:hmmm: This makes me think...
Do you intend to add flushing? Meaning water streaming out of the toilet.
If so, will you make it so that the water is streaming clockwise north of equator and counter-clockwise south of equator?

Okay, just kidding of course... :haha:

I didn't find any other pictures, except for this one. It is from U180, which - as we all know- was IXD1. So its loo is probably more spacious than the ones from other boats. And it seems to be a different model.

P.S. i have no scanner, so I had to take a photo.

Just for interest sake U-534 was commanded by KL Herbert Nollau, sunk 5.5.45 with DC's by a Liberator of 86 Sqdn piloted by WO J D Nicol, near Anholt Island. 3 crew were lost the Commander & 48 men survived.:DL

Yes it is such beautiful work going on here, that was why i am searching and asking my comrades who know of these things for any pictures to help. Yes they told me almost all of the crew of 534 survived, a few died of being in the water and one of a heart attack and the skipper sadly who was interned and released in 1946 i hear commited suicide..dont know for sure.

i will post more pics in a separate thread so as to not put too much in here. They have also found 3 U boats on the bottom of the Black Sea, 3 of the 6 that were sent there overland, 19, 20 and i think 23 including Gunther Prein's first boat :) i will try to get pics.

I can honestly say that since joining Subsim I've never flipped through EVERY single page of a thread.........until this one. Like a good book that you can't put down, I found I couldn't stop reading as I saw each picture of the mods progressing. Astounding work! My hat's off to all those with this type of skill. :salute:

I, for one, am definitely intrigued about the modelling software. What 3D modelling software would the experts suggest would be good for a complete novice to try?

Tomi, you have a knack for taking something that is "good enough" and showing that it is only the beginning of something a thousand times greater. You could end up with a virtual U-Boat that doesn't even need the game to be appreciated. Have you considered releasing it also as part of a stand-alone tourable U-Boat model? This is worthy of a commercial product, perhaps for a U-Boat museum somewhere!

Your mod, your way, sir. :salute: Don't yield to pressures to depart from your vision. And decide for yourself where and in what way it gets released. No matter what you do some will be happy and some won't. Make the decision on your own anyway. That's how things get done: by people with the courage to be found in the same room as a decision. Do it your way and make no apologies.

And maybe someone needs to be reminded that ALL subsim users AFAIK are welcome to visit all subsim forums.

That someone who is mostly interested in the PTO pays a visit to the ATO and choose to give credit to the work itself, and not a mod team, which by coincidence is going to use that work, is his choice.

Your reaction to his, well it speaks for itself...

The whole point about my gag pic was to point out that it's not some mod group that is the driving force behind bringing Tomi's engine room to life. Without the help and support of Skwasjer this mod would be not much more than a well-created and rendered model without sounds or animations. I will not stand by idly and watch a single modding group take the credit for a mod that they know darn good and well was the work of more than just one person.

My opinion only: this is no time to fight about credit for a mod that has not been published. At this point in development, there are probably ten mods that never see the light of day for each one that actually reaches completion. If this is one of the nine, then all the drama is about nothing.

If this is to be the one, then encouragement is what is needed here. Tomi has enough obstacles without prima donnas trying to inject conflict and accusation into the process too. As Tomi has already said, he is not enough to get the job done.

But Tomi is in charge of his mod. If he wants to go into partnership with the Russian Mafia to get the job done, that may be wrong, but to be wrong is his right. It is NOT our right to challenge him or belittle him for decisions he makes. Well, I suppose it is, but he has a right to ignore the psychobabble. This is 100% Tomi's mod, rights conferred by Mikhayl some months ago. If Tomi needs help, he has the right to ask. If Tomi wants it released as part of GWX4, he has the right to do that. If he wishes to make it a separate mod only after release of GWX4, he has that right. If he wishes to just quit to spite all the detractors, he has that right too.

What he's doing is difficult. It's never been done before. Why did he pick the Type II U-Boat when everyone knows that this work would better have been expended on a nice fleet boat? :D Who cares? Ever notice that lots of things, like running a four minute mile, are impossible? Then one person finally does it. Suddenly the impossible becomes routine and everybody is running 4 minute miles! This will happen here. You don't like this specific work? That isn't important. The techniques used here will make possible all kinds of projects unrelated to this one and will end up benefiting everyone in ways that cannot be imagined right now.

Unless negative people succeed in killing Tomi's will to complete his project, as Mikhayl was dissuaded from his projects earlier. Cannibalism has no place in a healthy forum.

It would have had a more positive effect to add Skwasjer's name to the GWX logo in your gag, than to remove the GWX logo. Skwasjer is to be commended for his contribution to this effort, he's been a bedrock of modding ideas. However, if I understand correctly, Tomi placed the GWX logo on his screens of his own free will, and he did not mean to exclude or dismiss Skwasjer's part in it.

My opinion only: this is no time to fight about credit for a mod that has not been published. At this point in development, there are probably ten mods that never see the light of day for each one that actually reaches completion. If this is one of the nine, then all the drama is about nothing.

Agreed. I think Tomi is doing us all a great service. Even if it doesnt go through, god forbid, then we all got to enjoy the anticipation of something on this scale. And it may and probably has kickstarted some modders on making things along these lines.
For those of us who are dedicated to the mod, we need to support Tomi in any way we can. Research, ideas, suggestions, moral support etc.
Either way, I am really looking forward to some more screens :D

PS I kind of want to build a diesel powerplant like that into my mud truck (79 K5 Blazer). Imagine the power :o

Weiter so Tomi, und nim dir deine Zeit. Kein Druck von uns und wir sind immer Hilfsbereit.

Seriously, the forum needs to be repaired, why is edit broken most of the time?

Are you using Firefox 2.something ? I couldn't youse the delete/edit functions as well when I used the old Firefox version. After upgrading to 3.x it's all running well.

"Upgraded FF"... the new location bar (address bar) is AWFUL. If I didn't find the plugin to make it act like an address bar I would have reinstalled FF2, or never used FF again. WTF were they thinking?

There is an add-on for FF called "Old Location Bar" that effectively fixes it, BTW.

First I'd like to say the work being done here is amazing! I'm a little late on some of the earlier questions regarding the diesel engines "overhead" or valves and injectors etc. I spent several years rebuilding multiple types of diesel engines. From the looks of the photos and the videos, these diesel engines didn't have an "injection pump" per se' but rather a constant pressure diesel pump that provided fuel to the injector rack (lower tube running the length of the over head) which fed the injectors. The center push-rod, when lifted by the camshaft, activates the "rocker arm" and depresses the injector plunger which during it's downstroke both creates the high injection pressure and triggers the injection of the fuel through the injector nozzle. Fuel that is not injected during this cycle exits the injector assembly and is collected in the diesel return line (the upper tube running the length of the overhead.) The other two rocker arm assemblies are for (1) the air intake and (2) engine exhaust. If you look closely, you'll notice a considerably different center (injector) rocker arm and also as some of the pictures show, a much longer range of adjustment for the center push rod. This particular configuration (plunger activated injector) is still in use today in many commercial Cummins Diesel engines.

Many of the earlier diesel engines (not positive but likely in submarines as well) were two stroke rather than four stroke engines. These early diesels were often equipped with turbo chargers and intercoolers, however from the photos, it isn't obvious if they existed on the U-boat engines. Some reading I've done suggests that the engines were made by Man Diesel. Hopefully this info is helpful.

The details of the rooms, that you have created, are so detailed...man, you make me crazy! I know that lot of people love your work an write down this in the forum here. I think we must do that!!! :yeah: !!! I think, that you are on the way to revolutionize the graphics of "a" subsimulation. Stay right on your way and let "other" publishers see, what is possible to create / to code... I could imagine, that after you have finished your incedible work, some of the "PC-magazines" will refer your achievement!

This would be nice for "UBISOFT" to read :woot: :haha: :woot:

Stay on your way! Your work is ingenious! :salute: !

Sorry Tomi I didnt read that it was only for SH4. I have not bought the Uboat addon for SH4 becuase, personally, I thought SH4 was horrible so why buy the addon. I am looking forward to the gWX team (or other modder) doing something with SH4.

I know most of us have upgraded our computers since SH4 was released but I was just wondering if the addition of all this wonderful moddeling impacts frame-rates in the game? Maybe somebody working on GWX4 can answer this? If in fact someone is working on GWX4, given that I haven't heard a peep from those people  That development is more secure than the Manhattan Project :ping:

Hi Tomi, your work amazes me every time I see this thread!, this work could be the render-ouput of technical drawings from a CAD program if you had the design papers for the engine, but you have builded this from scratch and aligning and resizing all the different parts of the submarines diesel-engine to match reality...

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see this one in Sh4 ! :salute:

As Tomi is still working on it still none of us have had the pleasure ( or pain ) or running it in game as yet
Be interested to see how it impacts myself
Not even sure Tomi has a version thats game ready yet - though I could be wrong there

i share your perspective. in my opinion it is one of the best things in life, if you fall in love to do something special...having a passion, having a hobby. i also now, how deep you can get lost in building models. early in my life there where the plastic models of planes, ships and other military vehicles. later i learned to love the possibilities of 3d modelling in games. creating some kind of virtual reality to revive some piece of history.

now its a shame i lost this hobby due to a lack of energy...and time. i forgot the energy it brings you, if you create those things. but my job lets me sit all day 9 hours in front of a pc, doing 2d and 3d graphics. in the evening, when i might have some time, i am simply to tired to get to "work". so it lead to a lot of unfinished mods...which i appreciate for.

so all i wanna say is, i am with you, bro and i have a lot of respect for your way to live a dream. and it makes me feel warm round my heart to see you finishing your greatest mod - the greatest mod, this game ever might have seen. the details of your work are simply stunning and the passion you do your masterpiece is unique.

keep it on.

:yeah:

No in my vocational career which I with car-maker make,
I have vocational develop, which however that is not called it satisfaction gives.
I had many Steps, begun as a model-maker construction for prototypes
- new developments, CNC and numerical control treatment,
like EDV/PC(Computer) administration also little Catia (CAD )experience.

Now seats I in planning Office and tarpaulin and plan and tarpaulin and tarpaulin…

This 3D-Max TypII Project brings reconciliation for me and brings me to Relaxed.
Quite I could do it me as a varied occupation Present,
because here so much interesting puts and because one itself Personally to develop can (Homerun),
and I am only at beginning.

It would interest me like much Ubisoft in such a project in money mast pay for this Project ?
I hope myself only UbiSoft decide to continue here!!
And it make a VIIC Project still better !! :yeah:

Lieber, dear Tomi!

Wenn ich mir deine Arbeit so anschaue und sehe, wieviel Mühe und Arbeit du investierst...dann kommen mir echt die Tränen...aber genug davon...

What i want is: Please, we should send a message to "Ubisoft" and explain them, that they could use the work of tomi for SH V. Maybe tomi get some money (he must get money!!!!!!!!!!). For me it is unbelievable, that "UBI" may not see our wishes: Everybody wants a subsim, that is realistic and the "TOP" is, the possibility to visit every compartment of the ("a") sub...Tomi is the greatest, we know this, but he may need support for his work (think to this: we may want every german sub...II, VIIb, VIIC, etc....). Maybe our general here :yeah:NEAL STEVENS:yeah: can talk with UBIsoft and show them the work of tomi. I think NEAL is an important and "punchy" person. May Ubisoft is impressed...i dont know...:06:
In our german forums "Aotd" and "marinesims", i think all want this....
Me should try this?!:yep:

Thanks to all of you!

I don't want to be a hardass here, but I think you need to move in the last two or three frames before the stern. what you've got them lined up on is the outer hull, not the pressure hull.

At least that's how my eyes see it.

There is a confusion , usually the radio room for type II is what we can see in the screenshot below, this screenshot dont agree with the real black/white photo we can see below , I guess the screenshot is actually the real situation of Type II

radio operator in the small radio room of a type ii u-boat

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/tonschk/radiooperatorinthesmallradioroomofa.jpg
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/tonschk/a4xf1.jpg

Hi,

I think these pictures show different stations: The first picture is the radio-room.
But the SH4-screenshot shows the hydrophone-station.... (The radio-room in SH4 is further to the back)

So I guess there would be no need to change them in SH4... (It would be interesting to compare the actual radio-room in the SH4-control-room with the photo, maybe there are differences there?)

All the best to you, and thanks for the interesting real photo :)

I don't want to be a hardass here, but I think you need to move in the last two or three frames before the stern. Second to that. I think the last 4 beams shall be moved closer to beds on places shown on the blueprint. And the wall with hatch shall be between the last two of them.

It might be. I dont know my way around diesels like I do around a car's engine, but I would say its some sort of breather or air cleaner. One question is why it would be inside the submarine? Because air cleaners and breathers are connected to the air intakes and they suck up a lot of air. Even if you were running the diesels on the surface with the vents open you would still be sucking a crap load of air out of the compartment. I think they would have run it to its own vent or something. Idunno it looks like its running to something anyway, but i can't see because the pic is cropped.

Auf jeden Fall, gute Arbeit Tomi! Sieht noch hammer aus!

If you have exactly the image look, the only one left from the others you see only the holes where he once were!

However, the originals had only one pressure relief valve, and pointed directly at the person to the next stand

Tomi,

You're a mod god! I can't believe this. This is incredible! :salute:

This was one of the things on my laundry list for SH5....increased in-sub immersion: Fully modded submarine and more complex crew interaction. Tomi's bringing that half-way there! Unfortunately, I don't think SH4 can support the other ideas...intelligent crew animations, animations of crew loading torpedos and conducting damage control, morale influenced by interaction with crew, etc.

Any chance of doing a type 7 or 9 in the future? I think the type 7 as a minimum. Its probably the most popular sub with the subsim crowd.

tater
03-15-09, 12:17 PM
sabretwo, I fear you are right. RR said it above in a different way, but Tomi's work is really "too good for SH4." Meaning that the game doesn't have the "hooks" to really use the new spaces, it's more like a stunning museum exhibit.

Gotta love the attention to detail, though, it's simply amazing work.

As for sleeping right behind the engines, I can't say; but I was a radioman on a destroyer off the coast of Vietnam, and our quarters were right next to the barbette of the aft twin-5" turret. There was more than one night when I drifted off to sleep to the sound of others shouting and those guns going off right above our quarters every fifteen seconds or so. It's not only possible to get used to the sounds, it's easy.

Mahl sehen was DD draus macht!!

Just imagine at the bottom flange is a way marker for the ride is always revolves around the axis, I think a nice little effect in the semi-light reddish brown.
And if it goes through the course you always hear the clatter of the floor plates
The never properly published and so, the diesel hammer.
We will see what makes DD abaut this effekts!

It looks to me like an oil filter. It is probably bolted directly onto the engine and the lubricating oil is pumped directly through it. Very much like the one that screws onto your car's engine, and I'm pretty sure that it is mounted to make its own connection. So it's probably perfect just like it is.

I'm willing to bet the airfilter is much like what Tomi has here. Old time filters were wire mesh on the outside with paper filament on the inside of the mesh. A lot of filters today are constructed the same way. One exception, there are housings around them as you see on cars, etc. The Torsk filters look like this but do have a housing with the end cap open about 5 or more inches that you can see the wire meshing and filament filter papers. These hook to the intake tube and finally meet the induction ports.

In the really poorly drawn red circles are the filters for the engines. They are exactly like Tomi's but are connected to a intake pipe as this engine was opposing cylinders and the intake was down the side of the engine were Tomi's is on the top. I would not do a thing with the filter Tomi. I'm guessing it hooked to a pipe off the intake and pulled air from the surrounding cabin.

Air filter/wire mesh:

http://tahaprincess.com/cart/image/air-filter.jpg

If anything, the engine would have a sump were filters like this were put into the pan. Mercedes were famous for that and I believe they still use this sump type filter today.

Mercedes oil filter that fits in the oil pan/sump:

http://www.geocities.com/mymercedesbenz420sel/images/1987_420sel_oem_and_bosch_oil_filter_01.jpg

Again, Tomi, I would leave your air filter alone. It gets the air from the open hatches and surrounding cabin air.
