As for the medals, I use SH3 Commander, but very carefully. Part of the problem is that the stock game only lets you hand out one medal or badge at a time. Every uboatman recieved the u-boat badge after his second patrol (depending on the date, of course - it didn't exist at the start of the war). The game only lets you give one, when the whole crew would get it in real life.
Also if you have a wounded sailor and he gets healed before the patrol is over, the game won't let you give him a wound badge; but SH3 Commander will. As to the rest, I decide who really deserves medals and promotions, and try not to overdo it. ![]()

First post, big fan of modded SH series... not so much vanilla SH series... Ubisoft had better start hiring modders here...
A pretty amazing thing happened when I was on my third patrol... I attacked a destroyer... (it was a very lucky shot considering how fast it was going.) But it didn't go down immediately... and came at me with a vengeance... it sank in about 5 minutes and me, being the destroyer-fearing commander that I am, dived to the bottom and waited for it to sink... When I got the all clear, I did a very foolish thing. I blew the ballasts before checking for any enemy contacts on the surface... And surprise! I came face to face with 2 British Auxiliary Cruisers. Both were about 1500-2000 meters, off my starboard at 20-25 degrees. We open up on each other at about the same time. But instead of diving... which I should have done... I decide to fight it out on the surface in a gun battle... Not what I would have done in real life... 10 minutes and 90 rounds later... Both Auxiliary Cruisers are dead in the water, sinking extremely slowly... took over 30 minutes each... total tonnage from that battle, 20,000 tons... I, on the other hand, came out of this without a scratch... they didn't even nick the paint... not even a single machine gun round from their AA found their way to me. Funny thing is... I wasn't moving the entire battle... I sat and fired at the ships as they used evasive maneuvers to avoid torps I never launched... I'm guessing that the scenario is not realistic... I should have been plastered all over the seafloor going head to head with 10 enemy guns to my measly one... Problem was... I changed the crew before I looked at the names of the seamen manning the gun... I had a PO with gun qual... so I remembered to give him a Iron Cross First Class. But should those seamen get medals too? The point is... Does SH3 Commander give out medals with Auto-fix? I know that the autofix works on the U-boat clasp... but awarding medals and promotions with SH3 is really awkward. I don't know what I'm doing so I always go overboard... Every sailor under my command has a Iron Cross 2nd class... is that realistic? isn't there like a rulebook or something detailing promotions and medals? And what about wounded crew members that heal-up on the return trip? Does SH3 Commander remember their names too for the wound badge? Can they be autofixed with the wound badge? |

You can use Commander to award medals manually.
In my experience I've never seen anyone awarded the wound badge by the game. ![]() |

Having an entire crew with EK2's rarely happened as you would constantly get new crewmen aboard that would have no awards save the u-boat badge. There were several times where the entire crew was awarded EK2's after a particular successful/spectacular partrol (Prien's entire crew got EK2's after the Scapa flow mission upon return). EK2's were handed out pretty easily though, if you managed to keep the same crew (or got lucky and got veterans in crew transfers) for 2 or 3 patrols it would have been very possible that at that time the entire crew would have EK2's. SHC can't automate awards, the auto removes awards that are in conflict with historical data; such as getting a German Cross in 39' or 40'. The real award wasn't established until 41' so SHC removes it for you, it does offer suggestions though when you go to each crew member. The EK is a very low (only award lower was the combat war merit cross) award. It's present day equavalent would be a Navy Achievement medal (USA) or a Distinguished Service Cross (British). Its only requisites was a "single act of bravery in combat beyond the normal fullfillment of duty". |
