I can vouch for Jim that it is true, have had that exact experience before. Started with 1 Swordfish attacking, then another single one comes; since Swordfish are easy to shoot down (even with the computer gunner) I decided to chalk up some planes to my tally and let the flak gunner have some fun. More Swordfish kept coming and coming, next in pairs and finally 3 at a time (this guy is a legendary flak shooter, when I finally promoted him to an officer he had 27 kills, only crewman on my boat with a RK because of that feat). With so many Swordfish around the only logical conclusion is that there's a carrier within striking distance.

Since I was on the surface the whole time and looking around I did spot the carrier about 12,000m from my position later on in the firefight. As the flot top ran out of planes I was able to get into a good firing position quickly and slam an eel under the plane elevator. Watching a BB sink is cool, watching a flat top sink is devilishly gratifying; especially when this one capsized before it finally went down.
