Deep torp depth this time.. IIRC the 'old' way to prevent duds was to not to touch the default torp depth.. I was wrong. :D

This was the 2nd time around on this scene as the game crashed when I sent a contact report, but the wheel was on target.. as usual.:arrgh!:

Hello, the arb widegui doesn't work.I activated it on top of the tonnage war standalone.
EDIT: Alright,nevermind,it seems to work now. I put arb widegui under the tonnage war standalone and it seems to work. This is weird though because the first time i did that,my game crashed in the loading screen for a new patrol/mission.I'm not sure why it works now.

Also, i never heard about narrow type ix's .Does anyone have any information about them?

Is it normal to not be able to see the ships on the map? I can see the squares and triangles when zoomed out,but when i zoom in the ships aren't visible on the map.Can't see the aircraft too..

It's normal not to see anything on the map... Welcome to SH3.

You can of course change the reality settings when you create a new Captain career.
Try the single missions first where you can set the reality settings before you start each mission.

This doesn't have anything to do with the realism settings,i have the no map contact option disabled.I can see ships on the map when zoomed out,but when i zoom in i can't,they just don't appear.

Could be the map changing from normal map to attack map.
These maps have different settings if I'm not mistaken.

This youtuber aparently can see ships when zoomed in , i think he was using an older version?

You have to back up all the ships.tga in sea folder (I made them transparent).
It was intentional because I’m playing with map contact on to get the ships destroyed icons when killed, but don’t want to get the regular ships icons too easy for me…

Just rename the tga… you could use one single tga renamed each time (you don’t need to see the exact ship length on Nav map - choose a medium one to feat all)

Hi Chicken Man.
Respectfully, you are incorrect. You can most certainly save near a convoy, and reload that save in GWX exactly as you can in NYGM, and ostensibly in other mods.

The problem is this is a stock SH3 bug in ALL mods that users must accept and contend with:

When you save near a convoy or any unit, those units lose their waypoints and become quite 'dumb.' It is not something you instantly notice.... However, if you do nothing and decide to just watch, you can observe the convoy units begin to drift out of formation with each other, sometimes into each other causing collisions as their collision avoidance routine is disabled.

I have yet to find any mod that lives up to the any claim of defeating this bug.


Regardless of what mods you choose to sail with, it would benefit you to do a google search to help make yourself aware of standard practices this community has adopted to mitigate the savegame problems attached to SH3.

:hmmm: I have never observed this… yet.
I often save close to convoy after a first attack (not seeing ships but hearing them at hydrophone), and next save loading I keep going second attack. No problem of any matter. I even can save underwater. Convoy is still there with same route path.

SH3 has numerous save game issues that have nothing to do with GWX. The statement that was made and attributed to being a GWX problem remains inaccurate as such.

It may be that the very edge of hydrophone detection range still allows the proximity to be great enough that the convoy or contact avoids the save game bug, but it again falls on SH3 being the problem, not GWX.

No SH3 save game coding changes were made by the original GWX development team during its construction. Indeed, no .EXE changes of any kind were made even in the final GWX 3.0 release, as those type of changes were not available at the time for GWX or any of its contemporaries such as NYGM.

In any case it has not been my wish to hijack your thread. My only wish has been to set the record straight on a highly inaccurate an uninformed statement that was directly pointed at GWX, and that is now done.

Thank you for the amazing work on the type XXIII, I really enjoy it - I'm even simulating the two stage recharge from 10% to 75% and the weekly full charge as per recommended by the german engineers. I was close to the british coast and I got the chance to attack a convoy ( I survived the attack, :haha:).
I lost both torpedoes because of wrong depth setting, plus the sea was rough - but I wanted to give it a shot.
The enemy find it very difficult to locate you, and even if they do, you can still disappear quite easily.
It is an amazing experience - thank you very much.
I will start a campaign from 1943 and see if I survive until 1945 so I can really deserve a type XXIII:Kaleun_Salute:.

I said that because i have a very bad record of crashes and corrupted saves.I only played sh3 with GWX, and more recently,onealex.GWX is a very good mod but it's just not stable,even taking all precautions my saves still end up getting corrupted,and sometimes my game simply crashes at random while playing.
In FiFi's mod,i already have multiple saves,some in the middle of a convoy,underwater with ships sinking around me.Not one has been corrupted,in gwx this would be impossible.I also didn't suffer any crash while playing.
I was not talking about the problem you just mentioned about units losing their waypoints,i was talking about crashes when loading saves.

I hope i don't sound disrespectful saying all these things,GWX is a great mod and i had a lot of fun with it,but at the same time a lot of anguish at seeing so many patrols wasted because of corrupted saves and crashes.Sinking an entire convoy and then happily going back to base only for your game to crash is not very pleasant. :Kaleun_Salute:

Hi, FIFI.
Do you think it woud be possible to add the following to your mod?

-JFO mod (It would be AWESOME to have it combined with your MOD, and definitely, it would add challenge to your "already extremely challenging:doh: work );
-The prewar turret for the type VIIB for the early months of war;
-Animated Rod antenna ( It would be great to have it extending everytime you send a message, but I really don't know how plausible it is ).

I was thinking about that in these days, and since you already did great things, probably you can impress us...once more:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:.

FiFi,i encountered a small problem where the ship camera (not the f12 free camera) is all messed up.I mean,it just flies around and i can't control it.It happens at random from what i saw,the camera works for most of a patrol and then it goes out of control.

Yes, seems an SH3 bug… sometimes it happens but many times not.
Always when switching viewable targets.

Depending where you hitted the ship, it can sink & explode very fast…or very slow…or no sinking. Some ships are full fuel loaded, and/or ammunition boxes inside hull (mainly the ones heading toward England)

A large merchant, working with 'the wheel' a good solution happens. Decided on two torps and a wait and see approach.

Yes some of the ships can break in half, but not all … even the ones that have this feature doesn’t always brake down … depending where you hit them :03:

In 1940 the tanker Imperial Transport broke in half after being torpedoed but the stern section simply went into reverse and sailed back to port. This would be very funny to put in as an Easter egg to irritate players. After receiving a new bow she was torpedoed again in 1942 and didn't sink then either. Tankers in ballast were very difficult to sink.



HMS Nubian took a torpedo to her bow in 1914 and HMS Zulu lost her stern to a mine. The two parts were united as the "frankenship" HMS Zubian, which served for the rest of WW1.



HMS Porcupine was badly damaged amidships by a torpedo and the two halves were recommissioned separately as HMS Pork and HMS Pine. This is definitely a case where a score of -1 warship should be recorded.

Ouch… lost my VIIC in Gibraltar straight after asking for a La Spezia transfer :timeout:

Was very careful (obviously not enough :haha ) waiting for night to start the crossing. Avoided carefully first destroyers line, and headed close of Tanger when was suddenly spotted by a PT boat… he saw me before my watch crew saw him!
Dived and started escaping but it was too late. Alert was given, and soon I had half of Gibraltar destroyers fleet on me. No waves, not enough depth, after 2hours of depth charging my Walhalla seat was ready :)

Don’t try to cross this straight with no waves! :arrgh!:

I think the Gibraltar straight was mostly patrolled by aircrafts, and some ships like destroyers. Interesting reading here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPB-63

PT boats (or any other fast boat) for anti-submarine patrols seem highly unlikely to me... :doh:

"PT boats were intended to intercept ships of larger classes through firepower and speed. To do this, they were armed with torpedoes, rockets, mortars, and machine guns. Their shallow drafts gave them a distinct advantage over vessels with deep drafts. It enabled them to penetrate minefields and harbor defenses. What is more, they were hard to see on the horizon against the ocean."

Most of the PT-boats served in the Pacific. But indeed, a few were located in the English Channel and in the Med.

I tried and failed to enter the Med in my Type XXI in January 1944. Getting past the DDs wasn't so bad, obviously we sank a few like you do in a XXI, we are the apex predator after all :03:. After we got past the narrowest part of the straits I got a bit cocky and put the snorkel and the OP up and proceeded at 128x speed. We got absolutely NUKED by a plane. U-2153 took heavy damage, sank down to 100m and got crushed, all without TC changing. RWR was not pinged and our TC was not arrested to 1x upon "seeing" the plane. It's possible it was a fighter, but I think it's more likely it was the MAD Catalina. Those things are no joke! I'll definitely be trying again, I know the XXI has it in her, even in 1944.

The passage is VERY difficult.
I made three attempts in total and only two were successful. The first time I was helped by the disgusting bad weather, and I made it through after a long submerged navigation ( I was later sunk during a convoy attack ); the second time I had to sit on the bottom during the day because the sea was flat, and I could only move at night. It was very difficult and I had to keep close to the African coast, so I could bottom fast and disappear from the destroyers anytime was necessary.
The third time...well...I tried to stay close the European coasts... I was not able to shake them down ( and I realized that most of the destroyers are patrolling there - on the other hand they just hit and run the african coasts, so you mostly deal with PTboats ) and after a few hours they started to unleash the hell on me...and I was sunk, of course.
My suggestion, If you want to cross the strait, is not to exceed x64 and pay close attention to EVERYTHING!
I think it is one of the best experience of the whole game, and the satisfaction of achieving it, it is priceless.
Remember that once you are past Ceuta, there are nice destroyers patrolling the waters nearby, so, when you think you made it, you actually did not.

29 Flotilla second attempt from Brest finally successfully done to La Spezia :yeah:
Took me almost full afternoon thought … without exiting game once.
But I enjoyed it very much.

Firstly I waited for waves and good visibility. Unfortunately weather changed for calm sea at the worst part of the strait (6m/s) and medium visi.
Opted for sailing very close to African coast along Tanger & Ceuta, and ALWAYS deck’s awash (7m) when surfaced.
Was detected on surface once (again by PT boat) but managed to escape with incredible luck. I even saw a plane in the clear night, but didn’t saw me. Tons of patrols in the strait!
The only damage I took was on the other side in Med, quite far from Gibraltar when a fighter bombed me.

Do you think it would be possible to ALWAYS start a Mediterranean campaign from a french port, and then move to La spezia? Even in 42'-43'? That way, entering the Mediterranean would be a necessary step every time. It's very nice to start a campaign from La spezia, but being compulsory to cross the Gibraltar strait would be awesome!!!

Yes x64 is intentional … x128 is too much when close to harbors :03:

On side note, I’m working on a new version of my NYGM.
New environment, new waves, completely new air threat, plenty adjustments … stay tuned, but new air threat should be quite long (with new campaign Land file)

Have repaired the night vision (for the new environment), have fixed the equipment destroyed at start (sometimes happening), have created a global lighthouses blackout from April 41 (as in RL), and Brest bunker start only from October 41 (as in RL)… for the changes coming to my mind. But lots of others ones too!

As any SH3, playing more than X256 you will not see any planes!

Forgot to say that sometimes, a whole plane squadron (6 planes or more) can bomb you if you are spotted … can be a good idea to NOT engage a single plane :yep:
Also sometimes at certain dates, you can encounter German planes in Biscaye gulf… not only British ones.

Hi John, I’m quite surprised as I usually experience the other way… meaning escorts can spot me further than i think it should :hmmm:
I even tried to adjust the Sim.Cfg without significant success; but here in your case, there is a problem I never had.

Have started three new careers, Bergen, Aug '44, Lorient and St. Nazaire both in January '43. In each case Allied aircraft have killed me even before I can reach the escort separation point.

With ~12 metres under the keel, I suppose carefully diving to periscope depth immediately after leaving the dock might work but that does not seem to be a reasonable fix. At Lorient, the weather even prevented manning the flak guns, which is incredibly frustrating.

Similar attacks happened in GWX3 from time to time when departing on late-war patrols but not every-single-time!

Any suggestions?

Congratulations - your latest version Is AWESOME! The new environment is great - it looks so real.
I was staring at how the lights reflected against a tanker that I almost missed it.
Anyway, after the enchantment, I sunk the Tanker, and the burning ship reflections on the water surface made it look like the oil was spreading around - very well done, Fifi. For real!

What bother me more than the number of u-boat sunk by planes, is the torpedo fix not accurate at all… in 1942, 6 T2 fired all duds and/or premature at zero wind… this didn’t existed. I think I will deactivate it, because even adjusting the .ini, nothing better to see… and I’m not able to fix the.act.

Good morning!

Trying to install this mod on my steam deck and I think I’m very close to getting it working!

What’s currently stopping me is the dreaded “Cannot render 3D” message starting the game. So I cannot get into settings and disable full screen, as I’ve seen suggested before.

The game runs fine vanilla. It’s only when I try to apply FiFi’s NYGM. Although it’s the first and only mod I’ve tried.

Does anyone have any tips?

I have tried to change screen resolution, and I need to try the refresh rate, but I may not have tried that one. Lots of options between resolution and forcing different protons so I may not have found the correct combination yet… just trying to see if anyone had already figured it out.

Thanks adjusting my resolution got me past that error message and it launched!

But now the screen is too big and most of it is cut off. I can only see about 25% of the screen, just the top left corner.

I’ve done some tinkering today and this is what I’ve found so far:

1. It doesn’t matter what screen resolution I put the deck in.
2. I have changed full screen to “no” in the main.cfg file, but it doesn’t fix it.
3. When I attempt to force compatibility with a certain proton, a d3d9.ini file appears and has seemed to be giving people problems with the widescreen mods. I have to uninstall everything and start over to get around the “unable 3d…” CTD.
4. Installing the ARB wide mode didn’t fix it.

I’ve seen this mod in the downloads that someone recommended for the steam deck: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1092

Would I be able to try the resolution fix after installing NYGM?

I think that I altered the TGA that is inside the Sea folder, look for the TGA file boat name _shp. You would have to edit one by one, nobody is going to give you a solution here, it's their tastes, if not GWX ONEALEX is very good, I recommend it to you.

For next update (probably tomorrow) I have slightly reduced planes threat, tried career January 43 from Lorient/Brest/St Nazaire without major problem to leave harbor. First planes encountered in high seas :yep:
Added the heavy cruiser Cumberland above, plus a new plane … the nice Gloster Gladiator. There will be no need to restart careers, if installed while in bunker :yep:

Curious to why there's always a juicy big ship right in the front of a convoy. Seen a few of these but this time I was in the right position. It's like a 'honeypot'.:D

On the getaway from this attack I noticed a big juicy warship halfway down the line. It had my my name on it... Now I'm going around to give it a sweet kiss or two.. :arrgh!:

About radar warnings, now when clear weather (yellow cloud) the Metox does not warn you before crew sight.
With later war others radar warning upgrades, it could warn you before watch crew.
When some mist (pink cloud), Metox should warn you just before planes appearing (at 90%)
When heavy mist (grey & orange cloud), Metox and others radar warning will warn you of course.
This applies for playing X256 max!… otherwise no planes encounter.

About Fumo 29 radar, it’s useful when heavy mist AND at night! (When vision is restricted). Same for Fumo 30…

Lately, I encountered a stability problem with my NYGM, that couldn’t come from my mod.
Random crash appearing at loading game (just before initializing) or leaving Kiel harbor or even when clicking left hand icon on GUI…
In my Windows event observatory, it came from a Ntdll.dll issue.
So I deinstalled all my latest windows updates up the KB5044273, and problem is gone!
Usually I don’t update my windows (when it’s working correctly no need to screw up things), but seems one day he did it in my back :haha:

Yes, I confirm that I have had my share of problems......under windows 11 pro d ailleurs cette machine en Ultra wide Oled Rtx ..bla bla...:timeout:I do not recommend it for old games ... otherwise you will have to go through settings or other things that will necessarily affect the screen resolution... which has the effect of destabilizing the game... moreover this game is sensitive to this since it is already modified to 1920x1080
several times CTD before starting the campaign...
Really more stable w10 pro on my old "Bécanne"...:yep::arrgh!: as I don't do updates... except what I need....
I'm setting up another new config this weekend...

There are some adaptations to be made, like some harbors to move and/or change, and some convoys/units path to adjust.
But I think it will add very nice accurate touch to my mod :03:

a small but annoying new problem has recently manifested for me while playing this mod: sometimes my mouse cursor will show, as in my windows mouse cursor. It'll layer on top of the in-game cursor, and worst of all it'll be stuck in the middle of the screen whenever I switch to mouse look. I'm sure it's something that can be caused by "shelling out" but of course I would never do that! I'm not sure what's causing it for me. Has anyone else run into it?

My problems with the mod came from my interiors... I removed it everything works again without problem...

Had an interesting scenario just off Bergen on my way to AN13,

Two hours before, sunk a french freighter. then this 'dutch' ship appeared. Got into position and a firing solution... then ID'd it as Dutch.. so let it go (I'd already started a war with the french two hours ago :D ).

On my way, submerged to have a 'look' around and found the same Dutch ship, going around in circles... surfaced to investigate. On approaching the crew got tense... Discression is the better.. submerged, and found two warships approaching at high speed over the horizon. Surfaced and went to Warp Speed outa there.

Was it a trap ?

I had Version 6.6 running fine on my new laptop but whenever I start a career in Bergen using Version 6.7 I get a crash to desktop every time I try to leave the control room screen. This happens using hot-keys or icons and only when based at Bergen, the French bases do not appear to be affected.

I'm willing to accept that this may be a user problem, when I upgraded to 6.7 I did not use a pristine SH3 installation and instead removed 6.6 completely using JSGME and file delete and then applied 6.7 over the existing game. Other than Bergen, all seems well so any input is welcome.

Just tested to launch new career in Bergen 11th flotilla @ 1942/06/01, and no issue at all...i'm sorry all is ok here :yep:

Well, I removed all traces of SH3 and started from scratch, including downloading V6.7 again. Having completed re-installing everything including the new Steel Coffins download, everything appears to be working as intended.

No clue as to what happened to the previous installation but it seems fixed now.

What loading screen ?
The only place where you can see the number of version, is in first window after the game is loaded (text scrolling - loaded via Commander etc) and it says V6.8…

IN LAST V6.8 YOU MUST DELETE THE FOREST FOLDER INSIDE YOUR THE DATA/TERRAIN PROVIDED BY MY MOD!

Otherwise you will get CTD when approaching Bahamas ect…

:yep::har:Exactly!!! there is no such effect...Personally I do not use this kind of trickery...I do not use any filter... no reshade or ENB...my screens are 100% in games... I use the F12 of the game "it is very bad by the way" ...I find this more representative and original in game..in order to appreciate the original work of the modders...

I'm leaning towards the latest Reshade... with already a good chromatic aberration.and other effects...
But I'm a little in doubt... it looks like the image is retouched, look at this screen the wet effect only affects the areas exposed to light..

Actually have given all bombs a texture (realized they didn’t! :o )
Added bombs of 1000kg & 2000kg to NYGM :D
Have given air depth charges a new accurate 3D shape
Also added a bunch of different air depth charges exploding at different depth… so plane throwing depth charges could be lot more dangerous.
Available for next update of course…

You can get a good result with these settings for the deck texture :

- a proper specular color
- a low specular strenght (10 or 20) in order the reflecting (specular) color is visible under a wide angle
- (glossiness : it works only under certain conditions I've forgotten)

But you won't be able to see the conning tower reflecting on the deck... so the final effect will more look like a shining metal rather than wet. But that will still be better than a "flat" texture (like cardboard) IMO.

I managed to addapt the GWX OneAlex GUI to NYGM FiFi 6.9, conserving the bathymetry map and all the functions in the ARB GUI included in NYGM 6.9. :Kaleun_Wink:

Playing 7 hours with 6.9 and the GUI, all works fine. I like it...:Kaleun_Cheers:

I even had to reinstall all, cause even stock 6.9 version crashed …
Now that I have recovered a stable game, I have to re do the Kanal schleuse :yep:

No luck… there will not be schleuse even for Kiel Kanal … seems we have reached max memory (at least on my PC) because game crashes each time I activate the schleuse.
So no new St Nazaire harbor too.
But… new Kiel harbor could be ok… maybe … have to test it… it doesn’t have doors locks.

Excellent news .... while experimenting, I managed to port an entire Interior sub model, with crewmembers and all, to external mode!

For context, SH3 and SH4 usually treat the sub interior as "another world". Not rendered in the actual free mode.

With a little work you can change this! Using camera settings, you can tell the game not to show the interior compartments in free mode. It's the same technique of adding controllers that I am using to generate cargo screens for WWI prize warfare.

The next step was to move the interior compartments vertically to a distance where you can't see ocean water. Also, rain/weather does not fall thru the compartments.

Then, you assign the free compartments floating over the sub camera settings similar to conning tower mode.

That way, you get a new interior mode for the sub - rendered in real time in the same world - that you cannot see in free camera. Better still, your PC does not waste power rendering the interior when you are in free mode. Or rendering high poly ships in the new realtime interior mode.

A lot needs to be done, and the main issue so far is there are no night lights - but I suspect this can be fixed. Note that the game has star shells, lights for buildings onshore, etc that I could mod into lightbulbs for the new interior.

In theory, this opens the door to lots of things - including using new crew models. I don't think I will convert Wolves of the Kaiser to use this technique due to the amount of time needed to convert and test everything - but this could be a big breakthrough for future mods - WWI, WWII or whatever you want.

Dug out some OLD DVD's and no ref Harbor program. Sadly.
I can tell you from memory it was very unstable at the time.
It also did not account for Terrain. So you really had no reference for things placed on a hill or slope. Can it be done? Yes and I'm thinking on a round about way to do such in a 3D program.
Would be much easier in SH4 or SH5 but I'll keep thinking on this.

Number 1 would be to extract the SH3 or SH4 Terrain files then convert the needed area to say an OBJ file for a given area. I've already got tools to do that with SH5! So may not need the SH3/4 files.

Number 2 would be to decode the Placement settings from the SH3 files and import that information in some way.
2A would be to use the NAMED object as what to import.
2B would be to change the placement of said object as stated in the given dat.

Since it's free? Blender seems a good choice and I do have Blender on my system.
I did start Coding an Exporter to Export the whole World map at some time back but never finished it.
It used a Custom Run Length encoded and I believe a ZHF incoded format.
I've probably forgot more then most people ever knew about the files!

Don't hold your breath as I'm not saying I'll actually do it!

- Gave new textures to bombs/rockets/air depth charges & new 3D model to air depth charge ;

FWIW, I was able to install my Type II Interior mod without issue. :D Now the Type VII Interior is all together another matter. :nope: Without the Type VII Interior the file size for Silent Hunter III/data is 6.13 gig all modded up. With it installed the size increases to 6.17 gig. Not significant enough to warrant a CTD in my opinion. :hmmm: At least not on my machine. I think there is some other underlying issue causing problems. I have tried the recent Interior mod said to work in NYGM but I still get a CTD with it installed.



Regardless, thanks for all your hard efforts in keeping this old beast current.:yeah:

i knew that it was Fifi's modifications that made it not work anymore..
you just have to compare the files and see possibly s3d editor. For the modifications..
i don't have time to tinker...i would like to be able to have a full career I think that Fifi's work can do without it for the moment..

But you just have to understand I have to make this game solid rock ON MY MACHINE! Otherwise, it’s nonsense for me…

The full interiors (whatever U-Boat type) are crazy in terms of weight.
Compare the files weight of full interior vs my latest files… (in data/Interior for each sub)
And anyway, it’s CTD ahead for me with all the new harbors + full interior … so no questioning for me :03:

When I said: make him angry.. it's simply a joke..:haha::har::har::arrgh!:
however I know that Fifi doesn't like this theme because there's too much hassle with it... I myself have annoyed him several times... Personally he's completely right the added "Mo" weight sometimes causes problems on certain machines. As I said we can do without it... the subtleties of his NYGM Mod are much better elsewhere... if later we have a solution that works without a problem then maybe...:yep::O:

I ask because usually I don't survive to tell the tale. I play in late war and many times I get sunk very fast, with no way of intervene in the matter. I was only able to stop the flooding once, but I was so intent to pump the water out that I didn't realize whether the timer decreased. I ordered to blow ballast as the real Kaleuns were preventively doing in case of massive flooding, but on my way up I didn't check the flooding time.

PS I realized that the "start patrol at sea" in Bergen, has the same starting point as the normal start, so you are in port, basically.

Yes, flooding tied to amount of compartment damage…move your crew with repair ability to the damaged compartment !

Will change the start at sea point for Bergen, never realized this because I never use the start at sea!

Playing late war, you must avoid any DD or planes contacts at all costs … you are not hunting anymore, you are chased everywhere on the seas (as it was in real) :yep: :arrgh!:
