Can you explain how you did this?

Cant remember the entire process, but I've used pretty much the same method for all my black & white shots.

1. Turn the colors to black & white
2. Apply contrast so that the white & black kick up more
3. Apply noise, I think I use 7% for most of my shots.
4. Apply blur, IIRC, I used something like 3xblur for this one, also I blurred the BG more than the crewman & conning tower.

Yes, my fathers brother (uncle?) served in the Swedish merchant fleet during WW2. In the Atlantic the torpedoes where German, in the Baltic they where Russian or British (Swedish ships carried iron ore to Germany). The situation was much the same for Norwegian sailors during the war. If you got killed by the Germans you were a hero, if you got killed by the allies, no one wanted to know about it...
