GWX3.0 has the OLC environmental mod incorporated in it....this has been a definite improvement IMHO.

Yes.....the ones on the other thread are screenshots and those on here have been adapted to give the impression they were taken during the wartime period, hence the 'realistic' tag on the thread title.
Would you like to see a dozen or more variants giving the impression they were taken during various periods during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries?

Here's something that I've been thinking about for a while now, but only got around to taking a stab at tonight:

The sky's one of my own photos, the skin one of Fubar's, and yeah, I was going for that book-caption look. Hopefully that caption is accurate... hehe... pieced together and ad libbed from Lawrence Paterson's Dönitz's Last Gamble: The Inshore U-Boat Campaign, 1944-1945. White lettering on black-back just so it's not so jarring against Subsim grey.
And a thumbnail of the image sans caption for those interested:

It just occurred to me that the Unknown Sailor/Grunt/Airman has always been a pretty active photographer with a good eye, a keen knack for squeezing himself into awkward spaces, and astonishing timing. Bernard's graceful brother, perhaps?
Hopefully that caption is accurate...

Excellent point! I find it interesting when a caption contradicts information in the paragraphs around it, nevermind sometimes relatively common knowledge. It might even be two sentences and the simple matter of a number--say, "three chickens" in one, and then "four chickens" in the next. There was a particular novel that I couldn't get through because of a simple typing error like that. It just stopped me dead in my tracks; reading the same scene over and over again to see if I missed something, all for naught until I finally tired of the story all together.
Frustrating if you're researching beyond the casual, but other times, you just have to grin when they make you say "So, which is it, then?" :DL

I have the collected book editions of Signal magazine, the German equivalent to Life. One photograph is labelled as "A British Havock bomber which crash-landed." The plane in the photo is unmistakeably a P-38 Lightning.

I have yet to see a blimp in this game. I presume you're patrolling somewhere in American waters. Any spots that you're more likely than others to run into one?

They patrol up and down the coast....it's pure chance coming across one in a campaign.
If you read up on their bases in RL then you may find interesting intel about where to find them more frequently. I've only ever seen two in a campaign game.

All the shots look great, but this one looks the most like an actual old photo. What did you do?
Thanks I'm glad you like it. I look to position the camera where a photographer would be then compose the shot in a similar way and reel off a few screen captures. Editing in both Picasa and Photoshop I remove the colour, add some film grain then add things like blur for depth of field effects and light sources for the lighting and shadows. I normally darken the shadows quite a bit as old films normally had very strong blacks. Lastly I add a border using the canvas size menu in PS to give it the white border.
Basically I mess around with the images until I'm happy with the result sometimes I get lucky and it looks almost real.

After Prien's success in Scapa a few days earlier we received intelligence that the home fleet had scattered in an attempt to disperse the fleet. We had just arrived to our planned hunting grounds in the Irish Sea, just south of the Firth of Clyde and had nearly 24 hours go by before seeing a measly tugboat.
Wondering what the heck was going on herr kaleun ordered us to proceed slowly up the Firth of Clyde hoping that we might run into a convoy that was temporarily put on hold, and just sitting in the Loch Long or Gare Loch. Encountering no ASW patrols something felt out of place, nearing Kilmuth we could see massive fires, on a moonless night it looked as if the port was ablaze. We could easily sneak into and search the adjacent Loch for merchants at anchor waiting to be put to see. To everyone's surprise a single warships profile emerged as we headed east, we dove and moved slowly to find out it was the HMS Nelson anchored.
With all the time in the world to make as precise as shot as possible we sent two eels towards her, the first under the B turret and the second towards the boilers in the aft. The first eel must've been a magnetic impact as the following explosion shook the boat like it just had a full spread of charges dropped right next to it. The kaleun even backed away from the scope as if blinded from the light, he simply said that she was going to go down fast and to surface. Once on the surface it was obvious to us all, we blew up the powder magazine which then ignited the magazines for the A and C turrets causing the catastrophic explosion.

Huh, this is how I've been trying to make all of my pictures look recently... didn't even realize it had a separate thread!
Are you a screenshot artist? Are you interested in making art from your shots? Are you interested in learning more about how to make great screenshots? Check out http://www.screenshotworld.com
It's a great community where you can learn a lot and have some fun showing off your artistry.
We are thinking about setting up a specific thread for Silent Hunter series if there is enough interest.
