Hi,

as you may know, Mikhayl posted his great 3D-model of the Type II torpedo room here for download:

It is still WIP, but he won't finish it.

The model itself appears to be very much advanced, with lots of little details, as you can judge from the screenshots in the download. It's basically only missing the textures and (as far as I can say) some minor modelling-work.


Is any 3D-modeler interested in finishing this promising work? It would be very great if someone did it, as this would enhance the simulation very much :-)

At first, it would be enough to only add the room, without crewmembers etc. being inside, as that would surely be very tricky to do...

I am really looking forward to your replies, as I am sure lots of people would be happy to have such a large, new compartment in their submarine :-)


(I would do it myself, but unfortunately, I have not much time for modding anymore, and have no experience in 3D-modeling...)

Unfortunately, I don't know how to upload them separately, but please take a look, they are absolutely stunning :-)

Hallo freunde, im Moment kann ich nicht auf den Filfront Ordner zugreifen,
aber so wie ich das verstanden habe gibt es hier das 3D-Modell das nicht Texturiert ist.
Ich bin schon zwar mitten in einem anderen Projekt aber das Interesse an den Torpedoraum
Ist sehr groß.
Falls sich noch kein interessant findet überlege ich, ob ich hier mitarbeite.
Vielleicht darf ich hier Daving Duck aufrufen mitzumachen, um die Problematik der Lichter im Torpedoraum zu lösen.
Allein deshalb weil ich unheimlich gerne mit diesen Mann zusammenarbeiten würde und wir uns dadurch viel zeit sparen.
Ich würde eventuell den Raum noch erweitern weil wir hier die grundlegendsten Elemente sehen und mehr Details einbringen.

I the area still would possibly extend because we the most fundamental saw here to see and more details bring in.

Tomi, I am not an eyecandy man. I value gameplay over fancy graphics any day. But to look through the open forward hatch into a fully detailed and quality torpedo room would be amazing! I would download that instantly!

I believe that the important things are necessary but what captures players' imaginations are the little additions. I remember when Reflections on the Water came out and we all were suddenly captivated by the game that was feeling old already. Suddenly we felt like we were playing a new game.

If you finish Mikhayl's engine room, you will have that kind of impact on U-Boats.

Ich glaube, daß die wichtigen Sachen notwendig sind, aber Phantasien welcher Sicherungen Spieler die kleinen Hinzufügung sind. Ich erinnere mich, an als Reflexionen auf dem Wasser herauskamen und alle wir plötzlich durch das Spiel fasziniert wurden, das bereits alt fühlte. Plötzlich glaubten wir, wie wir ein neues Spiel spielten.

Wenn Sie Raum Maschine Mikhayls beenden, haben Sie diese Art der Auswirkung auf U-Boote.

An event this awesome in the U-Boat field might even push the Fleet Boat guys to a new level. Would adding the torpedo room have any effect at all on game playability? Could frame rates suffer and the control response slow from that? Hopefully, since it is a mostly static room, the answer will be no.

But it really makes my blood race. I can't wait to see that installed in the working U-Boat. And it makes me really receptive to an engine room too.

I'm just the same, only from a different direction. I've preferred SH3 and SH4 over the older games because I like the eyecandy/feel of sailing through the harbors; it makes me feel like I'm really there. On the other hand, I've argued against having extra rooms just because I considered it a waste of time when there were so many other things that need doing, such as fixing the horribly misplaced home ports.

But, as with you, I see this and I start bouncing up and down in my chair and saying erudite things like "COOL!" "AWESOME!" and "WOWIEZOWIE!"

This is indeed pretty amazing stuff.

Hi,

I am really happy that this project is now in the hands of such a great modeller :-) I never dared to hope that it would advance that quickly when I posted the request, as Mikhayls model was around quite some time before... And now it's looking so great, I can't wait to "enter" the torpedo-room in the game :-)

why don't we get a partial mod going where you can go from the captain's cabin straight into this static room, via the open hatch and the "floating" mod (sorry if that's not what it is called!). It doesn't have to have any animation or even clever lighting or colouring or even proper 3d. It would be great to just be able to walk in there. That should motivate someone. :rock:

Just make sure that the top of the chain is the 0,0,0 position.
It will them swing with the motion of the Parent Unit.

Thank you, sorry to sound impatient but can I ask the delicate question of when the mod with the textures so beautifully rendered in the last few posts be ready?

I love the mod so much I have modified my Type 9 sub to now have the Type 2 interior that was unfinished by Mikhayl. It'll be great to have the rest!

I understand the job situation etc etc - my question was more out of sheer ignorance :88) . Is it silly to say that being able to see pictures like we have been seeing of rendered torpedoes, switches, lightboxes and even crewmens hair as they sleep mean that the mod is ready or does it still require futher hours of [insert correct word for computer magic] time still? What exactly is the process so we mere mortals can understand the huge process this is.:know:

As most Modders also have full time jobs and such?
I highly doubt that any date could be announced.
Tomi will do what he can do at his pace.
Others will do what they can at thier pace.
Once that pace is paced?
We'll all see the pace at which the pace proceeds.

DD can tell you the lighting stuff is harder then the 3D stuff.
And proper importation can be a long road also.
Just look at the open hatch stuff when first started.

I noticed that any in-game shots are with SH3. Is this actually going to work in both games? I hope there's as much excitement in SH3 land as there is here. This torpedo room is a huge improvement to the game (in addition to being an incredible nya-nya to those of us on the fleet boat end). Tomi you've done an amazing work here so far, the helpers have been great and I can't wait to see the finished project.

In spite of that, do it right and don't rush a 90% project to release. When you're happy with it, only then is it ready, no matter how impatient that makes some people. This makes me excited about owning my copy of SH4UBM.

Hi Mikhayl, I'm interested to hear why .uvw files don't work for you. I could improve my tutorial or maybe improve S3D (if bugged). Personally, I prefer .uvw over .obj because it's alot easier to use in Max and you have no loss of float-precision (although the main import file still is obj :(), but hey, good there's choice :up:

:up: Opinions: Looking great. Fantastic work ,Tomi. What about a bit more oil and grease around the place? I can remember from 'Das Boot' that torpedoes were covered in grease.
Never thought that this mod would be possible. And it is coming together so quickly. Very impressive. Thanks guys

I agree: Number 3 is best. Number 1 is too clean, number 2 is too rusty. The Chief would have those guys chipping and painting day and night if it looked like that.

Tomi, I wouldn't worry too much about these textures. The room is the stock type II room just reworked a bit, the uv-mapping and the white texture are the exact same as for the stock type II interior. Since SH3 release nobody felt the need to change it, that means it's quite good :) Besides, with the lightmaps you will barely see it. There's only 5 or 6 lights & all in the middle of the room so the room will be overall quite dark. I'm pretty sure the torpedoes will be almost black too since they're not directly exposed to any light source, same for the forward end of the room.

Tomi, the lightmap doesn't show in your ingame screenshots that's why it doesn't look so good. When you have the second channel done, you also need a texture for it, like this :

The "Common_Int_01.tga" in the material at index #3 is the name of the diffuse texture (1st channel) and "Gato_CR_LM1_LightMap.tga" is the name of the lightmap texture (2nd channel) attached to this material.
You need to pick a "selfillu" chunk in another dat, import it in your typeII interior.dat and attach it to a material. Then give it a name like "bulkhead_O01.tga" and place the lightmap texture rendered by 3dsmax in your data/textures/tnormal/tex/ folder.

and i Imported that all so .
I gave them the name mod_5 ( Like my TGA Picture Name by my TGA- FOLDER )
…. What effect has this in the TGA folder???

Yes that's right, the "auto unwrap" isn't always good. You can do it yourself using a simple uvw unwrap modifier, collapse it, and then in the "render to texture" menu choose "use existing channel" :up:

Yes. That way the lightmap will be same like the UV layout. That results a perfect match. I tried this out yesterday on my bed <---- (EDIT: my in game bed not the real one) and it was beautiful :yep:

It is possible for 3D Max on render with MentalRay ( Occlusion) and then to seve to- DDS File
However, a menu bar where I was the right thing DDS setting does not know?

I know that there is something with X3 or X5 (option can choose)
as what option you have dan ( render ) ?
and what is the best quality to do them ???? (I do not mean UVW) :hmm:

TGA works, but DDS is the way to go. Not only is the filesize smaller, DirectX can handle them in an optimized way, increasing loading times and reduced GFX memory.

While testing, go for TGA. When releasing to the public, simply convert them all to DDS and drop the TGA's. No need to alter anything (unless you use embedded textures) :up:

Not fully because detailed reference was somewhat lacking as well as limited 3D ability, but it should come close enough. For the overall layout of the room I used this blueprint : http://www.heiszwolf.com/subs/plans/plansTypeII.jpg
You can see the position of the beds in the middle, torps, the loading/escape hatch and a few details such as the batteries (hence the hatches on the floor) and that sort of things.
For the smaller details I only had 2 low-res pics of a real type II so I used mostly pictures of the Finnish Vesikko found on google images and here : http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/pictures/pictures_vesikko.htm
The torpedo tubes mechanism are only roughly reproduced and the pipes & electric cables are a mix of guessing + finding solutions that didn't cause me too much headaches.
Overall it should look pretty with a the right lighting, we'll see :hmm:




an idea: if more precise and detailed pictures of a type II torpedo room are needed, why not sending members of subsim there? we should have some finish guys here, who could visit the museum you mentioned above and make some more precise pictures... Also for other 3d projects, it should be possible to send some guys to local museums all over the world for taking pictures. i could make tons of pictures of u995 in laboe, near kiel (VIIC boat), for example.

Historically those walls were white in the torpedo room. Maybe add a bit of a "flaking" effect to the paint, and it would look really good.

That's what I was saying earlier, the bright white wall uses the same texture as the darker one visible on the left of the screenshot. The only difference is the lightmap, which is the really tricky part of SH4/SH3 interior modelling :)

The eternal problem of This SH4 game was always the lack of dynamic shadows because was not possible to implement this feature in this game by the UBISOFT developers due to lack of time ,I guess must be difficult to Tomi 099 to add shadows inside the submarine , even if I know , inside the sub are the so called static shadows , congratulations Well done Tomi :up:

But if you use the free cam, you could actually see there's ppl sleeping "out of sight". Tho, someone correct me, was that only the luxury in the officer's sleeping quarters?

Just a small query guys, in the control room for the Type 2 sub, the sonar operator when he reports contacts, turns to his LEFT when "talking to the skipper"

I imagine when this was designed, it was lifted directly from the VII or IX model, when the operator was on the opposite end of the compartment. Would it require a major rework for the sonar guy to turn his head to the RIGHT in line with the Type 2 control room?

Too much profit, or I should say "Lust" for it leads to greed and corruption which is why our economy here in the states is in the crapper right now!:cry: All kidding aside, and I'm not going to entertain a political arguement, you have a point. I know that if UBI didn't make a profit there would be no game. All I'm saying is that it's unfortunate that in order to turn a profit, there must be deadlines, and in turn not enough time to include every little thing. Thankfully we have a bunch of very talented people among us who are willing to use their spare time to transform this sim into a masterpiece!

Once it's all setup and done, it should be fairly easy to port to SH3. But give the man some time and let him finish a SH4 version first ;) I mean, this project just took off a couple of weeks or so ago. In all the years of SH3/SH4 this has never been attempted (and/or considered impossible), and now we already want him to release it for both games and all sub sections? :rotfl:

Keep in mind, it's a huge undertaking that he and the other participants are doing. The screenshots are very promising, but with the talent around, it's not nearly close of what's to come in the future of this game. I can assure you that. :yep: They have only just begun experimenting. Just give it some time, and keep encouraging them.

Nice job so far, guys! I'm proud of you! This is exactly why I love making S3D ;)

Well, there is another take on it, some of us can't run SHIV too great. Alas, I'm one of those people at the moment, with only a laptop (which runs SHIII solidly but struggles with SHIV). So there's at least some logic in that...

That said, would I mind if it was a mod SHIV only? Nope! All the more reason to look forward to a PC upgrade :p

Super! Stuff of dreams! Keep it up and hopefully one day we will have a total interior for each and every boat like this. It'd be great if more people joined this effort and helped produced more models as well...

which is missing to me still is a small vice with a who things bank like mechanical keys !!!:yep:

The beds were made somewhat brighter around the shedow efect to get out.
The area of illuminations works automatically.
I inserted all lights,

but me personal pleases the area completely without lights and somewhat more darker.

The lights into the area to remain switched off.
if you the lights fallen can click their it then in the S3D.





I will leave it probably darker.
It still another Variante to give with all lights are activated and the area,
how also the lighting will show the walls.
This should show however the Badroom.

so we mast test al options , for best option !!!

yeah, i am looking for new screenshots every day. the major work seems to be done, i think tomi is working on details now.

tomi, when a stable version is ready, you should release it. lots of players will betatest it and you can get lots of hints and information on how to make it best. what do you think?

oh, i still have a question: will the player be able to go in the room by using the free camera? or can you implement a cameraposition standing in the middle of the room and connect this camera to a key? for example the player could enter (and leave) the room by pressing shift t. this would be faster than "flying" into it by using the free view.

A dream comes true...i never thought, that such a mod is possible to create...thanks a lot for this immense work...i also think, thattthis mod will be the best and greatest mod ever! but i must ask something: will this mod also compatible with SH III, because i think that a lot people play this part also...

Seit SH III warte ich genau auf diesen Mod, einmal ein U-Boot komplett begehen zu können...du hast es geschafft! dafür danke ich dir von ganzem Herzen! Ja arbeit ist das eine ganze menge, aber wenn man jeden tag ein kleine wenig dazutut
, dann kommt das heraus.
Nun gut, ich glaube den gasten Lob gebührt Mikhayl, der das alles in Bewegung gebracht hat.

Ich möchte mich entschuldigen wenn ich nicht allen sofort geantwortet habe,
aber es ist die zeit die uns alle bremst, und das Leben das seinen Tribut fordert.

Ja ich würde gerne mit den Maschinenraum weitermachen, vielleicht hat jemand
Lust sich zu beteiligen, oder schon ein halbfertiges mod wo ich weitermachen kann.
Leider hat Mikhail hier nichts investiert.
Dummerweise habe ich auch keine Bilder von der II/B ( Maschinenraum )
um mich seelisch darauf vorzubereiten.

Haha, I would dispute that. I believe playboy-type material would have been 'verboten' on U-boats (especially if they were run by someone like Wolfgang Lüth). Conversely, U-boats usually kept a little library of books and there would be plenty of time to read. Submarines aren't party-houses and they are actually rather quiet - a lot of the men off watch would be obviously sleeping, and if it's quiet enough to sleep, it's quiet enough to read! And U-boat sailors were hand-picked and, I expect, not the dumbest of the bunch and therefore probably all very much literate men.

So I think a sailor reading a book is just the thing to have! Great job Tomi - although I think he looks kind of scary in that last picture :rotfl:

Hi, the book is perfect as it is... In "Das Boot" (The novel) L.G. Buchheim describes how Uboatmen spent their free time reading the books that were on board...

The book has a nice texture, looking like it was read by quite a few sailors already... So, this reading man is a great addition to the torpedo-room :up:
