A warning to all

This is a lesson for all when attacking in early 1939.

Headed out of Wilhelmshaven on Oct 1st in my Type VII/B heading towards my patrol grid E of Scapa. 2 days in whilst on the surface my XO spots a ship, so I dived with the intention of sinking it.
Now this was during the day - excellent visibility and calm seas - so I was confident that this was not a neutral as it was, as from what I could tell the flag was french, and thus a viable target. So been confident of this I launched 2 eels towards her, both hit and she immediatley sunk. Then to my horror I was informed that I had just sunk a neutral!:damn:. On closer inspection it turned out to be a Dutch ship!!!

ALWAYS check nationality of ships in early period of the war!!!

yes, it does happen like that too.. when your all but sure.
The worst one for me anyways happens if I have recently used the deck gun and the men manning it are still able to fire at will. You know that they are so hungry for the tonnage that they will fire on any neutral ships, when they are in range and of their own accord. Imagine the suprise when I had identified the ship as a neutral and then hearing the first round fire. I thought I was under attack, with no officer on watch...I pushed him up top and then joined him. I think they were on the third round by then, when I realized that the boat I was going to let pass... was on fire.:o:damn::damn:

Southern lands have stripes running up and down.
Middle lands have stripes running across.
At the top of the world are crosses.

The first country to have a flag was Danmark.

:rotfl2: French and Dutch (the Netherlands) have the same flag colors (I can't blame you :DL), the only difference is that the Dutch flag have horizontal (red, white, blue) stripes.

Anyway, good advise!

Dannebrog was the world's first national flag.
Danmark. Not France.
