[REL] Historically accurate 4 blades Balao propellers

Hi captains!

Following some very stubborned attempts at importing a 3dmodel inside SH4 and making its texture to work, i've finally made it
I've had to deal with certain restrictions so as for now, it doesn't quite match the level of quality we'll be able to reach in a near future, especially regarding how light reacts on the model... But can't say i'm quite proud :rotfl:Skwasjer will know why lol

Ok, as some of you may already knows, US submarines of that era were using 4 blades propellers during war instead of the 3 blades one the devs modelled. So i've modelled one myself and got it retextured. Propellers have now their own separate texture also instead of sharing a tiny part of the hull general texture (hence very low-res).
I'm releasing the balao as for today since ,first, i gotta have to sleep :rotfl:and second, so you can test it and give feedbacks and comments on how to improve it.

First, some little comparison...

It's 100% latest ROW COMPATIBLE. All you have to do is installing it AFTER ROW (or ROW would overwrite it...)

...CLICK ON THE PROPELLER TO DOWNLOAD...

Hope you'll like it!!

All that hard work and you then use a three-bladed propellor for a download icon! :rotfl:

GREAT WORK!!

GREAT WORK!!
The past week I've seen some funny postings in here. Kriller2 posting beautiful environmental screenshots with his two scopes up, me posting beautiful ROW shots with a mousecursor at the center of the screen, Kriller2 teasing me for doing this, then doing it himself in another thread (:rotfl: ), Ducimus whining S3D is too cool for him to stop modding (yes!! ), and now this...

Anyway, nice job kapitan, next goal: AO map!

wait, wait, wait! i've changed that propeller now...
People seems to have focused more on this lol than on the mod :rotfl:
As for the AO, can't say i'm not looking forward to start working on them
they're easy to get on 3Dsmax, so don't expect lots of problem on this side

Looks intriguing, and waaaayyy over my head from a modding capability perspective. Can't wait to see this released for all the boats. One question though - I noticed that the prop blade pitch on the 4-bladed prop appears to be reversed from the 3-bladed picture, and I remember seeing a lot of discussions in threads a while back about whether the devs had the props turning the wrong way (but I can't remember the outcome or whether it ever got fixed if it was a problem) - was this reversal of the blade pitch on the 4-bladed prop in your picture on purpose and are these new ones now historically correct in terms of their rotation?

His blades have the correct pitch. The wheels in the game are not turning the right way.

Default Thanks

been waiting for these for a longggggggggggggggggg time.

I also ran across this. The starboard prop is is hitting the stern dive plane, a very long prop shaft I think

Nice finding! gonna have to correct this for sure! that's why you make beta release lol
It seems that the right propeller model was not an exact copy of the left one as i thought in the first place... Gonna have to check also if it's turning the other side so as to know if mirroring it is needed (if not painfull to do lol)

Next Test release on the Sargo (for will-rommel )
Techniques will be refined:
  • I'll check first if higher-res for more details is worth it vs optimization (you have to remember this mods makes your PC handle another 512x512 texture, but you gonna have to think ahead of future mods and their impacts on FPS)
  • May test some "false" shaded light on the texture to counter the restrictions in terms of rendition i must face for now (actually, the model is rendered "using" SH3 like engine capabilities instead of SH4)
  • Left and right propellers will still uses the same texture but will have their own different UVW mapping coordinates so corroded and barnacles parts on the blades do not appear on the exact same places on both of them
  • Will correct this shaft problem
Stay tuned

have refined the technique in the early afternoon...
No more beta, i'm about to release the entire mod (i.e all subs) in the next hours or so
  • Will feature higer-res texture
  • each propeller as it own pitch so now, left and right propellers turns the right way (i.e they're "mirrored")
  • Shaft corrected
Thanks for the feedback
in the meantime, stay tuned
