If you use SH3 Commander you can randomly vary the crush depth (ie. the max dive depth) with each patrol. So sometimes, you might crush at 150m, at other times deeper - one player on these forums has dived to 400m and lived to tell the tale.

Good Hunting,
Dud

Does SH3 Commander vary crush depth by that much? I use this feature of Commander but would expect to be able to dive into the red i.e. deeper than 160m with a boat that is in tip top condition. If the boat has taken a battering different kettle of fish as you would expect the hull integrity to be reduced. When evading a severe depth charge attack I often go down to 160m or more and as msalama has mentioned, don't start to worry until I pass the 220m mark.

Tried it last night in my VIIC, heading out on a new patrol, fresh, with no damage. Got to 295m before things started to pop. Made it back up ok though.

Man, I love the VIIC.

With malfunctions ticked on SHC when I hit crash dive the telegraph goes to stop every time.

Is this normal in a VIIb in 1939 ?

You are experiencing one of the various engine malfunctions. I expect that if, when surfaced, you selected All Ahead Flank, you would find the telegraph switching to Stop as well.

When leaving port on a patrol I always test my top speed, and my periscopes. If they are not working properly, I abort the patrol.

I didn't know that IX can withstand such a depth. Once I went below 400m, but that was with Type VIIC/42, and that boat can go very deep. With Type IX I never dared going below 270m.
