I think I'll pack this in now while things are quiet, plus there's a need to avoid players who are active when I am getting more whacks than those who are not

This has always been an issue and maybe the only way to address it is by curtailing the contest so that "daytime" players get fewer hours (and whacks) than those snoozing on the other side of the globe. In Whack-A-Squirrel I've tried posting higher value whacks during the "night" hours to offset the lower number of posts - but there's no way of knowing whether this works

Feel free to whack the last one (there's a clue in the picture) and I'll be back with the results later :salute:

I was once asked to paint Nigel Mansell's F1 car and the gallery who commissioned it from me were very cagey about who it was for, so I was left wondering. I'll see whether I have a photo

That's an interesting story and a half. :D

Nigel was not able to defend his only championship and why that happened is still a little murky.
By the halfway point of the 1992 season it was very evident that the Williams FW19b was not only one of the best looking cars to ever race in F1, it was also mostly unbeatable due to its Renault power plant, the semi-active gear box, and its active suspension. At least one of its innovations would get banned at some point.
Meanwhile, Nige's old team mate at Ferrari, Alan Prost, wanted to un-retire and win another championship. Alan was also good buddies with President Mitterrand and Renault was a nationalized French company, meaning that what the Prez wanted would more than likely happen (Williams had an exclusive contract with Renault for its V-10 engine).
There were also rumors that Nigel expected a significant bump ($$$) in his next driving contract and Frank Williams was balking at the numbers for 1993.
Either way, by 1991 Mansell and Prost got along like two ally cats with their tails tied together and Nigel was in no mood to be sharing another team with Prost and his palace intrigue/game of thrones hoo hah behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, and here's where it gets murky, Bernie Ecclestone was rumored to be getting livid at the whole mess. Formula One could be a lot of things, but to the fans it had to at least look like a sport. Which meant that the driver who won the championship would get another year to drive AND get the car with a proud 1 painted on the nose.

Enter Carl Haas, Paul Newman, and Mario Andretti. Newman and Haas were sure they could score a coup if they could bring the current world driving champ over to Champcar/CART in the US. Nigel had already moved the wife and kids to an estate on the west coast of Florida so he could play golf and avoid the journo's in Europe. All Newman and Haas really had to do was present Nige with a favorable ($$$$) contract which wasn't that big of a stretch, at the time Newman/Haas' driver team was Mario and his son, Michael, who was making the move to F1 in 1993 to partner up with Senna at McLaren (insert picture of a deer staring into the headlights of a speeding semi), but that's a WHOLE 'nother story. :03:

In the end, Bernie didn't get a happy ending but he got something that, at least, wasn't a total disaster. Nige retired from F1 at the end of his championship season and scooted over to Champcar where he pulled the ultimate one-off record by becoming the only driver to hold the F1 world championship and the Champcar championship AT THE SAME TIME.
I gave Nige a lot of credit for that move. Winning the Champcar championship wasn't a stroll in the park and one of his wins came at the 500 mile (250 lap) race at Michigan Speedway where the cars were topping out at 245 MPH/400 KPH. :o He also started a bit of a revolution where talented drivers in F1 had, at least, an opportunity to get into some top shelf teams in Champcar.

If Bernie thought 1992 was bad, it didn't hold a candle to 1994. But again, that's another story. :yep:
