we ended up in that conflict and so much bravery and courage and absolute loyalty to duty ....on both sides....
i have heard this from both sides in veterans i know, and great respect between them then..and now. thanks again to both you and to Keltos for getting this to us all, it is ...a very moving experince. I have more pics but had to take some time to be with my feelings that were raised by this experince..... before posting.

Good move Anton, to XP, much better than Vista. .
.. you know the japanese had the largest subs in ww2, and some with between 120 - 155 men on board. On average about 100 men maybe..Their hulls were much thinner then the german ones, so they could not dive as deep... I can't imagine when one of these went down.. The war was horrible.. The ocean took tens of thousands and left no trace..
anyways, let me know if you can help me with my PC,
The system is an Acer Aspire 15.6" 5735-4401 model, and it's got 4 Gigs if Ram, therefore it came with the 64bit version of Vista. Let me know if you can help.
ps: some of this propaganda in these films we could use as radio broadcast in the game..

Ok I will ask him, I am a dummy about tech but i have a really good tech and i will ask him if it is possible and how to put XP on there.
ys, knew that about the big I 400's and some of the other big boats. We found a journal by a US Naval officer who was on prize crew of one of them, and I am hopeful we can get a copy of the whole thing.
I think the movie has already helped Keltos a lot he has been working with it diligently and got sounds and lots of info off of it, it is a wonderful resource....
will see about the XP thing and let you know if i can find anything out.

yes indeed, I didn't release it to the whole community because of probable copyrights for the movie : although it is from 1942, it has been digitized by a japanese company.
It is one of its kind, a true documentary of an IJN sub during a war patrol, and they picked one that was also very successful which was also rare at the time : sinkings, night gun battle etc..
The things we'd need are the logs from the I-1 for instance...
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/ships/subs/I-1.html
but over 200,000 pages of the remaining code books, charts, manuals, the ship's log and other secret documents fall into Allied hands
http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-1.htm
where are those pages now ??
and those pictures taken by usn personnel inside the captured IJN submarines in 1945-1946. They must've been released to the public by now, as have the USN reports of the mission to japan in 1946, the original of the pictures seen in those microfilms must still exist somewhere.
Were I still living in the US, I would try and get access to those, but it's a bit harder from Belgium :( I asked a few times on this forum if someone from the US could do that for me, but that was to no avail...
I made the depth gauge seen in the above pictures as well as a couple dials taken from real IJN sub instruments sold on ebay last month. My problem is the dials don't show up ingame (dials1.dds) so until I find which ones are used on the german boats, it's no use changing them.

Have you seen the movie "Loreiel - the Witch of the Pacific" ? Some of the dials and equipment on that japanese boat is German, just like on uboats. That Submarine itself, is I-507.. the 500 class, larger then anything built before, and with 2 huge canons on the foredeck.. I wonder if this was a Japanese secret project for an even larger boat then the I400 class.
That movie is worth watching. (unfortunately its in japanese, and I have the danish, swedish, and norwegian subtitles.. anything but english :p )

As i have stated somewhere else :
It is the french submarine Surcouf - a cruiser type submarine - wishfully taken over by the german - hence the dials - and give to the japanese at the end of the war with a special weapon to prevent a third atomic bomb of being launched against the Empire of Japan.

To all the people in this development process, I give a massive thumbs up and continue to be amazed by the progress and the quality.
I was wondering when it would be felt this mod be on line ?
I don't want to clutter up this foreum with this question, but was unsure where it would be appropriate. It is not that I as disappointed with v1.5 as sold by the developer, but was dissappointed that I could not play the Japanese submarines. This mod would certainly fill that void.
You guys are doing great.
Smooth sailing and happy hunting.

Great work.
Thanks ! the view here above is just a tryout to see how it looks ingame, Peabody is doing the stand alone files as we speak.
This will give an edge to the campaign because one of those guns in the tub isn't gonna help you much... the range is only 6500 m. But in the campaign you will later be able to buy the better 25 mm type 98 single AA gun, then the typ 96 double 25 mm AA gun.

well Neon, just trying to be as accurate as we can mod ;)
Thanks to Peabody all those guns were implemented in game and are in version 3.9 of the Jyunsen B etc... mod , but we also have dedicated radars for our boats, and sonar, sub coatings and a couple weird gizmos they used as noisemakers (including a towed hydrophone that could play different sounds !)
The Jyunsen B mod version 3.9 (a few dev only versions from 3.4 to 3.9) is ready, but should only be released with the coming IJN Japanese Campaign that Peabody is polishing up.
gosh there's a lot to read when one is away for so long ;)
in the meantime I made a new damage model for the Jyunsen B sub, it's on my main FF page, just slip in the sub's directory (trial) :

What's the progress at this stage ?
EDIT:
Any hope for the Maya inclusion as surface campaign ?
The subs are ready, as are the guns but we have to check a texture problem (same ids we think) caused by some of the guns to ship turrets ?
I have done the remodelling of the Jyunsen B damage model (boxes and spheres) but haven't touched the sinking rate etc.. yet. They should be done in a week at the most.
I intend to include a new damage model for all subs, as for the campaign it's Peabody's say, I don't know how far we are from a beta, even if I have tested parts of the campaign for months now.
the "static" parts of the campaign are done (screens, medals thanks to captain scurvy and artists John Meeks and Michel Guyot) including the ranks and name mod by Takao (from whom we haven't heard in months)
Rubenand thejets is working on the voices, but that should come in a second beta ?
Peabody is polishing the campaign layers now, but I'll let him answer how far from a beta we are as those layers make the missions thus the game.

Well to answer the question: I don't know. I am not "polishing' up the Campaign, it very simply isn't done. There have been a lot of things both on the subs and in the Campaign to figure out and test and that takes time. Now that some of the gun problems are fixed, I can get back to working on the Campaign, so I hope it won't be long. (But I have said that before)
Writing the Campaign takes time but is not the big time consumer. Research and testing take forever. And finding mistakes either on the subs, guns or in the Campaign also take a lot of time for beginners like us. I am not trying to make excuses, I wanted this released a long time ago, but it didn't happen, but I am also a LOT closer than I was.
A tip for other beginners out there, sometimes finding a mistake can take a loooog time, sometimes it is just easier and faster to do start over. I made the wrong choice, and ended up having to do it over anyway.

Duplicate IDs can cause problems. Did you have this problem? We did find a duplicate ID on a gun, but it was not actually the gun but the Material node. We did not discover it until the gun was actually available to purchase to put on the sub, so it is a recent discovery.
If you do have a problem, let us know so we can check to see if it is the one that has been fixed and get a release to fix it for those of you that are Keltos subs in the German Campaign.

No its not on the your sub.
I was asking based on my messing with the twin 40 and trying to get it to work on the ms32 conning tower in 1.4. The gun will fire from the aft position but eventually it will cause a ctd as you get longer into the campaign with it. In the forward AA position, it ctds the first time you try and fire it manually.

a sphere and a box type=64 for the JB tub AA on the tower.
added spheres to the tower of the JB for the hangar and observation deck
added box 192=AttackCenter attack center for the obs deck of the tower.
added box 179=HangarDeck for the hangar of the JB.

I want to get the Jyunsen B new damage model ready for the campaign, as it was the sub that we originally planned to use, the others came later.
I have so far redone (place and size) the spheres for the Jyunsen B, and saved a copy of it, now I will re-do the boxes, then save that version, then do one with new damage boxes, and save that version, and see if they all work with no CTD with the 3.9 version of the Jyunsen B mod.
I sincerely hope so !
now we have collision spheres that exactly follow the ship's hull, then we should have boxes that do the same.
I still don't know why the engines are so easily destroyed and neither do I have a way to fix it (for now I hope)
@Regio sommergibile : I don't know, I watched the dc as they fell and exploded around the sub, the worst damage was done by those two dc that drop off the stern of the DD, when they are accurate i.e. hit the ship, they wreak havoc ! I still think that the engines are too weakly protected, I had to make a bigger box for the engine room to fit the sub, but that makes it a bigger target ! so we might have to find a way to tweak the armor on the engines..

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9454/ibdmjbv1b.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ibdmjbv1b.jpg)
I increased the number of spheres from 52 to 70 to fit the Jyunsen B like a glove, I then moved to the damage boxes and set them according to the 3D model I had made earlier from the JB blueprints.
No boxes were added, just moved and resized.
The tower has been done as well, there are now collision spheres on both scopes heads and the scope and the snorkel now have damage boxes too.
If you look here above, after one DC attack, both scopes are destroyed, the propeller shaft and bold launcher are damaged.
so is the dive plane transmission, erm ? destroyed ? what does that mean ??
I love it, especially without the CTD that plagued my earlier version :)
now to fine tuning, only the Jyunsen B, our workhorse, is done so far, others to follow.
At some point we might need a few testers, pm me or Peabody if you are interrested.

The I-47 seen here above is a C2, nearly identical to the C1, so we might make it available throughout the war, or make a C1, I don't know yet.
then we'll have to add a couple dummy tubes on deck for those Kaitens so they don't show inside the sub, if that can be done that is..

The C1 design was developed from the Type KD6. These carried no aircraft, but they did have fittings for carrying a midget submarine aft. This was later modified to accommodate a 46-foot daihatsu barge. Their eight torpedo tubes were all forward and were served via two separate torpedo rooms, one above the other.
These five boats carried the five midget submarines that were deployed to assist the attack on Pearl Harbor. All of the midgets were lost, and only one actually entered the harbor. It fired its two torpedoes at a seaplane tender and a destroyer, but hit neither, and was promptly sunk by the destroyer.
On 30 May 1942, I-16 and I-20 launched midgets outside the British naval base at Diego Suarez, Madegascar. A third midget, from I-18, failed to launch. The midget from I-20 damaged battleship HMS Ramillies with one of his torpedoes and sank a tanker with the other. Neither midget survived, although the crew of the midget from I-20 made it ashore, only to be shot and killed by British soldiers.
An attack on Sydney Harbor the very next evening achieved nothing, and the five midgets employed, including those from I-22 and I-24, were all lost. I-16, I-20, and I-24 were used to launch midgets off Guadalcanal on 7 November 1942, when the midget from I-20 damaged a transport, but again none of the midgets survived the attack. None of the C1 Type survived the war. Famed destroyer escort USS England sank I-16 northeast of the Solomons on 19 May 1944. I-18 was lost to destroyer USS Fletcher and an aircraft from cruiser USS Helena south of the Solomons on 11 February 1943. I-20 was an operational loss in the New Hebrides on 10 October 1943, while I-22 was lost operationally in the Solomons on 1 October, 1942. Patrol Craft PC-487 sank I-24 off Attu in the Aleutians 11 June, 1943.
The Type C2 was nearly identical to the Type C1. The biggest difference was that the Type C2 lacked fittings for carrying midget submarines. Seven further units of this type were canceled in 1942-1943 before construction began.

so given the similarities, there will be only one class of sub in the mod : the C1/C2, if you start before 1943 then it's a C1, if later, it's a C2. we could of course clone it to have both, but the characteristics are so similar that it would be a waste of space.

Just a quick throw together to see if it would work. It does, but all the equipment from the aft torp room is now in the engine room, so the damage model may be wrong and we may have to put the stern torp room back in or change DM. Needs testing.

Like I commented it was just a 'throw it together' thing to see if it would work. Still some issues to work out. Notice the engine room has two bulkheads, one is the stern torpedo room and the other is the engine room. Everything from the stern torpedo room (no tubes) is in the engine room. Like the bulkhead, propeller shafts, dive planes transmission, etc. So there will be some work to do, not hard just takes time. And the crew all need to be renumbered for the compartments.
Also just named them Upper and Lower because you said they were positioned that way, but that can be changed easily.

It is still a WIP but the subs are available in an older version. Two of them will not be in there, and you can sail them in the German Campaign.
Keltos01 could tell you which is the latest stable version, he has been doing work on the damage model and a couple new subs. This is his thread on the subs, you could ask there or just PM him.

the latest stable version is Jyunsen B mod v 3.4, it has all the submarines but for the Jyunsen C2 and Sen Toku, those will be "campaign treats". I think some of the IJN guns and stuff are already in that version, since we were adding one item at a time, the thing is, now that it's so close (the campaign that is) I didn't wanna release other versions (even though our working current is 3.9) because I feel the mod now deserves a full blown japanese campaign, especially with the last two boats and their 8 forward tubes :D, but as you see here above they're functionnal but not finished yet
I would advice you to add the IBDM v 1.3 (I-Boat Damage Mod) which will drastically improve gameplay.
If you wanna have asneak peak at the coming I-47 C2 class submarine, download the stand alone version, which, although complete and functionnal, has a few issues still, but I am now working on the C2 that is in the Jyunsen B 3.9.2 mod not the stand alone anymore.
but then again, you should visit my main FF page too, you never know what you will find ! ;) (I also made Bristish subs etc..)

A dream comes to life!!:)
Been waiting for something like this for MANY years...
First time in the submarine simulation world, Japanese submarines... a chance to command one of the finest and most diverse submarines of WWII, in the best WW2 simulation...

The idea of a japanese campagin is the best to come since they came up with the electric torpedo thinghie. :har:
Considering the shooting galery that is the American Campaign and the harder and harder shooting galery that is the German one, this might be the most nerve raking one yet. Sneaking past a whole fleet to deliver supplies to a besieged commander sounds very very "silent" :smug:. And taking out a heavily guarded battleship during a full blown Kamikaze attack... I'm drooling.

The version 3.9 of the Jyunsen B mod (submarines - german campaign) has been ready for a while now, but, although I have had bouts of "releasitis", I have resisted the urge to release it without the campaign on which Peabody is currently working.
This version should come with the campaign, or the next (4.0) which will include both Jyunsen C2 and Sen Toku as additional units.
I have already tested parts of the campaign and can't wait to play it either, but I want a full blown good campaign, so I wait...
As for the 2 new subs, I need to fix the doors on the Jyunsen C2 and make them for the Sen Toku, I hope to finish the C2 tonight.

The way I had designed the launcher was to be surface to surface. I didn't really think it would work well trying to attack an aircraft with it.
Do you have any clue as how to make such rockets ?
The ones the IJN had would fire straight in the air and explode at a set altitude, Carriers had them, so did theirs largest ships.
if there are air to ship rockets in FOTRS there should be ship to air rockets in the IJN Campaign Mod ;)
