Headed out of Wilhelmshaven on Oct 1st in my Type VII/B heading towards my patrol grid E of Scapa. 2 days in whilst on the surface my XO spots a ship, so I dived with the intention of sinking it.
Now this was during the day - excellent visibility and calm seas - so I was confident that this was not a neutral as it was, as from what I could tell the flag was french, and thus a viable target. So been confident of this I launched 2 eels towards her, both hit and she immediatley sunk. Then to my horror I was informed that I had just sunk a neutral! . On closer inspection it turned out to be a Dutch ship!!!
ALWAYS check nationality of ships in early period of the war!!!

This sounds painfully.
