They look like mini U-boats, maybe they should have been fitted with a couple of torp. tubes and trim tanks, so the shot down Luft. fliers could get some payback. But then they would have to have a mini crew waiting, when the pilot swam up and boarded:

Ahh! I saw one of these in 'We Dive at Dawn' and wondered what it was all about. That one was fitted with a radio, though I suspect that was a fiction, I can't see radios being left drifting in the channel, not to mention the power for them.

There were, infact, radios in them.
Check the link in the first post. It has a good breakdown on the Udets. ![]() But from my research, no downed flyer ever reached a Udet to raise the flag or radio in. It's a different story with the Cuckoo. (British version of the Rescue Buoy) |
