Historical context: With the intention of replacing the obsolete American submarines of the Balao Class of its fleet,in May 1975 the Spanish government signed a contract with the shipyard Bazan of Cartagena (Spain), for the construction under license,of two French Agosta design submarines and a second pair in June 1977.The four were built with some French technical assistance. In 1983 the first two ships of this series entered service, the «Galerna S-71» and the «Siroco S-72».
In 1985 the «Mistral S-73» and in 1986 the «Tramontana S-74»,last of its Class. On June 2012 the «Siroco S-72» was decommissioned and the «Mistral S-73» was discharged in 2021.
