Granted, the high stakes of squirrel whacking and the pressure of competition make this almost inevitable, but for goodness sake, people. :nope:

At this point, I think the only fair way to continue is for ALL the players to send a 2 liter sample of their, umm, fluids to Eichhörnchen via Priority Mail for proper testing (or whatever). Its the only fair thing to do. :yep:

Meanwhile, Catfish's masterful whack sending that bomb out of the ground for a massive 30 points will be talked about for a long time, I'm sure. But maybe not, huh?

A new rule has been added to deal with an issue that came to a head big-time this time: simultaneous whacking. I've decided that where competitors get in a tangle with their truncheons we should prioritise the one whose name appears first on the page

If you shoudl ever come acxross a bay squirrel that dropped out if its nest and has not yet been reunited with its mother: if it is uninjured, and not too cold already (in which case the mommy would reject it even if she finds it), you may find that it even behaves fearless when you apporoach and doe snot attenmpt to flee, or even approaches oyu and tries to climb up in your lef. these behaviopurs are no aggressiveness, but pure desperation, its an instinct that clicks in when their situation is potentialle life-threatening.

If weather is fine (not wet, not cold), and you have reasonable reason to assume the mother could still be around, or the nest is close (search for other babies then who have dropped out!), simply: if you think time is still nto out and you can try something, then try to reunite the byb with its Mom. For that, you must attract the mother.

In past two weeks I got severla rpeorts here form germany where finders and squirrel rescuers were very successful with using audio records of typical high-pitched calls of babies for help. The played them from their smartphone, volume pumped up, put the baby on it or nearby on the gorund, and waioted. Often the mothger appared, and quie fast and almost furious, these calls seem to have an almost electrifying effect of the mother animals. I give the link to two such calles below, both are from American grey squirrels, but European red squirrels fully react tot hese calls, too. One rehabber said he had half a dozen squirrels showing up and being excited and staring at the baby from the trees although obviously not all of them could have family relations to it. And red ones usually are lone wolves, different to American grey ones, which are very social.

Save the MP3 sound file from these videos and have them ready on tablet or mobile, if you are willing to not just look the other direciton when a helpless baby squirrel impacts in your life. Reuniting the baby with its mother should be the first thing tried if time and situation (weather, stamina, health) allows. I know that sometimes reunion even worked after the baby was takne in for the night, and another attempt was tried the next day.

A European red or American grey squirrel brings joy into your life, belie me. Don'T turn away. The European red ones have since several years a very tough time, they are not doing well. Babies get born up to two months too early (later stravation or freezing to death almost certain), adult animals get found exhausted in summer since they do not find food anymore after three drought years in sequence. When somebody in Europe tells you the red squirrel population is fine in general, you can take it that he most likely does not know it too well. I know several rescue stations across Germany, and they already went into red alert and are full already since late January. Its a desaster.

1) The little mishap was when I said something rather stupid in the boys lockerroom after gym (In the boys locker room for my class, A LOT of dirty things and innuendos are said, basically everyone acts like they are gay. This time I said something stupid that a new kid overheard and told the teacher, and so I had lunch detention and two weeks of grounding at home.

Scenes from two squirrel rehabber's living room that I happen to know, they live three bicycle hours south of me :) . They turn their living room every season into a squirrel rehab centre. They currently have 9 squirrels that they got as orphants and younglings, and currently prepare them for shuttling to a bigger forest aviery where they will spend another 2-4 weeks to get used to the temperatures, sounds and smells of the wild, and to unfriend from their human foster parents. Mind you, these are EUROPEAN red squirrels, they are quite differnt in robustness and social behaviouir than American red squirrels and other squirrel species there are in North America.

Ours squirrels do not do these things. Yours usually are more aggressive, robust, and sicne they form cosil communities anbd ties, more courageous and probbaly a bit more intelligent (social behaviour needs social intelleigence). European red squirrels are social only in their childhood, then most of them become isolationists.

These are is red squirrels as well - but not our sciurus vulgaris, but the American red squirrel (tamiasciurus hudsonicus).

Me too, but do not be mistaken, rehabbing young squirrels is a full time job and very time and power-consuming especially in the first weeks: they need to get fed, massaged and animated for excretion every two hours - DAY AND NIGHT. Your whole life runs in 100 minute intervalls - including sleeping, leaving the house...

I would do it, but my flat is not such to allow this. However, I have a full set of equipment and stuff and do have the knowledge, just in case of an emergency. Forn the first 4-5 weeks max I could rehab a bayb squirrel. In the garden, I just run a feeding station with food, nuts, water and polstering material. I have five regular guests since last summer, I brought them all over the winter, at least helped on their nutrition situation, and so all survived, all are well-fed and strong, although all were in their first year (80% of European red squirrels do not survive their first year).

Two things everybody can do with his garden, easily: make your rainwater ton squirrel-safe, put a net on it or put a ladder-kind of stick into it, so that an animal falling into it must not miserably drown, but can escape, or does not fall into it in the first. Do not use poisonous stuff in your garden (especially snail and slug bait, it snot just the target spoecies eating it). Second, have water bowls especially in freezing winter and in hot summer out there, for squirrels in elevated positions where they mst not go to the ground (cats), for other animals on the ground (hedghogs). I do not want to feed doves and other bigger birds and animals, but never under no circumstance do I chase an animals away fromt he water, even mice or rats can drink, thoguh not more than just drink. And then I make it clear that they are not welcomed beyond that, eat and stay and sh!t everywhere.

And you know what? They doves and that mouse seem to get it. I have a balcony in the roof (2nd floor), and there a bird feeder and water bowl additional to the squirrel buffett in the garden below. Beside little birds and especially many tomtits and sparrows there are a small mouse and two doves who do not even try to target the feeders anymore, but go straight for the water only, and immediately leave again. They tried to eat earlier, and learned that this means trouble with me (noise, things thrown at the window or through the door and such). Clever little things. Nobody must die of thirst here, its a nasty death, and it comes much easier and faster than starvation.
