this is looking so realistic we will be able to climb aboard and go to sea soon :) wonderful work!

Good counters to my answer above. An oil filter might look like that, but would certainly have a cover over it. Probably an air filter then. But, as pointed out by everyone, it probably is its own connection, and no hoses or anything should be added.

Incredible work, you're going to bring a new sense of life to the boat with this one. Any chance we'll see crew members in there?

Actually having a few pops and watching Das Boot right now, will follow up with a hop into Operation Monsun to cap off my U-Boat evening.

No, everything looks in proportion. I know the Torsk has hand wheels that are very large and others that are small. Really, all looks great! In fact, the two hand wheels you are talking about are very large on the Torsk. These wheels are about 200 pounds each. So, no, you hand wheel looks fine.

My poor computer drawing skills. I have circled this wheel on the Torsk. It is large like yours. In fact, I think you are dead on with your wheel size.

I think it is fine Tomi. Those large hand wheels are that large so one can turn the screw to whatever valve needs to be shut. The Torsk two wheels are probably 3 feet in diameter. No joke, they are about 200 pounds each. The picture you have here and what you did look fine.

Now run away before others break out their slide rules, compasses and micrometers checking sizes down to the micron. :o

But also in the original stock game, there is one white t-shirt texture, which could be very useful or suitable for the crew in "the sauna" (engine room).

In taking a look at these awesome renderings, one thing struck me.

If German submariners can actually sleep in those racks aft of the engine room, then they are better men than I. Having first hand, personal experience of what it is like to work in a submarine engine room I can tell you that the noise level inside the room while the engines are running is far beyond deafening. You can stand right next to someone and yell in their ear and they won't hear you. You can only communicate using hand signals.

The other factor is heat. It is not uncommon for the temps in the Engine Room to get above 110 degrees F. It actually get worse right after you secure the engines and submerge. The engines take time to cool down and with the boat closed up there is no where for the heat to go. Eventually the cooler water outside the hull will mitigate the heat somewhat, but the engine room is always HOT! The curtain separating the berthing area from the Engine Room would be nothing but an annoyance.

I have a lot of respect for the men who took these U-Boats to sea. Life aboard must have been most unpleasant.

The detail in these renderings is mind-boggling. Keep up the great work!

That is the motor room, very quiet normally. If manoeuvering the clunk of those chopper switches would be heard but that was all. There was a watertight door between there and the after crew accommodation in British boats, but I don't know about UBoats. Watertight doors were not normally shut unless under attack.RR

this is without a doubt top notch work, absolutely amazing.

i have a question that hopefully someone who knows about the engine can answer. in the photo of the real engine room (http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/tonschk/PVesikko-engine2.jpg) the camera is focused on what im guessing is the rocker assembly for each pistol (3 valves?) are the long rods closest to the camera the push rods and on the other end the valve return springs with the valve stems on the inside? it also looks like the springs are set in a triangle pattern. so is that all what i think it is?

Madox58
04-01-09, 08:22 PM
It's an inline 6 cylinder.
One Push Rod controlled the Air Starter System I believe.
Not sure what you mean by Triangular?
:hmmm:

Today We use Glow plugs to pre-heat the cylinders.
At first they were run over by air to get the heat to fire by the compression itself.

One Company I do work for has an old engine that has the Air Starter System.
That comtraption is bigger then my house!
I'd love to hear it start up.
But it's been laying in pieces for over 40 years.

Pvt. Public
04-01-09, 09:32 PM
cool i was right, thanks! and by triangular i was talking about how the valve springs in the photo the middle one appears to be offset more towards the fulcrum of the rockers, as opposed to the model where they are all inline. if you look at the photo and look at pistons 2&3 from the right you can see what it is im talking about.

the photo appears to be like this
F----S
F--S
F----S

while the model is all inline

F----S
F----S
F----S

but one more thing i noticed is that the 3d model seems to be missing some valve stems.

I would whole hearted agree with Privateer in this respect. The material available to Tomi for this engine room and a few good questions has brought Tomi to this point. Everything Tomi rendered in his mind and in the 3D virtual world are entirely plausible and very reasonable facsimile of a u-bout engine room. Not to mention the miles of wires and pipes inside a submarine that Tomi had to pull out of a picture in his mind and find the spot for it in the virtual world. For a first shot at a 3D room, Tomi nailed it lock, stock and barrell!

If they have another mod of the year 2009....this one gets my vote. Not because it is a new room for submarines but the sheer amount of effort, time and imagination spent on this mod by Tomi is just over the edge!:yep:

Absolutely it would be interesting a few pictures behind the machine where the pipes are large, :hmmm:
there should be a frame are of the Blue, the machine stability.
Well, and the things that you find interesting.

Perhaps some parts of the torpedo system; I mean the mechanics of the torpedo tube.

I do not know if it is the mod of the year 2009,
but it is still the VIIC,

and I believe it is our decision difficult.

.......................

The Vesikko U-boat in Helsinki opens 12th of May, if any detailed pictures are needed then anymore I'll be more than happy to get them, just let me know.

That would be a fantastic help and I would be very grateful to you
For the photos where you do not look,
I probably will be the model to my colleagues to pass this time
for an update but there should be enough.
Thank you for this wonderful offer.

I hope you have not misunderstood
I think a lot of pictures from the corners where no one else but look.
The best many, many pictures!

i would ditch the heavy uniforms in the engine rooms, those where hot areas when running. also add oil to the crew faces arms and sweat. crew member holding a tool as well would be good.

Hi,
Important things first, welcome to SubSim! May the U-boat fewer last long!:)

Trying to answer your questions:
1. It's a German Type II (rather small) U-boat.
2. You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along to get a certain answer, but as far as I know it is meant for SHIV but might be compatible with SHIII.

Best regards,
-SBJ

Tomi is possessed! He is a certifiable mad genius, the Dr Frankenstein and Dr Moreau of Silent Hunter! This is work of quality above and beyond Silent Hunter or any game: a museum quality U-Boat for your living room, bedroom or wherever your computer happens to be. It deserves a life outside the game, even so it can be properly appreciated.

Heck, it will be properly appreciated anyway, but the game will be ignored. As you marvel instead of submerge the destroyer will fill you full of 5" ordinance and you won't even care as you admire the charting table's detail on your way to a watery grave!

Any chance you might put together some type of tutorial to expand the cadre of designers that can produce your level of work? It could be written in your own language and translated to reduce the effort required of you. And it could start out very simple with separate modules to layer on development. It would be a wonderful addition to the sub sim modeling world, besides your glorious TypeII. I'm certain several of us would be willing to help with the organization, editing, translation, etc.

It's standard 3D work.
If you find tutorials to the Modeling software you work with?
You can do the samething.

Tomi has just dedicated himself to this certain work.
Much like IMBL did for his Merchant Mod.

Putting all this work in Game touches many other peoples talents.
There's where the real information needs documented
for future Modders.

I thought I replied to your last message but it is not here.
I meant making an easy tutorial for modding sub interiors.
All of the 3D graphics programs I have seen have poor tutorials. None of them (of course) focus on sub interiors. example: how do you create a sub interior starting with a 2 dimension plan?
A tutorial that started simple and built the steps one by one would be very useful and would enlarge the community of people working on sub graphics - that would benefit everyone. Of course, no one would be as creative, dedicated or as outstanding as you, but all additions would be useful.

That is a good idea
And for the SubSim provides enrichment, although I must say that some things even
for me is a mystery.

Only for me the work, and may soon be the father, and then probably even less
Time than now to have a little problem.

I think for the TYPE II Action, it is too late.

I will leave that answer open, as I prefer, I will discuss this with the father thought the interior VIIC
to expand.
9 months, I have the time VIIC to the build, then it will be difficult.

Perhaps you could so with the VIIC make a start, but now there is the question how much man go into detail as to include all compliance and to satisfy expectations.
Man all the more detailed the more time is everything.

And then there is the time that I had in the back are not pleased when I publish their secrets.
In order not to harm them, we will try to find an alternative.

I can only provide a good advice to all Modder give the best experience and able to acquire
Is it when one has prepared himself.
Unfortunately, all this with a lot of coffee and a lot of time, patience and a lot of reading in SubSim connected Forum.

Well, let’s Started!

-----------------------

Nun, last uns beginnen!!!

because we will then be VIIc also needed.

The biggest problem remains the details I brought more pictures of the mechanics detail needed. :hmmm:
The problem is that I have most common images of the front of the tube, but important is and detail shots from the side. :-?

I hope the pictures fromVesikko given more detail!

Excelent photos Sir Big Jugs (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=224244) .
Remember what I told you Tomi about the crew in the engine room , can you copy the frames from das boot when one puts oil on the engine , one starts the engine and the other checks the oil presure , take those movements from the movie animate them a bit and put the skins , it will be more easier for you then making the animations from zero. And another ideea do the same thing with the torpedo room make some animations with the crew loading a torpedo in the tube or one crew member firing a torpedo , or animations of the crew members opening the torpedo hatches from outside , you know from those levers like in das boot and use the sounds from there too

...the Higher the details resolution the higher the impact....

:yep: Just imagine the damage model! All those pipes and valves ... rupturing and spewing air, water and oil all over the place during a depth charging. And bolts flying around as the boat sinks deeper! The glass on gauges ... shattering into a hundred shards. Fumes from the batteries (er, wrong compartment?) ... maybe not.

Still, it'll be more than enough to shake up even the sturdiest skipper.

Hello! People!
I'm back here!

I had two days of heavy graphics problem when I Armared II with the new 3D vision of NVidia (3D glasses) has played my GForce 8800Ultra adopted. :o
Initially it card was overheating on the screen,:06: I hate a lot of small rectangles and graphics could not make more than 640 resolution. :wah:

And that was just the computer with the I U-boat building.
Short talk, it runs contrary I have solved the problem. :hmmm:
Did I also tasted two days.

LOOK THIS PICTURE !!

:hmmm:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8910/161nfg.jpg (http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=161nfg.jpg)

Furst Problem !!

I once had after the Bluprint presenting and working with different types of boat from Vesikko!

Gearshaft completely up to the wall Tollet, which means the boat at least a little longer than that on the Blueprint shown there is only half of the gear to be seen.

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/368/168z.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=168z.jpg)

In addition, the cover on the Bluprint absent (blue)

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/6407/169l.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=169l.jpg)

Second problem!

If the gear shaft in the middle of the cover is it looks like this!

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/892/166o.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=166o.jpg)

So the gears from the middle to bottom, and probably moved diagonally down to the boat screw around 15-30% its.
On en photos you can see whether the bad gearshaft Oblique is!
