GWX, SH3 and medals

First off just a thanks for the Grey Wolfs and SH3 great stuff. I dusted off my game a couple of weeks ago and you guys have done a real nice job.
My question is about medals. Why are they so easily given out. I just started a new career, did a 5 day shakedown, came back exited out of the game and back to SH3 where upons I gave everyone 3 crosses, wound badges and a uboat clasp. And why wouldn't I, now I don't have to worry about an inexperienced crew right?
Seriously though, how do you guys handle this?? I hate to exploit a game that has reached the top of the mountain.

Oh while someone here is hopefully trying to help me a couple of other quick questions.

Renown seems hard to come by, any suggestions or is it just sink sink sink~! Can I avoid going to my 'patrol area' without penalty?

Any helpful threads, links or just suggestions as far as hitting ships zig zagging? (using GWX, SH3).

If I start out in the 1st Flotilia, will I ever get a deck gun? It doesn't look like it.

Using real world ship damage, aka how long it takes to sink, any guidlines on how long it should take, 2hrs or less? I only had on fish left and this ship would not sink. I finally had to give up and head for home, if I only had a deck gun.

Welcome aboard Hanzberger

Play the mod using SH3 Commander (IMHO a must have) and you can control who receives what and when.

All renown for going to and staying 24 hrs has been disabled. The renown for returning to base has never worked, not even in the stock game.

When you chose 1st Flotilla did you choose a Type IIA?....if so, they were never fitted with an 88mm deck gun. Far better you choose the VIIB.

Ship sinking times vary, depending on where the damage you have inflicted is situated. Ships that sink as a result of flooding take time, just as they did in RL. It is difficult to put timescales on what is such a large variable.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes~!, Yes I am using SH3 Commander, sorry I didn't make that clear. 2.5 yr old woke me up early and then I jumped on here before I hit the high seas.

I'm still confused on the medals. Is it up to me when and who gets them?? And...........how will I know this and why not give them all out in the beginning like I posted early??? Maybe I am having a brain fart here.

Ok clear on the renown, just double checking. TY

Not sure what type of U boat I selected for the 1st flotilia, probably whatever you start out in. So if that is the case then you can never get a deck gun, correct?

Ship sinking times: So if I hang around for 1-2 days, that ship could still sink and hence I would get my renown, which seems like gold to me right now. lol And how does storm damage play into this scenario?

Using GWX and Commander, any tips on sinking a zig zagging ship.

You can give medals to whomever you wish in CMDR; it would appear prudent to award them to the most valuable crew members first. As in real life, you as the commander, pick out those who did the most to ensure a successful patrol.
Ships sink when they are good and ready to do so. Yes, they will sink faster in bad weather and heavy seas.
To hit a zig zagging ship: the closer, the better. Plan to fire just as the vessel starts to turn towards your sub. Use the fastest setting possible on your torpedo.
Hope it is not a dud.

You do not have to give the medals out if you think it unrealistic....SH3 Commander allows you total control (including awarding medals the game has not yet awarded you)....the chice/decision is yours.

Start another career in 1st Flotilla and choose the VIIB, go to the upgrade/equipment screen and select the 88mm.

Ships don't always sink, it is dependant on the amount of damage they incur.....just as in RL, many ships limped back to port despite severe damage.

Weather can add damage to a ship as can fire.

Firing at ships that zig zag is a knack you will master as you become more proficient at playing the game. If you study the ships movements carefully you will soon see a mean course in your minds eye and be able to predict when the ship is headed more or less toward you....the best firing solution.

Edit: Crossed posts Irish

Hey guys, thanks. I think I am on board now. I did a little searching about the medal thing since it seems to have a great impact on the crew not getting fatigued. And I don't like to cheat, I wish I was good enough to play on 100% but I run it at 57%.

Looks like you should let the Game and not SH3 Commander decide who gets what and when. Is this correct??? Any other Commander things I should avoid using? (running GWX which is the s##t).

Thanks for the tips on deck gun and zig zag. I actually hit a zig zigger (1 out of 5) and it bounced off. ARGGG I was wondering if since I was close at the time should I have used IMPACT instead of Magnetic???

Allow a minimum distance between the target and yourself of 300 metres to allow the torpedos to arm (400 metres for the Falke/homing one).

As for the medals, I use SH3 Commander, but very carefully. Part of the problem is that the stock game only lets you hand out one medal or badge at a time. Every uboatman recieved the u-boat badge after his second patrol (depending on the date, of course - it didn't exist at the start of the war). The game only lets you give one, when the whole crew would get it in real life.

Also if you have a wounded sailor and he gets healed before the patrol is over, the game won't let you give him a wound badge; but SH3 Commander will.

As to the rest, I decide who really deserves medals and promotions, and try not to overdo it.
