In real life u-boats sank several friendly cargo ships. Usually it was the fault of the cargo captain. The had a habit of running outside their assigned areas, and disguising their ships to look like Allied merchants.
I changed my renown settings so I get 0 for sinking neutrals and -1 for sinking friendlies, rather than -1 and -10. That said, I'm always very careful about my spotting. I already waste enough torpedoes just from missing so much.
