12/22/02Hi.
You don't know me and I don't know you. Heh. BUT. I had an uncle request for me to locate for hima game that we both remember from the 80's. a sub sim named Gato. As far as I am aware it was the first ever sub sim for a computer. It's kind of raw. (Obviously, a dos app) but it was horrendously addictive. Anyway, I managed to dig the old disks out, and lo, they were still good. Don't know if you have heard of it, but I don't see it on your site. I'm pretty sure it must still be owned by someone, I haven't checked. Anyway. I repackaged it in a setup.exe format for him, and had to include a slowdown util. It seems to werk great. SO, I figured, you guys might want to see it for a nostalga trip, if nothing else. enjoy it!

MikOne of the new features we are planning for 2003 is a Subsim Newsletter. We have over 14,000 players in our database and we could let them know when new games and developments are coming.

Hey Neal
Couple of quick questions if you get the time to respond some time no hurry...
First I dig your site ...Excellent A++++ site
First ? were u ever in the navy on any ship...and do you have a section on your site about yourself...if not you should make one...
Second are u an American and do you live in the USA?
3rd I am a born history buff and love all history of all countries...and I haven't found too much on Americas WWII submarine victories..I have found things on our losses and things on German losses and more over German sub victoryies...but who are our naval sub heroes?
and last ? did any of our subs ever sink any German subs or vice versa....I need a face of an American Submariner to hold up to all the German ones I see... :)
I'm not prejudice but I am partial to the US :)
thks for having a killer site.

Hi,
I'm curious when "Sub Command" was originally released? Also, usually its been my experience when a price drops dramatically on software, a new release is coming out very soon and the retailer is trying to unload their inventory for the new edition. Is this why the price on Sub Command has decreased? I am looking for a good sub game and your review is excellent. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks............................
Skip Craig
SC came out Sept 2001. The price drop is a call the publisher makes based on sales. When sales at the original price decrease to a certain point, they lower the price. I am somewhat surprised that SC only sold in moderate numbers, I found it to be better than Jane's 688(I).

I would just like to thank all those involved in creating the Second Kampaine. Many people do not appreciate nor realize the time that is spent creating a work of this sort..not to mention that you did not get paid to do this. Anyway, thanks again...there are some of us that truley respect your work and look foward to any future additions.
Best Regards,

I just wanted to drop you a note to show appreciation for your Silent Hunter 2 add-ons I just downloaded. The new sound effects, the fireball, and the oil slick. Very nice stuff. I am a modder in the Ghost Recon community. I just created a major mod called "GangLand" that is going to be featured in PC GAMER magazine. My online name is "MONOLITH". I am a little late in getting to the SS2 scene, but have always loved sub sims. (I'm a Janes 688i fan from way back ;) ). Being a modder, I understand what its like to get feedback, and I just wanted you to know that I really liked your work. You've made my subsim experience even better. I love the new hull creaking sounds, very eerie!
Thanks again!

I have recently purchased Sub Commander after reviewing your site. It has been a while since I even had played a Sub sim. I think the last one I played was Seawolf. I wanted to give you a big thumbs up! Your site is great, very informative and easy to navigate.
I will be visiting more often now, after installing Sub Commander, looking into mulitplayer etc...
Good job guys!

I saw your page, and what can I say. I think people below says everything about it (I mean people from "contact us", and sorry for my english - I'm from Poland). What can I say? This page is great, it really kick ass. I'm a sort of a fanatic of sub warfare and play in almost every game you have on your page. By the way, maybe you know where I can get original version of Fast attack", if it is still possible.

I'm a late middle age corporate lawyer who became addicted to Silent Hunter a few years ago (much better than anything on tv). I have friends who are former bubble heads, and I work for Lockheed Martin NE&SS Undersea Systems, which integrates the Virginia Class combat system for the Navy (and Electric Boat). Frankly, I was a bit disappointed after buying SHII ...until I found your site. Your web-site offers downloads that really improve the game. Thanks to you, I'm glad I bought SHII.
Keep up the great work!

Just came across your site after seeing Silent Hunter II in the store. Have been leary of purchasing subsims. This may sound silly, but the last one I played at any length was Silent Service, which I found very good. (Mind you that was a few years ago). I have been looking for some decent subsims or surface fleet games (I was on a Canadian destroyer for 4 years, back when our government backed the military..yuk yuk). You seem to be quite up to date on this. I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

dear Neal -
Can you help me please? I have SH2 and it's pretty complicated. I am really looking for a simpler game - I've got on my Mac the deadly games sub sim 'Drumbeat' and it's very good. Is there anything for my PC using Windows ME that is similar and as simple and easy to play as the Deadly games UBoat and Operation Drumbeat games? Any of the older sub games -wofpack for example would be suitable? too many bells and whistles on SH2. What is SH1 the original sub game like? Help!
many thanks

Hello,
I was previously playing with Aces of the Deep, where the destroyers' AI was running well but the whole game was not deserving so poor designs. This is why I recently passed to Silent Hunter-II and I am very satisfied with these much better designs (explodes, various ships, view under sea...). However, I met problems with the erratic time compression... which made me coming fool when I had to waste ages before patroling where required. Visiting subsim.com to resolve, I found your modpack about a new campain and this runs much better than the original one ! This is a complete relief and, even if I only spent the first mission, I feel free very much and am able to patrol even if at 1024x when needed, knowing this will fall under control if any event requires. To my first try with it, I just reach 15,000 commercial tons with two very different situations and two isolated merchants and I wanted to thank you very much for your tribute to this game.
More, still coming from subsim.com, I enhanced the backgrounds so poor were the provided ones in the pack. As a Civilization-II (strategic game) modpack conceptor a couple of years ago [www.paris.web66.com], I hardly evaluate the amount of conception and additions you made and wanted to warmly thank you for all this.
Best Regards,
Frederic

Hello:
I have recently learned about your site through recent downloads for Sub Command & Silent Hunter II. I have a question regarding bumpmapping and why is it the water doesn't look all that detailed in Sub Command & Silent Hunter II? I purchased a game for my son on Playstation 2 called "Splashdown" and all I could say is "WOW!!". I am having fun with the two Subsim games, don't get me wrong, however, I would like to see more realism in future Subsims. I would hope that the makers of these games can make a Subsim in the first person perspective as Captain, of course, and have them be able to journey through a 3-D model of a Submarine with a crew as well. I recently purchased another game called "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault" and they had a beautiful interior model of a U-Boat. Hopefully Subsim game makers will take notice and make these issues possible. What do you think?

Hi Neal,
Iīm just somewhere in the middle of the foggy atlantic sea so Iīll cut it short: The campaigne you created is just GREAT with a captial "G"!!! Though Iīve only played the third mission so far Iīm already convinced that this is just what I had expected from a U-Boat sim! Actual radio traffic, strict orders, heavy weather (you know the atlantic is not quite the pacific, Iīve been there and I know...).
Great that you seem to stick to historical data: I sunk two merchants sailing all alone, which was as easy as history tells us (you seem to have read about the so called Happy Years!) The third mission is really challenging: Fog limiting my sight, threat of planes, diving recommended...Not knowing what Iīm to expect... thatīs it! Not to mention the torpedo PROBABLY fired by some unknown SUB in the second mission... Was it a German one or an Allied? I couldnīt make it out and I can tell you I was pretty happy I wasnīt hit.
You know Iīve been reading a lot about the U-Boat war and this seems to come pretty close to what one might call the real thing: Expecting the unexpected, never quite knowing whatīs to come. I take it for granted you sort of studied Buchheimīs novel "Das Boot"... Do you remember the passage where the skipper (it was Lehmann-Willenbrock in reality, by the way) ordered to fire at a target which finally turned out to be neutral? He was lucky the torpedo didnīt hit the ship! Iīve got the feeling your campaign provides me with all that stuff. Well done! If itīs true that the first missions are worse than the latter ones, well, what am I to expect?
Thanks for keeping SHII - an unfinished game so far - alive. Special thanks to all the "modders" who make this game become a gorgeous simulation! Now I gotta get back to the bridge, seems my first "Wachoffizier" has detected an unknown ship...
Cheers,
Andreas (AS)

Greetings,
I wish to congratulate you for your superb job with the second kampaigne: it rally seems to be playing another sim from SH2! Much more interesting and intriguing. I got to the seventh patrol and I enjoyed very much every one of them. Only at the third I've had some problems, due to my inability to survive the DDs in the fog. In the sixth mission I believe that a sinking has not been credited to me but again it is not your fault. Really really good: I thank you very much for your efforts and hopefully Ultimation will come and ask you how to do with the official patch. In that case you'll have to charge them an awful amount..... ;-)
thanks again and regards

Hey Neal
Its your old fan Struts. How have you been m8? Busy I'm sure. The site is really looking great! You have come along way since '96 and deceivingly so. I know you put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this page.
Take Care
Jim "Struts" RaringThanks, Struts! As one of the Subsim "old-timers", I appreciate your comments.

I am enjoying the heck out of your 2nd campaign. In every way, I like it better than the original. You have brought joy to a 56 year old gamer's heart.
Super job!

Hello, I've downloaded all of the currently available fixes, packs and adjustments for SH2. Unfortunately, this simulation still fails to entertain nearly as much as did SH1. SH2 is far too much like aces of the deep. Without beating the game to death, will there be any patches to further weaken the "super destroyers" in SH2? Also, is there any anticipated fix to the awards situation. There is no yardstick to gauge the awarding of the medals. I could not find any specific documentation at all. One mission will result in the receiving of a 2nd class Iron Cross. A repeat of the exact same mission, with the same parameters and results, yields no medal at all. It's very unclear and inconsistent. Any information would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Steve RizekSteve, we are looking into getting the rights to the source code and hiring a team of programmers make some improvements to SH2. Stay tuned!

I saw the low rating on Silent Service II and was disappointed. It is the only sub game I have ever played where you are not totally bogged down with controls, hokey in-between menu's, etc. You actually have a chance to complete missions. For instance in 688, you can never really take advantage of the sonar. Your pursuers never lose you. In SS2, you can actually evade and then reengage your foes to drive them before you to the woe and lamentation of their women.
Thanks

Hi there, I know that this is not the comment section but since it is closed until next month and me, not able to hold it till than, got to say something, I'll do it here. I just read the report about Silent Hunter 2 and the last sentence hocked up like a thorn in my eye. Well, I don't think that SH2 will replace AoD for 100%, SH1 not at all and is definately not state of the art. Would have been three years ago but not today anymore. The two mentions for reason: the only thing better at SH2 compared to AoD is, that it is a Windows game and Windows is the most spread OS of today. AoD always produced trouble under Windows due to its DOS-Origin. The reason why SH2 won't replace SH is, because they play in different theatres. War in the Pacific was much more different than in the atlantic. So, being a Trekki, I must say: To get a really satisfactory SubSim in ones hands, lets wait until the holodeck is invented, with an easy way to program it. ;-)
Best wishes for hunting

Hi,
What a terrific website. I have just bought sub command, so i am a complete newbie to this. However your site contains some really informative material and very useful pointers. And it is not too anoraky.. I have tried 1 very old subsim... it was so easy and predictable that i was bored inside an hour...i thought long and hard before i bought sub command, but this game is just exceptional.. mastering sonar (if that ever happens) is a real challenge....... so, i think i will be a regular visitor to the site. I have signed up to join wolfpack and look forward to playing on-line.pat scully.uk

Greetings
You guys are incredible. The amount of work and attention to details from you and your contributors is outstanding. Many thanks and well done. By way of comment though, having been weaned off AOD by systems upgrades and graduating to SH2 by way of the original, I find myself somewhat disappointed in SH2. The canned campaign and very limited single missions means that the game would very quickly be uninstalled without people like you to fill the void. SH2 was a real let down, as though one was taking delivery of a long awaited Porsche to discover that it is powered by a lawnmower engine. Pretty, but the novelty wears off real fast and until SH2 can get some staying power, AOD and SH will remain in intensive use. The SH2 community is far better served by subsim.com then by UBI software.

I like all the sites you have Neil. Do you know if there is a site dedicated to tactics of U-Boat commanders. I have purchased a copy of Silent Hunter 2 which is a really good sim game. The British Destroyers are very good at killing U-Boats unless you surprise them! So if there is a website giving tactics, that would just great!

Well, now it's up to you. Set the record straight! Which subsims have you been playing? Had any program errors you'd like to warn others about? Has Subsim.com been of use to you? Know any really good techniques for racking up major tonnage?
Let us hear from you!
