Default [REQ]/guestion... G.U.P.P.Y mod??

I know some people are working on the nuke subs in the cold war mod
but,
are there any modders working on G.U.P.P.Y (I think that's what It's called)

basically, it was a program to upgrade the old Balao,Tench and Gato boats for modern engagements. New towers were fabricated and even snorkels were added.
here's a link to the wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater..._Power_Program

i really think this would rock....

Default I agree

I suggested that as a starting point for the cold war mod.

We already have a functioning snorkel mod for 1.5 . It seems to me all we need is a GUPPY sail modeled, outfit your boat with a load heavy with acoustic torpedoes from 1.5, and we are pretty well there.

I hope someone with some modelling skills (maybe Ducimus who brought us the new Tench model with the FM sonar head?) picks this up...

Making the GUPPY available as an upgrade would be the first step in the cold war direction. The most diffcult part is creating the 3d model, performance can be easily modded using existing balao class as starting point.

To me, this whole approach seems a lot more reasonable than trying to model Novembers and 688, with waterfall and towed arrays.

Plus I love the grotesqueness of some of the GUPPY and radar picket boats!

Yeah, I really wasn't looking to drive a 688i when the idea first came up with a Cold War mod. GUPPY/SSK boats and other 1950-built boats were what I had in mind.

A slow evolution to more modern boats and shapes would certainly make more sense.

Yea, that was my hope as well. A later-40s Cold War scenario would be really cool, and unlike modern boats, all the technology neccesary to model boats of that era is already in the game!

i'm comfortable working in 3dsmax and, if it's just a question of making a new sail mesh and using pack3d on the sh4 files (as i'm assuming it would be), would be up to taking a crack at it...
does anyone have any schematics for the various guppy sails?

cheers
hc

edit: of course, the bows were altered on the guppy boats as well, so that's something else to consider (though perhaps after a new sail is implemented... one thing at a time! )

That's a very good website just for keeping track of what fleet boats got what conversions and the corresponding dates. It will be a decent amount of work to make a campaign layer that reflects these progressive changes, as well as multiple boat models.
