Dear Mr. Morts;
Re your photograph of U-1132 immediately postwar: in-depth investigation of period records indicates that your 'unknown' corvette is most likely HMS Dunwich Castle, a Castle-class corvette commissioned April 6, 1943. Further investigation is underway in attempt to positively identify.
Sincerely, Warship International staff.

Sorry, I don't use a major mod or something similar. I run on stock with minor manual tweaks to loadout and crew.
1. Some close up shots are the results of a kind of bug for me. From time to time the following camera (".") centers itself at the stern of my U-Boot instead of centering at the conning tower. Switching through the contacts results in the same bug.
2. Other close up shots can simply be done by parking the U-Boot next to your desired object and hitting "." to activate the following camera. This camera moves into the forbidden F12 camera areas. This works on both "motherpoints" - your U-Boot and on the other ship.
I don't know what the others do to come realy close and I would appreciate to learn their technics (or is it "techniques"?). No. 1 is out of my influence and I often miss good situations...
I guess it's no secret to tell you this stuff. All should be able to make some good screenshots.
Have fun.

10-04-07, 03:17 PM
I generally try for camera locations that would be accessible to real wartime photographers (eg. on deck or standing on a pier on shore). I try to stick to subjects that would have had a reasonable chance of being recorded. And I try to avoid using the weaker parts of the SH3 world that are obviously CG no matter what you try to do to the image (rain for instance). Other than that, I just play with contrast and levels until I'm happy with what I see. Some (secret) :|\\ filters aside, I generally leave the original .BMP untouched as my BG and just add adjustment layers over top to get the exposure and contrast I want.

Crash dive Cheif! Take her down to 200m and fast! If we look like getting captured burn the photo's! :rotfl:
I'd love to be allowed to post some of the shots I've got from the next release but the Kpt. would have me up against a wall with blindfold if I did.
BTW the Signal and Life Magazine covers were only put out after gaining permission to distribute official GWX propoganda.:D
I for one do not use any camera mods, just arrow keys to position the camera where I want it. I try to get the camera somewhere that someone could have been to have taken a photo and then shoot. In the on deck photo all the clues about how the shot was made are actually in the shot. The only hint I'll give is that I used the ">" key camera and not the F12 free camera.
I've got to say though I'm blow away by some of the shots here guys the standard is excellent.

Imagine a posh, BBC accent:
"The Admiralty confirmed this morning that the loud explosions heard in the Dover area of the south coast were the result of a U-Boat attack upon the port. One ship was sunk. The HMS Jamaica, which had docked three days previously to resupply, was struck by three torpedos at roughly 6 o clock yesterday evening. 17 crewmen working in the bow of the ship were killed, with other minor injuries. Due to the shallow depth in the port, she is only partially submerged. Salvage efforts began this morning. The U-boat could not be tracked, although it is suspected to be the same that sunk a destroyer off Folkestone the day before last. That was this morning's news"

Have a play around with the filters. The main ones I use are Blur, Noise and Render. I start off in Picassa by making the image B&W or Sepia, I play around with the shadows and highlights and glow until I'm happy with the look then move into PS or GIMP where I add the border, depth of field blurring and film grain. I then add a new layer and mess with the scratches, hairs and damage effects using different brushes and brush thicknesses, turn that into an overlay layer and viola an old looking photo.
Keep at it until you come up with something that you like.

January 18, 1940 The British Special Air Service captures a German U-Boat. The SAS members found this U-Boat loaded with equipment and research documents and a small amount of torpedos in the bow compartment. Crates where found to contain parts for a windtunnel, wooden models for tests, a large amount of blueprints, and highly detailed documents for aircraft that where never seen before, all of these where ready for shipment back to Germany. With this vital research now obtained by the English the Germans will have much longer to get newer and better aircraft that could possably win the Germans the war.

@Kpt. Lehmann: I knew that the original modder had to make the Canal very much wider than the real one, due to terrain limitations in the game. That photo, with TarJak's shot, really shows how much it had to be compromised. Interesting comparison, and thanks for the shots, both of you.

It's not a mod! There is also no real trick to it. I just use the normal "<" or ">" key camera and mess with the arrow key's until I get a position that works. A hint is that having two units close to one another. You need to look at the radius of the camera "sweep" around the unit you are looking at and look for a ship that is close enough to be at least partially inside that radius. You can then move the camera sideways, up and down etc. to get the position to where it looks like a shot worth taking. It's a bit like RL photography in looking at the position you are in relation to the subject matter and framing things so that you get a shot that looks good.
Another technique is to use the stations on your sub to get a shot that is a bit different. You can also use cropping in your photo editor to make it look like the camera is on deck for some of the head on or stern on shots.
This one was simply taken from the DG station:
http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa54/TarJak/meeting2.jpg
For these I used the ">" and arrow keys to position the camera where I wanted it. No cropping or editing other than the antiquing:
