Right, in the game escorts are deaf to the fathometer ping.

Wow,
This is great, I thought that the fathometer in SH4 was able to be heard and I never used it in the presence of the enemy. So I acted accordingly for this game. This is great info, because I'm not really too keen on the map for getting any depth data.

True enough, but I like to play as if they aren't. It's ping early and ping once (long before you enter contact range) for me.
