You need some form of photo editor that allows you to add film grain etc. Simplest way to get into it is to download Picassa from Google which is free and one of the easiest photo library systems I've seen. It comes with a really easy to use editing suite which allows you to get rid of red eye, change tints, add film grain etc etc etc.

Have a play and see what results. Once you are happy have a go at posting it and see what everyone else thinks.;)

BTW I'll be posting some of my B&W shots when I get home from work.

The Navigation Officer had been studying optical physics at Gottingen university before being called up one year into his studies. He managed to improvise a high power telephoto lens with a spare pair of binoculars and his cheap and nasty kodak camera.

The name of the ship was airbrushed out for reasons of sensitivity. There were no survivors due to the cold waters north of Shetland in February.

This was on the U-boat's third war patrol, early 1940.

HMS Hotpot was sunk yesterday, (Essex class carrier loaned by our American cousins). Apparently by multiple torpedos. Remaining destroyers in task group gave chase to an intermitant sonar contact. RAF Mosquito's also called in. Captain of the HMS White Pudding reports contact moving at 17 knots. Contact lost, assume Seaman Stains was operating ASDIC. 17 knots very disturbing, no explanation. Good friend of mine Dennis Parker has contacts with SOE, he claims to have some intelligence from Norway which might explain this.

Photo was taken by Norwegian Resistance member ****** ********** codename Pelican, covering as deck hand on a herring trawler.

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/3061/typexxiiieb8.jpg

Photo was taken near ******** Fjord. Pelican has cultivated contacts with German dock workers. They reveal it to be a new, ultra fast, short rang U-boat known to the Germans as a Type XXIII. Pelican also reports having seen an even lager U-boat of similar hull configuration. Reputed underwater speed of around 17 knots. (No images of larger U-boat available at this time). Larger U-boat known to Germans as Type XXI. Could this explain HMS Hotpot's sinking?

Ok ok, few more. :p All from WaW I or II.

April 10th 1940, U-27 returns from her 3rd patrol. Notice the deformed stern caused by a British destroyer which rammed the boat during the patrol. The destroyer wasnt the only threat they encountered out there. RAF harrassed the boat and it´s crew with deadly hit and run attacks. The attacks cost the life of Bootsmann Herbert Kriegel.

It is rumoured that captain of the boat, Kpt.Ltn. Adolf Bummer II declined to attend the welcoming party and that he ordered his crew to do so also. When later asked why, he said "Is it right that we go and party, when he (Kriegel) lies in the coffin waiting to be layed to his final rest?".

This was by far the most succesfull patrol of U-27, she sunk 9 enemy vessels for estimated 30,000grt and shot down a British Swordfish type aircraft.

http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/1898/u27p3arrivekielma9.jpg

ALAAARM!!! Taken through the periscope of U-27 as it was attacking a convoy in AN14. Two ships were sunk and after 1½ hours chase the DD´s forced the uboat to surface. No signs of surrender were seen so the DD´s opened fire and sank the uboat. 4 survivors were picked from the sea. Prior to this U-27 had participated in 4 patrols and had sunk 20 ships worth over 65,000grt.

I fiddled around Brag but just couldn't get it to look like an old photo, but after using a gradient filter to add Sepia color then added film grain also blured and removed moire the picture was too dark so I adjusted the brightness and got the following result that looks a little like a painting, I called it "Grey Wolf after a kill 1942":

Rofl @ Jim :rotfl:

But here's an easy way to make the old style effect with photoshop CS3.

Make it black & white
Filter->Add noise I use ~5 for an 1280x1024 pic
Filter->blur->Lens Blur

Done.

Also, you can get quite nice colored pic if after doing the above, you copy the original layer (you duplicated the original layer and made the duplicate layer your old pic, right? :) ) and move it above the old pic layer, then just change the blending options to 'Color'.

The trick to making these photo's look realistic lies with removing enough visual data to hide things such as aliasing and imperfect textures, while leaving enough visual clues to convince the viewer that the image's subject is in fact real. It really is an art rather than a science, despite the integration of technology required to achieve the effect.

Go for contrast. Common black and white film from the 30's and 40's often captured more contrast than detail. Large areas of highlight and dark will appear more convincing than big sections of gray with lots of detail. (dark hull against an almost white sky and a light gray sea)

Go easy on the blurring. Use just enough to hide the jaggies, but assume the photographer was reasonably proficient. I find Photoshop's "lens blur" filter the most convincing.

Depth of field is hard to simulate but can make screenies convincingly real. Once again though, don't over do it. I won't go into the details about the how or why here, but experienced photographers and Photoshoppers will understand what I mean.

This image is a repost and done quickly, but it illustrates my points:
