Sorry if this seems obvious; when using the hydrophone, are the readings relative to the compass or the current position of the u-boat?

Of course, as the u boats screws give a reading at 180 when the engines are running, then the readings are relative to the u-boat and not the compass...

He probaly meant azimuth or compass card..
Regardless what your ship's heading, its bow will always be 000 or 360. Starboard , always 090, the stern 180 and port 270.
