SH7 comes about, this laptop that is. Not gonna stop using XP.
just a heads up on a PITA issue with windows 7 is you can no longer change how files are arranged, only microsoft decides how that is done

i havent installed windows 7 yet but my sister told me windows 7 takes away your ability to sort files by name, type, format or whatever so things are arranged the way microsoft wants them and thats it, YOU dont get to decide how to arrange your own files

That's not true, you can sort files anyway you want. Probably she has a grouped view active or something.

Still, this quote:

is not true. You can sort in dozens of ways, using grouping etc. MS does not decide how you display your files/items, you still choose yourself and all the sort features you mentioned still are available.

The feature you talk about is that Auto Arrange is no longer an option, it is on by default and you can't change that (although I'm guessing it probably is still available through a registry hack). But I don't miss it, in fact, I cursed it as of Win95... The fact that every single folder I would traverse would look differently is completely retarded (IMO ). I want my files in an ordered list, simple, with the exception of video's and photo's. They can have thumbs... but still be sorted by name

I have been running SHIV on Windows7 Ultimate 64-Bit with no problems.
Have got it installed on a seperate hard drive from the O/S hard drive as a pre-installed setup from my previous O/S WinXP 64-Bit. so I didn't have
to re-install on the new system.

Cheers

while the wording i used might not be correct you said it yourself that it IS true that windows 7 takes away your freedom to arrange files the way I want them to be.

just because you like it that way doesnt mean its a "good thing" that everyone else is forced into going along with microsofts idea of how files should be arranged

i found the ability to arrange files differently in ways that made more sense to me is very usefull to me and i find not being able to do this will definately be a very very big negative. having every file look different is of no concern to me as long as what im looking for in that file is easier on me to find or use what i want.

I can understand if you are used to it it is annoying to see it go. But this is with many things, new things, changes, scare people. S3D scared people too, ppl were so used to hexeditors and TT... But if I look today, it's a whole different story...

But still, it's not MS vs the world... They took out a feature that is more confusing than it is logical to the common user, and I thing it's wise they did. I've seen my share of "wtf, where is that folder/item" just to point the user to the fact that the item is placed outside the view. Let's say I remove a specific feature from S3D, as my judgement (and others) tells me it better is left out than in, some people will also complain. Perhaps I am right, perhaps I am not, but as the developer it's still my call. And you will just have to get used to it in the long run. And perhaps, realize afterwards, that it was a good thing... or not... whatever
