Dear Neal,
You've heard that a thousand times before, but I have to say it: You're doing a great job for the community, and you are doing it exceptionally well. I watched you pages growing, and now it's kind of an institution. Thank you a lot.
Michael.
Hi Michael, you know, it always sound great to hear people like what we do. Thanks!!

You have the most update files I have found so far for SH2. You have a GREAT site. You put the other sites to shame. Keep up the good work.

Greetings Neal,
I got my copy of Silent Hunter II in priority mail yesterday. (I purchased it from the link on your Web Site.) I'm into it now. It's pretty much what I anticipated - good! My congratulations to you - I see where you were listed on page 189 of the User Manual as an External Tester. Also on page 190, I see they have your Subsim Web Site listed. Your effort is very much appreciated. I am looking forward to Training for a while, then getting online for some Web combat
I really enjoyed the music from Aces of the Deep that someone from your group was able to convert to midi files. About a year ago, I converted some of the Aces of the Deep crew commands to wav files, and you posted them on your Web Site. Please keep up the good work!

if you ever have the nerve to call sh2 the new benchmark for sub sims or other misleading comments dragging innocent customers to buy unfinished products like sh2 im gonna find you and kick your balls.

Hi Neal,
What a great day it is for you guys in the States! So many getting SH2.
Unfortunately we have been unable to get a group together to take up you suggestion so we will have to wait until mid December. The reason being the on fowarding costs this end were a killer. Australia is a mighty big place and delivery from one end to the other is extremely expensive, not to mention our NZ friends in the 29th.
Thank you so much Neal for your suggestion and willingness to help us. I know I speak for all in the 29th when I say you are very much appreciated.

I purchased a copy of this game (Sub Command) and I can tell you that it aint user friendly and is in fact very hard to get to grips with. I am quite disappointed with it and think that the promos are misleading
Maurie
The "promos" should have touted that SC is a highly realistic, no holds barred, nuke submarine simulation. That means being not easy is a given.

First let me say the the work you do here is simply amazing. You are a TRUE and BLUE Bubblehead :-) Just a quick question: It seems that from my first post, unregistered, I was classified a wharfrat, and now after registering am called a mate. How are new and different classifications achieved? I looked through the help files but got miserably lost.
Thanks shipmate

You’re right, the Help files are no help The posting ranking are based on a very complex formula that a few NASA engineers I golf with helped me devise. If I told you, it would make your head hurt really bad. In layman’s terms, just think of it as the more you participate, the better your title gets. J

Hello,
I just ran across your review page, and am amazed at how many people are playing these submarine simulations. A more 'realistic' submarine sim would have you stare at your screen for hours on end, and just track fishing trawlers and 'biologics', but I digress.
I've tried 688(1), and although in general it was pretty well put together, I found myself nitpicking little details. I just got Sub Command, and found myself doing the exact same thing. I'm hoping that the more I try Sub Command, the more I'll like it.
As a sidenote, I saw a letter on your site from some skimmer or airedale somewhere who wanted a game from the view of hunting boats. If it was realistic they'd call it "Where?". We get found when we want to get found by whom we want to find us, period. Here endith the preaching.
Nice site.

Hi there, my name's Hassan and I'm an avid subsim gamer. First off, I'd like to congratulate you chaps on an excellent resource of reviews, tactics and previews. I hope that subsim.com will grow from strength to strength with you guys keeping it alive and well.
I just had a question concerning sonar. Well, I've played both Jane's 688(i), and I'm currently busy with Subcommand (Both of which are great titles!). One thing that's constantly been bugging me is how submarines get depth information about submerged contacts. Passive sonar initially gives you bearing information..., and after further analysis, you'd end up with course, speed and range information about the potential submerged target. But, one thing that's missing is the targets depth. For all you know, you may have the correct range, course and speed info about an enemy sub that's very close to your own vessel, but it could be a few hundred feet above or below you. The same goes for active sonar; at the expense of giveing your position away, you gain course, speed, and range info, but again, no DEPTH!!!
I'd really appreciate a response from you guys, if there's one thing that 've always respected about subsim.com, it's the accuracy of the info you guys provide.
Thanks a million
Your's faithfully
- Hassan
Thanks, "accuracy of the info" is my middle name. I sent your sonar question to Frank, he’s the fast attack expert.

To the Sub Command Game Reviewer.
Yes I agree with you on all the points you mentioned. It’s a great sequel. You even solved the mystery concerning the sonar feedback when travelling in shallow water, although this can be solved by retrieving/ reeling in the sonar relay until the feedback subsides. You mentioned that most of the bugs have been fixed…. Has anyone noticed that when you sink an enemy sub; the sub is hit by a torpedo, explodes only once, and then sinks slowly to the bottom, occasionally omitting the sound of the hull creaking under water pressure.
Now my point is this. The damaged submarine will sink slowly to the bottom even if the bottom depth is 14,000 feet still omitting only the sound of creaking bulkheads! i.e. it does not implode as it did in the previous version 688(I) Hunter killer. Making that wonderful deep detonation that echoed through the depths. Even when I dived with my Sub below test depth it simply and rather pathetically when bang…. And then began to sink slowly to the bottom still intact although battered omitting creaking sounds from the bulkheads! (This was viewed with truth on and in the 3D window) Also when you hit an enemy target there is naturally an explosion. You can see and hear this in the 3D Window, but you cannot see this on your sonar panel or hear it in your sub. Only a report appears on your crew’s comments line. Now I’m not an marine biologist but I Know that sound travels very well through water, ask a Whale, or a submarine Captain who’s trying to be quite. To make my point read the back of the Game box. I quote " Plus exciting sound modes pull you in like never before. You won’t just hear depth charges, you will feel them" I loved the first game the Graphics were ok but the sound affects and the game complexity were superb. Now the sequel is better graphically and the game play beautifully complex but the faulty sound files become annoying especially when you have spent over 5 hours hunting down, tracking and finally sinking an enemy sub to be rewarded with a crew mans message " Explosion on bearing XXX". No explosion echoing through the depths and no deep boom as your enemy implodes!
Please don’t think I’m bloodthirsty it’s just" to the victor goes the spoils." Chris Walsh

Neal,
I am a fairly regular visitor to your site, and just read a comment you made in the forums about your upcoming review. You said this
"After 24 hours with the gold copy they sent me, it appears to play better than the alpha I previewed a few months ago, and it was very solid. So far I have not found any real flaws with Sub Command, just a scant number of minor details, so I anticpate it will match or beat Jane's 688(I)."
If you have found the game to be so flaw free, why havent you tried to tell all of the people with problems what they are doing wrong and how to fix them? I look at the bug list and see that it has become a repeat of that earlier thread "subsim not so good".
I ordered this product based on your review of the alpha, and you never mentioned that the AI crew spotted contacts that a human couldnt, or any of the other problems like torpedos that ping 360 degrees etc. So please dont whitewash the review of the final product like you did the review of the alpha. If it is bug ridden, please say so. I understand why you might hesitate to do so - because there are so few companies developing hardcore sims anymore, you probably dont want them to get bad press etc etc. But by ignoring obvious bugs and flaws, you encourage developers to ship flawed and unfinished games to us, the paying consumer.
Mike Boeckeler
Mike, first, you are mistaken if you think Sonalysts can be encouraged to cut corners and ship "flawed and unfinished games" to anyone. You don’t know the level of integrity these guys pack when they embark on a project. You are right, I don’t want to create bad press based on an alpha or beta build of a subsim but I don’t whitewash any more than I bash. I would never slant a review to please a developer or publisher, no matter how much I want them to continue making sims or how much regard I have for them. However, the sole reason I don’t furnish readers with an itemized bug report on a pre-release version of a game is because many if not all of the bugs will be fixed in the final release. It would be a stupid waste of my time to do that. Three points I want to close with: 1. Most sim developers will make the best game they can given the budget and time constraints that are real-life factors, 2. All computer products, especially games, have some bugs or flaws. 3. Make certain you have the newest drivers for your hardware.

Dear Neal,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply and help on the manual pages for 688(I). Having this information to hand really has improved the whole package (especially what the sonar operators were trying to tell me!). Excellent web site - I've already pointed another couple of enthusiasts in your direction. Keep up the good work

Folks,
I wondering just how together the people at EA are! I just read on your german warsim link that EA moved the release date for Sub Command back to October 4 yet the release date on the EA Sub Command site is still September... something... It would seam Ebay also has the October 4 date. What I'm hoping is that in the persuit of perfection everything else is taking a back seat. I'm starting to feel like the "DONKEY" in persuit of the un-attainable carrot. We've been entised with screen shots and held off "Just one more month" with interviews; COME ON GUYS FINISH THE DAMN THING ALREADY. I've been shifting back and forth in my seat for a year now. I WANT TO SINK SOMETHING NEW!!!
Sincerely Impatient,

Hi Neal....
I've got the floppy-disk version of Aces Of The Deep (for DOS). If I install the Expansion Disk, can I play Aotd in Windows?? I've got a 700 MHz processor, so I can't play Aotd. That's the reason why I've searched for Command Aces Of The Deep. And I've got a tip for you: If you download Winamp from www.winamp.com you can play all the music themes from Aces Of The Deep (Dixieland, Emperor Waltz, Blue Danube enz....). All these files are .hmp files. If you collect them all you can put them on you site. Please mail me back if you know if I can play Aotd in Windows with the Expansion Disk.

Folks,
I was curious, why do you think nobody has put out an SSBN sim? You know, from an EAM to spinning up missles one through twenty while maintaining a stealthy posture. I'd like to think that the sim companies are taking the position that turning these unthinkable actions into a game might serve to belittle or at the very least numb people to the awesome responsibility placed on the skippers and crews of our Ohio class SSBNs.Then again, I still believe in Christmas spirit, extra terrestrials and getting married once till death do you part. It's probably that a bunch of suits in a forty story building somewere decided that such a product might not have enough mass-appeal to turn a profit. Or maybe there is some obscure law that prohibits making profit on anihilation. Far fetched? Maybe, but personaly I think that not only would such a sim honor our "Silent Service" and the men therein, but if properly put together, it could probably make quite a bit of money. I'd buy it. I would appreciate your insights. Thanks,
ChrisI don’t think the ethics of a sim launching nukes is the question, it’s more a matter of gameplay. A SSBN nuke subsim would not have as much action as the fast attack variety and publishers don’t feel it would sell.

Neal,
Forget my earlier e-mail about my problem with the CD-ROM. I found one of your tips and moved the BUD folder into the C drive and the game works PERFECTLY, even without the CD. Your tip was right on the money. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I'm finally back on patrol after about 9 months of problems and I celebrated by raising the broom on the periscope-a clean sweep on my patrol. Keep up the great work and I'll be back many times to your website.

I only recently heard about your website and sent you a request for help just a few minutes ago to get my Silent Hunter back on line. I started reading your readers comments and am very impressed with your website and have bookmarked it to return many times. I don't remember the names of some of the subsims I tried on the old Commodore 64 but am extremely happy with SH, if I could only get it back on the air. I had sound card troubles (finally fixed) and mouse troubles (finally fixed) but I can't seem to get the program to recognize the fact that the CD-ROM is in place. I'll keep searching your fixes and tips to find the answer but keep up the excellent work and I'LL BE BACK !!!

Neal I have been a submarine addic since I was 14 years old.. My dad served aboard the Old S-10 and gave me the love of submarines... and the sea. I have collected many books and video on submarines, but have never seen any thing on the old TV series SILENT SERVICE. What ever happen to the series and is it available for purchase? Thank you and keep up the good work.....
Lee
I have heard that a museum owns the rights to Silent Service. Perhaps they will decide to make it available someday.

I was just referred to your site by a friend and I love it. Keep up the good work. I just have one suggestion to you in your editorial January 2001. To be politically correct even though most sim fans are men I do know a few women. Maybe you should say people. SUBSIM Review went from just one guy's reviews to previews, interviews, troubleshooting tips, downloads, contests, forums where every tech support question is answered, and more, all contributed by men who love military sims. And we do it for a few key reasons. Anyway, I didn’t even know Combatsim.com sold games. I have used their site to review games before purchase. I feel extremely guilty for not buying any games from them. This is why I am going to your site to preorder Sub Commander now.
Thanks for all your efforts,--Jerry
Yes, you are right, I should not specify "men". My mistake, because there are women who contribute to the success of SUBSIM Review. Thanks for pointing this out.
I may be wrong but I don't think Combatsim used to sell games.... the main guy mentioned he thought it would appear as a conflict of interest. I started selling the games when the costs started mounting up. I was happy to learn many people would help us out by buying games through us! So now I have a good prize fund of several hundred dollars a year!

I used to have a Submarine Game called "Silent Service" . It was a World War 2 Diesel Sub action game set in in the Pacific. You could attack Japanese convoys, Their escorts and more. I loved the Game. Is there anything like this available now.

Hello!
I am a Swede who, by pure accident, stumbled upon Your site and now I visit it on a daily basis. There is one thing that I would like for You to write about; Swedish submarines. Sweden have the leading technology for conventional submarines, but I feel that to few people are aware of this fact and it's a shame that there is no simulators that allows Me, and others, to virtually wage war with them(the Swedish submarines, that is). Feel free to check out http://www2.mil.se/?lang=eng. Here You will find lots of information regarding the Swedish armed forces. The reason I'm asking You to do this is because I did my militaryservice as a SONAR-opoerator, and since then I've been hooked on naval combat simulators.
Thank You in advance, and please forgive any shortcomings in my English.
Sincerely,
Henrik Tham, ex-Swedish navy SONARopperator.
Thanks for the link, I wish we could get Swedish, German, and British subs in a subsim, too.

Dear Neal,
Congratulations for your page. It is really superb!
I dare to bother you since long ago I have been trying to get an English version of Silent Hunter 1. Unfortunatedly, in Argentina where I live the game is only available in Spanish. Without intending to be offensive to the Spanish language, I am convinced that the simulation of an American Submarine must be in English. I have tried in a recent visit to the USA to get the game without success, also I have tried the most popular webshops in the Internet with the same result. Attempts to find the game in abandonware sites also failed, the only one I found is in Home of the Underdogs, however it is a RIP of the Original CD and the speech and interviews to Bud have been excluded. Can you give me some indications where I can get the game? Do you know somebody who is ready to upload a complete ISO Image of the CD in a Webspace like Freedrive or Myspace enabling me to download it? An alternative, provided that you have the CD and the time to make me a copy, is to send the copy to an address in Houston (The company I work with has an office there) and my friends there will send it to me in Argentina. Needless to say that I am ready to cover your costs. Thank you for your time. Congratulations once again for your site.
Mario Schaetzle
Married, two boys, 52 years old and fanatic admirer of Subs.
This is a real problem with games once they get a few years old and are not commercially available. I will contact the publisher and see if they will allow me to make a copy; I cannot send a copy without their permission, of course. Silent Hunter is their product and I stay away from pirating. I will try and see what I can do.

Hey Neal,
unfortunately I had to read at "deepdomain.org" that SH 2 will be released in July 2001 (instead the end of May). Is this true or not. And do you know if there will be any demo before or not? Please answers.
Thank you
Christian
P.S.: You are really a lucky man because you have already played a beta of
SH 2.
SHII could make it out in June or July, the dev team want to get all they can done and all the bugs fixed. Yes, I consider myself lucky, too! Getting a chance to offer feedback and play testing to the SHII dev team was a wonderful experience.

Greetings,
I would like to say that i'm very pleased by finding such an excellent submarine simulations community this makes us enjoy even more the delights of submarine simulation, as well as forming a brotherhood of fellow virtual boat skippers whether you are a hardcore sub freak or not. The first sub sim i've ever played was Gato from Spectrum Holobyte and that was like in 1988 ever since i've been loyal to sub simulations like other older classics like 688 attack sub,Wolfpack both Silent Service I & II, Wolfpack, Aces of the deep, etc. The pinnacle of Sub sims in my opinion was 688 hunter killer everyone must recognize this, but if you're a WWII sub freak like then you must praise Silent Hunter for it's unquestionable feel of being under water and having a boat on your command, we'll see if Silent Hunter II can best its predecessor, at least i hope it does.

Hi, Neal
Well, I happened to check your site the other day, and I see you posted my tips about using sound and digitized speech in Silent Service II. Thanks for that. Your site is really the best. I'm on IRC sometimes, and I always send gamers that I meet to your site, when they express interest in naval games. When I first joined your board, I was only using a 233 mHz Pentium with an 8 meg PCI video card. Last month, I upgraded my motherboard to a 500 mHz cpu, and got a TNT2 Ultra AGP card. I can't believe how much better graphics are, now. It has truly made gaming a lot more enjoyable. I need to find out what that FSP project is all about. I remembered hearing about it a few months ago, and thought it was just a set of books someone had written about the ship data. I didn't know they had actually modified the game itself. I just downloaded it, and will look at it shortly.
Again, thanks a lot for the great site.

Dear Neal,
thank you for a wonderful site. I recently aquired the Janes Naval Warfare collection from your SUBSIM store and for some weeks now have been trying to 'master' 688.Is this simulation brilliant or what? One of these days I'll pluck-up courage and join the Sea Wolves! Anyway, while reading the articles on this site I saw one from Vasili Manelis in Johannesburg who was desperate to get his hands on Silent Service 2. I know I ordered my copy in the UK but cannot remember from which company. Seeing as I'm addicted to 688 and have no need for my SS2 compact disc anymore, I'll be only too happy to send it to Vasili if he will send me his postal address, free of charge. By the way, I spent some years in Jo'burg Vasili so I may have met you Send me your address and I'll post it to you ASAP.....OK mate?
Andy, Wolverhampton, England.
PS. My beloved football team Wolverhampton Wanderers are nick-named "The Wolves" so there may be an omen there!
Thanks, I will forward your offer and e-mail address to Vasili.

I just wanted to drop you a quick note. I'm Christopher Johnson, a US Soldier stationed in Germany. I've been looking for 688(i) for a long time, and the only place I found it was here in Germany, unfortunately in German. The German version is the US version, with German mission briefings and instruction manual on CD (PDF Format). I have been searching the net now for 2 weeks, trying to find the manual in English. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! I just wanted to say thank you. I will now be able to understand what all of those little buttons do!! :)
Thanks again.

Neal,
I am exceedingly pleased to tell you that I've got sound with CAOD!!! Finally!!! After reading the CAOD section of Tactics and Tips I downloaded what appears to be the latest drivers for my sound card, an ESS Solo 1, and I re-installed CAOD, and that wonderful, wonderful music started playing at the beginning. Thanks so much!

About 10 or so years ago I played a game called Submarine Simulator (Or something like that.) I loved it. I used to enjoy it so much that I would let my computer run for weeks without have anything else going....Why? Because I did not know about the speed increase you could implement...heh (I was 13 or so.). The long of the short is I did not know what to buy for another sub sim. What really fired me back up was watching U-571 and remember my old days of killing unsuspecting freighters and things...it was a blast.
Your site provided me all the information for me to make a good decision. I decided on 688(I) because it got a high rating on your site and was part of the 3-in-1 package for 19.99 at my local retailer. I've only played 2 training missions so far and am totally PSYCHED about playing more and more of it. It is now 0400 where I am, and I am just printing the guides you have for my game. (It did not come with a manual.) I will read that, take a shower and play until it is time to go to work 26 hours from now.
Thanks again...You guys ROCK!

Hi, (I´m German, so please excuse my bad English) I didn’t know that there is an Website for Subsims, but I´m very happy I found it, because I thought this Genre was dead. I have played Aces of the Deep for quite a time and I really liked it, as I heard that there will be a sequel for Silent Hunter I was very pleased, as I then heard that the work on it had stopped, it was for me a big disappointment. Now it´s really good news that it will be released and I´m happy that there are still a lot of people who like subsims like me (or even more). I hope we could keep this genre alive. (one point else: it should be needless to say but I just want to mention that just because I´m German and I like subsims it don’t mean that I like Hitler, the Nazis or anything else in this direction, I just like submarines, thats all.)

Hello,
congratulations for your 4th year. I think I found your side on the www 2 years ago, when I startet in becomming a fan of the atomic submarines. Since then I tried to collect the sims and books and plastic models of modern submarines. That is not so easy here in Germany to find. So I must say that your page is a great help. Hope you will continue this way.
Greetings from Germany.

Hello,
Under Win 98, I could'nt have sound for SH1 (which takes off a lot of interest in the game). I've found the solution in your SH1 TIPS, "Sound" file. It explains how to have sound for dos programs under Win 98! It's very simple but first you have to know it!!! Thank's a lot to your great sub website.

Hello,
Just wanted to shoot out a big thanks for posting the Sea Dogs walkthrough. It's very detailed walkthrough and a must have for all of us Sea Dog players.
I've been a Subsim fan ever since Janes 688i came out. I really enjoy the articles and wish you continued success.

Enjoyed your review of the Silent Hunter II beta. I have played Silent Hunter I and also 688I. My problem is that I am deaf, and we in the deaf community have to be careful of the Computer games we buy because many of them use voice or sound commands over the speaker to perform operations.
My question is, is Silent Hunter II going to be one of those games. I suspect it is as you mentioned listening for screw noises and I would suspect sonar pings. Ironically I was a Sonarman 2nd class on a destroyer in WWII. Did convoy duty in the Atlantic and then over in the Pacific. Obviously had perfect hearing then but since 1953 it has got progressively worse and I am now on a disability pension. It seems like computer games are relying more and more on sound. Which of course offers less games that we who are deaf can play. Perhaps someday they will have closed captioning like they do on television.
Sincerely, Walter Allison

Dear mates Happy 2001
My first contact with a computer was in 1982 when I got the Sinclair ZX81. Then I got the Sinclair Spectrum, which I still have (but not use). I had a subsim which I think was called "Hunter Killer", which unfortunately I do not have anymore although I 've kept other Spectrum avsims.
In 1986 I got an Amstrad 1640 which I have been using till Nov 1998, when I got a more modern machine. My system now is a Celeron 466, 8 MBHD. 192 RAM, Diamond Viper 550, Soundblaster 128 with Windows Me installed over the Win 98 SE.
I bought, very cheaply, SILENT HUNTER from a shop in Athens in December '98. It was placed aside with some other "obsolete" DOS programs like "Topgun Fire at will" and "Flying Corps Gold" which I also got. My grand father was a merchant marine Captain, twice torpedoed by U-boats during the the First World War. My father became the owner of 4 small ships (750 - 2.500 t) but I did not choose to follow him although I studied law and shipping. I did my service in the Greek navy in 1972-75 and for the last 10 years I have been living in a small vineyard estate in the island of Kefalonia the biggest of the Ionian Islands in the western part of Greece.
I had been involved with runabouts since I was 10 years old and for a period I had my own outboard workshop. I also worked for 6 months as an apprentice captain on a ship and I also gained some sailing experience during some short trips on a friend's 38 f motorsailer. I am a great fan of Douglas Reeman's naval novels but trying to make a living in order to make wines that have won 3 international awards so far, has not left me with much time to really delve deeper with SILENT HUNTER. Through the site of the very good VIRTUAL SAILOR I came to yours (and other sites) and I was really surprised from the quality. the attention to detail, the dedication and the actual help and LOTS of information a subsim fan can find in your site. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I knew that SH was a good sim but I never thought that so many people were involved with this and the other naval sims.
My SH version is 1.1. Sometime in 1999 I think, I downloaded an update from SSI (shv1 31(1) - 5.656 KB) which upgraded my version to 1.31. There is no mention of this update in your site. I recently installed again SH through the Dos Prompt. I also installed all the utilities and extras that I found in your site and I also, following Neal's advice, got the program to start from the HD without the help of the CD. It worked OK by changing the line in SHPATH to BUD=C:\SILENT\BUD Sorry for being long winded. I just feel very thankful and I wanted to communicate with you. Please let the other "mates" know that SH works with no problem on a configuration like mine called from an icon on my desktop. I never had any problems whatsoever with SH.
Best regards

Neal thank you very much , I got the missions down loaded and have played a couple, I also got Silent Hunter loaded by resetting my sound card. Sir I can not thank you enough, I don't know what I could do for you, but I would sure try.
Thanks again,
Ron Banks
Well, now it's up to you. Set the record straight! Which subsims have you been playing? Had any program errors you'd like to warn others about? Has Subsim.com been of use to you? Know any really good techniques for racking up major tonnage?
Let us hear from you!
