U-35 searches for survivors amidst the wreckage of a rather volatile Passenger/Cargo, shortly before this shot was taken a large explosion had damaged the front of the boat. Fortunately the damage was light and easily repaired. Survivors from the Passenger/Cargo were rounded up and placed on life-rafts, given food, drink, a map and a compass as well as directions on the nearest landing point (Scotland). When clear of the wreck, U-35 then radioed openly about the sinking and dived swiftly to avoid any radio counter-detection.

What are those funny balloons though? I have seen them in my home port of Wilhelmshaven aswell.
They're called 'Barrage Balloons'. The idea is that low-flying enemy planes will wreck themselves on the wires. They were scattered all over cities and ports during the war, with extra wires strung between them.

I don't want to disagree with such experts as TarJak and jimbuna, but I think that photo looks just a little...I don't know, 'posed' maybe? They don't look ready for combat to me; just trying to look mean.

Next time have them actually train the gun, that way they'll look more natural. Or else hire some actors.

Portuguese P-38 Lighting, photographed over the Atlantic in Sept, -41.
Uh-oh. The first P-38s in service were with the USAAF in Alaska at the end of May 1942. The first ones in Europe began operations in July.

Two P-38s of the First Fighter Group had been forced to land at Lisbon, Portugal while being ferried from England to Algeria. The Portuguese government obtained American permission to retain these planes and assigned them the serial numbers 300 and 301.
No dates given, but certainly not before late 1942.

An ACE of the water :hmm:I've just finished reading U-Boat Killer by the skipper of the Hesperus Capt. Donald Macintyre who was credited with teh capture of "Silent" Otto Kretchsmer. I'd say looking at his record he was an Ace and used "Johnny" Walkers' creeping attack to great effect on a number of times.

I recommend the book as it has some excellent descriptions of both U-boat and escort tactics during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Hey Tarjak, how did you manage to get "this view" within the game as if you're actually on the ship? Is there a camera mod or something that lets you do it? Or are there some camera controls I don't yet know about? :S

@coronas Veilen Danke! That's precisely they look I was after. BTW another great shot from you.

@ddiplock I don't use any camera mods and I just use the "<" or ">" external camera and then use the arrow and numpad keys to move around into position. It helps if you pause the game when you are moving the camera position then you just need to think a bit about the composition of the shot, Just like in RL photography. The key is having another ship inside the external camera radius of the ship you select with "<" or ">".

I stumbled on this method by accident a while back and played around with what you can do with the camera position using the stock standard controls and it is quite surprising what you can do. Have a look through some of the earlier shot's posted here and you'll see that in at least one ship you can get inside the bridge to take shots out the window.

The only additional editing in this shot was to add a light source and a scratched dust overlay in Photoshop to age the shot.

Thank you, it was a great tour indeed... snuck in between Elco boats and luckily jumped over the subnet in the small NY entrance when ramming it... I marked the position, and went over it at 9m over keel... the only destroyer in port at that time had laid anchor, and got struck by a torpedo ;)

Note to self: next time go to NY using Real Navigation mod :|\\
