I highlighted the node tree and select export. Save the chunk. But when I try to import the chunk into the other file, I get an error message.

What error message do you get?
In this thread, I've explained the export/import options, make sure you use the (default) settings I provided in the screenshots. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132768 And if you don't already, use the latest version of S3D.
