Hmmm.
I've gotten the 100 Renown for returning to base . . . . sometimes.

Sometimes SH3 gives it to me, and sometimes it doesn't.
I've tryed to figure out why, but there seems to be no fixed rules.
How close I get to the pier, after crossing the 25 KM line, doesn't seem to matter either.

Good debate developing here.
Anyhow,I will probably bring my UBoat back manually just to retain realism, but this will also depend upon immediate mood and time availability to play the game.I have all weekend free so...we'll crack open the Becks and enjoy the return journey home, fuel permitting of course.I have 1 torpedo left and am sitting south about 50 miles SSE of the Shetlands.I have also been very fuel conscious (always am) being in a IIA I have cruised at no higher than 10kts,unless on an interception run at high speed. We have about 2800 - 3000km of fuel left

Hi Paul, though I do always return to base manually it sometimes does involve some hefty time compression, I just feel it's not right to say, "Right boys, next instant we shall be home!" (Also, that Beck's bier does taste good after I have set course for home and dragged it out from under my bunk.)
Re 10 knots in a IIA - I only ever achieve that during a chase and never ever cruise at that speed. I am usually nursing my boat along at below standard because I know I must also get these guys home when the patrol is "over". I said earlier I often change realism settings but this mainly means regarding assistance in torpedo target/firing. Whatever realism I am using I always use realistic fuel, compressed air, repairs and the rest of it. I consider "cheating" on the torpedo firing is really me using my weapons bloke and the "available technology" to help me out, I think most Kaleuns did that though I could be well wrong.

But actually getting the boat out there, then vigorous attacking... attacking... attacking, like the handbook tells you, and then trying to safely get back home again is all down to me.

And it is very nice to open the schnapps in the nightclub when it is all over!

Were these 'First' patrols? If you use renown to buy anything before you start your first patrol you might not get any renown for sinking things that patrol.

Aside from that, I always return directly to the dock, and in five years I've never, not once, had my renown taken for it.

Nice to meet you Henry

Play it how you want mate,as long as you enjoy your experience, and there is nothing wrong with having assistance, real captains had officers to help them do their job, imagine a captain trying to run a boat on his own.
Personally,I have 92% realism, and most tweaks activated via commander except from the 'realistic career length',I like to get accustomed to my boat and men and dont fancy having to retire my career without my consent.
Experience also comes from how long you have played the game, for me since it came out in 2005 I think it was.You will get better slowly but surely
Schnapps, good beer, hearty food, sexy German women and plenty of rest,oh and a good shower! thats what i'm getting after my current patrol.

Paul.

Done it twice... got to be a bug.
Was it the first patrol of a career? There is a bug in the game where if you modify the sub, before the first patrol renown for sunken ships isn't calculated.

So, if that's the case, you were punished long before the patrol began.

If anyone feels cheated by the loss of renown they can simply calculate what the amount was and put it back in via the DeltaRenown method.

I do come back each time before ending patrol.
I am missing that patrol renown.

I started with 500 renow, I'm at patrol 8 and up to patrol 7
all I have been able to gather from my type II is 500 renown.
I'm at 1000 and it's March 1940... I will never get the type VIIB
which requires 2500 renown

How much should we get each time we bring the boat back
to base ? How can I add the missing renown exactly ?

I think there are two bugs.

First one is the patrol date start. If you want to do modifications to your sub, you must do them just before starting a patrol or the starting date of patrol will not be calculated properly. Always do sub changes before going to a new patrol then.

The second bug I don't recall exactly. I think it is related to the first patrol. You must not do any change to the sub before going on first patrol. You go first patrol, come back. If you do any changes before going to first patrol I think you get 0 renown even if you sink ships.

Don't touch your sub before 2nd patrol. Only do changes before going on a patrol. not after.

I knew about not modifying the game mid patrol and to only do it before a patrol, but I was unaware of problems arising before 1st patrol.I believe before my 1st patrol I installed 2 simple mods to my game,1 was a small moon mod,and the other was a mod that removed the metal rim from around the scopes. So far I have noticed no problem with my current game.
Thanks for the info though,it could prove more relevant with major game changes and not so much with small changes such as in my case.I have also just installed Racerboy's SH4 effects to my game and this was done (while still in the base screen) BEFORE I left port for patrol 2
