Hm, as the screenshots look, I'm afraid that after playing this sub everything else in this game will look really superficial. Don't know if that's a good thing :hmmm:

afraid you might be right, all of us will be exchanging our Balaos, Gatos and the like for a lowly type II canoe

and we wont notice the merchs around us, will be lost in wathcing the valves go up and down on the engine room...

it will be so great!!!

Very nice work Tomi!
:yeah:
You inspired me to do a new ship.
It's not as hard a job,
but it's a new stretch for me.

@ Privateer

It's not as hard a job,

No, it is not a hard job, every day a little, and
At Once you have so much in front of you!

It is at least better than the economic crisis on the television to follow!
At Once you have so much in front of you!

If you want we can work together to decorate Torporoom, so we come closer to the VIIc.
Or do you have other ideas? ... Let us know!

but it's a new stretch for me.
In Russia have a pair of low-income and unemployed graphic designer and programmer
Sturmovik build , so up by these people, I bow, because they have made a fantastic WWII flight simulation.
That is brave, or? .. So do not fear, there's nothing you can not!

I mean, I'm a retired Eye Surgeon - and there are few people more compulsive than surgeon's working to 0.1 mm tolerances inside someone's eye (do you want anyone else doing that kind of stuff within your eye?) - but this is beyond belief. Tomi, do you have another life? Just amazing!

One example was a mod of a Taxable Italian submarine wanted to build, :hmmm:
or Mikhayl with his speedboat (S-Boot) as the interior part VIIc had begun.
What I also find it very interesting Asanovic the engine room of the S-Boat

sorry, for the honest words tomi:

but, im getting bored. is there finally something really new? i mean, you always post screens, which seem to be more or less the same, just in different angles (i know they are not all the same, as you add some small details all the time). no affront but, when do we see some ingame shots?

personally im not interested in a new little gauge in the compartment - it already looks fantastic. and now i am interested in seeing this come alive! understand? you should no longer invest time in this type II boats. they are only a very small part of the german uboat weapon. spend some energy on the VII C! the mother of all u-boats, dude. there is enough material, even an original boat in laboe.

I think to do a properly made mod like this take a lot of time for just one person working, we already have experience with the half baked games released by UBIUSOFT ,may be Tomi even want to add to this mod the realistic and properly working oil pressure gauges that react accordingly with the RPM of the engine and even more imortant the possibility to stop and reverse the left and right engines independently, I dont know if this feature is even possible

guys, you didnt get the point. the room IS ready. ok, its not perfect, as to the missing minor details, but who cares??? its almost perfect, already extremly detailed for my opinion and therefore ready to be finished.

so much work, for a u-boat type in which you cant get a hit already from 1940? no chance to survive in this little boat - beside the kaleuns who just want to patrol the shore areas. so please, why (except the high demand tomi has to succeed in building the most detailed compartment, that was ever build) spend more energy in adding details??? its simply over-engineering. senseless...

if this where compartments for the VII type, i would understand the time and energy, that was invested - you would see them ingame for a long period. i see clearly the future, guys. there´s gonna be a nice, fully suited type II and NO additional comp for the other boats for month/years. maybe never...as e.g. tomi would never invest as much time in a second project like this (8 month - unbelieveable). and there will be no other one, who will spend this time in it.

:shifty:

i really do not understand, why nobody else gets this point. tomi, please: finish it, leave it as it is. its far more than good, its almost perfect. this is enough. if there is some energy left, start to build the VII machine room, or torp comp.

Quite simple.

Tomi has not been declaring so far that he got the modeling finished. Okay, it's looking fine...
But anybody will tell you this man is THE perfectionist. He knows what working hard means, and constantly proves himself to be the man for the task.

There are still some minor corrections to make here and there but it stumbles on a part where the love for the detail lies.
Perhaps, therefore, repeated images from different perspectives.
If I do not leave all the good gods, I hope the very type II with GWX4 will appear.
Actually I should from now with the torpedo room to start, but no matter how fast I go on my runs the time like this, maybe I'm already exhausted.

Yes VIIC it should be where all the energy we want, but as expected me twice as much work as the TYPII.
I must say that I've been working with some of the TYPE II Kilo has been increasing.
That means I am one hours each day to do other sports can I get health dishonor apart from the few sleeping the last time I did.
None of this will hold us to build the VIIC.
For I wish you give me so much like her!

##########

LOL, patches for what? a missing gauge? you cant be serious...never heard such stupid argument. in fact: this is the most detailed, virtual u-boat compartment ever built since. and if there is a little gauge or pipe missing, is absolutely not comprehensible for any of us, as the degree of details is already extremly high!

:88)

I actually agree funny enough with urfisch.

What TOMI is building is a uboat engine simulator. 99% of the game is about torpedoing enemy vessels, its not about oiling an engine. The subsim community will not spend (I guarantee you) more than a 10 minutes in the engine room during the whole life of a mission.

I'm not asking TOMI to stop his work, but to be useful to most of the subsim community one must know when to stop and save the balance of the engine room work for a new release later on down the track.

At this rate, there will be a SH5, everyone will have moved on and no one will be playing TOMI's mod.

tonschk

Yes, but all of these variants have its effect.
I will give you fairly, effects are very important to add a noise in the game (simulation) (communicating illusion type).
We will also add some effects to the mood for some situations to increase
I'm curious myself whether we succeed.

UBISOFT, I do not understand why it is reluctant to produce a SH5, I do not believe that their effects are expected.
I think the illusion that they lost and ideas.

Because the money can not be, because UBISOFT have more than ever.
One thing is certain UBISOFT, the submarine simulation like Microsoft Flight Simulation for the claim.

But it's not enough just a stone-mail this to set and then wait for what happens.

Because if the rumors are true that UBISOFT a U-boat sim of the Cold War makes

Has confirmed my suspicion that there is only one stone is mail.
Because of such things by halves, I believe nothing will be out.:hmmm:

I've heard that the UBISOFT Submarine Sim Microsoft will have sold.

"New BETTER graphics" and "UNIQUE special effects" is nowadays the best advertising for new games - unfortunately, the producers did not understand that there's more...
SH5? why not? ... but only with the patch 1.4.
:damn:
I completely agree, Antar.

I have conversed with people who still get their Pacific kicks from SH1, and for u-boats insist that Aces Of The Deep is still the best.

Tomi will do what modders do, which is make what they want to see. If people like it, great! If not, well, all the taunting and complaining in the world won't change what they do.

I've been working on a set of rules for a WW1 naval tabletop game for more than 10 years. I once asked a friend why I put so much effort into something that will most likely never be finished, let alone published, and he smiled and said "Because you have to."

if the game is 99% shooting stuuf why do we care if the room takes a bit?

we played and loved GWX 1-3 without an engine room.

Stating the realism level is acceptable and that the development of this project is coming to an end is up to him, definitely. :yep:

NO!!! We should all vote. Somebody crank up the meaningless poll engine so Tomi can laugh at the results! We can have four or five irrelevant options, along with "it's finished." It would be GREAT entertainment.:D

Do you think can be a problem to check the status of the Ampere Gauge with this pipe very close in front of the Ampere gauges ?

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/tonschk/58a.jpg

Highbury
07-09-09, 02:33 PM
I think that to an actual person standing in the sub that pipe would be chest height or so. You would be looking down at it and therefore seeing behind it quite easily.

I can't say with any level of certainty, but if that is where the pipe sits in the real sub, then of course it is where it should be in the mod.

Fair enough, but what class sub are your pictures taken from? You clearly see a little writing desk to the left of the panel in your pictures, where as in Tomi's model, there is an engine there ;) It looks like a different sub to me.

I see your point that from a design perspective they should not be obstructed. My point is that, if they were obstructed in the Type II then it should be obstructed in game, no matter how stupid of a design it may have been.

That pipe is not next to the three lower Ampere gauges in the Vesikko ,yes there is the upper pipe but the lower pipe is not there covering the three lower Ampere gauges ,

There is just one pipe closer to the three top ampere gauges , the lower pipe next to the three lower Ampere gauges does not exist

I think it's a shame the only thing you're from Romania on SubSim forum posts for me.

One could almost assume that you are an employee of UBISOFT are.:hmmm:

This simulation is very well known in Romania and there are also forums which offer interesting mods. :06:

Man might think we are the only ones here! :D
How do you think about it?:arrgh!:

Hey Tomi, sorry to be a little late to that discussion.

Your work is the best example of what a modder can hope to achieve. I know a bit of 3d graphics myself, mostly organic modeling. Modeling might sound almost mystical to most gamers but I know it's quite simple. However, going thorugh hundreds of pictures and working with thousands of objects is anything but simple. Any dev team, not just Ubi's would be put to shame by your patience. I would never have such patience .

By your comment, did you mean that UBI never contacted you? If I were on the managment team, I would've payed you for your superior model and saved my team from months of work. I hope they didn't think "well, let's make a simple 3d room for SH5, they'll manage to integrate Tomi's interiors later anyway".

Although there are few of us romanians here on the forum, not all of us work at Ubi, or would like to work at Ubi. I don't have any info on the team, but many of my university colleagues worked as game testers there (at Gameloft to be more precise), about 5-6 years ago. The hours were long and the pay sucked. Much more recently, EA Romania fired it's entire Game Tester team. I had a friend there who worked for 9-10 hours per day and was payed less than 200 euros per month. I don't want to start a political debate here, but in a developing country with failing moral values, foreign corporatins here don't bring anything good, they just take and leave. Although I've finished the Computer and Automatics Unviersity I've decided to join the merchant navy (not the romanian one as it no longer exists). The lifestyle might be strange, but the pay and respect are better than anything I can hope to recieve here (through legal and moral methods).

Silent Hunter is not well known in Romania. When it appeared a few years ago, there was a local hype of "OMG, romanians can do a game?! OMG, and it's not a crap game? WOW". But the game didn't sell here (and not only from piracy). Most romanians play CounterStrike, World of Warcraft and Command and Conquer. But since one game here costs about 80 euros, and any teenager that gets a job can't expect to get more than 300 euros (while their parents might earn around 500), you can bet that they'll invest 2000 euros in a computer but never buy a game. That's how things work here. They download about one pirated game per day, play it for 20 minutes, then delete it and go back to Warcraft. Piracy is here to stay, if they crack down on it, all the IT vendors will suffer from loss of sales. And recently they just did, because of game consoles. Most of my friends now have switched to XBOX (XBOX has been cracked for years) because they hate upgrading their PC's every year. The fact that I have more than 30 original games (all sims or final fantasy games) with boxes on my shelf makes me a rarity among my friends and is because I've been playing games since 1990 and have witnessed the glory of pc gaming, back when each game was unique, the rise of the simulators and the fall of sim giants like Microprose and Looking Glass. Flight Unlimited 2 will always be my favourite sim, no matter what the future comes up with.

@karamazovnew

People thet everything what our friendly karamazovnew here says is true.

It is tragic and cannot find words, it makes me more thoughtful.

Each discuses that I would open up, would be to one fiasco and
we are powerless.

I have to leave Bosnia in 1990 then I heard about this saw
Romania and I have noticed that until today has not changed very much.

It is a tragedy, and whether the EU is a light for the Romanian folk or
a slap in the face, we'll see.

This report, therefore I am very impressed with the response took a little longer.

I thank you karamazovnew.

wowowow, just a sec there, I never blamed the EU. Corporations are corporations and they do what they do. And governments will always suffer from corruption, especially the romanian one (check out the latest voting presence percentages to see how much we "trust" them). And in any country, some have it better than others. I have a good Pc, a nice apartment and a beautiful car (Toyota Corolla Hatchback 2006, british made, bought new). I don't yet live in a kraphole. The EU is a light that too many Romanians have tainted with what they do and how they behave. Our government deserves as many slaps in the face from EU as I'd like to give them (altough I'd prefere to kick them in the balls, or medieval torture).

So chin up

Now back to topic.
With SH5 now such a big issue and the GWX 4 mod abandoned, I realise that Tomi's interiors come to my mind again and again. With no doubt, they are a true masterpiece as they are now, but we must think about the future.

So, once SH5 will come out, I wonder, how much of the GPU will the Ubi interiors take up... We'll see then. But think about it, every time anyone would want to add something to the SH5 3d interior, where would he look first? At Tomi ofc. I already regard them as a sort of template. The positioning, the textures, the detail, they're all perfect. Maybe in a few years we'll have the hardware to run all of it with dynamic lights and Ambient Occusion. Tomi, can you make up a render without baked textures? Maybe with Ambient Lighting and Global Illumination and full quality settings. I'd love to see how it looks. :yeah:

That is if it ever gets released.
And if that's in GWX's hands, having a new SH title coming soon, I bet they're not gonna want to waste their time, specially given the fiasco that SH4 was compared to SH3, the only really good things SH4 has are time compression, graphics, and the US subs. So it'd be logical to drop any works on SH4 as it's already been said that GWX4 has been dropped.

I think only a miracle will provide us with such complex materials for SH4 now.

Luckily enough, there's already some good mods on the scene, so the SH4 fiasco isn't so much, now that it ain't a standalone, but a title that gets some good works released on the short-scheduling schemes that have always represented the smaller packs. It's not like I've done as many hours in SH4 as I did in SH3, but I can say there's some stuff that's worth trying.

So, a "Good job!" to all those modders, please.

Cheers

Holy obsession, Batman! Tomi, is this in-game video, or with another renderer? If that's in-game, there goes all the speculation that your attention to detail would crash or cripple the game! That looked downright smooth. Congratulations on a fabulous job there! I look forward to playing with it installed in my Op Monsun submarine. Who knows? Maybe even GWX4 will make a comeback!

Will parts of the enging become animated ?
Will this awesome work be implemented in a mod, now that GWX4 is history ?

Unfortunately, it's just a movie, and no evidence of speculation.

I would love it if we last for the model so far.
There will be a while until it's ready.

We want to publish it but
not before Silent Hunter 5th
Simply out of respect for Ubisoft and the diligent Romanian employees
The secret of her were still at Surprise us.

I truly appreciate this project has captured the UBISOFT,
The biggest success and my experience and the Ubisoft Developper Tiem here.

Therefore, I would like nothing decide where, when, if at.
I think all of these projects will get something
but at first under - UBISOFT-Silent Hunter 5 –
and then 4 and 3.

At least from 2010 to sink any submarines, some vessels.
It is certainly exciting.

– UBISOFT- Silent Hunter 5 –
und dann 4 und 3 .

Zumindest werden ab 2010 alle U-Boote einige Schiffe versenken.
Es wird bestimmt spannend.

Thank YOU !! :salute:

I think Uber Gruber has felt very nice after it in words.
What has been achieved, unfortunately, not much, and what
One of the effects would add to the rattling chains.

Sun is also missing in the Torpedoroom deserved entertainment, whom the camera (or the person)
Moves through the room, climb down the metal ladder with the Germans Feldstifel
(Combat boots) and enter the premises through the clatter of the metal floor plates.

In addition, I noticed when the submarine gets a certain inclination, they are also a part
the curtains swinging well, the are made of cloth,

are also swing the cloth, and that my friends is a terrific effect.

Now these are the saw that I would like to implement yet.

----------------

http://img203.imageshack.us/i/zylfiretypii.jpg/i think it depends on the cylinders...
like if it was 6 Cylinders,
1.the two at the end would fire...
2.then the two in the middle.
3.and then the two right next to each other

.......|_| |_| |_| |_|

2.....|_|.........|_|

3...........|_| |_|
...|_| |_|..........|_| |_|

please excuse me, that took a bit of work... but when i hear Uboat engines, i get a distinct 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3 sound...so that makes me believe thats how they work.

Hi Tomi,

Hi Tomi,
I don't think that there were three valves for each cylinder. The left valve is entrance (air), the right valve is for exhaust and in the middle is something like a control valve (diesel injection) or, based on the location at the cylinder head, a mechanic for (spark) ignition.
For that I truly believe the sequence of the outer valves is the same as in the youtube clips...

Hey Tomi,

the animation looks good so far, but if you keep that cycle in real it would propably kill the cylinder head.
Now I have a technical reference myself to give a helping hand... here is a diagram for your four strokes:

The three pusher (Stößel) are for
1) Einlassventil (Intake valve)
2) Rollenabhebenocken (Interrupter or Timimg Cam)
3) Auslassventil (Exhaust valve)

............ 1.T. 2.T. 3.T. 4.T.
1 Valve (L): ---ö|os--|----|----
2 Valve (M): ----|----|----|----
3 Valve (R): ----|----|----|öoob

............ u o |u o |u o |u o
piston.....: _/-\ _/-\ _/-\ _/-\

The legend for the valves:
ö = is opening
o = is full open
s = is closing
b = right at the beginning of the movement to lower cylinder position the valve is almost closed

As you can see, the middle "valve" wasn't used for a combustion of the cylinder. It was a mechanic to be able to let the engine rotate reverse.
The lower crankshaft was rotated several degrees to change the engines timing when operating reverse.

I have the schematick shown above in Excel.
Is it possible that you show me the way as above.
So I can see well the position of the plunger.

What is important for the simulation.

Do you think that some of the engine vibration at full throttle
Was suspended.

And the angle of the plunger up and down the roof, which is ok?

Greeting Tomi.

All changes will be accepted by Diving Duck
and revised.
I hope he makes a feedback here!

Hi Tomi,

Link: http://rapidshare.com/files/305918727/MWM_RS127s_Steuerzeiten.xls.html

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have an update for the engine and its timing. The middle push rod moves the starting valve, which is used to start the engine with pressurized air. As soon as the engine is firing itself the starting valve isn't moved by the camshaft any longer and the middle push rod and rocker stand still.

The uploaded excel file contains the timing for all six cylinders of the port and starboard engine. The values of the cells are in millimeters and symbols the stoke of the push rods.

Tomi, are you totally crazy???? I know you´re intent on the details. But let me link the animation´s speed to the engine´s speed first, before we talk about any rythm. LOL. Besides nobody will ever recognize whether the sequence is correct or not. Most important thing ... it will move. You make me go bald!

At the moment I´ve got a set of moving parts imported into a separate *.dat file. Nothing more until now. I´m going to do some tests on linking it to different speeds. That´s the actual state of progress from my side.

Hauptsache da zappelt was. LOL. Wegen Dir bekomme ich noch ´ne Glatze. ;)

DD

Moin,

as said above, the sequence does not bother me at the present stage of development. Most important for me was to link different speeds of animation to different speed settings.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x241/DivingDuck/SHIII/engine_002.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gTNUic89-o)

Meanwhile I´ve been able to link engine animation speed to engine order telegraph settings. This is a short preview. It is still buggy, but it works. The animation does not show correctly in this video, because of the frame rate. The scene has been captured at 60FPS (FRAPS does not support higher FPS) and been converted to 30FPS to match YouTube requirements. You should see the valves blurred at high speeds. ;)

DD

Hi Tomi,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

as I mentioned in my next to last post, the middle push rod moves during engine start only. It's used to inhibit compression inside a cylinder when the piston is going up during the 2nd stroke. So the engine can get revved up. When combustion starts after few rounds of the motor, the middle push rod is decoupled from the camshaft and so the decompression mechanic isn't moving any longer.
If we can control animations in SH4/5 in a way to differentiate between starting the engine and normal run then I'll do the moving for the decompression mechanic too.
